A Field Quality Modeling in Canted Cosine Theta Dipole Magnets Wound Using REBCO Cables

In accelerator magnets the magnetic field quality is an important parameter. Using REBCO tapes or cables in magnet windings affects the magnetic field quality because of a quite high magnetization generated by these conductors. In this paper we analyzed numerically (using FEM) an effect of various REBCO cables’ magnetization on the field quality of canted cosine theta (CCT) dipole magnets. The magnetic properties of the cables were taken from our measurements of their M (H) curves at 4.2 K and magnetic fields up to 12 T. Also, flux creep effects were measured and their effects on field quality analyzed. Here we present a modeling of a CCT magnet containing 1 dipole double layer wound using a CORC and STAR cable. To make the FEM modeling less computationally “expensive”, we modelled only a section of 10 turns of the magnet's central part and calculated b3 fields on a circle of 2/3 of the innermost layer center line. Special M (H) curves measured during various field cycles (the so called “pre-injection cycles”) are effective in decreasing b 3 fields of the magnets. Flux creep effects suppress the b 3 fields further. In conclusion, using these techniques b 3 fields less than 10 units can be achieved.

Current and Future Work on Wound Contamination by Alpha Emitters at Los Alamos [Slides]

Our team calculated ‘clinical decision levels’ at which treatment may be warranted (i.e., bioassay and wound measurements which correspond to specific dose thresholds). The actual risk to the patient corresponding to this dose threshold is uncertain – the CED may not tell the whole story. We recently reviewed LANL medical records to characterize adverse events associated with treatment. Future work should include medical records from other institutions and a review and analysis of data to quantify benefit of treatment with a focus on the question, "What factors predict whether treatment will be beneficial?"

Wound-Field Synchronous Machine-System Integration toward 8X Power Density and Commercialization

In support of VTO's Electric Drive R&D activity, the Electric Drive Technologies (EDT) Consortium, a multi-disciplinary team of national labs and universities, coordinates and conducts a portfolio of research to advance the state-of-the-art in electric drive technologies. The Consortium established the following strategic goal listed below: (EDT Research Consortium Strategic Goal (compared to 2015 baseline)) A 125K electric traction drive system: (1) 8X power density improvement, or 1/10 the volume (33 kW/L), (2) 1/2 the cost ($\$$3.3/kW), (3) 2X useful life (300,000 miles), and (4) 100 kW/L inverter and a <20,000 rpm, 50kW/L electric motor The objective of this project is to design a Wound Field Synchronous Machine with 8X power density improvement and cost below $\$$3.3/kW.

Brushless Excitation for Wound-field Synchronous Machines using Multi-harmonic Windings

Wound-field synchronous machines (WFSM) are promising alternatives to electric machines with permanent magnets (PM). The ability to control the rotor field in these machines makes them well-suited to safety critical applications, while the absence of rare-earth permanent magnets makes these machines sustainable. The WFSM rotor excitation schemes have traditionally used carbon brushes, which significantly reduces the reliability of these machines, limiting their widespread adoption. To overcome this limitation and improve the reliability of WFSMs, several brushless rotor excitation schemes have been developed. However, most of these systems require additional windings or dedicated power electronics, making them expensive and limiting achievable power-density. In this paper a new brushless excitation scheme is proposed. In this scheme, a multiphase, multi-harmonic stator winding is designed. This winding can independently control two spatial harmonics in the airgap of the machine; the first to create torque and the second to wirelessly transfer power to the rotor to excite it.

Magnetic, Mechanical and Thermal Modeling of Superconducting, Whole-Body, Actively Shielded, 3 T MRI Magnets Wound Using MgB 2 Strands for Liquid Cryogen Free Operation

Here we present magnetic, mechanical and thermal modeling results for a 3 Tesla actively shielded whole body MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) magnet consisting of coils with a square cross section of their windings. The magnet design was a segmented coil type optimized to minimize conductor length while hitting the standard field quality and DSV (Diameter of Spherical Volume) specifications as well as a standard, compact size 3 T system. It had an overall magnet length and conductor length which can lead to conduction cooled designs comparable to NbTi helium bath cooled 3 T MRI magnets. The design had a magnetic field homogeneity better than 10 ppm (part-per-million) within a DSV (Diameter of Spherical Volume) of 48 cm and the total magnet winding length of 1.37 m. A new class of MgB 2 strand especially designed for MRI applications was considered as a possible candidate for winding such magnets. This work represents the first magnetic, mechanical and thermal design for a whole-body 3 T MgB 2 short (1.37 m length) MRI magnet based on the performance parameters of existing MgB 2 wire. 3 Tesla MRI magnet can operate at 20 K at 67% of its critical current.

Fixed gap capacitive power transfer coupling for wound field synchronous machines

An electrical rotating machine, such as a generator or motor, communicates power from a stationary location to the rotating rotor of the rotating machine via opposed pairs of capacitor plates, one plate of each pair rotating with the rotor and one plate of each pair fixed not to rotate. Larger plate gaps suitable for mechanically rigid plates are possible through high-voltage and high-frequency AC signals managed by using a dielectric support design for the capacitor plates minimizing dielectric loss and/or impedance matching on the rotor.
