A 4 kV/120 A SiC Solid-State DC Circuit Breaker Powered By a Load-Independent IPT System

This article introduces a 4 kV/120 A solid-state dc circuit breaker (DCCB) based on discrete SiC mosfets. The DCCB is designed in a five-layer tower structure. Each layer consists of a circular main conduction branch and an attached gate driver. There are two primary benefits of the proposed DCCB. First, it reduces conduction loss with multiple devices in parallel. Second, it achieves an ultrafast response speed with SiC mosfets. Moreover, the gate drivers of the DCCB are powered by a domino inductive power transfer (IPT) system. It achieves the load-independent constant-voltage output characteristics, which means the outputs are immune to load variations. Additionally, an IPT system prototype is implemented to test the power transfer performance. At 500-kHz frequency, the total output power reaches 15.73 W, which is sufficient to power on five gate drivers, with a peak transfer efficiency of 75.4%. The IPT system is tested to power a 4 kV/120 A DCCB prototype. It validates that the DCCB is effective to turn off 120 A current within 3.5 μs.

A Single Passive Gate-Driver for Series Connected Power Devices in DC Circuit Breaker Applications

This letter proposes a novel single passive gate driver solution based on passive devices to control series-connected power semiconductor devices for dc circuit breaker (DCCB) applications. The transient suppression devices (e.g., metal oxide varistors) are utilized to achieve natural voltage balancing among the series devices, while providing the discharge path of the gate capacitor of the upper devices. Here, the proposed method is very simple, cost effective and more compact compared with conventional voltage balancing method-based DCCBs. Besides, gate voltage oscillation during the voltage recovery process is mitigated by the addition of an extra gate capacitor. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of proposed method.

Improved multiline HVDC circuit breakers with asymmetric conducting branches

Here, this paper proposes two improved multiline HVDC circuit breakers (DCBs) for HVDC grid applications, including type-1 improved multiline DCB and type-2 improved multiline DCB. The two improved DCBs draw on the core idea of extended H-bridge. m adjacent DC transmission lines share a single main breaker (MB) and surge arrester. Due to the extended H-bridge design, bidirectional current flow can be achieved by a unidirectional MB. An upper conducting branch and a lower conducting branch are connected to a DC line. The upper and lower conducting branches in the two improved multiline DCBs are asymmetric. The upper conducting branch of both two improved DCBs is formed by a load commutation switch (LCS) and an ultra-fast disconnector (UFD). The lower conducting branch of the type-1 improved scheme is composed of a diode and a UFD; and of the type-2 improved scheme is made up of diode stack. Compared with other DCBs, the proposed type-1 DCB and type-2 DCB are more cost effective. Among the five DCBs, the type-2 improved scheme requires the least number of individual switching actions. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed schemes are verified through simulation of a bipolar three-terminal HVDC grid in PSCAD/EMTDC.

Wide bandgap optical switch circuit breaker

A high-voltage switch is adapted for use as a medium-voltage direct current circuit breaker, which provides a low-cost, small-footprint device to mitigate system faults. In one example, a method for operating a wideband optical device includes illuminating the wide bandgap optical device with a light within a first range of wavelengths and a first average intensity, allowing a current to propagate therethrough without substantial absorption of the current, illuminating the wide bandgap optical device with light within the first range of wavelengths and a second average intensity that is lower than the first average intensity to allow a sustained current flow though the wide bandgap optical device, and illuminating the wide bandgap optical device with light within a second range of wavelengths to stop or substantially restrict propagation of the current through the wide gap material.

Fast, Controllable, and Modular Solid-State Circuit Breaker Design for Battery Management Systems

Electric power grid is experiencing a growing number of distributed and inertia-free generation resources. To facilitate the growing generation and load demands, and ensure stable operation, energy storage systems, especially behind-themeter-storage (BTMS), have emerged as a potential candidate. BTMS plays a vital role in the grid storage sector and supports high power charging for EVs. However, the potential of thermal runaway and associated safety concerns in the batteries can hamper their widespread adoption. In this work, we provide a solution for a fast and controllable discharge of a cell that was identified as a stressful/faulty, in the battery pack, and fast circuit breaking leveraging the Solid-State Circuit Breaker (SSCB) technology which provides active control over the cell connection as opposed to conventional passive solutions. Testing on the simulation platform successfully validated the concept, demonstrating its efficacy. Controlled discharge testing with 20Ah LiFePO4 Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells from 1C-10C current rate on the hardware prototype corroborated simulation results, demonstrating design feasibility and providing essential data for its performance and thermal characteristics, while also revealing limitations that inform areas for further optimization.

Securing against malicious control of circuit breakers in electrical substations

An example method for detecting and mitigating attacks on electric power substations comprises detecting a command to open or close a circuit breaker in the electric power substation. A modified extended substation model for the electric power substation is generated, based on the detected command and based on measurements in substation, where the modified extended substation model is a power flow model for the substation and for one or more directly connected neighboring substations. A power flow analysis is performed, using the modified extended substation model, to generate a predicted voltage for each of a plurality of nodes in the substation and in the one or more directly connected neighboring substations. Each predicted voltage is compared to a corresponding allowable voltage range, and execution of the command is blocked in response to determining that one or more of the voltages is outside the corresponding allowable voltage range.

Circuit breaker cases

A flammable plastic part was duplicated dimensionally using a nonflammable material in place of the flammable plastic. The material used was L-3203-6 with a 16-hour post-cure at 400 F. Initial efforts were made to determine shrinkage tolerances required to produce a mold which would produce a finished, workable part. The final twenty-five circuit breaker cases were shipped and the metal inserts when installed, produced a workable breaker. Initial submissions of cases were rejected as lacking sufficient rigidity though they met all other requirements. The plastic cases weighed 16.5 grams, whereas the Refset cases weighed 17 grams, not meeting the less-weight requirement. The data on shrinkage determinations, and mold and part dimensions are shown. The method of manufacture is also reported.

Development and testing of a 180-volt dc electronic circuit breaker with a 335-ampere carry and 1200-ampere interrupt rating

NASA Lewis Research Center and associated contractors have conducted a program to assess the potential requirements for a high-current switch to conceptually design a switch using the best existing technology, and to build and demonstrate a breadboard which meets the requirements. The result is the high current remote bus isolator (HRBI). The HRBI is rated at 180 V dc, 335 A continuous with a 1200 A interrupt rating. It also incorporates remote-control and protective features called for by the Space Station Freedom PMAD dc test bed design. Two breadboard 335 A circuit breakers were built and tested that demonstrate a promising concept of paralleled current-limiting modules. The units incorporated all control and protective features required by advanced aerospace power systems. Component stresses in each unit were determined by design, and are consistent with a life of many thousands of fault operations.

Autonomous Microgrid Restoration Using Grid-Forming Inverters and Smart Circuit Breakers: Preprint

The proliferation of distributed inverter-based resources (IBRs) raises the questions if these IBRs can be used to blackstart microgrids and distribution feeders after major outages. In this paper, we propose and evaluate an autonomous microgrid restoration concept using grid-forming (GFM) IBRs and smart circuit creakers (SCBs). The concept is first explored in simulation platform and then a hardware testbed containing actual GFM inverters is developed to demonstrate these functionalities. A combination of dispatchable virtual oscillator control (dVOC) and droop-based control schemes have been designed for GFM inverter controls in the software simulations and hardware testbed. Subsequently, operation of SCBs using two distinct principles have been demonstrated that can restore or connect portions of the network.
