Site Suitability and Air Pollution Impacts of Composting Infrastructure for California’s Organic Waste Diversion Law

The emerging field of polaritonic chemistry explores the behavior of molecules under strong coupling with cavity modes. Despite recent developments in ab initio polaritonic methods for simulating polaritonic chemistry under electronic strong coupling, their capabilities are limited, especially in cases where the molecule also features strong electronic correlation. To bridge this gap, we have developed a novel method for cavity QED calculations utilizing the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm in conjunction with the Pauli–Fierz Hamiltonian. Our approach is applied to investigate the effect of the cavity on the S0–S1 transition of n-oligoacenes, with n ranging from 2 to 5, encompassing 22 fully correlated π orbitals in the largest pentacene molecule. Our findings indicate that the influence of the cavity intensifies with larger acenes. Additionally, we demonstrate that, unlike the full determinantal representation, DMRG efficiently optimizes and eliminates excess photonic degrees of freedom, resulting in an asymptotically constant computational cost as the photonic basis increases.

Entangled spin-polarized excitons from singlet fission in a rigid dimer

Abstract Singlet fission, a process that splits a singlet exciton into a biexciton, has promise in quantum information. We report time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance measurements on a conformationally well-defined acene dimer molecule, TIPS-BP1', designed to exhibit strongly state-selective relaxation to specific magnetic spin sublevels. The resulting optically pumped spin polarization is a nearly pure initial state from the ensemble. The long-lived spin coherences modulate the signal intrinsically, allowing a measurement scheme that substantially removes noise and uncertainty in the magnetic resonance spectra. A nonadiabatic transition theory with a minimal number of spectroscopic parameters allows the quantitative assignment and interpretation of the spectra. In this work, we show that the rigid dimer TIPS-BP1' supports persistent spin coherences at temperatures far higher than those used in conventional superconducting quantum hardware.

Voltage-dependent excitation dynamics in UV-absorbing organic photovoltaics with efficient charge transfer exciton emission

Intermolecular charge-transfer excitons play a central role in determining the performance of organic solar cells as their voltage-dependent formation, dissociation, and recombination dynamics contribute to photocurrent generation, radiative/nonradiative voltage losses, and photovoltaic fill factor. Here, we explore the properties of brightly-emitting wide energy gap (>2 eV) charge transfer excitons by measuring the voltage-dependent photoluminescence, photocurrent, and ultrafast pump–probe transient absorption spectra of organic solar cells employing five UV-absorbing donor molecules that differ only by the length of the oligophenylene or acene group at their core. We find that organic solar cells with a strong correlation between their voltage-dependent photocurrent and charge-transfer exciton photoluminescence have low photovoltaic fill factors as they require voltage to facilitate efficient charge-transfer exciton dissociation. In contrast, solar cells that are efficient can readily generate charges without an applied field and have a separate population of tightly-bound charge-transfer excitons that are responsible for emission. Furthermore, considering that the sum of all excitation loss rates (i.e., recombination and charge extraction) must be equal to the excitation generation rate in the steady state, these voltage-dependent data allow us to solve for the voltage-dependent fate of all excitations in the solar cells and estimate upper and lower bounds for geminate and non-geminate recombination, respectively.

High-Resolution IR Absorption Spectroscopy of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the 3-micrometers Region: Role of Periphery

In this work we report on high-resolution IR absorption studies that provide a detailed view on how the peripheral structure of irregular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) affects the shape and position of their 3-micrometers absorption band. To this purpose we present mass-selected, high-resolution absorption spectra of cold and isolated phenanthrene, pyrene, benz[a]antracene, chrysene, triphenylene, and perylene molecules in the 2950-3150 per cm range. The experimental spectra are compared with standard harmonic calculations, and anharmonic calculations using a modified version of the SPECTRO program that incorporates a Fermi resonance treatment utilizing intensity redistribution. We show that the 3-micrometers region is dominated by the effects of anharmonicity, resulting in many more bands than would have been expected in a purely harmonic approximation. Importantly, we find that anharmonic spectra as calculated by SPECTRO are in good agreement with the experimental spectra. Together with previously reported high-resolution spectra of linear acenes, the present spectra provide us with an extensive dataset of spectra of PAHs with a varying number of aromatic rings, with geometries that range from open to highly-condensed structures, and featuring CH groups in all possible edge configurations. We discuss the astrophysical implications of the comparison of these spectra on the interpretation of the appearance of the aromatic infrared 3-micrometers band, and on features such as the two-component emission character of this band and the 3-micrometers emission plateau.

