Quantifying Species Populations in Multivalent Borohydride Electrolytes

Multivalent batteries represent an important beyond Li-ion energy storage concept. The prospect of calcium batteries, in particular, has emerged recently due to novel electrolyte demonstrations, especially that of a ground-breaking combination of the borohydride salt Ca(BH 4 ) 2 dissolved in tetrahydrofuran. Recent analysis of magnesium and calcium versions of this electrolyte led to the identification of divergent speciation pathways for Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ despite identical anions and solvents, owing to differences in cation size and attendant flexibility of coordination. To test these proposed speciation equilibria and develop a more quantitative understanding thereof, we have applied pulsed-field-gradient nuclear magnetic resonance and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy to study these electrolytes. Additionally, concentration-dependent variation in anion diffusivities and solution dipole relaxations, interpreted with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations, confirms these divergent Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ speciation pathways. These results provide a more quantitative description of the electroactive species populations. We find that these species are present in relatively small quantities, even in the highly active Ca(BH 4 ) 2 /tetrahydrofuran electrolyte. This finding helps interpret previous characterizations of metal deposition efficiency and morphology control and thus provides important fundamental insight into the dynamic properties of multivalent electrolytes for next-generation batteries.

Machine Learning-Guided Exploration of Ternary Metal Borohydrides

We employ deep machine learning (ML) combined with first-principles calculations to explore energetically favorable ternary metal borohydrides. Using La–B–H as a prototype system, we demonstrate that iteratively trained ML models can efficiently screen hundreds of thousands of hypothetical structures and accurately select a small fraction of promising structures and compositions for further studies by first-principles calculations. Such an ML-guided approach dramatically accelerates the pace of materials discovery. A number of new La–B–H ternary compounds with formation energies within 100 meV/atom above the known ternary convex hull are discovered, including a known stable La(BH 4 ) 3 phase. Moreover, by replacing La with Group 1, 2, 3, 13, and 14 elements in the four lowest-energy La–B–H structures from our ML-guided predictions, several low-energy X–B-H (X = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, Ac, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) compounds are predicted.

Solid-state NMR and theoretical studies illuminate lanthanum borohydride C–H borylation catalysts confined within a zeolite

Zeolite-supported single-site lanthanum borohydride catalyzes C–H borylation of hydrocarbons, while the related silica-supported complex is inactive under comparable conditions. The identical composition of support-La(BH 4 ) 2 (THF) 2 sites in the two materials implies that the support bestows underlying structural features onto La that are required for bond activation catalysis, yet the nature of these effects, which could include confinement effects and/or electronic modulation of the site itself, remains to be identified. We used solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations with machine-learning potentials (ML-MD) to analyze the electronic and steric effects imparted by the faujasite support on the precatalyst structure to correlate with catalytic activity. ML-MD simulations show that THF dissociates from La under the influence of confinement, leading to coordinatively unsaturated sites in the zeolite pores. Then, the La complex grafts on Brønsted acid sites (La BAS ) or isolated silanols (La SiO ) or remains physisorbed in the zeolite pores. Catalytic studies comparing compounds supported on faujasite zeolites containing or lacking BAS and/or silanols show that only the former complexes lead to active sites, ruling out confinement as the sole requirement for catalysis. The DFT calculations and ML-MD simulations also reveal that the surface-lanthanum coordination number is two (bidentate) for La BAS , with the metal center forming long, flexible bonds to two oxygen atoms bridging Si and Al, but only one oxygen atom (monodentate) for La SiO . The structure–activity relationship identifies confined, BAS-grafted species as active sites and provides important guidance for the design of enhanced atom-efficient catalysts.

Additive Destabilization of Porous Magnesium Borohydride Framework with Core--Shell Structure

Design of interfaces with thermodynamic and kinetic specificity is of great importance for hydrogen storage from both an applied and fundamental perspective. Here, in order to destabilize the metal hydride and protect the dehydrogenated products from oxidizing, a unique core-shell structure of porous Mg(BH4)2-based framework with a thin layer (no more than 5 nm) of MgCl2 additives on the surface, has been proposed and synthesized via a wet-chemical method. The local structure and electronic state of the present complex system are systematically investigated to understand the correlation between the distribution of additives and dehydrogenation property of Mg(BH4)2. A significant improvement is achieved for hydrogen desorption with chlorides: initial hydrogen release from MgCl2 decorated ..gamma..-phase Mg(BH4)2 particles commences at 100 °C and reaches a maximum of 9.4 wt% at 385 °C. Besides the decreased decomposition temperature, an activation barrier of about 76.4 kJ mol-1 lower than that of Mg(BH4)2 without MgCl2 is obtained. Moreover, MgCl2 decoration can also prevent the whole decomposed system (both Mg- and B- elements) from oxidizing, which is a necessary condition to reversibility.

Supported Lanthanum Borohydride Catalyzes CH Borylation Inside Zeolite Micropores

Abstract The zeolite‐supported lanthanide La(BH 4 ) x ‐HY 30 catalyzes C−H borylation of benzene with pinacolborane (HBpin), providing a complementary approach to precious, late transition metal‐catalyzed borylations. The reactive catalytic species are generated from La grafted at the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in micropores of the zeolite, whereas silanoate‐ and aluminoate‐grafted sites are inactive under the reaction conditions. During typical catalytic borylations, conversion to phenyl pinacolborane (PhBpin) is zero‐order in HBpin concentration. A turnover number (TON) of 167 is accessed by capping external silanols, selectively grafting at BAS sites, and adding HBpin slowly to the reaction.

The critical role of configurational flexibility in facilitating reversible reactive metal deposition from borohydride solutions

Development of calcium metal batteries has been historically frustrated by a lack of electrolytes capable of supporting reversible calcium electrodeposition. In this paper, we report the study of an electrolyte consisting of Ca(BH 4 ) 2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) to gain important insight into the role of the liquid solvation environment in facilitating the reversible electrodeposition of this highly reactive, divalent metal. Through interrogation of the Ca 2+ solvation environment and comparison with Mg 2+ analogs, we show that an ability to reversibly electrodeposit metal at reasonable rates is strongly regulated by dication charge density and polarizability. Our results indicate that the greater polarizability of Ca 2+ over Mg 2+ confers greater configurational flexibility, enabling ionic cluster formation via neutral multimer intermediates. Increased concentration of the proposed electroactive species, CaBH 4 + , enables rapid and stable delivery of Ca 2+ to the electrode interface. Finally, this work helps set the stage for future progress in the development of electrolytes for calcium and other divalent metal batteries.
