CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-SIM-VIRS_Edition2-VIRSonly)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product. The following CERES SSF data sets are currently available: CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition1 CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1 CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A CER_SSF_TRMM-SIM-VIRS_Edition2_VIRSonly CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A-TransOps CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2B-TransOps CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition1A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition1A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2A CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2A CER_SSF_Terra-FM1-MODIS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2B CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Beta1 CER_SSF_Aqua-FM3-MODIS_Beta2 CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Beta2. CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Edition1B)

HD 50896 and the composition of Wolf-Rayet atmospheres

Measurements of the Pickering lines of He II in the spectrum of HD 50896 suggest that the upper limit to the H/He ratio is 0.05 by numbers. Spectral scans from OAO-2 show strong lines, nitrogen being observed most strongly as N IV, but also as N III and N V. Carbon and oxygen are observed dominantly in the triply ionized states. Thus, the degree of ionization of C, N and O are comparable. No indication of extensive selective excitation effects is observed. It is concluded that the differences between the WN and WC stars cannot be explained by selective excitation or ionization effects in the WN stars.

Mass-loss rates from early-type stars

The mass loss rates are derived for a number of unevolved O-type stars and a few WN stars from high dispersion IUE spectra of their P Cygni profiles. When combined with other published mass loss rates, it is found that the relationship between log m and M sub BOL is a broad band rather than a linear relation, suggesting that the line radiation driven wind theory may not be sufficient to explain mass loss. The mass loss rates for the WN stars, while more uncertain, confirm that these stars lose mass about 100 times faster than O-stars.

A recent time of minimum for and atmospheric-eclipse in the ultraviolet spectrum of the Wolf-Rayet eclipsing binary V444 Cygni

The 1200-1900 angstrom region and fine error sensor observations in the optical for V444 Cyg were continuously observed. More than half of a primary minimum and almost a complete secondary minimum were observed. It is found that the time of minimum for the secondary eclipse is consistent with that for primary eclipse, and the ultraviolet times of minimum are consistent with the optical ones. The spectrum shows a considerable amount of phase dependence. The general shaps and depths of the light curves for the FES signal and the 1565-1900 angstrom continuum are similar to those for the blue continuum. The FES, however, detected an atmospheric eclipse in line absorption at about the phase the NIV absorption was strongest. It is suggested that there is a source of continuum absorption shortward of 1460 angstrom which exists throughout a large part of the extended atmosphere and which, by implication, must redden considerably the ultraviolet continuua of WN stars. A fairly high degree of ionization for the inner part of the WN star a atmosphere is implied.
