Search for the lepton-flavor-violating τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − , where ℓ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 428 fb −1 recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events containing a signal candidate is based on an inclusive-tagging reconstruction and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. Upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.3 and 2.5 × 10 −8 are set at the 90% confidence level. These results are the most stringent bounds to date for four of the modes.

Positron sources: from conventional to advanced accelerator concepts-based colliders

Positron sources are the key elements for the future and current lepton collider projects such as ILC, CLIC, SuperKEKB, FCC-ee, Muon Collider/LEMMA, etc., introducing challenging critical requirements for high intensity and low emittance beams in order to achieve high luminosity. In fact, due to their large production emittance and constraints given by the target thermal load, the main collider parameters such as the peak and average current, the emittances, the damping time, the repetition frequency and consequently the luminosity are determined by the positron beam characteristics. In this work, the conventional positron sources and their main properties are explored for giving an indication to the challenges that apply during the design of the advanced accelerator concepts. The photon-driven positron sources as the novel approach proposed, primarily for the future linear colliders, are described highlighting their variety and problematic.

Performance evaluation of an RFSoC operating in a 1.25 Tesla magnetic field

Here, the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider is preparing for an upgrade after 2027–2028 to handle higher luminosity and increased background rates. A Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) has been identified as a potential candidate for a common front-end upgrade for subsystems requiring high-speed waveform digitization. The RFSoC's ADC and DAC channels were tested across various magnetic field strengths and a few different field orientations. Power consumption and boot memory functionality were also assessed. Results indicate stable operation with negligible performance degradation, suggesting the RFSoC's viability for high-speed digitization tasks in high magnetic field environments.

Observation of the decays 𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$

We report the first observation of the two-body baryonic decays 𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$ with significances of 7.3⁢𝜎 and 6.2⁢𝜎, respectively, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions are measured to be ℬ⁡(𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$) = (5.74 ± 1.11 ± 0.4⁢2$^{+2.47}_{−1.53}$) ×10 −4 and ℬ⁡(𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$) = (4.83 ± 1.12 ± 0.3⁢7$^{+0.72}_{−0.60}$) ×10 −4 . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the absolute branching fractions of $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ or $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$ decays. The data samples used for this analysis have integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 365 fb −1 , and were collected at the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance by the Belle and Belle II detectors operating at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − colliders, respectively.

Search for a Dark Higgs Boson Produced in Association with Inelastic Dark Matter at the Belle II Experiment

Inelastic dark matter models that have two dark matter particles and a massive dark photon can reproduce the observed relic dark matter density without violating cosmological limits. The mass splitting between the two dark matter particles 𝜒 1 and 𝜒 2 , with 𝑚⁡(𝜒 2 ) >𝑚⁡(𝜒 1 ), is induced by a dark Higgs field and a corresponding dark Higgs boson ℎ′. We present a search for dark matter in events with two vertices, at least one of which must be displaced from the interaction region, and missing energy. Using a 365 fb −1 data sample collected at Belle II, which operates at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider, we observe no evidence for a signal. We set upper limits on the product of the production cross section 𝜎⁡(𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → ℎ′⁡𝜒 1 ⁢𝜒 2 ), and the product of branching fractions ℬ⁡(𝜒 2 → 𝜒 1⁢ 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ) ×ℬ⁡(ℎ′ → 𝑥 + ⁢𝑥 − ), where 𝑥 + ⁢𝑥 − indicates 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − , or 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − , as functions of ℎ′ mass and lifetime at the level of 10 −1 fb. We set model-dependent upper limits on the dark Higgs mixing angle at the level of 10 −5 and on the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter at the level of 10 −3 . This is the first search for dark Higgs bosons in association with inelastic dark matter.

Test of lepton flavor universality with measurements of 𝑅⁡(𝐷 + ) and 𝑅⁡(𝐷* + ) using semileptonic 𝐵 tagging at the Belle II experiment

We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions ℛ⁡(𝐷 (*)+ ) = ℬ⁡($\bar{𝐵}$ 0 → 𝐷 (*)+ ⁢𝜏 −⁢ $\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 )/ℬ⁡($\bar{𝐵}$ 0 → 𝐷 (*)+ ⁢ℓ − $\bar{𝜈}$ ℓ ), where ℓ denotes either an electron or a muon. These ratios test the universality of the charged-current weak interaction. The results are based on a 365 fb −1 data sample collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider, which operates at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance, just above the threshold for $𝐵\bar{𝐵}$ production. Signal candidates are reconstructed by selecting events in which the companion 𝐵 meson from the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) → $𝐵\bar{𝐵}$ decay is identified in semileptonic modes. The 𝜏 lepton is reconstructed via its leptonic decays. We obtain ℛ⁡(𝐷 + ) = 0.418$^{+0.075}_{−0.073}$⁢(stat)$^{+0.049}_{−0.056}$⁢(syst) and ℛ⁡(𝐷 *+ ) = 0.306$^{+0.035}_{−0.033}$⁢(stat)$^{+0.016}_{−0.018⁢}$(syst), which are consistent with world average values. Accounting for the correlation between them, these values differ from the Standard Model expectation by a collective significance of 1.7 standard deviations.

