Efficient Binary Static Code Data Flow Analysis Using Unsupervised Learning

The ever increasing need to ensure that code is reliably, efficiently and safely constructed has fueled the evolution of popular static binary code analysis tools. In identifying potential coding flaws in binaries, tools such as IDA Pro are used to disassemble the binaries into an opcode/assembly language format in support of manual static code analysis. Because of the highly manual and resource intensive nature involved with analyzing large binaries, the probability of overlooking potential coding irregularities and inefficiencies is quite high. In this paper, a light-weight data, unsupervised data flow methodology is described which uses highly-correlated data flow graph (CDFGs) to identify coding irregularities such that analysis time and required computing resources are minimized. Such analysis accuracy and efficiency gains are achieved by using a combination of graph analysis and unsupervised machine learning techniques which allows an analyst to focus on the most statistically significant flow patterns while performing binary static code analysis.

Forensic Analysis of SOHO Router Binaries

Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) routers are used by millions of consumers across the United States, and are commensurately vulnerable. Forensic analysis of SOHO router firmware helps to understand and mitigate those vulnerabilities. This poster focused particularly on analysis of BusyBox executables, a software suite that provides several Unix utilities in a single file. Three main tools were used to analyze the binaries. BinWalk was used to extract the files, but also to build entropy graphs, extract Linux kernel images, and identify CPU architectures; WiiBin processed the binaries to find endianness, architecture, the percent compressed/encrypted, and compiler data; and @DisCo, a machine learning tool used to determine function similarity in disassembled binaries, analyzed similarities and determined versions of extracted BusyBox files from each router. These tools found that venders from all five routers utilized the same version of the BusyBox software across different firmware updates, demonstrating the importance of constant firmware scrutiny to protect against security vulnerabilities.

Prediction of crystal structures and motifs in the Fe–Mg–O system at Earth’s core pressures

Abstract Fe, Mg, and O are among the most abundant elements in terrestrial planets. While the behavior of the Fe–O, Mg–O, and Fe–Mg binary systems under pressure have been investigated, there are still very few studies of the Fe–Mg–O ternary system at relevant Earth’s core and super-Earth’s mantle pressures. Here, we use the adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) to study ternary Fe x Mg y O z phases in a wide range of stoichiometries at 200 GPa and 350 GPa. We discovered three dynamically stable phases with stoichiometries FeMg 2 O 4 , Fe 2 MgO 4, and FeMg 3 O 4 with lower enthalpy than any known combination of Fe–Mg–O high-pressure compounds at 350 GPa. With the discovery of these phases, we construct the Fe–Mg–O ternary convex hull. We further clarify the composition- and pressure-dependence of structural motifs with the analysis of the AGA-found stable and metastable structures. Analysis of binary and ternary stable phases suggest that O, Mg, or both could stabilize a BCC iron alloy at inner core pressures.

RAMSeS: Rapid Analysis of Mission Software Systems

Over the past few decades, software has become ubiquitous as it has been integrated into nearly every aspect of society, including household appliances, consumer electronics, industrial control systems, public utilities, government operations, and military systems. Consequently, many critical national security questions can no longer be answered convincingly without understanding software, including its purpose, its capabilities, its flaws, its communication, or how it processes and stores data. As software continues to become larger, more complex, and more widespread, our ability to answer important mission questions and reason about software in a timely way is falling behind. Today, to achieve such understanding of third-party software, we rely predominantly on the ability of reverse engineering experts to manually answer each particular mission question for every software system of interest. This approach often requires heroic human effort that nevertheless fails to meet current mission needs and will never scale to meet future needs. The result is an emerging crisis: a massive and expanding gap between the national security need to answer mission questions about software and our ability to do so. Sandia National Laboratories has established the Rapid Analysis of Mission Software Systems (RAMSeS) effort, a collaborative long-term effort aimed at dramatically improving our nation’s ability to answer mission questions about third-party software by growing an ecosystem of tools that augment the human reverse engineer through automation, interoperability, and reuse. Focusing on static analysis of binary programs, we are attempting to identify reusable software analysis components that advance our ability to reason about software, to automate useful aspects of the software analysis process, and to integrate new methodologies and capabilities into a working ecosystem of tools and experts. We aim to integrate existing tools where possible, adapt tools when modest modifications will enable them to interoperate, and implement missing capability when necessary. Although we do hope to automate a growing set of analysis tasks, we will approach this goal incrementally by assisting the human in an ever-widening range of tasks.

