A Comparative Study on the Effect of Zr, Sn, and Ti on the Crystallization Behavior of Nepheline Glass

In alkali aluminosilicate glasses, additions of 4+ cations like Zr and Ti are often added to promote crystallization. In this study, Zr, Ti, or Sn are progressively substituted for Si in nepheline (NaAlSiO4) glass to determine their impact on the crystallization behavior. For glasses homogeneous on quenching, up to NaAlZr0.075Si0.925O4, NaAlSn0.100Si0.900O4, and NaAlTi0.300Si0.700O4, respectively, crystallization temperatures were investigated by thermal analysis. A subset of compositions was subjected to additional thermal analysis, varying heating rate and particle size, to investigate the subtleties of crystallization behavior. Subsequent heat treatment of glass powders was performed to maximize crystallization, and glass-ceramic microstructure was assessed by optical microscopy and electron microprobe, while crystalline phases were determined by X-ray diffraction. In all cases the major crystalline phase was orthorhombic carnegieite, which accommodated Ti in its structure but not Zr or Sn, and excess 4+ cations formed MO2, i.e., brookite, baddeleyite, and cassiterite, respectively.

XRD and SEM/EDS characterization of two quaternary fuel alloys (U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr and U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr in wt. %) for fast reactors

The current study focuses on characterization of two potential fuel alloys for sodium-cooled fast reactors: U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr (U-MT5Z) and U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr (U-MT7Z) in wt. %. As-cast alloys and annealed (600°C, 500h) alloys are studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) for their bulk structures, and scanning electron microscopy / energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) for their microstructures and phase constituents. For as-cast alloys, the XRD results show that U-MT5Z mainly contains γ, while U-MT7Z alloy contains a. In both alloys, there are three phases indicated by EDS, a U-rich phase, secondary phase, and Zr-rich phase. Further, the elemental compositions varied in different phases and in different alloys. After annealing, both alloys exhibit the structures of α-U and U 2 Ti according to XRD. The EDS results suggest there are five phases found in both alloys.

M IV /Co –I (M = Zr, Hf) Bis(phosphinoamide) Complexes with η 6 - and η 4 -Arenes

Despite their relevance to catalysis, low-/subvalent cobalt complexes are difficult to synthesize and isolate. Consequently, very few “cobaltate” complexes are known and there is a lack of architectural diversity in this field. Lewis acidic d 0 group IV metals have been demonstrated to stabilize Co –I centers via metal–metal bonds. Herein, we report the synthesis of bis(phosphinoamide) heterobimetallic M IV /Co –I arene complexes (M = Zr, Hf). The driving force to maintain the aromaticity of the arenes dictates the hapticity of the Co-bound arene ligands and influences the binding arrangement of the phosphinoamide ligands. Benzene and toluene were observed to bind η 6 to the Co –I center, forcing dissociation of one of the phosphinoamide ligands, whereas η 4 -coordination of anthracene allows both phosphinoamide ligands to remain bound to the Co center. The identity of both the arene and the group IV metal ion starkly influence the lability of the arene. For instance, the Co-bound benzene ligand in the Zr IV /Co –I benzene complex rapidly exchanges with C 6 D 6 in solution, whereas toluene/C 6 D 6 exchange is much slower and appreciable C 6 H 6 /C 6 D 6 exchange is not observed for the Hf analogue. The Zr IV /Co –I benzene complex loses benzene upon repeated exposure to vacuum to form an arene-free tetrametallic dimer.

Microstructural evolution of nanotwinned Al-Zr alloy with significant 9R phase

Aluminum (Al) alloys have a multitude of applications, notably in the automotive, aerospace and coating industries, yet they exhibit significantly lower mechanical strength than conventional steels. Nanotwins drastically improve mechanical strength while retaining ductility. However, the high SFE of Al largely prevents twinning. Here, we synthesize Al-Zr alloy films containing an abundance of incoherent twin boundaries and 9R phases. These alloys exhibit an extended solid solubility of Zr, retaining a columnar nanotwinned structure across all compositions. These films reach a hardness up to 4.2 GPa with 10 at% Zr and demonstrate the capacity for producing strong Al alloys with nanotwins.

