Nuclear energy density functionals grounded in ab initio calculations

Here, we discuss the construction of a nuclear energy density functional (EDF) from ab initio computations and advocate the need for a methodical approach that is free from ad hoc assumptions. The equations of state (EoSs) of symmetric nuclear and pure neutron matter are computed using the chiral NNLO sat and the phenomenological AV4' + UIX c Hamiltonians as inputs to self-consistent Green's function (SCGF) and auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) methods. We propose a convenient parametrization of the EoS as a function of the Fermi momentum and fit it on the SCGF and AFDMC calculations. We apply the ab initio based EDF to carry out an analysis of the binding energies and charge radii of different nuclei in the local density approximation. The NNLO sat -based EDF produces encouraging results, whereas the AV4' + UIX c -based one is farther from experiment. Possible explanations of these different behaviors are suggested, and the importance of gradient and spin-orbit terms is analyzed. Our paper paves the way for a practical and systematic way to merge ab initio nuclear theory and density functional theory, while shedding light on some critical aspects of this procedure.

Anharmonic multi-phonon nonradiative transition: An ab initio calculation approach

Nonradiative carrier recombinations at deep centers in semiconductors are of great importance for both fundamental physics and device engineering. Here, we provide a revised analysis of Huang’s original nonradiative multi-phonon (NMP) theory with ab initio calculations. First, we confirmed at the first-principles level that Huang’s concise formula gives the same results as the matrix-based formula, and that Huang’s high-temperature formula provides an analytical expression for the coupling constant in Marcus theory. Secondly, we correct for anharmonic effects by taking into account local phonon-mode variations for different charge states of a defect. The corrected capture rates for defects in GaN and SiC agree well with experiments.

Ab Initio Calculations Applied to Problems in Metal Ion Chemistry

Electronic structure calculations can provide accurate spectroscopic data (such as molecular structures) vibrational frequencies, binding energies, etc.) that have been very useful in explaining trends in experimental data and in identifying incorrect experimental measurements. In addition, ab initio calculations. have given considerable insight into the many interactions that make the chemistry of transition metal systems so diverse. In this review we focus on cases where calculations and experiment have been used to solve interesting chemical problems involving metal ions. The examples include cases where theory was used to differentiate between disparate experimental values and cases where theory was used to explain unexpected experimental results.

Ab initio calculation of infrared intensities for hydrogen peroxide

Results of an ab initio SCF quantum mechanical study are used to derive estimates for the infrared intensities of the fundamental vibrations of hydrogen peroxide. Atomic polar tensors (APTs) were calculated on the basis of a 4-31G basis set, and used to derive absolute intensities for the vibrational transitions. Comparison of the APTs calculated for H2O2 with those previously obtained for H2O and CH3OH, and of the absolute intensities derived from the H2O2 APTs with those derived from APTs transferred from H2O and CH3OH, reveals the sets of values to differ by no more than a factor of two, supporting the validity of the theoretical calculation. Values of the infrared intensities obtained correspond to A1 = 14.5 km/mol, A2 = 0.91 km/mol, A3 = 0.058 km/mol, A4 = 123 km/mol, A5 = 46.2 km/mol, and A6 = 101 km/mol. Charge, charge flux and overlap contributions to the dipole moment derivatives are also computed.

High-Precision Spectroscopy of 20 O Benchmarking Ab Initio Calculations in Light Nuclei

The excited states of unstable 20 O were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following the 19 O(d, p) ⁢20 O reaction at 8 A⁢ MeV. By exploiting the Doppler shift attenuation method, the lifetimes of the $2^+_2$ and $3^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the γ-ray branching and E⁢2/M⁢1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the $2^+_2$ and $3^+_1$ states, the B⁡(E⁢2) and B⁡(M⁢1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of γ-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab initio approaches using chiral effective field theory forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. Finally, the reduced transition probabilities were found to be a very constraining test of the performance of the ab initio models.

