Field space geometry and nonlinear supersymmetry

We propose a geometric formulation of effective field theories via nonlinear supersymmetry. Nonsupersymmetric particles are embedded in constrained superfields governed by a nonlinear σ model, and operators are collected into potentials on the target space. The use of chiral superfields standardizes the treatment of flavor across scalars and fermions, and the minimal jet bundle extension makes invariance under derivative field redefinitions manifest. Measurements of $W^{+}W^{-}$ production in decay topologies inspired by searches for electroweak supersymmetry

This paper presents a measurement of fiducial and differential cross-sections for $W$ + $W$ - production in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events with exactly one electron, one muon and no hadronic jets are studied. The fiducial region in which the measurements are performed is inspired by searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric charginos decaying to two-lepton final states. The selected events have moderate values of missing transverse momentum and the ‘stransverse mass’ variable $m$ T2 , which is widely used in searches for supersymmetry at the LHC. The ranges of these variables are chosen so that the acceptance is enhanced for direct $W$ + $W$ - production and suppressed for production via top quarks, which is treated as a background. The fiducial cross-section and particle-level differential cross-sections for six variables are measured and compared with two theoretical SM predictions from perturbative QCD calculations.

Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and three or more b-jets in 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for supersymmetry involving the pair production of gluinos decaying via off-shell third-generation squarks into the lightest neutralino ($\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$) is reported. It exploits LHC proton–proton collision data at a centre-of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected with the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018. The search uses events containing large missing transverse momentum, up to one electron or muon, and several energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as containing b-hadrons. Both a simple kinematic event selection and an event selection based upon a deep neural network are used. No significant excess above the predicted background is found. In simplified models involving the pair production of gluinos that decay via off-shell top (bottom) squarks, gluino masses less than 2.44 TeV (2.35 TeV) are excluded at 95% CL for a massless $\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$. Limits are also set on the gluino mass in models with variable branching ratios for gluino decays to $b$$\overline{b}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$, $t$$\overline{t}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$ and $t$$\overline{b}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{-}$ / $t$$\overline{b}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{+}$.

Remarks about massive and massless particles in supersymmetry

The internal space-time symmetry and simple supersymmetry of relativistic particles are briefly discussed in terms of the little group of the Poincare group. The little group generators in a finite-dimensional matrix representation of the N = 1 super-Poincare algebra are explicitly constructed. The supergeometry of a massive case continuously becomes that of a massless case in the infinite-momentum limit. The origin of the gage transformations associated with the massless supermultiplets becomes transparent in that limit.

Can black holes preserve 𝒩 > 4 supersymmetry?

The dynamics of near-BPS black holes are governed by the breaking of the conformal symmetry that emerges near their horizons. Using the classification of superconformal symmetries, we systematically classify and quantize all effective theories that can arise in the near-BPS limit of black holes. Using these results, we argue — under certain physical assumptions — that BPS black holes cannot preserve more than four supercharges. This conclusion is consistent with existing constructions in string theory.

Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and charm-tagged jets using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The paper presents a search for supersymmetric particles produced in proton-proton collisions at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and decaying into final states with missing transverse momentum and jets originating from charm quarks. The data were taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN from 2015 to 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. No significant excess of events over the expected Standard Model background expectation is observed in optimized signal regions, and limits are set on the production cross-sections of the supersymmetric particles. Pair production of charm squarks or top squarks, each decaying into a charm quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle χ~10$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$, is excluded at 95% confidence level for squarks with masses up to 900 GeV for scenarios where the mass of χ~10$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ is below 50 GeV. Additionally, the production of leptoquarks with masses up to 900 GeV is excluded for the scenario where up-type leptoquarks decay into a charm quark and a neutrino. Model-independent limits on cross-sections and event yields for processes beyond the Standard Model are also reported.