Measurement of the B 0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using hadronic decays reconstructed in 2019–2021 Belle II data

We measure the B0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using B 0 → D(*) – π + decays collected by the Belle II experiment in asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e – collisions produced by the SuperKEKB collider operating at the Υ⁡(4⁢S) resonance. We fit the decay-time distribution of signal decays, where the initial flavor is determined by identifying the flavor of the other B meson in the event. The results, based on 33000 signal decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 190 fb –1 , are τ B 0 = (1.499 ± 0.013 ± 0.008) ps, Δ⁢m d = (0.516 ± 0.008 ± 0.005) ps –1 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world-average values.

We present a measurement of the τ-lepton mass using a sample of about 175 million $e^+$$e^-$ → ${{\tau}}^+{{\tau}}^-$ events collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+$$e^-$ collider at a center-of-mass energy of 10.579GeV. This sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $190$ $\mathrm{fb}$$^{-1}$. This result is the most precise to date.

Measurement of branching fractions and direct C P asymmetries for B → K π and B → π π decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct C P asymmetries of the decays B 0 → K + π − , B + → K + π 0 , B + → K 0 π + , and B 0 → K 0 π 0 , and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct C P asymmetry of the decay B + → π + π 0 and the branching fraction of the decay B 0 → π + π − . The data are collected with the elle II detector from e + e − collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain 387 × 10 6 bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain − 0.03 ± 0.13 ± 0.04 for the sum rule in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations. Evidence for B + → K + ν ν ¯ decays

We search for the rare decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ in a 362 fb − 1 sample of electron-positron collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying B meson in ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal B candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying B meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the B + → K + ν ν ¯ branching fraction of [ 2.7 ± 0.5 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 and [ 1.1 − 0.8 + 0.9 ( stat ) − 0.5 + 0.8 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ to be [ 2.3 ± 0.5 ( stat ) − 0.4 + 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for a μ + μ − resonance in four-muon final states at Belle II

We report on a search for a resonance X decaying to a pair of muons in e + e − → μ + μ − X events in the 0.212 – 9.000 GeV / c 2 mass range, using 178 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of X beyond the standard model: a Z ′ vector boson in the L μ − L τ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV / c 2 , the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

New graph-neural-network flavor tagger for Belle II and measurement of sin 2⁢𝜙 1 in 𝐵 0 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays

We present GFlaT, a new algorithm that uses a graph-neural-network to determine the flavor of neutral 𝐵 mesons produced in ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) decays. It improves previous algorithms by using the information from all charged final-state particles and the relations between them. We evaluate its performance using 𝐵 decays to flavor-specific hadronic final states reconstructed in a 362 fb −1 sample of electron-positron collisions collected at the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We achieve an effective tagging efficiency of (37.40 ± 0.43 ± 0.36%), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, which is 18% better than the previous Belle II algorithm. Demonstrating the algorithm, we use 𝐵 0 →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays to measure the mixing-induced and direct 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation parameters, 𝑆 = (0.724 ± 0.035 ± 0.009) and 𝐶 = (−0.035 ± 0.026 ± 0.029).

Test of lepton flavor universality with a measurement of R ( D * ) using hadronic B tagging at the Belle II experiment

The ratio of branching fractions R ( D * ) = B ( B ¯ → D * τ − ν ¯ τ ) / B ( B ¯ → D * ℓ − ν ¯ ℓ ) , where ℓ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189 fb − 1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Data is collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance, and one B meson in the ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B ¯ → D * τ − ν ¯ τ using leptonic τ decays. The normalization decay, B ¯ → D * ℓ − ν ¯ ℓ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R ( D * ) = 0.262 − 0.039 + 0.041 ( stat ) − 0.032 + 0.035 ( syst ) . This result is consistent with the current world average and with Standard Model predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the e + e − → π + π − π 0 cross section in the energy range 0.62–3.50 GeV at Belle II

We report a measurement of the e + e − → π + π − π 0 cross section in the energy range from 0.62 to 3.50 GeV using an initial-state radiation technique. We use an e + e − data sample corresponding to 191 fb − 1 of integrated luminosity, collected at a center-of-mass energy at or near the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. Signal yields are extracted by fitting the two-photon mass distribution in e + e − → π + π − π 0 γ events, which involve a π 0 → γ γ decay and an energetic photon radiated from the initial state. Signal efficiency corrections with an accuracy of 1.6% are obtained from several control data samples. The uncertainty on the cross section at the ω and ϕ resonances is dominated by the systematic uncertainty of 2.2%. The resulting cross sections in the 0.62–1.80 GeV energy range yield a μ 3 π = [ 48.91 ± 0.23 ( stat ) ± 1.07 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 10 for the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This result differs by 2.5 standard deviations from the most precise current determination. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
