Ex situ calibration of the scattered-light time-history diagnostic on the National Ignition Facility

The scattered-light time-history diagnostic (SLTD) suite measures time-resolved scattered light in three wavelength bands: stimulated Brillouin scattering (350–352 nm), stimulated Raman scattering (430–760 nm), and plasma emission at half the laser frequency (695–735 nm), at 15 locations around the National Ignition Facility (NIF) target chamber. The SLTD, along with the full-aperture backscatter station (FABS), collects scattered light from direct- and indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion experiments. The SLTD calibration was revisited after a discrepancy between FABS and SLTD measurements was observed on NIF polar direct-drive experiments. An integrated calibration of the SLTD was performed for the first time, and individual components were also calibrated for the wavelengths of 351, 527, and 532 nm. The optical transmission of the instrument was measured to be (1.12 ± 0.04) × 10 –7 and (1.96 ± 0.11) × 10 –7 for the wavelengths of 351 and 532 nm, respectively. The revised calibration at 351 nm brings the SLTD measured scattered energy in agreement with the FABS measured scattered energy after additionally accounting for the degradation of an optical element in FABS. Furthermore, this decreased the inferred absorption by 7% for a representative experiment. However, discrepancies remain between FABS and SLTD measurements in the SRS band (532 nm).

Shock tube and laser absorption study of CO time-histories during combustion of branched alkenes

Combustion experiments of the three isomers of methyl butene compound - 2-methyl-1-butene (2M1B), 2-methyl-2-butene (2M2B), and 3-methyl-1-butene (3M1B), have been carried out in a shock tube using laser absorption technique. Carbon monoxide (CO) time-histories are obtained behind reflected shockwaves over the temperature range of 1350–1630 K near 9.3 atm with stoichiometric mixtures of 0.075% fuel in O2/Ar. Comparative study of CO time-histories reveals different rates of CO formation indicating different ignition delay time of the methyl butene isomers.

Locations and time histories of five 1979 gamma-ray bursts

The locations and time histories of five gamma-ray bursts that occurred between 1979 March 7 and March 31 were studied. The error box for GB 790325 has a typical dimension of about 1.5 arcmin. The other localizations, while not precise enough for thorough optical examination, contribute to distribution studies and allow radio and X-ray observations, catalog searches, and other archival work. A search through selected catalogs did reveal one object, the star FY Aql (cataloged as a Mira-type variable but probably a dwarf nova) inside one of the gamma-ray burst boxes. Given the parameters of this particular search, the probability of at least one chance association is 0.03. Both recent and archival optical examinations of some of the error boxes were carried out, and no indications of any actual physical associations were seen. One event, GB 790331, had an interesting spectral behavior, in that the leading edges of the two main peaks within the burst had harder spectra than the remainder of the event.

Development and application of a time-history analysis for rotorcraft dynamics based on a component approach

A time history analysis for rotorcraft dynamics based on dynamical substructures, and nonstructural mathematical and aerodynamic components is described. The analysis is applied to predict helicopter ground resonance and response to rotor damage. Other applications illustrate the stability and steady vibratory response of stopped and gimballed rotors, representative of new technology. Desirable attributes expected from modern codes are realized, although the analysis does not employ a complete set of techniques identified for advanced software. The analysis is able to handle a comprehensive set of steady state and stability problems with a small library of components.

The Scattered Light Time-history Diagnostic suite at the National Ignition Facility

The Scattered Light Time-history Diagnostic (SLTD) is being implemented at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to greatly expand the angular coverage of absolute scattered-light measurements for direct- and indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. The SLTD array will ultimately consist of 15 units mounted at a variety of polar and azimuthal angles on the NIF target chamber, complementing the existing NIF backscatter suite. Each SLTD unit collects and diffuses scattered light onto a set of three optical fibers, which transport the light to filtered photodiodes to measure scattered light in different wavelength bands: stimulated Brillouin scattering (350 nm–352 nm), stimulated Raman scattering (430 nm–760 nm), and ω/2 (695 nm–745 nm). SLTD measures scattered light with a time resolution of ~1 ns and a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 500. Currently, six units are operational and recording data. Measurements of the angular dependence of scattered light will strongly constrain models of laser energy coupling in ICF experiments and allow for a more robust inference of the total laser energy coupled to implosions.

Localization, time histories, and energy spectra of a new type of recurrent high-energy transient source

The detection of a recurrent high-energy transient source which is neither a classical X-ray nor a gamma-ray burster, but whose properties are intermediate between the two, is reported. The energy spectra of 12 recurrent events are found to be soft, characterized by kT's of 34-56 keV. The time histories are short with rise and fall times as fast as about 10 ms. The source location is a 0.12 sq deg region about 10 deg from the Galactic center.

Time histories of horizontal-tail loads, elevator loads, and deformations on a jet-powered bomber airplane during abrupt pitching maneuvers at approximately 20,000 feet

Time histories are presented of horizontal-tail loads, elevator loads, and deformations on a jet-powered bomber during abrupt pitching maneuvers at a pressure altitude of approximately 20,000 feet. The normal and pitching accelerations measured varied from -0.90b to 3.41g and from -0.73 to 0.80 radian per second per second (sic), respectively, with a Mach number variation of from 0.40 to o.75. The maximum horizontal-tail load measured was 17,250 pounds down. The maximum elevator load was 1900 pounds up. The stabilizer twisted a maximum of 0.76 degrees leading edge down at the tip. The greatest fuselage deflection at the tail was about 1.7 inches down.

Pressure-time history of pylon wake signature on a pusher propeller in flight

Miniature, high-frequency, pressure transducers were mounted on a pusher propeller at 3/4 and 90-percent radii. Time-history of fluctuating surface pressure over 700 revolutions and 26 flight conditions reveal intriguing phenomena. The anticipated pylon wake signature manifests itself as a negative pressure pulse over extended portions of the suction surface. The phenomenon further develops into a primarily random turbulence signature at 80-percent chord and interestingly may reevolve as a coherent wake signature further downstream. A new type of periodic disturbance of long time-scale, compared to propeller period-of-revolution, is discovered at positions beyond 0.6 chord on the suction surface in the transonic regime.

Time history solution program, L225 (TEV126). Volume 1: Engineering and usage

Volume 1 of a two volume document is presented. The usage of the convolution program L225 (TEV 126) is described. The program calculates the time response of a linear system by convoluting the impulsive response function with the time-dependent excitation function. The convolution is performed as a multiplication in the frequency domain. Fast Fourier transform techniques are used to transform the product back into the time domain to obtain response time histories. A brief description of the analysis used is presented.

Time-History Data of Maneuvers Performed by a Republic F84G Airplane During Squadron Operational Training

Preliminary results of one phase of a control-motion study program involving several jet fighter-type airplanes are presented in time-history form and are summarized as maximum measured quantities plotted against indicated airspeed. The results pertain to approximately 1,000 maneuvers performed by a Republic F-84G jet-fighter airplane during squadron operational training. The data include most tactical maneuvers of which the F-84G airplane is capable. Maneuvers were performed at pressure altitudes of 0 to 30,000 feet with indicated airspeeds ranging from the stalling speed to approximately 515 knots.