Quantitative intramolecular fission in oligoacenes, materials, and methods of use thereof

The present invention provides soluble, stable singlet fission (SF) compounds, compositions, materials, methods of their use, and methods for their preparation that provide efficient intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) and multiple excitons. The SF compound may be a dimer, an oligomer, or a polymer of polyoligoacenes, where for example, the compound achieves a triplet yield reaching about 200% per absorbed photon. In this system, SF does not depend on intermolecular inter-actions. Instead, SF is an intrinsic property of the molecule and therefore occurs independent of intermolecular interactions. Singlet fission has the potential to significantly improve the photocurrent in single junction solar cells and thus raise the Shockley-Queisser power conversion efficiency limit from about 33% to about 46% or greater. Quantitative SF yield at room temperature has only been observed in crystalline solids or aggregates of higher acenes.

Plasmons Enable Ultralow Threshold Solid-State Triplet Fusion Upconversion with a 2D Sensitizer

Solid-state triplet−triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion has significant potential for application in light harvesting, optoelectronic devices, and bioimaging. However, the high optical powers required to achieve efficient upconversion have inhibited its adoption. In this work, we demonstrate plasmon-enhanced near-infrared (NIR)-to-blue TTA upconversion in a monolayer WSe2/organic heterojunction. Under far-field excitation, the device reaches a threshold of 19 mW/cm 2 and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.17% with an anti-Stokes shift of 1.1 eV. Plasmon excitation lowers the threshold to 0.9 mW/cm 2 and improves the EQE to 3.6%. We attribute the plasmon enhancement to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) near-field enhancement and dark-exciton absorption. Optimization of the WSe 2 transfer process is identified as a key factor for the device performance. This work demonstrates that plasmon excitation overcomes the low far-field absorption of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) sensitizers. Consequently, monolayer TMDs can achieve solid-state upconversion with a performance among the best reported.

Low-Threshold Visible-to-Ultraviolet Solid-State Triplet-Fusion Upconversion

Visible-to-ultraviolet (UV) triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion is an energy-relevant photon-management strategy that converts visible photons into UV photons capable of driving high-energy photochemical processes. Practical implementation requires solid-state thin films, which often require high excitation power. Here, we demonstrate the first solid-state visible-to-UV TTA upconversion thin-film device, using 1,4-bis((tricyclopentylsilyl)ethynyl)naphthalene (TCPS-NAP) as the annihilator and tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy) 3 ) as the sensitizer on silver. Under incoherent 455 nm excitation, the device exhibits blue-to-UV upconversion with a threshold of 4.8 mW/cm 2 . Using surface plasmons in the planar silver film, we achieve green-to-UV upconversion with a 1.11 eV anti-Stokes shift and 6.9 mW/cm 2 threshold, a 12.2 × threshold enhancement over far-field 532 nm excitation. In solution, TCPS-NAP shows excimer-dominated anti-Stokes emission rather than UV upconversion. These results establish a platform for harvesting low-intensity visible light to drive UV processes while demonstrating that solution-phase screening does not predict solid-state upconversion performance.

Optimized attenuated interaction: Enabling stochastic Bethe–Salpeter spectra for large systems

We develop an improved stochastic formalism for the Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE), based on an exact separation of the effective-interaction W into two parts, W = (W – vW) + vW, where the latter is formally any translationally invariant interaction, vW(r – r'). When optimizing the fit of the exchange kernel vW to W, using a stochastic sampling W, the difference W – vW becomes quite small. Then, in the main BSE routine, this small difference is stochastically sampled. Furthermore, the number of stochastic samples needed for an accurate spectrum is then largely independent of system size. While the method is formally cubic in scaling, the scaling prefactor is small due to the constant number of stochastic orbitals needed for sampling W.
