Effect of sucrose on technetium and rhenium retention during vitrification of low-activity wastes

Sucrose (C 12 H 22 O 11 ) has been used in low-activity waste (LAW) melter feeds containing large fractions of nitrates, nitrites, or both because it facilitates foam suppression and denitration. This study focused on the effect of sucrose in LAW feeds on technetium (Tc) and rhenium (Re) retention. The amount of sucrose added in feeds was varied to differentiate the carbon-to-nitrogen mole ratio (C/N ratio). The results show that larger sucrose addition (higher C/N ratio) enhances Tc and Re retention. Reducing conditions induced by sucrose decomposition and early chemical reactions between sucrose and NaNO 3 /NaNO 2 are expected to increase Tc and Re retention. However, high sucrose addition decreased sulfur (S) retention slightly because sodium sulfate decomposes in reducing conditions at lower temperature. This early sulfate decomposition can affect Tc and Re retention partly because these species can be soluble in sulfate phases. This correlation indicates that the decrease of sulfate phases in the glass by early decomposition can reduce the solubility of Tc and Re in the sulfate phases, which may increase Tc and Re retention in the glass. In addition, continuous gas evolution and vigorous foaming at the foaming temperature range of 700–900°C may influence Tc and Re retention process interrupting retention or facilitating volatilization.

The Prospective Search for Highly Ionized Technetium in Hot (pre-) White Dwarfs

The discovery of technetium (Tc) in the atmospheres of red giants by Merrill (1952, ApJ, 116, 21) constituted convincing proof that s-process nucleosynthesis is indeed occurring in evolved stars. In principle, Tc should still be present in the atmospheres of hot post-AGB stars and (pre-) white dwarfs although, due to radioactive decay, it should be present in decreasing quantities along post-AGB evolution. The recent discovery of a large number of trans-iron group elements in hot white dwarfs with atomic numbers in the range A = 30-56 (Zn to Ba) raises the prospect that Tc (A = 43) may also be detected. However, this is currently not feasible because no atomic data exist for ionization stages beyond Tc ii. As an initial step, we calculated atomic energy levels and oscillator strengths of Tc iv-vi and used these data to compute non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres to estimate at which minimum abundance level Tc could be detected. We show that Tc lines can be found in ultraviolet spectra of hot white dwarfs provided Tc is as abundant as other detected trans-Fe elements. We find that radiative levitation can keep Tc in large, easily detectable quantities in the atmosphere. A direct identification of Tc lines is still not feasible because wavelength positions cannot be computed with necessary precision. Laboratory measurements are necessary to overcome this problem. Our results suggest that such efforts are beneficial to the astrophysical community.

Zero Valent Iron for Reductive Removal of Technetium-99 from Aqueous Sulfate Solutions - 20347

This research investigates the reductive removal of technetium-99 ({sup 99}Tc) by zero valent iron (ZVI) from low activity waste (LAW) off-gas condensate simulant as a secondary treatment after recovery from vitrification planned at the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP). Due to its high volatility, only a fraction of Tc{sup (VII)} will be incorporated into glass waste forms. Volatilized Tc will be captured by an off-gas treatment system with current plans to recycle off-gas condensate back to the vitrification facility. The scheme with off-gas recycling will increase Tc loading in the glass waste, but will also increase the concentrations of sulfate, halides, and other problematic constituents impeding overall LAW processing and increasing volume of the glass product. This study focuses on Tc{sup (VII)} removal by ZVI as a feasible pathway to minimize off-gas condensate recycling, which may result in a reduction in the volumes of LAW waste to be immobilized and subsequent cost savings. ZVI is an established treatment agent for redox-active contaminants such as trichloroethylene, nitrate, arsenic, chromium, phenol, and others. It is a commercially available and cost-effective material. Our previous experiments showed that ZVI is very efficient for the reductive removal of {sup 99}Tc. In this work we studied ZVI oxidation under aerobic conditions at pH 7 with 0.1 M Na{sub 2}SO{sub 4} solution (ionic strength, IS, 0.3 M) in the presence and absence of {sup 99}Tc. The concentration of {sup 99}Tc and the changes in pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of the simulated solutions were monitored over 8 days. The formation of iron oxide phases was probed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Obtained results suggest that ZVI contact time with {sup 99}Tc containing solutions for 6 hours resulted in nearly complete removal of {sup 99}Tc from the aqueous phase. XRD analysis showed that the oxidation of ZVI is rapid with formation of magnetite (Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}) with minor percentage of goethite and maghemite. This work is a part of a larger set of studies investigating the feasibility of {sup 99}Tc reductive removal from the LAW off-gas condensate. (authors)

Metallic Technetium Sequestration in Nickel Core/Shell Microstructure during Fe(OH)2 Transformation with Ni doping

