Polishing the Gold Standard: The Role of Orbital Choice in CCSD(T) Vibrational Frequency Prediction

While CCSD(T) with spin-restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) orbitals has long been lauded for its ability to accurately describe closed-shell interactions, the performance of CCSD(T) on open-shell species is much more erratic, especially when using a spin-unrestricted HF (UHF) reference. Previous studies have shown improved treatment of open-shell systems when a non-HF set of molecular orbitals, like Brueckner or Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) orbitals, is used as a reference. Inspired by the success of regularized orbital-optimized second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (κ-OOMP2) orbitals as reference orbitals for MP3, we investigate the use of κ-OOMP2 orbitals and various DFT orbitals as reference orbitals for CCSD(T) calculations of the corrected ground-state harmonic vibrational frequencies of a set of 36 closed-shell (29 neutrals, 6 cations, 1 anion) and 59 open-shell diatomic species (38 neutrals, 15 cations, 6 anions). The aug-cc-pwCVTZ basis set is used for all calculations. The use of κ-OOMP2 orbitals in this context alleviates difficult cases observed for both UHF orbitals and OOMP2 orbitals. Removing two multireference systems and 12 systems with ambiguous experimental data leaves a pruned data set. Overall performance on the pruned data set highlights CCSD(T) with a B97 orbital reference (CCSD(T):B97), CCSD(T) with a κ-OOMP2 orbital reference (CCSD(T):κ-OOMP2), and CCSD(T) with a B97M-rV orbital reference (CCSD(T):B97M-rV) with RMSDs of 8.48 cm -1 , and 8.50 cm -1 , and 8.75 cm -1 respectively, outperforming CCSD(T):UHF by nearly a factor of 5. Moreover, the performance on the closed- and open-shell subsets shows these methods are able to treat open-shell and closed-shell systems with comparable accuracy and robustness. CCSD(T) with RHF orbitals is seen to improve upon UHF for the closed-shell species, while spatial symmetry breaking in a number of restricted open-shell HF (ROHF) references leads CCSD(T) with ROHF reference orbitals to exhibit the poorest statistical performance of all methods surveyed for open-shell species. The use of κ-OOMP2 orbitals has also proven useful in diagnosing multireference character that can hinder the reliability of CCSD(T).

Cr2 Revisited

Abstract Cr2 is studied at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory, including a perturbational estimate of the connected triples [CCSD(T)]. Both spin restricted, RCCSD(T), and spin unrestricted, UCCSD(T), approaches are used. The UCCSD(T) bond length is much longer than the experimental value, while the RCCSD(T) bond length is shorter. This difference is due to the inability of the spin restricted Hartree-Fock reference to describe the antiferromagnetic coupling at larger r values. In contrast with the results obtained using density functional theory in conjunction with older functionals, the results obtained with recently developed functionals are in agreement with the UCCSD(T) results.

An auxiliary-Field quantum Monte Carlo perspective on the ground state of the dense uniform electron gas: An investigation with Hartree-Fock trial wavefunctions

We analyze the utility of Hartree-Fock (HF) trial wavefunctions in performing phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) on the uniform electron gas (UEG) model. The combination of ph-AFQMC with spin-restricted HF (RHF+ph-AFQMC) was found to be highly accurate and efficient for systems containing up to 114 electrons in 2109 orbitals, particularly for rs ≤ 2.0. Compared to spin-restricted coupled-cluster (RCC) methods, we discover that RHF+ph-AFQMC performs better than CC with singles, doubles, and triples (RCCSDT) and similarly to or slightly worse than CC with singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples (RCCSDTQ) for r s ≤ 3.0 in the 14-electron UEG model. With the 54-electron, we found RHF+ph-AFQMC to be nearly exact for r s ≤ 2.0 and pointed out potential biases in existing benchmarks. Encouraged by these results, we performed RHF+ph-AFQMC on the 114-electron UEG model for rs ≤ 2.0 and provided new benchmark data for future method development. We found that the UEG models with r s = 5.0 remain to be challenging for RHF+ph-AFQMC. Employing nonorthogonal configuration expansions or unrestricted HF states as trial wavefunctions was also found to be ineffective in the case of the 14-electron UEG model with r s = 5.0. We emphasize the need for a better trial wavefunction for ph-AFQMC in simulating strongly correlated systems. With the 54-electron and 114-electron UEG models, we stress the potential utility of RHF+ph-AFQMC for simulating dense solids.
