A Novel Three Phase Oak Ridge DC / AC Converter for Wireless Grid Tied Applications

In this study, a novel three phase oak ridge dc to ac converter is introduced for wireless mobility energy storage (WMES) applications to support the grid demand during peak times. The proposed topology can be used in a bi-directional operation between ac grid and dc terminals of energy storage by accomplishing unity power factor. Inherent merit of the technology can directly merge dc input to the high frequency and 60 Hz grid frequency by superimposing through the wireless coils. Theoretical and simulation results are validated by the simulation analysis for 20 kW output power. The functionality of the proposed three phase system is established by using 6 inches air gap between the couplers with the input of 675 V DC and output of 277 V AC, RMS . The system overall design analysis is demonstrated for simulation analysis and simulation results are presented achieving 3% current total harmonic distortion (THD) and 0.99 power factor (PF) at full load 20 kW wireless power transfer.

DSP Implementation of a Novel Recurrent Neural Network Controller into a TI Solar Microinverter

Single-phase grid-tied inverters are widely used to integrate small-scale renewable energy sources and distributed generations to the utility grid. A novel Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) current controller is introduced to solve the resonant problem associated with LCL based inverters. The well-trained RNN controller was validated through a Texas Instruments (TI) LCL filter based solar microinverter kit that contains a C2000 TI microcontroller. The inverter closed current loop test without the grid connection was conducted in a laboratory setup to verify the RNN contoller functionality. The laboratory waveform results verified that the RNN current controller produced the strong tracking of the measured inverter AC current to its reference value even at a low sampling frequency of 5KHz. The proposed RNN current controller also proved to perform better than the built-in three-pole-three-zero (3P3Z) current controller provided by TI and produce lower values of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).

Harmonics and Stability Evaluation of Converter-Interfaced Combined Heat and Power Units

Grid integration of medium-sized combined heat and power (CHP) units is challenging due to strict grid codes and conventional generators lack of control flexibility to meet these grid codes. Adding a two-stage ac-dc-ac power electronics interface between the generator and the utility grid will accelerate the interconnection process of CHP units. For the dc-ac stage, a voltage source converter (VSC) has been widely used as a grid-tied inverter because of its fast control and low total harmonics distortion (THD). In this paper, several topologies of generator-side rectifiers for ac-dc power conversion are explored and analyzed. The harmonics impact of various rectifiers on the CHP generator are evaluated. The overall cost of the electrical system, when using various types of rectifiers, is assessed and the VSC back-to-back converter interface configuration is found to be optimal. The overall system stability is also examined using small-signal impedance analysis to assess potential instability issues at the system level.

A Virtual Space Vector Model Predictive Control for a Seven-Level Hybrid Multilevel Converter

This paper proposes a virtual space vector (VSV) model predictive control (MPC) for a three-phase seven-level (7L) hybrid multilevel converter (HMC), where each phase consists of an active-neutral-point-clamped converter with a floating H-bridge. To achieve the best current tracking, which is the primary goal of the proposed algorithm, a novel geometrical positioning approach is proposed to select the optimal voltage vector among all the realspace vectors and VSVs. Then, all the possible switching sequences that belong to the optimal voltage vector are evaluated to realize the dc capacitor voltage balancing and common-mode voltage reduction. Through an external modulator, the optimal voltage vector can be synthesized by using either one-, three-, or seven-segment switching sequence. Compared with the conventional MPC, the proposed VSV-MPC can reduce not only the computational burden but also the current THD. Both simulation and experimental results obtained on silicon carbide based 7L-HMC prototype are presented to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed VSVMPC strategy.

High-Power Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) for Extreme Fast Charging Applications

This project report presents a novel power converter system called Oak Ridge Converter (ORC), a patented technology developed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for XFC wireless EV charging systems. ORC integrates the grid interface converter (also known as the active front-end rectifier with power factor correction) with the high-frequency inverter stage, promoting size and cost-effective charging technology with reduced infrastructure costs. The integration of the front-end rectifier with the high-frequency inverter truly eliminates one power conversion stage and achieves more than 33% size, weight, volume, and cost reduction on the wireless charging systems. Furthermore, ORC eliminates the primary side direct current (DC) bus bulk capacitors that are usually aluminum electrolytic capacitors and replaces them with very small, cost-effective, highly reliable, and high-temperature operation-capable alternate current (AC) film capacitors. ORC is also applicable to both single-phase and poly-phase couplers. When used with polyphase couplers, ORC further improves the power density of the overall system with higher power density power electronics. Moreover, ORC is inherently bidirectional and allows the system to provide power back to the grid for grid ancillary or grid support services. The ORC, based on a patented ORNL technology, is an excellent approach to resolving the high-power charging problems as described above, which directly converts the 60 hertz (Hz) line frequency into high frequency (i.e., 85 kilohertz (kHz)) to use with a high-frequency isolation transformer or wireless charging coils while eliminating the primary side number of power conversion stages from two to one. The result of the project is a prototype and reference design for a high-power wireless charging system—including power electronics, magnetics, and thermal—serving as a baseline for product development. The proposed system results are demonstrated for 270 kW of output power, with the system's overall efficiency of 92% from the AC grid, achieving less than 3% current total harmonic distortion (THD) and around 0.99 power factor (PF).

