Development of solution techniques for nonlinear structural analysis

Nonlinear structural solution methods in the current research literature are classified according to order of the solution scheme, and it is shown that the analytical tools for these methods are uniformly derivable by perturbation techniques. A new perturbation formulation is developed for treating an arbitrary nonlinear material, in terms of a finite-difference generated stress-strain expansion. Nonlinear geometric effects are included in an explicit manner by appropriate definition of an applicable strain tensor. A new finite-element pilot computer program PANES (Program for Analysis of Nonlinear Equilibrium and Stability) is presented for treatment of problems involving material and geometric nonlinearities, as well as certain forms on nonconservative loading.

INPUTB: A thermal/structural data interface program for 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional interpolation

A computer program (INPUTB) for interpolation in both space and time, and based on a linear interpolation scheme using simplex spatial regions is described. The program was developed to provide data interfacing between the output from thermal analyzers and the input to the BOPACE 3-D program. The INPUTB interpolator is of a general nature and could be used for other tasks. The INPUTB program utilizes temperature values which are given at some sequence of time for a list of strategically located thermal nodes. It operates on these values by performing a double interpolation to provide temperature values at another desired sequence of times for a list of structural nodes.

The Boeing plastic analysis capability for engines

The current BOPACE program is described as a nonlinear stress analysis program, which is based on a family of isoparametric finite elements. The theoretical, user, programmer, preprocessing aspects are discussed, and example problems are included. New features in the current program version include substructuring, an out-of-core Gauss wavefront equation solver, multipoint constraints, combined material and geometric nonlinearities, automatic calculation of inertia effects, provision for distributed as well as concentrated mechanical loads, follower forces, singular crack-tip elements, the SAIL automatic generation capability, and expanded user control over input quantity definition, output selection, and program execution. BOPACE is written in FORTRAN 4 and is currently available for both the IBM 360/370 and the UNIVAC 1108 machines.

Integrated analysis capability for large space systems

The development of an integrated analysis computer program capable of performing the conceptual/preliminary structural system design analysis of large space systems is addressed. The integrated analysis capability (IAC) specifications include thermal/structural/controls integration, an emphasis on existing software and interactive graphics and I/O, a project size capability of 1 to 50 users (1 to 5 users concurrent), and the use of the FORTRAN '77 language. The advantages of the DISCOS and NASTRAN computer programs to the IAC are outlined and recommendations for other programs are made. Barriers to the development of the system arising from the interdisciplinary data flow are defined.

Integrated Analysis Capability pilot computer program

An integrated analysis capability (IAC) computer software package was developed for the design analysis and performance evaluation of large space systems. The IAC aids the user in coupling the required technical disciplines (initially structures, thermal and controls), providing analysis solution paths which reveal critical interactive effects in order to study loads, stability and mission performance. Existing technical software modules, having a wide existing user community, are combined with the interface software to bridge between the different technologies and mathematical modeling techniques. The package is supported by executive, data management and interactive graphics software, with primary development within the superminicomputer environment.

Development and evaluation of two non-linear shell elements

Two plate and shell displacement elements are developed for use in large deflection non-linear analysis. The elements are of the 'stability' type, in which non-linear strains are included, with their values optimized by added higher order membrane functions and special types of elemental level constraints. The paper summarizes formulation and computational procedures, and discusses numerical results in detail. Conclusions are given regarding the effectiveness of the elements for solving both linear and non-linear shell analysis problems.

IAC level "O" program development

The current status of the IAC development activity is summarized. The listed prototype software and documentation was delivered, and details were planned for development of the level 1 operational system. The planned end product IAC is required to support LSST design analysis and performance evaluation, with emphasis on the coupling of required technical disciplines. The long term IAC effectively provides two distinct features: a specific set of analysis modules (thermal, structural, controls, antenna radiation performance and instrument optical performance) that will function together with the IAC supporting software in an integrated and user friendly manner; and a general framework whereby new analysis modules can readily be incorporated into IAC or be allowed to communicate with it.

Development and use of an integrated analysis capability

The paper describes a multi-discipline integrated analysis capability, designed to aid the engineering community in coupling of existing modules and in handling of the associated software and data. This capability consists of an executive program which manages tasks and data, a number of technical modules, graphics and special purpose modules, inter-module data flow interfaces, and associated user documentation. The current implementation provides specific modules and coupled solution paths for the thermal, structures and controls technologies. However, the system has been designed to serve also as a framework into which user groups may incorporate other modules and technologies. Details of the system architecture are discussed, in the context of the major design decisions and the software development and usage experience. The paper provides a brief discussion of some other integrated systems which are available or under development.

Methodology for analysis and simulation of large multidisciplinary problems

The Integrated Structural Modeling (ISM) program is being developed for the Air Force Weapons Laboratory and will be available for Air Force work. Its goal is to provide a design, analysis, and simulation tool intended primarily for directed energy weapons (DEW), kinetic energy weapons (KEW), and surveillance applications. The code is designed to run on DEC (VMS and UNIX), IRIS, Alliant, and Cray hosts. Several technical disciplines are included in ISM, namely structures, controls, optics, thermal, and dynamics. Four topics from the broad ISM goal are discussed. The first is project configuration management and includes two major areas: the software and database arrangement and the system model control. The second is interdisciplinary data transfer and refers to exchange of data between various disciplines such as structures and thermal. Third is a discussion of the integration of component models into one system model, i.e., multiple discipline model synthesis. Last is a presentation of work on a distributed processing computing environment.

A high-pressure van der Waals compound in solid nitrogen-helium mixtures

A detailed diamond anvil-cell study using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical microscopy has been conducted for the He-N system, with a view to the weakly-bound van der Waals molecule interactions that can be formed in the gas phase. High pressure is found to stabilize the formation of a stoichiometric, solid van der Waals compound of He(N2)11 composition which may exemplify a novel class of compounds found at high pressures in the interiors of the outer planets and their satellites.