[ 89 Zr]Zr-DFO-TOC: a novel radiopharmaceutical for PET imaging of somatostatin receptor positive neuroendocrine tumors

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are clinically diverse types of tumors that can arise anywhere in the body. Previous studies have shown that somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) are overexpressed on NET cell membranes relative to healthy tissue, allowing for tumor targeting through radiolabeled somatostatin analogs (SSAs). This work aims to develop a novel 89 Zr-labeled tracer incorporating the SSA, octreotide (TOC), for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of SSTR + NETs and predictive dosimetry calculations, leveraging the excellent nuclear (t ½ = 3.27 days, β+ = 22.3%, β + avg = 395.5 keV) and chemical characteristics (+ 4 oxidation state, preferential coordination number of 7/8, favorable aqueous chemistry) of 89 Zr. In combination with 89 Zr, the known radiochemistry with the chelator deferoxamine (DFO) gives reason to believe that this radiopharmaceutical incorporating an octreotide conjugate will be successful in studying the suitability of detecting SSTR + NETs.

Rapid Laser Reactive Sintering of Garnet Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 and Li 6.1 La 3 Zr 2 Al 0.3 O 12 and Solid-State Electrolytes

All solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) have gained significant interest in recent years due to their wide range of applications, including mobile devices, electric vehicles, and grid storage. Garnet-type Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) solid-state electrolyte (SSE) continues to be a significant player in the fabrication of ASSLIBs with excellent ionic conductivity on the order of 10 -3 S•cm -1 with the integration of dopants and sintering aids to assist conductivity and structural evolution during the sintering procedure. Traditional sintering techniques, such as solid-state sintering (SSS), have been proven to yield desirable crystal structures. However, the low ionic conductivity results from inferior microstructure, and lithium loss is a significant challenge. Recently, a relatively novel sintering process called rapid laser sintering (RLS) has shown great potential for achieving fully dense solid oxide electrolytes with less lithium loss, resulting in high ionic conductivity [1] [2] [3] [4]. Here, we applied a modified RLS method using precursor powders instead of pre-synthesized LLZO powders to fabricate Al-doped LLZO (Li 6.1 La 3 Zr 2 Al 0.3 O 12 + 13 wt% Li 2 CO 3 ) and Ta-doped LLZO (Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 + 5 wt% LiOH•H 2 O) dense electrolytes. This rapid laser reactive sintering (RLRS) could potentially reduce the number of processing steps and therefore lower the manufacturing cost. We hope the rapid high-temperature sintering can densify the electrolyte and avoid the lithium loss for achieving high lithium-ion conductivity. In this work, we optimized a combination of laser parameters (speed and power), initial precursor composition, and controlled atmospheres to discover the optimal conditions for reaching the efficacious crystal structure, microstructure, and ionic conductivity.

Solid-state phase transitions of two quaternary metallic fuel alloys (U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr and U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr in wt. %)

This study focuses on the solid-state phase transitions of two quaternary fuel alloys for fast reactors: U-1.5Mo-1.5Ti-7.0Zr (U-MT7Z) and U-2.5Mo-2.5Ti-5.0Zr (U-MT5Z). Here, the phase transitions were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). To identify the high temperature phases, the alloys were annealed at 873K, 948K, 1023K, and 1123K (all under 72 hours). Combining those characterizations, the phase transitions are determined. In U-MT7Z, there is one phase transition observed, and it is ascribed to α + U 2 Ti → γ transition. In U-MT5Z, two transitions are found. The first transition is α → γ, while the second is U 2 Ti → γ. The γ phase onset temperature of U-MT5Z is lower than that of U-MT7Z due to the higher Mo content.

Modeling assisted synthesis of Zr-doped Li 3-x In 1-x Zr x Cl 6 with ultrahigh ionic conductivity for lithium-ion batteries

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs) are an important milestone for the future of energy storage because of their capability of impressive energy density and outstanding safety. However, oxide and sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) suffer from either low ionic conductivity or poor chemical stability. In contrast, halide-based SSEs, are promising as candidate materials owing to high conductivity, good stability, and broad cathode compatibility. Though element doping of the SSEs is an effective and common approach to further improve their electrochemical properties, dopant exploration and optimization through solely experimental trials are both costly and time-consuming. For this aspect, computational simulations for dopant element and concentration screening are adopted in this research and zirconium is selected as a suitable dopant for Li 3 InCl 6 . Further, the synthesized Li 2.75 In 0.75 Zr 0.25 Cl 6 exhibited Li ionic conductivity of 5.82 x 10 -3 Scm -1 at room temperature, which is the highest among reported halide SSEs. The ASSLB formed with Li 2 CoO 2 -Li 2.75 In 0.75 Zr 0.25 Cl 6 -Li/In delivers a high initial capacity of 129.3 mAh∙g -1 . Conclusively, this work provides an effective approach which combines computational modeling and experimental verification for the development of halide SSEs with improved stability and conductivity. The successful design approach and compelling results provide further possibilities and capabilities in future SSE research.