Modeling and Analysis of a Novel Offshore Binary Species Free-Floating Longline Macroalgal Farming System

The investigation of innovative macroalgal cultivation is important and needed to optimize farming operations, increase biomass production, reduce the impact on the ecosystem, and lower system and operational costs. However, most macroalgal farming systems (MFSs) are stationary, which need to occupy a substantial coastal area, require extensive investment in farm infrastructure, and cost high fertilizer and anchoring expenses. This study aims to model, analyze, and support a novel binary species free-floating longline macroalgal cultivation concept. The expected outcomes could provide a basis for the design and application of the novel MFS to improve biomass production, decrease costs, and reduce the impact on the local ecosystem. In this paper, Saccharina latissima and Nereocystis luetkeana were modeled and validated, and coupled with longline to simulate the binary species MFS free float in various growth periods and associated locations along the US west coast. Further, the numerical predictions indicated the possibility of failure on the longline and breakage at the kelp holdfasts is low. However, the large forces due to an instantaneous change in dynamic loads caused by loss of hydrostatic buoyancy when the longline stretches out of the water would damage the kelps. Buoy-longline contact interactions could damage the buoy, resulting in the loss of the system by sinking. Furthermore, the kelp-longline and kelp-kelp entanglements could potentially cause kelp damage.

Nickel(ii) complexes based on dithiolate–polyamine binary ligand systems: crystal structures, hirshfeld surface analysis, theoretical study, and catalytic activity study on photocatalytic hydrogen generation

To ascertain the influence of binary ligand systems [1,1-dicyanoethylene-2,2-dithiolate (i-mnt -2 ) and polyamine {tetraen = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, tren = diethylene triamine and opda = o-phenylenediamine}] on the coordination modes of the Ni(II) metal center and resulting supramolecular architectures, a series of nickel(II) thiolate complexes [Ni(tetraen)(i-mnt)](DMSO) (1), [Ni 2 (tren) 2 (i-mnt) 2 ] (2), and [Ni 2 (i-mnt) 2 (opda) 2 ] n (3) have been synthesized in high yield in one step in water and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic techniques. X-ray diffraction studies disclose the diverse i-mnt -2 coordination to the Ni +2 center in the presence of active polyamine ligands, forming a slightly distorted octahedral geometry (NiN 4 S 2 ) in 1, square planar (NiS 4 ) and distorted octahedral geometries (NiN 6 ) in the bimetallic co-crystallized aggregate of cationic [Ni(tren) 2 ] +2 and anionic [Ni(i-mnt) 2 ] -2 in 2, and a one dimensional (1D) polymeric chain along the [100] axis in 3, having consecutive square planar (NiS 4 ) and octahedral (NiN 6 ) coordination kernels. The N–H···O, N–H···S, N–H···N, N–H···S, N–H···N, and N–H···O type hydrogen bonds stabilize the supramolecular assemblies in 1, 2, and 3 respectively imparting interesting graph-set-motifs. The molecular Hirshfeld surface analyses (HS) and 2D fingerprint plots were utilized for decoding all types of non-covalent contacts in the crystal networks. Atomic HS analysis of the Ni +2 centers reveals significant Ni–N metal–ligand interactions compared to Ni–S interactions. We have also studied the unorthodox interactions observed in the solid state structures of 1–3 by QTAIM and NBO analyses. Moreover, all the complexes proved to be highly active water reduction co-catalysts (WRC) in a photo-catalytic hydrogen evolution process involving iridium photosensitizers, wherein 2 and 3 having a square planar arrangement around the nickel center(s) – were found to be the most active ones, achieving 1000 and 1119 turnover numbers (TON), respectively.