This study investigates the impacts of Ni doping on technetium-99 (Tc) sequestration in aqueous solutions through transformation of Fe(OH)2(s) to iron spinel (magnetite) under alkaline conditions. Extensive solid characterization was performed for the mineral phases produced, as well as the Tc/Ni speciation and distribution within these phases. X-ray diffraction results show that iron spinel was the dominant mineral product without detectable Ni incorporation. The doped Ni ions mainly precipitated as fine Fe/Ni oxide/hydroxide particles, including strongly reduced nanometer?sized spheroidal Ni-rich and metallic Ni phases. High-resolution analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy on the produced solid samples (focused ion beam-prepared specimens) revealed three Tc distribution domains dominated by nanocrystals and, especially, a Tc-rich metallic phase. Instances of metallic Tc were specifically found in spheroidal, Ni-rich and metallic nanoparticles exhibiting a core/shell microstructure that suggests strong reduction and sequential precipitation of Ni-Tc-Ni. Mass balance analysis showed nearly 100% Tc removal from the 4.8 × 10-4 M Tc solutions. The finding of the metallic Tc encapsulation indicates that Tc sequestration through Ni-doped Fe(OH)2(s)?to?iron spinel transformation process likely provides an alternative treatment pathway for Tc removal and could be combined into further waste treatment approaches.

Radiolytic evaluation of a new technetium redox control reagent for advanced used nuclear fuel separations

Technetium is a problematic radioisotope for used nuclear fuel (UNF) and subsequent waste management owing to its high environmental mobility and coextraction in reprocessing technologies as the pertechnetate anion (TcO 4 - ). Consequently, several strategies are under development to control the transport of this radioisotope. A proposed approach is to use diaminoguanidine (DAG) for TcO 4 - and transuranic ion redox control. Although the initial DAG molecule is ultimately consumed in the redox process, its susceptibility to radiolysis is currently unknown under envisioned UNF reprocessing conditions, which is a critical knowledge gap for evaluating its overall suitability for this role. To this end, we report the impacts of steady-state gamma irradiation on the rate of DAG radiolysis in water, aqueous 2.0 M nitric acid (HNO 3 ), and in a biphasic solvent system composed of aqueous 2.0 M HNO 3 in contact with 1.5 M N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (DEHiBA) dissolved in n-dodecane. In addition, we report chemical kinetics for the reaction of DAG with key transients arising from electron pulse radiolysis, specifically the hydrated electron (e aq - ), hydrogen atom (H ˙ ), and hydroxyl ( ˙ OH) and nitrate (NO 3 ˙ ) radicals. The DAG molecule exhibited significant reactivity with the ˙ OH and NO 3 ˙ radicals, indicating that oxidation would be the predominant degradation pathway in radiation environments. This is consistent with its role as a reducing agent. Steady-state gamma irradiations demonstrated that DAG is readily degraded within a few hundred kilogray, the rate of which was found to increase upon going from water to HNO 3 containing solutions and solvents systems. This was attributed to a thermal reaction between DAG and the predominant HNO 3 radiolysis product, nitrous acid (HNO 2 ), k(DAG + HNO 2 ) = 5480 ± 85 M -1 s -1 . Although no evidence was found for the radiolysis of DAG altering the radiation chemistry of the contacted DEHiBA/n-dodecane phase in the investigated biphasic system, the utility of DAG as a redox control reagent will likely be limited by significant competition with its degradation by HNO 2 .

Detection and quantification of trace technetium in the presence of molybdenum using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Technetium (Tc) is a very important element that is encountered in many aspects, from its presence in radioactive waste and its potential environmental impact to its use as a medical radioisotope. Its detection and quantification in liquid samples is traditionally cumbersome, involving detailed sample preparation and analysis by mass spectrometry or scintillation. This article demonstrates the first comprehensive emission spectral analysis of Tc from a liquid sample by immobilization in a polymer and analysis by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A survey of LIBS spectra was completed to identify the strongest analytical lines for quantification of trace Tc in the presence of Mo. The quantification of Tc in a Mo-containing matrix was selected because Tc radioisotopes are the daughter products of Mo isotope decay. The first reported calibration curves by LIBS are provided with limits of detection and quantification down to 0.710 µg mL −1 and 1.39 µg mL −1 , respectively. Ultimately, this study demonstrated the feasibility of trace Tc quantification using LIBS and will serve as a reference for future research related to monitoring this radioactive species.

β -Technetium: An allotrope with a nonstandard volume-pressure relationship

In this work, we report the synthesis and structure of the second allotrope of technetium, β-Tc. Transformative pathways are accessed at extreme conditions using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell and confirmed with in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. βTc is fully recoverable to ambient conditions, although counter to our DFT calculations predicting a face-centered-cubic lattice, we observe a tetragonal structure (I4/mmm) that exhibits further tetragonal distortion with pressure. β-Tc has an expanded volume relative to the hcp ground state phase, that when doped with nitrogen has an unexpected volume lowering. Such anomalous behavior is possibly indicative of a rare electronic phase transition in a 4d element.
