Methodology to Compare Twitter Reaction Trends between Disinformation Communities, to COVID related Campaign Events at Different Geospatial Granularities

With still ongoing COVID pandemic, there is an immediate need for a deeper understanding of how Twitter discussions (or chatters) in disinformation spreading communities get triggered. More specifically, the value is in monitoring how such trigger events in Twitter discussion do align with the timelines of relevant influencing events in the society (indicated in this work as campaign events). For campaign events in regards to COVID pandemic, we consider both NPI (Nonpharmaceutical Interventions) campaigns and disinformation spreading campaigns together. In this short paper we have presented a novel methodology to quantify, compare and relate two Twitter disinformation communities, in terms of their reaction patterns to the timelines of major campaign events. We have also analyzed these campaigns at their three geospatial granularity contexts: local county, state, and country/ federal. We have conducted a novel dataset collection on campaigns (NPI + Disinformation) at these different geospatial granularities. Then, with collected dataset on Twitter disinformation communities, we have performed a case study to validate our proposed methodology.

DOE Packaging Certification Program Engineering Class Demonstration Tests

On Thursday August 11, 2022, a series of explosive demonstration tests were conducted at the Sandia National Laboratories 9920 Test Complex for the 2022 DOE Packaging Certification Program Explosives Engineering class. Class participants included both SNL engineering student interns as well as SNL and LANL staff members. The test series was designed by the class instructor, W. Gary Rivera Org. 6626, and 9920 site test engineer, Marissa Martinez Org. 6648, with help from Michelle Chatter Org 6514 and Luke Gilbert Org 6815.

Physics-informed KNN milling stability model with process damping effects

This paper describes a k-nearest neighbors, or KNN, model for milling stability including process damping effects. A physics-based, frequency domain milling stability solution is used to generate the training data, but does not incorporate process damping effects. The data set is then updated using limited tests to capture the process damping behavior. A “stair step” approach is used to select the test points, where a first spindle speed-axial depth combination is selected based on the physics-based stability map, subsequent tests are defined using the previous test result, and data points are updated by knowledge of process damping behavior and the test results. Furthermore, the KNN modeling approach demonstrates the ability to predict both stable and unstable results, including process damping behavior.

Evaluation of automated stability testing in machining through closed-loop control and Bayesian machine learning

Here, this paper describes a system for automated identification of the optimal stable cutting parameters in milling through Bayesian machine learning and closed-loop control. The closed-loop control system consists of a process monitoring architecture, an analysis framework, and a feedback mechanism. The analysis framework consists of a Bayesian machine learning algorithm that learns a stability map given test results. The learned stability map is used to select parameters for stability testing using an expected improvement in the material removal rate criterion. The test parameters are communicated to the machine controller to complete the test cut through a feedback mechanism. The test cuts were monitored using an audio signal; the stability of the test cut was determined by analyzing the frequency content of the audio signal. The test result was fed back to the Bayesian learning algorithm to complete the loop. Experimental results demonstrate that the system can identify the optimal stable parameters without information about the cutting force model or the structural dynamics. The system provides a low-cost method for optimal stable parameter identification in an industrial environment.

Parallel Solver Framework for Mixed-Integer PDE-Constrained Optimization

ROL-PEBBL is a C++, MPI-based parallel code for mixed-integer PDE-constrained optimization (MIPDECO). In these problems we wish to optimize (control, design, etc.) physical systems, which must obey the laws of physics, when some of the decision variables must take integer values. ROL-PEBBL combines a code to efficiently search over integer choices (PEBBL = Parallel Enumeration Branch-and-Bound Library) and a code for efficient nonlinear optimization, including PDE-constrained optimization (ROL = Rapid Optimization Library). In this report, we summarize the design of ROL-PEBBL and initial applications/results. For an artificial source-inversion problem, finding sources of pollution on a grid from sparse samples, ROL-PEBBLs solution for the nest grid gave the best optimization guarantee for any general solver that gives both a solution and a quality guarantee.
