The Completion of Surrogate Testing for Low-Temperature TEX and a Look Towards the Future

To address the mounting need for below room temperature nuclear data validation, the Low-Temperature Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (LT-TEX) have been designed. Validation of low-temperature neutron cross sections is necessary to verify any operation at temperatures below room temperature which is typically observed in environments far from the equator. For example, a fissile material transportation truck may routinely observe ambient temperatures down to -40°C, which is the lower temperature bound of the normal conditions of transportation defined in the United States Title 10 Code of Federal Regulations §71.71c2. Additionally, sub-room temperature benchmarks can validate newly produced cross sections, that include novel thermal scattering laws, from North Carolina State University.

Final Design for Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) with Lithium Absorbers to Provide Validation Benchmarks for Y-12 Electrorefining Facility (IER 575, CED-2 Report)

One of the main goals of the Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) project is to use existing Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) assets to create critical experiment plutonium and uranium test beds for materials important to criticality safety that have insufficient benchmark evaluations. The plutonium test bed experiments were completed in 2018 and are published in the 2020 edition of the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The uranium test bed assemblies were completed in 2023 and accepted in the 2024 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook.

Integral Experiment Execution of Thermal or Epithermal eXperiments using Plutonium with Polyethylene and Iron, IER 519, TEX-Hanford (-Iron), CED-3b

This report documents the execution of experiments and measurements for IER 519, Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) for Hanford applications, using plutonium Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) plates moderated by interstitial polyethylene and iron (Fe) absorber plates. Initial hand stack, mass, and dimensional measurements were performed in July 2025. The experiments were completed over three weeks from December 2025 to January 2026 at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS). All photos and critical data were provided by NCERC and experimenters in LANL’s NEN-2.

Displaying TeX Files On Graphics Terminals

Previewing of printouts saves time and paper. DVIVIEW program previews output from TeX on graphics terminals. Enables user to specify range of pages to be viewed, to change magnification of document, and to view each page in seven different modes affecting size and orientation of each page. Written in Pascal, FORTRAN, C, and Assembler.

FIBER-TEX 1992: The Sixth Conference on Advanced Engineering Fibers and Textile Structures for Composites

The FIBER-TEX 1992 proceedings contain the papers presented at the conference held on 27-29 Oct. 1992 at Drexel University. The conference was held to create a forum to encourage an interrelationship of the various disciplines involved in the fabrication of materials, the types of equipment, and the processes used in the production of advanced composite structures. Topics discussed were advanced engineering fibers, textile processes and structures, structural fabric production, mechanics and characteristics of woven composites, and the latest requirements for the use of textiles in the production of composite materials and structures as related to global activities focused on textile structural composites.

Assessment of the Loss of Vacuum on the Local Metal Temperature in the TEX Experiment Assembly

A four-part assessment using analytical methods and semi-analytical simulation tools finds that the maximum temperature variation in the highly enriched uranium (HEU) Jemima plate assembly is less than ten Kelvin (< 10 K) in an abrupt loss of vacuum scenario. The temperature variation in the metals is likely to be one to four Kelvin (1 K – 4 K) based on the most realistic conditions in the assessment. The four assessment parts include: (1) the peak gas temperature bound for the initial influx of the ambient air; (2) the high-heat transfer limit during the high-speed forced convection period in an insulated HEU plate; (3) the high-heat transfer limit during the high-speed forced convection period with aluminum spacers; and (4) the longer-time thermal equilibration period between the air and metal stack. The four-part assessment serves as conservative upper bound on the temperature variation in the metal stack and remains well below the 40 Kelvin limit where the temperature-induced stresses could lead to permanent, plastic deformation.

Lunar Science Conference, 4th, Houston, Tex., March 5-8, 1973, Proceedings. Volume 1 - Mineralogy and petrology. Volume 2 - Chemical and isotope analyses. Organic chemistry. Volume 3 - Physical properties

The mineralogy, petrology, chemistry, isotopic composition, and physical properties of lunar materials are described in papers detailing methods, results, and implications of research on samples returned from eight lunar landing sites: Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, and Luna 16 and 20. The results of experiments conducted or set up on the lunar surface by the astronauts are also described along with observations taken from Command Modules and subsatellites. Major topics include general geology, soil and breccia studies, petrologic studies, mineralogic analyses, elemental compositions, radiometric age determinations, rare gas chemistry, radionuclides, organogenic compounds, particle track records, thermal properties, seismic studies, resonance studies, orbital mapping, lunar atmosphere, magnetic studies, electrical studies, optical properties, and microcratering. Individual items are announced in this issue.
