Telemetering and telecommunications research

The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications systems is engaged in advanced communications systems research. Four areas of study that are being sponsored concern investigations into the use of trellis-coded modulation (TCM). In particular, two areas concentrate on carrier synchronization research in TCM M-ary phase shift key (MPSK) systems. A third research topic is the study of interference effects on TCM, while the fourth research area is in the field of concatenated TCM systems.

Communications, Signal Processing, and Telemetering Research Program Review

A Communications, Signal Processing, and Telemetering Research Program Review was held on February 23, 1999. Research conducted under the grant was presented and reviewed, for progress, and for possible technology transfers. The research reviewed was in the following areas: (1) Bandwidth-efficient Modulation and nonlinear equalization; (2) Investigation of an architecture for parallel signal processing applicable to communications problems; (3)Coded partial response over satellites; (4) synchronization at Low SNR; (5) Serial concatenated convolutional codes and some implementation issues on high rate turbo codes; (6) Flight experiments; (7) Real time doppler tracking; (8) Space protocol testing; (9) Lightweight optical communications without carrying a laser in space. The presentations are given by the graduate students who performed the research.

The Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications Systems

This report comprises the final technical report for the research grant 'Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications Systems' sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center. The grant activities are broken down into the following technology areas: (1) Space Protocol Testing; (2) Autonomous Reconfiguration of Ground Station Receivers; (3) Satellite Cluster Communications; and (4) Bandwidth Efficient Modulation. The grant activity produced a number of technical reports and papers that were communicated to NASA as they were generated. This final report contains the final summary papers or final technical report conclusions for each of the project areas. Additionally, the grant supported students who made progress towards their degrees while working on the research.

Elimination of redundancy in telemetered data

Procedure for estimating the intensity of a Poisson process can be readily programmed for a digital computer, and does not require an a priori probability space. Reduction of the sampling rate is possible without sacrificing significant information.

Implanted telemeter for electrocardiogram and body temperature

Measuring system requiring one blocking oscillator to generate modulated pulse repetition rate is implantable in the bodies of small animals. Device has life of two years and transmission range of about three feet. EKG sensing unit also is used to sense electromyogram or electrooculogram of laboratory animals.

High altitude aircraft direction using real-time scientific analysis of telemetered data

Microscale and some mesoscale scientific targets are often too small and fast moving in a dynamic atmosphere. In this environment the ER-2 may spend only a small time sampling the phenomena of interest. The ER-2 scientists currently rely on post-flight analysis to determine the success of the mission and to provide input for planning the next flight. Real time analysis, combined with realistic modeling, can provide important clues to significantly enhance the probability of success in the investigation of specific scientific targets.