Chandra Discovery of a Candidate Hyperluminous X-Ray Source in MCG+11-11-032

We present a multiwavelength analysis of MCG+11-11-032, a nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN), with a unique classification as being both a binary and a dual AGN candidate. With new Chandra observations, we aim to resolve any dual AGN system via imaging data and search for signs of a binary AGN via analysis of the X-ray spectrum. Analyzing the Chandra spectrum, we find no evidence of the previously suggested double-peaked Fe Kα lines; the spectrum is instead best fit by an absorbed power law with a single Fe Kα line, as well as an additional line centered at ≈7.5 keV. The Chandra observation reveals faint, soft, and extended X-ray emission, possibly linked to low-level nuclear outflows. Further analysis shows evidence for a compact hard source—MCG+11-11-032 X2—located 3.″3 from the primary AGN. Modeling MCG+11-11-032 X2 as a compact source, we find that it is relatively luminous (L2–10 keV=1.5−0.5+0.9×1041erg s$^{−1}$), and the location is coincident with a compact and off-nuclear source resolved in Hubble Space Telescope infrared (F105W) and optical (F621M, F547M) bands. Pairing our X-ray results with a 144 MHz radio detection at the host galaxy location, we observe X-ray and radio properties similar to those of ESO 243-49 HLX-1, suggesting that MCG+11-11-032 X2 may be a hyperluminous X-ray source. This detection with Chandra highlights the importance of a high-resolution X-ray imager as well as how previous binary AGN candidates detected with large-aperture instruments can benefit from high-resolution follow-up. Future spatially resolved optical spectra, and deeper X-ray observations, can better constrain the origin of MCG+11-11-032 X2.

Biosequence-based approach to analyzing binaries

In a dynamic computing environment, it is a nontrivial task to verify code running in the environment because most approaches to software similarity require extensive and time-consuming analysis of a binary, or the approaches fail to recognize executables that are similar but nonidentical. A biosequence-based method for quantifying similarity of executable binaries is used to identify allowed codes in a real-world multi-user environment.

Direct nonparametric multimessenger constraints on the equation of state of cold dense nuclear matter

We utilize the now substantial amount of astrophysical observations of neutron stars (NSs), along with perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations at high density, to directly constrain the NS equation of state (EOS). To this end, we construct nonparametric EOS priors by using Gaussian processes trained on 75 EOSs, which include models with either hadrons, hyperons, or quarks at high densities. We create a prior using the full EOS sample (model agnostic), and one prior for each EOS family to test model discrimination. We introduce a novel inference approach, which allows the simultaneous sampling of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of binary NS mergers, as well as a nonparametric equation of state. We showcase this method in a Bayesian updating scheme by first performing a complete analysis of the binary NS merger event GW170817 with minimal assumptions, and sequentially adding information from x-ray and radio NS observations, along with pQCD calculations. Besides providing standard constraints, such as the pressure at twice nuclear saturation density 𝑝⁡(2⁢𝜌 sat ) = 4.3$^{+0.6}_{−0.6}$ × 10 34 dyne/cm 2 , at 95% confidence level, for the model agnostic prior, our methodology shows how the choice of EOS families used in conditioning changes the inferred astrophysical properties of the EOS, namely tidal deformability and maximum supported NS mass. We find hyperonic priors predicting higher tidal deformabilities for a 1.4⁢𝑀 ⊙ NS, and hadronic priors being preferred by the considered astrophysical data.

Orbital Evolution of Binary Black Holes in Active Galactic Nucleus Disks: A Disk Channel for Binary Black Hole Mergers?

We perform a series of high-resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations of equal-mass binary black holes (BBHs) embedded in active galactic nucleus (AGN) accretion disks to study whether these binaries can be driven to merger by the surrounding gas. We find that the gravitational softening adopted for the BBH has a profound impact on this result. When the softening is less than 10% of the binary separation, we show that, in agreement with recent simulations of isolated equal-mass binaries, prograde BBHs expand in time rather than contract. Eventually, however, the binary separation becomes large enough that the tidal force of the central AGN disrupts them. Only when the softening is relatively large do we find that prograde BBHs harden. We determine through detailed analysis of the binary torque, that this dichotomy is due to a loss of spiral structure in the circum-single disks orbiting each black hole when the softening is a significant fraction of the binary separation. Properly resolving these spirals—both with high resolution and small softening—results in a significant source of binary angular momentum. Only for retrograde BBHs do we find consistent hardening, regardless of softening, as these BBHs lack the important spiral structure in their circum-single disks. This suggests that the gas-driven inspiral of retrograde binaries can produce a population of compact BBHs in the gravitational-wave-emitting regime in AGN disks, which may contribute a large fraction to the observed BBH mergers.

