Accomplishments of Sandia and Kitware CMake/CTest/CDash Contract for (FY2017-2020)

We describe the accomplishments jointly achieved by Kitware and Sandia over the fiscal years 2016 through 2020 to benefit the Advanced Scientific Computed (ASC) Advanced Technology Development and Mitigation (ATDM) project. As a result of our collaboration, we have improved the Trilinos and ATDM application developer experience by decreasing the time to build, making it easier to identify and resolve build and test defects, and addressing other issues . We have also reduced the turnaround time for continuous integration (CI) results. For example, the combined improvements likely cut the wall clock time to run automated builds of Trilinos posting to CDash by approximately 6x or more in many cases. We primarily achieved these benefits by contributing changes to the Kitware CMake/CTest/CDash suite of open source software development support tools. As a result, ASC developers can now spend more time improving code and less time chasing bugs. And, without this work, one can argue that the stabilization of Trilinos for the ATDM platforms would not have been feasible which would have had a large negative impact on an important internal FY20 L1 milestone.

Sandia Academic Alliance Program Collaboration Report: 2020-2021 Accomplishments

University partnerships play an essential role in sustaining Sandia’s vitality as a national laboratory. The SAA is an element of Sandia’s broader University Partnerships program, which facilitates recruiting and research collaborations with dozens of universities annually. The SAA program has two three-year goals. SAA aims to realize a step increase in hiring results, by growing the total annual inexperienced hires from each out-of-state SAA university. SAA also strives to establish and sustain strategic research partnerships by establishing several federally sponsored collaborations and multi-institutional consortiums in science & technology (S&T) priorities such as autonomy, advanced computing, hypersonics, quantum information science, and data science. The SAA program facilitates access to talent, ideas, and Research & Development facilities through strong university partnerships. Earlier this year, the SAA program and campus executives hosted John Myers, Sandia’s former Senior Director of Human Resources (HR) and Communications, and senior-level staff at Georgia Tech, U of Illinois, Purdue, UNM, and UT Austin. These campus visits provided an opportunity to share the history of the partnerships from the university leadership, tours of research facilities, and discussions of ongoing technical work and potential recruiting opportunities. These visits also provided valuable feedback to HR management that will help Sandia realize a step increase in hiring from SAA schools. The 2020-2021 Collaboration Report is a compilation of accomplishments in 2020 and 2021 from SAA and Sandia’s valued SAA university partners.

External Release of Organic Scintillator DRiFT Software - Technology Evaluation and Demonstration Project Accomplishments [Slides]

Overview and Objectives: DRiFT post processes radiation transport output from MCNP, and generates realistic nuclear instrumentation response; Organic scintillator response has been developed, tested, and validated with measurements, these instruments are widely used in nuclear safeguards. At the beginning of this project, DRiFT was only available to LANL employees with access to yellow High Performance Computing clusters. Additionally, there are many complicated external software dependencies. Our TED project request proposed using funds to: Comment and clean up code, friendly testing, generating test suites and examples; Expansion of scintillator types natively supported by DRiFT; External release of DRiFT accompanied by documentation. We accomplished all objectives (and many others), they are highlighted in these slides.

2022 Accomplishments Report Template

Chromium-doped UO 2 fuels is an industrially important Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) due to the ability to increase the average grain size relative to standard UO 2 . However, there is a lack of knowledge of the thermophysical properties of these doped fuels, which is necessary for accurately modeling the in-pile performance. The work accomplished this FY focused on developing large grain Cr-doped UO 2 pellets as a function of Cr content and subsequently measuring the thermophysical and mechanical properties. The microstructural variations were also investigated to evaluate chromium formation within the microstructure of the sintered pellets.

Accelerator Physics at NSLS-II: Research Accomplishments in 2023

NSLS-II accelerator physicists provided operation support for user operations and machine start-ups, carried out routine lattice characterization, and produced regular reports on beam dynamics. The commissioning of a superconducting wiggler for the HEX beamline is complete, and the wiggler effects on beam dynamics have been studied. A Facility Improvement Project for absolute lattice characterization has been approved and funded. We implemented and tested a new orbit-based technique of lattice characterization and correction. We developed a theory to calculate the beam-induced power in ceramic vacuum chambers and a new convergence map technique for nonlinear lattice characterization. We continued working on the NSLS-II upgrade including lattice development, commissioning a low-energy complex bend prototype, analyzing beam sensitivity to various errors, implementing higher-harmonic RF cavities, studying collective effects, and assessing FEL options. We also supported lattice optimization and beam diagnostics development for the EIC project. Main research accomplishments achieved in 2023, are summarized in this report.

DOE SCGSR Final Report - Project Accomplishments and Additional Materials

The major accomplishments of my project were successfully developing and testing the laser interferometry diagnostic on the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This diagnostic helped advance my research by providing a simpler way to obtain electron density measurements of magnetized plasmas compared to other electron density diagnostics such as triple Langmuir probes. The laser used was a 561 nm continuous wave (CW) diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser. The PLX laser interferometry diagnostic consists of two parts. These include the launching and receiving sides of the laser diagnostic. The launching side consists of the main laser beam from the DPSS laser being split into five chords(probe beams) and a reference beam which are then directed with fiber optic couplers into fiber optic cables which transmit the probe beamsto the PLX vacuum chamber. The probe beams then pass through the plasma in the chamber and into the receiving side optics where they are again directed through fiber optic cables to be combined with the reference beam. The combined beams are transmitted via multi-mode fiber optic cables to photodiodes to convert the light signals into electrical signals. Before the electrical signals get digitized, they pass through bandpass and low pass filters to eliminate electromagnetic noise and unwanted frequencies. The electrical signals are then processed by IQ demodulators to determine phase angle difference between the probe and reference beams for each chord in order to calculate line-integrated electron density.

LWRS 2019 Accomplishments Report

Nuclear energy is an important part of supplying our nation’s energy—safely, dependably, and economically—with reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The United States (U.S.) Department of Energy-Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) supports a strong and viable domestic nuclear industry. In collaboration with industry programs, the Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program supports the continued operation of the commercial fleet of nuclear power plants. DOE’s role in this program focuses on enhancing the safe, efficient, and economical performance of the nation’s nuclear fleet. This report describes the accomplishments of the LWRS Program during Fiscal Year 2019. DOE-NE’s0F primary mission is to advance nuclear power as a resource capable of making major contributions in meeting the nation’s energy supply, environmental, and energy security needs. Under the guidance of three research objectives, NE resolves barriers to technical, cost, safety, security, and proliferation resistance through early stage research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) to: • Enhance the long-term viability and competitiveness of the existing U.S. reactor fleet • Develop an advanced reactor pipeline • Implement and maintain national strategic fuel-cycle and supply-chain infrastructures.