Hyperon global polarization in isobar Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200Ge V

The polarization of Λ, $\overline{Λ}$, $Ξ$ – , and $\overline{Ξ}$ + hyperons along the angular momentum of the system has been measured in isobar collisions of Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The polarization dependence on collision centrality exhibits an increasing trend in more peripheral collisions. Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ polarization dependence on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity have been investigated, but no significant dependence was observed. The polarizations of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ are found to be consistent with each other, indicating little contribution of the spin-magnetic coupling to the measured polarization. Comparison to previously measured polarization in Au+Au collisions show no obvious system size dependence. The results are qualitatively consistent with hydrodynamic calculations including contributions from shear-induced polarization and thermal vorticity. For the first time in heavy-ion collisions, the dependence of the global polarization on the hyperon’s emission azimuthal angle relative to the second-order event plane has been measured, indicating stronger polarization for the in-plane emitted hyperons at the level of 2.4 σ significance in 20–50 % centrality. The $Ξ$ hyperon polarization measurements via polarization transfer analysis yield finite positive values with 2.9 σ significance in 20–50 % centrality, slightly larger compared to the inclusive Λ polarization.

La 2 Zr 2 O 7 Nanoparticle-Mediated Synthesis of Porous Al-Doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 Garnet

In this work, we modified the reaction pathway to quickly (minutes) incorporate lithium and stabilize the ionic conducting garnet phase by decoupling the formation of a La–Zr–O network from the addition of lithium. To do this, we synthesized La 2 Zr 2 O 7 (LZO) nanoparticles to which LiNO 3 was added. This method is a departure from typical solid-state synthesis methods that require high-energy milling to promote mixing and intimate particle–particle contact and from sol–gel syntheses as a unique porous microstructure is obtained. We show that the reaction time is limited by the rate of nitrate decomposition and that this method produces a porous high-Li-ion-conducting cubic phase, within an hour, that may be used as a starting structure for a composite electrolyte.

Computational exploration of biomedical HfNbTaTiZr and Hf 0.5 Nb 0.5 Ta 0.5 Ti 1.5 Zr refractory high-entropy alloys

Refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) have been proven to be a potential candidate in the biomedical field due to their balanced mechanical properties and biocompatible composition. Recent experimental findings show that RHEAs like HfNbTaTiZr and Hf 0.5 Nb 0.5 Ta 0.5 Ti 1.5 Zr have good mechanical properties such as high polarization and wear resistance than others which establish them as potential materials for biomedical application. In this work, we performed first-principles density functional theory calculations on the mechanical and thermal properties of HfNbTaTiZr and Hf 0.5 Nb 0.5 Ta 0.5 Ti 1.5 Zr. The predicted lattice constant, density, Young's modulus, and Vickers hardness are consistent with the available experimental report, which verifies the accuracy of the applied model. The thermal coefficient of linear expansion of both RHEAs has been investigated by utilizing the Debye theory. The present methods could be applied to study other future RHEAs on exploration of their physical properties.

Measurement of the longitudinal flow-plane decorrelation using multiplane cumulants in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au, Ru+Ru, and Zr+Zr collisions

Measurements of the variation of anisotropic flow-plane angles (𝛹 𝑛 ) with rapidity, commonly known as the flow-plane decorrelation, provide important insights into the initial conditions of the matter produced in heavy-ion collisions. Here, in this paper, using data collected by the STAR experiment, we report the first measurement of the four-plane correlator observable 𝑇 𝑛 ⁡{𝑏⁢𝑎;𝑑⁢𝑐}=⟨⟨sin⁡[𝑛⁢(𝛹$^𝑏_𝑛$ − 𝛹$^𝑎_𝑛$)]⁢sin⁡[𝑛⁢(𝛹$^𝑑_𝑛$ − 𝛹$^𝑐_𝑛$)]⟩⟩, where superscripts 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, and 𝑑 denote sequential pseudorapidity (𝜂) regions with 𝑎 corresponding to the most backward region, 𝑏 and 𝑐 close to mid-rapidity with 𝜂 𝑏 < 0 and 𝜂 𝑐 > 0, and 𝑑 being the most forward. The measurement is performed for the elliptic and triangular flow (i.e.~𝑛 = 2 and 3) in Au+Au and isobar (Ru+Ru, Zr+Zr) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200~GeV. The goal of calculating the correlation of the flow-plane angle variations from backward to mid-central, and from mid-central to forward regions, is to probe the systematic variation of flow angle over a wide 𝜂 range. In mid-central collisions (10−30% centrality), we find 𝑇 2 ⁡{𝑏⁢𝑎;𝑑⁢𝑐} =−0.004 ±0.001⁢(s⁢t⁢a⁢t) ±0.002⁢(s⁢y⁢s⁢t) independent of the collision system. Such a small value of 𝑇 2 favors a random-walk'' variation of the flow-plane angles, where the rapidity correlation length is smaller than the entire region under study. These measurements provide new information on the decorrelation patterns in the system and offer a quantitative estimate of possible systematic variations in anisotropic flow angles such astwist’’ between forward and backward regions. This opens new opportunities for understanding the three-dimensional structure and the time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions.

