Fluidic Oscillator Array for Synchronized Oscillating Jet Generation

A fluidic oscillator array includes a plurality of fluidic-oscillator main flow channels. Each main flow channel has an inlet and an outlet. Each main flow channel has first and second control ports disposed at opposing sides thereof, and has a first and a second feedback ports disposed at opposing sides thereof. The feedback ports are located downstream of the control ports with respect to a direction of a fluid flow through the main flow channel. The system also includes a first fluid accumulator in fluid communication with each first control port and each first feedback port, and a second fluid accumulator in fluid communication with each second control port and each second feedback port.

Synchronization of wind turbine generators against an infinite bus under gusting wind conditions

Studies of synchronizing a wind turbine generator against an infinite bus are performed on a digital computer. In the digital simulation, wind gusts of different magnitudes and durations are hypothesized. Prior to the synchronization, differences of the frequency and phase position between voltages of the alternator and the bus are also included in the simulation. Solutions for rotor speed, generator power angle, electromagnetic torque, wind turbine torque, wind turbine blade pitch angle, and armature current are simulated and presented graphically. The ERDA-NASA 100-kW wind turbine is used as a case study. The results so obtained will thus have immediate applications.

Synchronous charge-constrained electroquasistatic generator

Electroquasistatic generator depends on electroquasistatic interactions to provide synchronous operation. The generator employs a moving insulating belt, with an ac electric potential source to establish positively and negatively charged regions on the belt. The field effect of the charges on the belt creates an ac output voltage.

An ultrasonic plethysmograph for space flight applications

The development of an ultrasonic plethysmograph based on the transit time measurement principle is reported, which meets the space-imposed requirements for evaluating cardiovascular deconditioning. It consists of a pulse generator, pulse receiver amplifier, voltage comparator, synchronous pulse generator, elapsed time counter, and transmit and receive piezoelectric crystals resonant at 2 MHz and of 3 mm diameter. The transit time for an ultrasonic pulse to propagate across a limb cross section is computed in a digital fashion using a 32 MHz clock, and resolution is 0.049 mm with the range being approximately 200 mm. Experimental results regarding dynamic system response were found comparable in both accuracy and sensitivity to those of a Whitney strain gage using a 50 torr venous occlusion.

Synchronization of the DOE/NASA 100-kilowatt wind turbine generator with a large utility network

The DOE/NASA 100 kilowatt wind turbine generator system was synchronized with a large utility network. The system equipments and procedures associated with the synchronization process were described. Time history traces of typical synchronizations were presented indicating that power and current transients resulting from the synchronizing procedure are limited to acceptable magnitudes.

An operating 200 kW horizontal axis wind turbine

Output from the 200-kilowatt machine will be enough to meet the power requirements of about 60 families. The experimental wind turbine generator (WTG) is a two-bladed, horizontal-axis, rotor system driving a synchronous electric generator through a step-up gear box located within a nacelle. The nacelle is mounted on top of a 100-foot tower with the rotor located downwind from the tower. The 200-kilowatt rated power output of the wind turbine is achieved at a turbine rotor speed of 40 rpm and a rated wind speed of 18.3 mph. The rated wind speed is defined as the lowest wind speed at which full power is achieved. Attention is given to operational details, aspects of blade design, blade fabrication, the use of strain gages, questions of aeroelastic stability, and an early analysis of test data.

Synchronization of the ERDA-NASA 100 kW wind turbine generator with large utility networks

The synchronizing of a wind turbine generator against an infinite bus under random conditions is studied for the first time. With a digital computer, complete solutions for rotor speed, generator power angle, electromagnetic torque, wind turbine torque, wind turbine blade pitch angle, and armature current are obtained and presented by graphs. Experiments have been recently performed on the ERDA-NASA 100 kW wind turbine. Experimental results matched computer study results very closely and confirmed that the synchronization can be accomplished by means of the existing speed control system and an automatic synchronizer.

Noninterlaced-To-Interlaced Television-Scan Converter

Computer text and ordinary images displayed together without text jitter. Scan converter enables superposition of alphanumerical text generated by computer-driven video generator on National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard interlaced-scan image. Made of commercially available integrated circuits and operates in conjunction with NTSC synchronizing-signal generator. Standard television picture transmitted in two interlaced fields. Without scan converter, text image moves up and down by one line as fields change. With scan converter, text image stands still.

Pulse Generator

An apparatus and a computer-implemented method for generating pulses synchronized to a rising edge of a tachometer signal from rotating machinery are disclosed. For example, in one embodiment, a pulse state machine may be configured to generate a plurality of pulses, and a period state machine may be configured to determine a period for each of the plurality of pulses.

Trajectory Generation for Distributed Electric Propulsion Vehicles with Propeller Synchronization

In this paper, we propose a method for generating dynamically feasible trajectories for an acoustically aware vehicle with propeller phase control. The trajectory generation procedure allows both propeller phase control and navigation objectives to be considered simultaneously. The presented method is demonstrated where the mission objectives are given as a desired position and phase trajectory. From these trajectories, the full desired state of the vehicle is calculated. Furthermore, the control inputs that realize the desired mission objectives are computed. The acoustic performance for the given trajectory is estimated in terms of sound pressure level as a function of tracking performance. The method is demonstrated in simulation, where the vehicle must navigate through an urban environment with both spatial and acoustic constraints. In the presented scenario, the vehicle must follow a given flight path, and can only reduce sound pressure level by changing the propeller phase targets.

Full color hybrid display for aircraft simulators

A full spectrum color monitor, connected to the camera and lens system of a television camera supported by a gantry frame over a terrain model simulating an aircraft landing zone, projects the monitor image onto a lens or screen visually accessible to a trainee in the simulator. A digital computer produces a pattern corresponding to the lights associated with the landing strip onto a monochromatic display, and an optical system projects the calligraphic image onto the same lens so that it is superposed on the video representation of the landing field. The optical system includes a four-color wheel which is rotated between the calligraphic display and the lens, and an apparatus for synchronizing the generation of a calligraphic pattern with the color segments on the color wheel. A servo feedback system responsive to the servo motors on the gantry frame produces an input to the computer so that the calligraphically generated signal corresponds in shape, size and location to the video signal.

Binary-Symmetry Detection

Transmission errors for zeros and ones tabulated separately. Binary-symmetry detector employs psuedo-random data pattern used as test message coming through channel. Message then modulo-2 added to locally generated and synchronized version of test data pattern in same manner found in manufactured test sets of today. Binary symmetrical channel shows nearly 50-percent ones to 50-percent zeroes correspondence. Degree of asymmetry represents imbalances due to either modulation, transmission, or demodulation processes of system when perturbed by noise.

Wind Generators

When Enerpro, Inc. president, Frank J. Bourbeau, attempted to file a patent on a system for synchronizing a wind generator to the electric utility grid, he discovered Marshall Space Flight Center's Frank Nola's power factor controller. Bourbeau advanced the technology and received a NASA license and a patent for his Auto Synchronous Controller (ASC). The ASC reduces generator "inrush current," which occurs when large generators are abruptly brought on line. It controls voltage so the generator is smoothly connected to the utility grid when it reaches its synchronous speed, protecting the components from inrush current damage. Generator efficiency is also increased in light winds by applying lower than rated voltage. Wind energy is utilized to drive turbines to generate electricity for utility companies.
