NeuDiff Agent: a governed AI workflow for single-crystal neutron crystallography

Large-scale facilities increasingly face analysis and reporting latency as a limiting step in scientific throughput, particularly for structural studies that require iterative reduction, integration, refinement and validation. To improve the time to result and analysis efficiency, NeuDiff Agent is introduced as a governed, tool-using AI workflow for TOPAZ at the Spallation Neutron Source. NeuDiff Agent takes instrument data through reduction, integration, refinement and validation to a validated crystal structure and a publication-ready CIF. NeuDiff Agent coordinates established crystallographic tools under explicit governance by restricting actions to allowlisted tools, enforcing fail-closed verification gates at key workflow boundaries, and capturing complete provenance for inspection, auditing and controlled replay. The present benchmark is limited to structural crystallography for periodic structures; magnetic structure analysis and incommensurate or superspace refinement are outside the scope of the current workflow. Performance is assessed using a fixed prompt protocol and repeated end-to-end runs with two large language model backends, with user and machine time partitioned and intervention burden and recovery behaviors quantified under gating. In a reference-case benchmark, NeuDiff Agent reduces wall time from 435 min (manual) to 86.5 ± 4.7 to 94.4 ± 3.5 min (4.6–5.0× faster) while producing a validated CIF with no checkCIF level A or B alerts. These results establish a practical route to deploy agentic AI in facility crystallography while preserving traceability and publication-facing validation requirements.

On Current-Squared Flows and ModMax Theories

We show that the recently introduced ModMax theory of electrodynamics and its Born-Infeld-like generalization are related by a flow equation driven by a quadratic combination of stress-energy tensors. The operator associated to this flow is a 4d 4 d analogue of the T\overline{T} T T ¯ deformation in two dimensions. This result generalizes the observation that the ordinary Born-Infeld Lagrangian is related to the free Maxwell theory by a current-squared flow. As in that case, we show that no analogous relationship holds in any other dimension besides d=4 d = 4 . We also demonstrate that the \mathcal{N}=1 𝒩 = 1 supersymmetric version of the ModMax-Born-Infeld theory obeys a related supercurrent-squared flow which is formulated directly in \mathcal{N} = 1 𝒩 = 1 superspace.

Shinkolobweite, from the Shinkolobwe Mine, Democratic Republic of Congo: A New Mineral Containing Uranium in the Rare Pentavalent Oxidation State

ABSTRACT Shinkolobweite, Pb1.333[U5+O(OH)(UO2)5O4.67(OH)5.33](H2O)5, is a new lead uranyl oxide-hydroxide hydrate mineral containing hexavalent and pentavalent uranium from the Shinkolobwe mine, Democratic Republic of Congo. Crystals of shinkolobweite are dark reddish-brown prisms up to 0.5 mm in length, occurring on a matrix of massive uraninite associated with fourmarierite, rutherfordine, soddyite, and sklodowskite. Crystals are translucent with subadamantine luster and light bronze-yellow streak, are flattened on {010}, are elongated on [001], and exhibit the forms {100}, {010}, {101}, and . The mineral is non-fluorescent under both longwave and shortwave ultraviolet illumination. It has a Mohs hardness of ∼2 and exhibits brittle tenacity with perfect cleavage on {010}, imperfect cleavage on {100}, and even fracture. The calculated density is 5.853 g/cm3 based on the empirical formula. Electron probe microanalysis provided the empirical formula Pb1.290U6+4.876U5+1.166O27H16.633 based on 27 O apfu and U5+:U6+ determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Shinkolobweite is orthorhombic, superspace group Pnnm(0b0)000, a = 14.4808(4), b = 7.0681(8), c = 11.9423(3) Å, V = 1222.32(15) Å3, modulation wave vector [0 1/3 0], and Z = 2. The structure was refined from 8959 reflections to a final R1 = 0.0736 for all reflections. Uranyl oxide-hydroxide sheets in shinkolobweite adopt the β-U3O8 topology and possess (3 + 1) commensurately modulated ordering that results from the long-range ordering of U5+ and U6+ in the sheet, as well as the position and occupancy of interlayer Pb2+ cations. Observations of a topological transition between α-U3O8 and β-U3O8 type sheets in shinkolobweite supplements our understanding of U5+ mineral oxidation and stability.

Time Evolution in Quantum Cosmology

The quantum description of time evolution in non-linear gravitational systems such as cosmological space-times is not well understood. We show, in the simplified setting of mini-superspace, that time evolution of this system can be obtained using a gauge fixed path integral, as long as one does not integrate over proper time. Using this gauge fixed action we can construct a Hamiltonian in the coherent - or classical - state basis. We show that by construction the coherent states satisfy the classical dynamical equations of General Relativity. They do not satisfy the Hamiltonian constraint. A consequence of this is that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation should not be satisfied in quantum gravity. Classical states have a natural non-trivial time evolution since they are not eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. A general feature of the unconstrained quantum theory of gravity is the prediction of a pressureless dark matter component of either sign energy density in the classical universe which may lead to novel phenomenology.

The coset construction for particles of arbitrary spin

When a Poincaré-invariant system spontaneously breaks continuous internal symmetries, Goldstones’ theorem demands the existence of massless, spin-zero excitations in a one-to-one correspondence with the broken symmetry generators. When a system spontaneously breaks Poincaré symmetry, however, the kinds of excitations that satisfy Goldstone’s theorem can be quite unusual. In particular, they may have any spin and need not be particles or even quasiparticles. The standard coset construction used to formulate effective actions of Goldstones, however, is rather restrictive and is incapable of generating the full spectrum of possibilities allowed by Goldstone’s theorem. We propose a (partial) remedy to this problem by postulating a novel coset construction for systems that spontaneously break Poincaré symmetry. This new construction is capable of generating effective actions with a wide range of Goldstone excitations — including fermionic degrees of freedom — even when all symmetries are bosonic. To demonstrate its utility, we focus on constructing effective actions for point particles of various spins. We recover the known result that a particle of spin s requires an \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 s supersymmetric worldline reparameterization gauge symmetry, which we implement at the level of the coset construction. In the process, we discover that massless particles require a novel kind of inverse Higgs constraint that bears some resemblance to the dynamical inverse Higgs constraints that appear in certain fermi liquid effective field theories. We then consider particles that, in addition to quantum spin, have finite spatial extent and are free to rotate. We derive a novel action for such particles and find a ‘spin-orbital’ coupling between the intrinsic quantum spin and the physical-rotation degrees of freedom.

T$ \overline{T} $ deformation in SCFTs and integrable supersymmetric theories

We calculate the \( \mathcal{S} \) -multiplets for two-dimensional Euclidean \( \mathcal{N} \) = (0 , 2) and \( \mathcal{N} \) = (2 , 2) superconformal field theories under the T \( \overline{T} \) deformation at leading order of perturbation theory in the deformation coupling. Then, from these \( \mathcal{N} \) = (0 , 2) deformed multiplets, we calculate two- and three-point correlators. We show the \( \mathcal{N} \) = (0 , 2) chiral ring’s elements do not flow under the T \( \overline{T} \) deformation. Specializing to integrable supersymmetric seed theories, such as \( \mathcal{N} \) = (2 , 2) Landau-Ginzburg models, we use the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to study the S-matrices and ground state energies. From both an S-matrix perspective and Melzer’s folding prescription, we show that the deformed ground state energy obeys the inviscid Burgers’ equation. Finally, we show that several indices independent of D -term perturbations including the Witten index, Cecotti-Fendley-Intriligator-Vafa index and elliptic genus do not flow under the T \( \overline{T} \) deformation.