Evaluating the effects of structural disorder on the magnetic properties of Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7

Motivated by the variation in reported lattice parameters of floating-zone-grown Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 crystals, we have performed a detailed study of the relationship between synthesis environment, structural disorder, and magnetic properties. Using a combination of polycrystalline standards, electron-probe microanalysis, and scattering techniques, we show that crystals grown under atmospheric conditions have a reduced lattice parameter relative to pristine polycrystalline powders due to occupation of the Nd site by excess Zr (i.e., negative stuffing). In contrast, crystals grown under high-pressure Ar are nearly stoichiometric with an average lattice parameter approaching the polycrystalline value. While minimal disorder of the oxygen sublattices is observed on the scale of the average structure, neutron pair-distribution function analysis indicates a highly local disorder of the oxygen coordination, which is only weakly dependent on growth environment. Most importantly, our magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron scattering data show that the magnetic properties of crystals grown under high-pressure Ar match closely with those of stoichiometric powders. Neutron scattering measurements reveal that the signature of magnetic moment fragmentation—the coexistence of all-in-all-out (AIAO) magnetic Bragg peaks and diffuse pinch-point scattering due to spin-ice correlations–persists in these nearly stoichiometric crystals. However, in addition to an increased AIAO transition temperature, the diffuse signal is seemingly stabilized and remains nearly unchanged upon warming to 800 mK. This behavior indicates that both the AIAO magnetic order and spin-ice correlations are sensitive to deviations of the Nd stoichiometry.

Photocatalytic Biocidal Coatings Featuring Zr 6 Ti 4 -Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

The world is currently suffering socially, economically, and politically from the recent pandemic outbreak due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), and those in hospitals, schools, and elderly nursing homes face enhanced threats. Healthcare textiles, such as masks and medical staff gowns, are susceptible to contamination of various pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. Here, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can potentially address these challenges due to their tunable reactivity and ability to be incorporated as porous coatings on textile materials. Here, we report how incorporating titanium into the zirconium-pyrene-based MOF NU-1000, denoted as NU-1012, generates a highly reactive biocidal photocatalyst. This MOF features a rare ligand migration phenomenon, and both the Ti/Zr center and the pyrene linker act synergistically as dual active centers and widen the absorption band for this material that results in enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation upon visible light irradiation. Additionally, we found the ligand migration process is generally applicable to other csq topology Zr-MOFs. Importantly, NU-1012 can be easily incorporated onto cotton textile cloths as a coating, and the resulting composite material demonstrates fast and potent biocidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), Gram-positive bacteria (S. epidermidis), and T7 bacteriophage virus with up to a 7-log (99.99999%) reduction within one hour under simulated daylight.

Temperature dependence of field-response mechanisms in 0.4Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 –0.6(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3

Understanding the temperature dependence of how ferroelectric materials respond to electric fields is critical for determining how best to use these materials in applications. In this study, temperature dependent in situ x-ray diffraction is used to study how field-response mechanism Ba ( Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 ) O 3 – x ( Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 ) TiO 3 evolves with temperature. Increasing the measurement temperature was found to slightly reduce the extent of domain reversal and the magnitude of the 111 lattice strain. Instead, these results indicate that temperature predominantly impacted the angular dependence of the 002/200 lattice strain. We attribute the observed differences in 002/200 lattice strain to the flattening of the free-energy near the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary, where the flattening of the energy landscape promotes a polarization rotation response during the application of electric fields at room temperature.