Thermodynamic analysis of a two-stage binary-fluid ejector heat pump water heater

Ejector heat pump water heaters (EHPWHs) could significantly increase the thermal efficiency of domestic water heating and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study addresses two major technical barriers to using EHPWHs in domestic water heating—low heating cycle coefficient of performance (COP) and low condensation temperatures—using binary fluid pairs as a working fluid in a two-stage ejector system. A comprehensive, geometry-free model of binary-fluid ejectors was built and validated to predict the entrainment ratios of binary-fluid ejectors. A thermodynamic model of a two-stage binary-fluid ejector EHPWH was built to predict the heating cycle COP of EHPWHs. The performance of the EHPWH was theoretically evaluated using HFE7000 and Novec649 as primary fluids and R600 and R1234ze(Z) as secondary fluids. HFE7000/R600 gave the highest heating cycle COP (i.e., 1.356) in producing domestic hot water at 60.0 °C. An optimum evaporation temperature of the primary fluid was identified for the maximum effective entrainment ratio and effective pressure lift ratio of two-stage ejectors. Here, the effective entrainment ratio of the two-stage ejector dominated the heating cycle COP of the EHPWH. Primary fluids with lower latent heats of evaporation and/or secondary fluids with higher latent heats of evaporation yielded higher heating cycle COPs of EHPWHs.

BVR{sub C}I{sub C} Observations and Analysis of the UV LEO-type Binary, the Pre-WUMa, V1023 Persei

V1023 Per is a polar spotted, but well-detached dwarf binary, very likely a Pre-WUMa eclipsing binary. It was observed on 11 nights in 2015 October, November, and December at Dark Sky Observatory in North Carolina with the 0.81 m reflector of Appalachian State University. The period behavior is complex and may be increasing with a cubic or quadratic ephemeris. Its odd light curves are of high amplitude but have no totality and reach maximum light just before and following the secondary eclipse, indicating that it has polar spots similar to UV Leo. The 28 yr orbital period study calls the attention of observers to further monitor this binary to understand the complex nature of the period evolution. Its presently fixed polar spot does indicate that it must have a strong magnetic field and that it is synchronously rotating. The BVR{sub c}I{sub c} simultaneous 2016 Wilson–Devinney program (W-D) solution gives fillouts of 68% and 75% for the primary and secondary components, respectively. The polar position of the spot, its radius (24°), and T-fact (0.75) indicate that a strong magnetic field is present. The small ΔT in the components (∼289 K) show that the stars are similar in spectral type despite them being well detached. The inclination is high, ∼85.°19 ± 0.°04, but there is not a total eclipse due to the high mass ratio (∼0.739 ± 0.001). Due to the low galactic position (longitude = 150.°390, latitude = −1.°023), its reddening is addressed. The primary components temperature is estimated to be 5250 ± 250 K.

The Gravity Collective: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Electromagnetic Search for the Binary Neutron Star Merger GW190425

We present an ultraviolet to infrared search for the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart to GW190425, the second ever binary neutron star merger discovered by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration. GW190425 was more distant and had a larger localization area than GW170817, so we use a new tool, Teglon, to redistribute the GW190425 localization probability in the context of galaxy catalogs within the final localization volume. We derive a 90th percentile area of 6688 deg 2 , a ∼1.5× improvement relative to the LIGO/Virgo map, and show how Teglon provides an order-of-magnitude boost to the search efficiency of small (≤1 deg 2 ) field-of-view instruments. We combine our data with a large, publicly reported imaging data set, covering 9078.59 deg 2 of unique area and 48.13% of the LIGO/Virgo-assigned localization probability, to calculate the most comprehensive kilonova (KN), short gamma-ray burst (sGRB) afterglow, and model-independent constraints on the EM emission from a hypothetical counterpart to GW190425 to date under the assumption that no counterpart was found in these data. If the counterpart were similar to AT 2017gfo, there would be a 28.4% chance of it being detected in the combined data set. We are relatively insensitive to an on-axis sGRB, and rule out a generic transient with a similar peak luminosity and decline rate as AT 2017gfo to 30% confidence. Finally, across our new imaging and publicly reported data, we find 28 candidate optical counterparts that we cannot rule out as being associated with GW190425, finding that four such counterparts discovered within the localization volume and within 5 days of merger exhibit luminosities consistent with a KN.