Ab initio calculations of third-order elastic coefficients

Third-order elasticity (TOE) theory predicts strain-induced changes in second-order elastic coefficients (SOECs) and can model elastic wave propagation in stressed media. Although third-order elastic tensors have been determined based on first principles in previous studies, their current definition is based on an expansion of thermodynamic energy in terms of the Lagrangian strain near the natural, or zero pressure, reference state. This definition is inconvenient for predictions of SOECs under significant initial stresses. Therefore, when TOE theory is necessary to study the strain dependence of elasticity, the seismological community has resorted to an empirical version of the theory. This study reviews the thermodynamic definition of the third-order elastic tensor and proposes using an “effective” third-order elastic tensor. An explicit expression for the effective third-order elastic tensor is given and verified. Additionally, we extend the ab initio approach to calculate third-order elastic tensors under finite pressure and apply it to two cubic systems, namely, NaCl and MgO. As applications and validations, we evaluate (a) strain-induced changes in SOECs and (b) pressure derivatives of SOECs based on ab initio calculations. Good agreement between third-order elasticity-based predictions and numerically calculated values confirms the validity of our theory.

$O(N)$ ab initio calculation scheme for large-scale moiré structures

Here we present a two-step method specifically tailored for band structure calculation of the small-angle moiré-pattern materials which contain tens of thousands of atoms in a unit cell. In the first step, the self-consistent field calculation for the ground state is performed with the O(N) Krylov subspace method implemented in openmx. Second, the crystal momentum-dependent Bloch Hamiltonian and overlap matrix are constructed from the results obtained in the first step and only a small number of eigenvalues near the Fermi energy are solved with shift-invert and Lanczos techniques. By systematically tuning two key parameters, the cutoff radius for electron hopping interaction and the dimension of the Krylov subspace, we obtained the band structures for both rigid and corrugated twisted bilayer graphene structures down to the first magic angle (θ = 1.08°) with high enough accuracy at affordable costs. The band structures are in good agreement with those from tight-binding models, continuum models, plane-wave pseudopotential based ab initio calculations, and experimental observations. This method is also shown to be efficient in twisted double-bilayer graphene and bilayer WSe 2 . We think this two-step method can play a crucial role in other twisted two-dimensional materials, especially those with much more complex band structure and where the effective model is hard to construct.

Electronic states of Zn2 - Ab initio calculations of a prototype for Hg2

The electronic states of Zn2 are investigated by ab initio polarization configuration-interaction calculations. Molecular states dissociating to Zn(1S) + Zn(1S, 3P, 1P) and Zn(3P) + Zn(3P) are treated. Important effects from states arising from Zn(+)(25) + Zn(-)(2P) are found in the potential-energy curves and electronic-transition moments. A model calculation for Hg2 based on the Zn2 curves and including spin-orbit coupling leads to a new interpretation of the emission bands in Hg vapor.

Ab initio calculation of carrier mobility in semiconductors including ionized-impurity scattering

The past decade has seen the emergence of ab initio computational methods for calculating phonon-limited carrier mobilities in semiconductors with predictive accuracy. More realistic calculations ought to take into account additional scattering mechanisms such as, for example, impurity and grain-boundary scattering. Here, in this paper, we investigate the effect of ionized-impurity scattering on the carrier mobility. We model the analytical impurity potential parameterized from first principles by a collection of randomly distributed Coulomb scattering centers, and we include this relaxation channel into the ab initio Boltzmann transport equation, as implemented in the EPW code. We demonstrate this methodology by considering silicon, silicon carbide, and gallium phosphide, for which detailed experimental data are available. Our calculations agree well with experiments over a broad range of temperatures and impurity concentrations. For each compound investigated here, we compare the relative importance of electron-phonon scattering and ionized-impurity scattering, and we critically assess the reliability of Matthiessen's rule. We also show that an accurate description of dielectric screening and carrier effective masses can improve quantitative agreement with experiments.

