Differential electron scattering cross sections for the first optically forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II

Differential electron scattering cross sections have been measured for dipole-forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II in the angular range theta = 4-17 deg at 50 eV. These provide the first recorded angular distributions for an optically forbidden transition. It is found that while the cross section for excitation of the 4s (2)S-3d(9)4s(2) (2)D transition in Zn II is small, those for the 3s (2)S-3d (2)D, 4s (2)S (unresolved lines) in Mg II, and the 5s (2)S-4d(9)5s(2) D in Cd II are comparable in magnitude with the cross sections for resonance excitation. In addition, for Cd II it is found that the allowed and forbidden transitions have very similar angular distributions, and it is proposed that excitation to the 2D state may be dominated by a virtual 'double-dipole' transition via the 2P state. Also, the total excitation cross section of the resonance 2P state in Cd II is a factor of four higher than that predicted by the Gaunt factor approximation, suggesting that the accepted value for the oscillator strength may be too low.

The radio properties of cD galaxies in Abell clusters. I - An X-ray selected sample

The radio and X-ray properties of a sample of 27 cD galaxies in rich clusters are presented. The radio data consist of 6 cm VLA maps at a resolution of 1-2 arcsec. The X-ray data consist of images and surface-brightness profiles from the Einstein IPC and derived quantities such as cooling times, mass-accretion rates, and thermal pressures from Arnaud (1988). These data are used to explore the relationship between X-ray cooling cores, and the power and morphology of the radio emission. It is found that 71 percent of the cD's with X-ray cooling cores are radio loud, whereas a smaller but still significant 23 percent of cD's without cooling cores are detected at 6 cm above 0.2 mJy. Among the radio galaxies in noncooling core clusters are luminous and extended wide-angle tails. There is a weak correlation between the mass-accretion rate and the radio power for cD's. There is also an interesting class of cooling core cluster (e.g., A2052) with small diameter, amorphous radio emission that may be the result of diffusion along radial magnetic fields set up in cooling inflows. Finally, the relationships between optical emission-line luminosity with radio power and mass-accretion rate are examined.

The planetary data system educational CD-ROM

The Planetary Data System (PDS) is producing a special educational CD-ROM that contains samples of PDS datasets and is expected to be released in 1993. The CD-ROM will provide university-level instructors with PDS-compatible materials and information that can be used to construct student problem sets using real datasets. The main purposes of the CD-ROM are to facilitate wide use of planetary data and to introduce a large community to the PDS. To meet these objectives the Educational CD-ROM will also contain software to manipulate the data, background discussions about scientific questions that can be addressed with the data, and a suite of exercises that illustrate analysis techniques. Students will also be introduced to the SPICE concept, which is a new way of maintaining geometry and instrument information. The exercises will be presented at the freshman through graduate student levels. With simplification, some of the material should also be of use at the high school level.

CD-ROM preparation: An overview and guide

A primer on the options and procedures involved in producing CD-ROM products in a small to medium sized business operation is presented in language that persons with a minimal technical background can easily understand. The capabilities, limitations, and standards of CD-ROM technology are surveyed. Emphasis is placed on CD-ROM production, especially upon design, data conversion to an electronic medium, data file preparation, the use of vendors, and the steps for in-house production of CD-ROM products.

Use of Concept Mapping to Enhance and Update an Educational CD ROM About Mars

Last year, the Center for Mars Exploration (CMEX) at NASA Ames Research Center issued its 'Return to Mars 1997' educational CD ROM. This CD, produced under the guidance of Dr. Geoffrey Briggs, summarized the on-going exploration of Mars and consisted of six sub-topics: (1) Life on Mars?; (2) Mars, The Red Planet; (3) Human Exploration; (4) Robotic Missions; (5) Atlas and Image Processing; and (6) Links for Teachers. Although the CD contained a wealth of information, its format does not allow ready retrieval of information on a specific topic or concept. CMEX is working with Dr. Alberto Canas and colleagues at the University of West Florida to improve the CD's user interface through the use of concept mapping.

Results of CD-R Media Studies

CD-R may become an excellent way to archive because it has a storage life of about 100 years; however , its recorders, test devices and compatibility with CD-ROM readers need to be verified. Of the 250 sample recordings, every byte was retrievable on some CD-ROM readers.

Development of a (Hg, Cd)Te photodiode detector, Phase 2

High speed sensitive (Hg,Cd)Te photodiode detectors operating in the 77 to 90 K temperature range have been developed for the 10.6 micron spectral region. P-N junctions formed by impurity (gold) diffusion in p-type (Hg, Cd) Te have been investigated. It is shown that the bandwidth and quantum efficiency of a diode are a constant for a fixed ratio of mobility/lifetime ratio of minority carriers. The minority carrier mobility and lifetime uniquely determine the bandwidth and quantum efficiency and indicate the shallow n on p (Hg,Cd) Te diodes are preferable as high performance, high frequency devices.

Radio emission in the directions of cD and related galaxies in poor clusters. III - VLA observations at 20 cm

VLA radio maps and optical identifications of a sample of sources in the directions of 21 Yerkes poor cluster fields are presented. The majority of the cluster radio sources are associated with the dominant D or cD galaxies (approximately 70 percent). Our analysis of dominant galaxies in rich and poor clusters indicates that these giant galaxies are much more often radio emitters (approximately 25 percent of cD's are radio active in the poor clusters), have steeper radio spectra, and have simpler radio morphologies (i.e., double or other linear structure) than other less bright ellipticals. A strong continuum of radio properties in cD galaxies is seen from rich to poor clusters. It is speculated that the location of these dominant galaxies at the cluster centers (i.e., at the bottom of a deep, isolated gravitational potential well) is the crucial factor in explaining their multifrequency activity. Galaxy cannibalism and gas infall models as fueling mechanisms for the observed radio and X-ray emission are discussed

Nitrite reduction in paracoccus halodenitrificans: Evidence for the role of a cd-type cytochrome in ammonia formation

Cell-free extracts prepared from Paracoccus halodenitrificans catalyzed the reduction of nitrate to ammonia in the presence of dithionite and methyl viologen. Enzyme activity was located in the soluble fraction and was associated with a cytochrome whose spectral properties resembled those of a cd-type cytochrome. Unlike the sissimilatory cd-cytochrome nitrate reductase associated with the membrane fraction of P. halodenitrificans, this soluble cd-cytochrome did not reduce nitrite to nitrous oxide.