Enabling Ultra-Compact, Lightweight, Efficient, and Reliable 6.6 kW On-Board Bi-Directional Electric Vehicle Charger with Advanced Topology and Control

The research explored new topologies, control methods, mechanical integration, and thermal management methods for electric vehicle (EV) on-board chargers. The team investigated capacitor-based power conversion, leveraging the high energy densities inherent to capacitive energy storage compared to inductive methods. The proposed topologies simultaneously enabled high power density and high efficiency of the design. The proposed architecture was demonstrated in a 6.6 kW bi-directional charger prototype. The research pursued several directions to improve system performance. Innovative topologies were studied for both the main power conversion stage as well as the single-phase twice-line-frequency energy buffer. To ensure robust and efficient operation, new control methods were developed to integrate these two subsystems. To achieve high power density in the full system solution, the mechanical structure of the charger is highly optimized to maximally fill the converter box volume. In parallel with the mechanical design effort, the converter was packaged with high-performance cooling methods which removed heat from key areas of power dissipation in the converter. The thermal management system was optimized to minimize its weight and volume, ultimately motivating the design of a custom additively manufactured cold-plate. The full system achieves a peak power of 7 kW with less than 0.3% total harmonic distortion (THD) and greater than 0.994 power factor in power factor correction (PFC) operation, corresponding to a total box-volume power density of 47.9 kW/L and gravimetric power density of 24.6 W/g. The system achieves a peak efficiency of 98.9%, with 97.9% efficiency at maximum power.

Benchmarking Real-Time Control Platforms Using a Matlab/Simulink Coder with Applications in the Control of DC/AC Switched Power Converters

In the control of DC/AC switched power converters (SPC), one of the most important aspects to be considered is the selection of the real-time control platform. The real-time control platform must be able to meet the high performance efficiency and regulation requirements of the DC/AC SPC, as these typically operate at switching frequencies in the order of kHz to MHz. For this reason, the hardware characteristics of the ADC and PWM, and the processing capacity of the real-time control platform are of vital importance when implementing advanced digital controllers that maintain voltage and current levels within regulatory standards. In this context, we aimed to perform a comparative study of the computation times of different real-time control platforms when implementing different control strategies for DC/AC switched power converters. We also analyzed the impact of the real-time control platforms on the THD of the voltages generated by the DC/AC switched power converters. With the help of this paper, researchers and developers will have criteria to select which real-time control platform to use in real-time control for DC/AC SPC applications.

Propulsion System Design using a Dual 3-Phase PM Synchronous Reluctance Machine with X-Type Multi-Level GaN Inverter

— A propulsion system design is exhibited here that comprises of an X-type GaN power module based dual multi-level inverter and a PM Synchronous Reluctance motor. With the critical benefits of multi-level operation, namely low common mode EMI noise, low switching loss, low current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), smoother torque and lower iron loss, this topology targets high system-level efficiency and high power density while using reduced rare earth (RE) elements in its motor. General Motors and Purdue University jointly designed and developed this 800V class, highly scalable traction drive that can deliver 200+ kW of power suitable for C-SUV to truck vehicle class. The 3-phase electric machine design utilizes dual winding with 6 terminals to work in line with the GaN X-type inverter, and results in a tractive solution that ensures higher machine efficiency while reducing cost and uncertainty related to use and availability of heavy rare earth/rare earth elements in its rotor.

Analyzing Distribution Transformer Degradation with Increased Power Electronic Loads

The influx of non-linear power electronic loads into the distribution network has the potential to disrupt the existing distribution transformer operations. They were not designed to mediate the excessive heating losses generated from the harmonics. To have a good understanding of current standing challenges, a knowledge of the generation and load mix as well as the current harmonic estimations are essential for designing transformers and evaluating their performance. In this paper, we investigate a mixture of essential power electronic loads for a household designed in PSCAD/EMTdc and their potential impacts on transformer eddy current losses and derating using harmonic analysis. Our findings reveal that in the presence of high power electronic loads (especially third harmonics), increasing PV generation may worsen transformer degradation. However, with a low amount of power electronic loads, additional PV generation helps to reduce the harmonic content in the current and improve transformer performance.

Analysis of Transformer Magnetizing Reactance Using Describing Function in Direct Power Control of Back-to-Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support

This paper presents a Port Controlled Hamiltonian based direct power control architecture for a back-to-back modular multilevel converter system connecting two ac sources at different frequencies. The system features advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE 1547-2018, implemented on the inverter side. The rectifier side controller ensures reference following for active and/or reactive powers and maintains the commanded dc bus voltage. The inverter side controller ensures power command following for active and reactive powers. The proposed control architecture is designed to suppress second harmonic oscillations in powers during unbalanced grid voltage sags by dynamically adjusting the currents on each ac side. This also ensures effective elimination of any second harmonic oscillations in the equivalent dc bus voltage. Validation is performed on an OPAL-RT real-time platform with case studies on unbalanced and balanced sags, demonstrating the controller's effectiveness during real time implementation. A reduced-scale laboratory prototype further verifies these case studies, with experimental results for balanced sags due to grid simulator limitations. The results confirm the robustness and efficiency of the proposed control strategy in ensuring stable and reliable operation under various grid conditions.