Ab initio calculation of infrared intensities for the linear isoelectronic series HCN, HNC, CO, HCO/+/, and HOC/+/

Ab initio infrared intensities and dipole moment derivatives expressed in atomic polar tensor form are calculated using the 4-31 and 6-31G(double asterisk) basis sets for the isoelectronic HCN, HNC, CO, HCO(+), and HOC(+) series of molecules. The calculated atomic polar tensors are analyzed in terms of the charge-charge flux-overlap model, which is found to be useful in explaining some of the trends observed in the dipole moment derivatives for this series of molecules. A detailed examination of the dipole moment derivatives for the structural isomers indicates some of the ways in which experimental atomic polar tensors for one isomer should be modified to predict infrared intensities for the other isomer. The absolute intensities calculated for the HCO(+) and HOC(+) ions are believed to be accurate to within a factor of 2 and thus should be useful in astrophysical applications.

Equilibrium and Dynamics Properties of Poly(oxyethylene) Melts and Related Poly(alkylethers) from Simulations and Ab Initio Calculations

Molecular dynamics simulations of POE melts have been performed utilizing a potential force field parameterized to reproduce conformer energies and rotational energy barriers in dimethoxyethane as determined from ab initio electronic structure calculations. Chain conformations and dimensions of POE from the simulations were found to be in good agreement with predictions of a rotational isomeric state (RIS) model based upon the ab initio conformational. energies. The melt chains were found to be somewhat extended relative to chains at theta conditions. This effect will be discussed in light of neutron scattering experiments which indicate that POE chains are extended in the melt relative to theta solutions. The conformational characteristics of POE chains will also be compared with those of other poly (alkylethers), namely poly(oxymethylene), poly(oxytrimethylene) and poly(oxytetramethylene). Local conformational dynamics were found to be more rapid than in polymethylene. Calculated C-H vector correlation times were found to be in reasonable agreement with experimental values from C-13 NMR spin-lattice relaxation times. The influence of ionic salts on local conformations and dynamics will also be discussed.

Revisit the VEC criterion in high entropy alloys (HEAs) with high-throughput ab initio calculations: A case study with Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni system

Valence electron concentration (VEC) was treated as a useful parameter to predict the stability of solid solution phases. However, the available experimental data to support this criterion is far from enough. In the current study, the high-throughput ab initio modeling is applied to investigate the relative stability of FCC and BCC single crystals of the Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni high entropy alloys (HEAs) by using the special quasi-random structure (SQS) approach. Furthermore, the predictions start with pure elements of the Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni system and are continued with binaries, ternaries, and quaternary compositions, which come up with 180 compositions (360 structures). After that, the reliability of the VEC criterion is testified. The results show that the VEC criterion not only works for the stable structure but also works effectively for metastable structure when both FCC and BCC are not thermodynamic stable. However, it is found that the old VEC criterion proposed by Guo et al. fails to work effectively for compositions containing high concentrations of light-weight metals such as Al at VEC<5. To solve this problem, the present work proposes a new VEC rule to define the stability of FCC and BCC structures at the ground state. With the implementation of the new VEC rule, the effectiveness of the VEC rule (EVEC) of both FCC and BCC structures is enhanced, especially for pure elements and binary compositions, indicating that this rule does not only work effectively for multicomponent systems but also works for low-order systems.

Ab initio calculation of atomic solid hydrogen phases based on Gutzwiller many-body wave functions

We apply two ab initio many-body methods based on Gutzwiller wave functions, i.e., correlation matrix renormalization theory (CMRT) and Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization (GCGM), to the study of crystalline phases of atomic hydrogen. Both methods avoid empirical Hubbard U parameters and are free from double-counting issues. CMRT employs a Gutzwiller-type approximation that enables efficient calculations, while GCGM goes beyond this approximation to achieve higher accuracy at higher computational cost. By benchmarking against available quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results, we demonstrate that while both methods are more accurate than the widely used density-functional theory, GCGM systematically captures additional correlation energy missing in CMRT, leading to significantly improved total energy predictions. We also show that by including the correlation energy Ec from local density approximation in the CMRT calculation, CMRT + E c produces energy in better agreement with the QMC results in these hydrogen lattice systems.