The environment of D and cD galaxies

The Dressler (1980) morphological sample of galaxies in clusters is used in an investigation of bright galaxy spatial distribution, which has established that such galaxies with luminous extended halos as the D or cD lie on significant cluster galaxy distribution peaks irrespective of whether they are the brightest cluster member. The mean distance of bright D and cD galaxies from local density peaks is of the order of their halo scales, and the positions of bright galaxies of other morphological types are consistent with their being drawn at random from each morphological population. It is noted that local density peaks with associated d ocD galaxies have a mean density 2-3 times greater than peaks without a D or cD.

Photodissociation lifetimes of CH and CD radicals in comets

The rates of photodissociation of the CH radical from absorption of solar radiation are calculated to lie between 0.00416 and 0.0267/sec for heliocentric velocities between -42 and 42 km/sec at 1 AU from the Sun. For CD, the corresponding rates lie between 0.00433 and 0.0131/sec. The v'=0 level of the C2 sigma(+) is the main channel of CH as well as CD dissociation and, in each case, contributes over 77 percent of the total dissociation. The CH and CD radicals may be detectable in comets through absorption lines of the C2 sigma(+) - X2Di(r) electronic bands near 3143.2 and 3142.1 A, respectively.

Compositional redistribution during casting of Hg sub 0.8 Cd sub 0.2 Te alloys

A series of Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te ingots was cast both vertically and horizontally under well-defined thermal conditions by using a two-zone furnace with isothermal heat-pipe liners. The main objective of the experiments was to establish correlations between casting parameters and compositional redistribution and to develop ground-based data for a proposed flight experiment of casting of Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te alloys under reduced gravity conditions. The compositional variations along the axial and radial directions were determined by precision density measurements, infrared transmission spectra, and X-ray energy dispersion spectrometry. Comparison between the experimental results and a numerical simulation of the solidification process of Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te is described.

The cD galaxy in Abell cluster 1775

Over the last 20 years, a number of workers have studied the multiple nuclei cD galaxy in the rich Abell cluster 1775, trying to discover its nature. In all the cases though, very little has been published concerning its morphology. The majority of arguments about the nature of this object have been based on the relative radial velocities of the 2 components with each other and with the other galaxies in the cluster, or its radio morphology. Very little work has been done on the optical morphology. To rectify that lack of data, the authors have obtained charge coupled device (CCD) images of the cD. The authors find from the CCD data that the cD is unlikely to be a bound object and that there is strong evidence for a collision.

The mass and dynamics of cD clusters with cooling flows. 1: ROSAT observations of A 496

As a part of a program to determine the mass distribution of cD galaxy clusters with cooling flows, we obtained a ROSAT image of the cluster A 496. The image reveals sharply peaked emission centered on the cD galaxy. Both the peaked cooling flow emission and the more extended emission filling the cluster are centered on the cD galaxy to within 15 sec. The surface brightness profile is consistent with previous Einstein HRI observations. We measure spatially resolved spectra for the x-ray emission, and find a significant decline in temperature in the innermost 2 to 4 min. We also find a gradient in absorption due to cold neutral gas, with excess absorption, however, is far below previously reported values. We caution that this is a progress report, and that our results are preliminary.

Structure, rotation, and the peculiar velocity cD galaxy in Abell 2107

The radial velocities of 75 galaxies in the field of Abell 2107 were measured within the framework of a program to study the kinematics of cD clusters of galaxies. Sixty-eight of these galaxies are cluster members. The mean observed velocity of A2107 is 12335 +/- 86 km/s, and the velocity dispersion is 672 +67/-52 km/s. The cD galaxy has a peculiar velocity of 270 km/s with respect to the cluster mean. The distribution of velocities is well fitted by a Gaussian, but the velocities are spatially correlated. Simple two-body subcluster models for A2107 are investigated; they are found to be consistent with the observed data and to account for the peculiar velocity of the cD galaxy. Alternatively, the spatial distribution of the velocities is also consistent with rotation of the single cluster at the 98-percent confidence level.

An x ray archive on your desk: The Einstein CD-ROM's

Data from the Einstein Observatory imaging proportional counter (IPC) and high resolution imager (HRI) were released on several CD-ROM sets. The sets released so far include pointed IPC and HRI observations in both simple image and detailed photon event list format, as well as the IPC slew survey. With the data on these CD-ROMS's the user can perform spatial analysis (e.g., surface brightness distributions), spectral analysis (with the IPC event lists), and timing analysis (with the IPC and HRI event lists). The next CD-ROM set will contain IPC unscreened data, allowing the user to perform custom screening to recover, for instance, data during times of lost aspect data or high particle background rates.

CD volume design and verification

In this paper, we describe a prototype for CD-ROM volume design and verification. This prototype allows users to create their own model of CD volumes by modifying a prototypical model. Rule-based verification of the test volumes can then be performed later on against the volume definition. This working prototype has proven the concept of model-driven rule-based design and verification for large quantity of data. The model defined for the CD-ROM volumes becomes a data model as well as an executable specification.