The SPAN512 mid-latitude pulsar survey at the Nançay Radio Telescope

The large number of ongoing surveys for pulsars and transients at various radio observatories is motivated by the science obtained from these sources. Timing and polarisation analysis of relativistic binaries can place strong constraints on theories of gravity. The observation of a growing number of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) spread over the celestial sphere may allow the detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background arising from supermassive black hole binaries. A more complete sample of young pulsars improves our knowledge of neutron star birth and evolution. Transients such as fast radio bursts can serve to probe the intergalactic medium. The SPAN512 pulsar survey covers intermediate Galactic latitudes using the L-band receiver of the Nançay Radio Telescope (NRT). The survey covers 224 sq. deg. of the sky for a total exposure time of 2200 h. Population syntheses predict the discovery of 3 to 19 new normal pulsars and a few MSPs. We present detailed modelling of the NRT beam with its L-band receiver and its sensitivity which we used to precisely assess the expected survey yield. We used the flexible Pulsar Arecibo L-band Feed Array data processing pipeline to search the 47 TB of SPAN512 data for pulsars and transients. The SPAN512 survey discovered two new MSPs and one new middle-aged pulsar. We focus on the analysis of the 2.4-ms spin period pulsar J2205+6012 for which we also report the detection of gamma-ray pulsations. Its narrow pulse width (35µs at an observing frequency of 2.55 GHz) allows for sub-microsecond timing precision over 8 yr, with exciting prospects for pulsar timing array programs.

Compromising Charge Generation and Recombination with Asymmetric Molecule for High-Performance Binary Organic Photovoltaics with Over 18% Certified Efficiency

Balancing the charge generation and recombination constitutes a major challenge to break the current limit of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Here, to address this issue, an asymmetric non-fullerene acceptor, namely the AC9, is developed and high-performance OPV with a champion efficiency of 18.43% (18.1% certified) is demonstrated. This represents the record value among binary OPVs. Comprehensive analysis on exciton dissociation, charge collection, carrier transport, and recombination has been carried out, unveiling that the improved device performance of asymmetric AC9-based OPVs is originated from a better compromise between charge generation and non-radiative charge recombination, compared with the corresponding symmetric ones. This work provides a high-performing molecule and paves the way for high-performance OPVs through asymmetric molecular design.

Probing the origin of the two-component structure of broad-line region by reverberation mapping of an extremely variable quasar

ABSTRACT The physical origins of quasar components, such as the broad-line region (BLR) and dust torus, remain under debate. To gain insights into them, we focused on changing-state quasars (CSQs) which provide a unique perspective through structural changes associated with accretion disc state transitions. We targeted SDSS J125809.31+351943.0, an extremely variable CSQ, to study its central core structure and kinematics. We conducted reverberation mapping with optical spectroscopy to explore the structure of the BLR and estimate the black hole mass. The results from Hβ reverberation mapping indicated a black hole mass of $10^{9.64^{+0.11}_{-0.20}}\rm {M_\odot }$. Additionally, we analysed variations in the optical to X-ray spectral indices, αox, before and after the state transition, to investigate the accretion disc. These variations in αox and the Eddington ratio (from 0.4 per cent to 2.4 per cent) exhibitied behaviour similar to state transitions observed in X-ray binary systems. Spectral analysis of Hβ revealed a predominantly double-peaked profile during dim periods, transitioning to include a single-peaked component as the quasar brightened, suggesting that Hβ contains a mixture of two components. Each of these components has its distinct characteristics: the first is a double-peaked profile that remains stable despite changes in the accretion rate, while the second is a variable single-peaked profile. Using time-lags from reverberation mapping, we estimated the spatial relationships between these BLR components, the accretion disc, and the dust torus. Our results suggest that the BLR consists of two distinct components, each differing in location and origin.

Ultracompact hybrid stars consistent with multimessenger astrophysics

In this work, we consider the consequences of phase transition in dense QCD on the properties of compact stars and implications for the observational program in gravitational wave and x-ray astrophysics. The key underlying assumption of our modeling is a strong first-order phase transition past the point where the hadronic branch of compact stars reaches the two-solar mass limit. Furthermore, our analysis predicts ultracompact stars with very small radii—in the range of 6–9 km—living on compact star sequences that are entirely consistent with the current multimessenger data. We show that sequences featuring two-solar mass hadronic stars consistent with radio-pulsar observations are also consistent with the inferences of large radii for massive neutron stars by NICER x-ray observations of neutron stars and the small radii predicted by gravitational waves analysis of the binary neutron star inspiral event GW170817 for our models that feature a strong first-order QCD phase transition.