Ab initio calculations in atoms, molecules, and solids, treating spin–orbit coupling and electron interaction on an equal footing

We incorporate explicit, non-perturbative treatment of spin–orbit coupling into ab initio auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) calculations. The approach allows a general computational framework for molecular and bulk systems in which material specificity, electron correlation, and spin–orbit coupling effects can be captured accurately and on an equal footing, with favorable computational scaling vs system size. We adopt relativistic effective-core potentials that have been obtained by fitting to fully relativistic data and that have demonstrated a high degree of reliability and transferability in molecular systems. This results in a two-component spin-coupled Hamiltonian, which is then treated by generalizing the ab initio AFQMC approach. We demonstrate the method by computing the electron affinity in Pb, the bond dissociation energy in Br 2 and I 2 , and solid Bi.

Ab Initio Calculation of the Contact Operator Contribution in the Standard Mechanism for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Starting from chiral nuclear interactions, we evaluate the contribution of the leading-order contact transition operator to the nuclear matrix element (NME) of neutrinoless double-beta decay, assuming a light Majorana neutrino-exchange mechanism. The corresponding low-energy constant (LEC) is determined by fitting the transition amplitude of the nn → ppe – e – process to a recently proposed synthetic datum. We examine the dependence of the amplitude on similarity renormalization group (SRG) scale and chiral expansion order of the nuclear interaction, finding that both dependences can be compensated to a large extent by readjusting the LEC. We evaluate the contribution of both the leading-order contact operator and standard long-range operator to the neutrinoless double-beta decays in the light nuclei 6,8 He and the candidate nucleus 48 Ca. Furthermore, our results provide the first clear demonstration that the contact term enhances the NME by 43(7)% in 48 Ca, where the uncertainty is propagated from the synthetic datum.

Ab initio calculation of muon capture on 24 Mg

In this work we study ordinary muon capture (OMC) on 24 Mg from a first-principles perspective. Starting from a particular two- and three-nucleon interaction derived from chiral effective field theory, we use the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) framework to construct effective Hamiltonians and muon-capture operators, which nonperturbatively account for many-body physics outside the valence space. Here, the obtained nuclear matrix elements are compared against those from the phenomenological shell model. The impact of including the correlations from the nuclear shell model (NSM) as well as including the induced twobody part is studied in detail. Furthermore, the effects of realistic bound-muon wave function on the operators is studied. Finally, predictions for capture rates to the lowest excited states in 24 Na are given and compared with available data. It is found that the spectroscopic properties of 24 Mg and its OMC daughter 24 Na are fairly well described by both the NSM and VS-IMSRG, and that the effect of the hadronic two-body currents significantly reduces the OMC rates. Both models have some difficulties in matching the measured OMC rates, especially for the 2 + final states. This calls for further studies in other light nuclei with available OMC data.

Ab initio calculation of a global potential, vibrational energies, and wave functions for HCN/HNC, and a simulation of the (A-tilde)-(X-tilde) emission spectrum

A potential energy surface for the HCN/HNC system which is a fit to extensive, high-quality ab initio, coupled-cluster calculations is presented. All HCN and HNC states with energies below the energy of the first delocalized state are reported and characterized. Vibrational transition energies are compared with all available experimental data on HCN and HNC, including high CH-overtone states up to 23,063/cm. A simulation of the (A-tilde)-(X-tilde) stimulated emission pumping (SEP) spectrum is also reported, and the results are compared to experiment. Franck-Condon factors are reported for odd bending states of HCN, with one quantum of vibrational angular momentum, in order to compare with the recent assignment by Jonas et al. (1992), on the basis of axis-switching arguments of a number of previously unassigned states in the SEP spectrum.