Lepto-axiogenesis and the scale of supersymmetry

If the Peccei-Quinn field containing the QCD axion undergoes rotations in the early universe, the dimension-five operator responsible for neutrino masses can generate a lepton asymmetry that ultimately gives rise to the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. This lepto-axiogenesis scenario requires a flat potential for the radial direction of the Peccei-Quinn field, naturally realized in supersymmetric models. We carefully compute the efficiency of this mechanism for the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) and Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (KSVZ) axion models and place lower bounds on the masses of scalar superpartners required to reproduce the observed baryon asymmetry. For the KSVZ model, we find an efficiency for generation of the asymmetry six times larger than the previously extant computation after including scattering channels involving superpartners. In this case, the superpartner scale should be above 30 TeV for a domain wall number of one; the lower bound weakens for larger domain wall numbers. We find that the superpartner mass scale may also be as low as ~ 30 TeV for the DFSZ model. In all cases, the lower bound on the superpartner masses is inversely proportional to the sum of the squares of the neutrino masses and so can strengthen as the upper bound on the neutrino mass improves. We identify the parameter space where the axion rotation can simultaneously produce axion dark matter via kinetic misalignment; in this case it is possible to put an upper bound of order PeV on the masses of scalar superpartners.

Fine-tuned vs. natural supersymmetry: what does the string landscape predict?

A vast array of (metastable) vacuum solutions arise from string compactifications, each leading to different 4-d laws of physics. The space of these solutions, known as the string landscape, allows for an environmental solution to the cosmological constant problem. We examine the possibility of an environmental solution to the gauge hierarchy problem. We argue that the landscape favors softly broken supersymmetric models over particle physics models containing quadratic divergences, such as the Standard Model. We present a scheme for computing relative probabilities for supersymmetric models to emerge from the landscape. The probabilities are related to the likelihood that the derived value of the weak scale lies within the Agrawal et al. (ABDS) allowed window of values leading to atoms as we know them. This then favors natural SUSY models over unnatural (SUSY and other) models via a computable probability measure.

First-order formalism for β functions in bosonic sigma models from supersymmetry breaking

We consider the renormalization group flow equation for the two-dimensional sigma models with the Kähler target space. The first-order formulation allows us to treat perturbations in these models as current-current deformations. We demonstrate, however, that the conventional first-order formalism misses certain anomalies in the measure, and should be amended. We reconcile beta functions obtained within the conformal perturbation theory for the current-current deformations with traditional “geometric” results obtained in the background field methods, in this way resolving the peculiarities pointed out in O. Gamayun et al. [Peculiarities of beta functions in sigma models, J. High Energy Phys. 10 (2023) 097]. The result is achieved by the supersymmetric completion of the first-order sigma model.

Search for supersymmetry in final states with disappearing tracks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV

A search is presented for charged, long-lived supersymmetric particles in final states with one or more disappearing tracks. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb −1 . The search is performed over final states characterized by varying numbers of jets, 𝑏-tagged jets, electrons, and muons. The length of signal-candidate tracks in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis is used to characterize the lifetimes of wino- and Higgsino-like charginos produced in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The d⁢𝐸/d⁢𝑥 energy loss of signal-candidate tracks is used to increase the sensitivity to charginos with a large mass and thus a small Lorentz boost. The observed results are found to be statistically consistent with the background-only hypothesis. Limits on the pair-production cross section of gluinos and squarks are presented in the framework of simplified models of supersymmetric particle production and decay, and for electroweakino production based on models of wino and Higgsino dark matter. The limits presented are the most stringent to date for scenarios with light third-generation squarks and a wino- or Higgsino-like dark matter candidate capable of explaining the observed dark matter relic density.

Stress Tensor flows, birefringence in non-linear electrodynamics and supersymmetry

We identify the unique stress tensor deformation which preserves zero-birefringence conditions in non-linear electrodynamics, which is a 4d 4 d version of the T\overline{T} T T ¯ operator. We study the flows driven by this operator in the three Lagrangian theories without birefringence - Born-Infeld, Plebanski, and reverse Born-Infeld - all of which admit ModMax-like generalizations using a root- T\overline{T} T T ¯ -like flow that we analyse in our paper. We demonstrate one way of making this root- T\overline{T} T T ¯ -like flow manifestly supersymmetric by writing the deforming operator in \mathcal{N} = 1 𝒩 = 1 superspace and exhibit two examples of superspace flows. We present scalar analogues in d = 2 d = 2 with similar properties as these theories of electrodynamics in d = 4 d = 4 . Surprisingly, the Plebanski-type theories are fixed points of the classical T\overline{T} T T ¯ -like flows, while the Born-Infeld-type examples satisfy new flow equations driven by relevant operators constructed from the stress tensor. Finally, we prove that any theory obtained from a classical stress-tensor-squared deformation of a conformal field theory gives rise to a related “subtracted” theory for which the stress-tensor-squared operator is a constant.
