Hanle-effect mean-life measurements on aligned fast ions.

Mean lives of several levels of the first two ionized states of argon were obtained by Hanle-effect measurements on the fast-beam particles, following coherent alignment of the magnetic substates by beam-foil interaction. The g factors of the levels were obtained by observation of quantum beats. Mean lives are compared with results of the usual beam-foil mean-life measurement technique. We show that the Hanle effect can sometimes clarify beam-foil results.

Faults on Skylab imagery of the Salton Trough area, Southern California

The author has identified the following significant results. Large segments of the major high angle faults in the Salton Trough area are readily identifiable in Skylab images. Along active faults, distinctive topographic features such as scarps and offset drainage, and vegetation differences due to ground water blockage in alluvium are visible. Other fault-controlled features along inactive as well as active faults visible in Skylab photography include straight mountain fronts, linear valleys, and lithologic differences producing contrasting tone, color or texture. A northwestern extension of a fault in the San Andreas set, is postulated by the regional alignment of possible fault-controlled features. The suspected fault is covered by Holocene deposits, principally windblown sand. A northwest trending tonal change in cultivated fields across Mexicali Valley is visible on Skylab photos. Surface evidence for faulting was not observed; however, the linear may be caused by differences in soil conditions along an extension of a segment of the San Jacinto fault zone. No evidence of faulting could be found along linears which appear as possible extensions of the Substation and Victory Pass faults, demonstrating that the interpretation of linears as faults in small scale photography must be corroborated by field investigations.

Analytical study of electrical disconnect system for use on manned and unmanned missions

The program to survey existing electrical connector availability, and establish an optimum connector design for maintainable spacecraft substation interfaces is reported. Functional and operational requirements are given along with the results of the documentation survey, which disclosed that the MSFC series connectors have the preferred features of current connector technology. Optimum design concepts for EVA tasks, modules serviced by manipulators, and for manipulators independent of other servicing units are presented. It is concluded that separate connector designs are required for spacecraft replaceable modules, and for crewman EVA.

Measurement of the fundamental vibration-rotation spectrum of ClO

The ClO fundamental absorption band near 850/cm is observed, with a tunable PbSnTe diode laser used as a source of monochromatic radiation. The chlorine monoxide concentration in the absorption tube was measured indirectly via a UV transmission technique. Frequencies and assignments for the ClO lines, and band centers and rotational constants for the ClO fundamental vibration, are tabulated. Diatomic vibration-rotation transitions within and between electronic substates are discussed. The tunable diode laser is valuable for studying the hyperfine structure. The IR spectroscopic technique is developed in order to monitor chlorine monoxide concentration in the stratosphere, since the short-lived ClO is a crucial intermediate participant in reactions involving destruction of stratospheric ozone.

Development of a plasma sprayed ceramic gas path seal for high pressure turbine application

Development of the plasma sprayed graded, layered ZRO2/CoCrAlY seal system for gas turbine engine blade tip seal applications up to 1589 K (2400 F) surface temperature was continued. The effect of changing ZRO2/CoCrAlY ratios in the intermediate layers on thermal stresses was evaluated analytically with the goal of identifying the materials combinations which would minimize thermal stresses in the seal system. Three methods of inducing compressive residual stresses in the sprayed seal materials to offset tensile thermal stresses were analyzed. The most promising method, thermal prestraining, was selected based upon potential, feasibility and complexity considerations. The plasma spray equipment was modified to heat, control and monitor the substrate temperature during spraying. Specimens were fabricated and experimentally evaluated to: (1) substantiate the capability of the thermal prestrain method to develop compressive residual stresses in the sprayed structure and (2) define the effect of spraying on a heated substate on abradability, erosion and thermal shock characteristics of the seal system. Thermal stress analysis, including residual stresses and material properties variations, was performed and correlated with thermal shock test results. Seal system performance was assessed and recommendations for further development were made.

Appropriateness in using LANDSAT in development energy related data bases

The use of automated classification systems in the field of resource management and resource inventory is discussed. Applications of LANDSAT classification are outlined and include: energy load forecasting based upon land use inventories and change analysis, impact analysis of activities related to energy extraction, capability/suitability mapping in support of generation and substation location and transmission line routing, and assessment of solar energy potential in a highly urbanized setting where land values are high. It is found that the use of LANDSAT data is adequate for general inventories where few data categories are required, where resolution of data to around 150 acres minimum is required, and where no other complete imagery set can be obtained.

High performance solar Stirling system

A full-scale Dish-Stirling system experiment, at a power level of 25 kWe, has been tested during 1981 on the Test Bed Concentrator No. 2 at the Parabolic Dish Test Site, Edwards, CA. Test components, designed and developed primarily by industrial contractors for the Department of Energy, include an advanced Stirling engine driving an induction alternator, a directly-coupled solar receiver with a natural gas combustor for hybrid operation and a breadboard control system based on a programmable controller and standard utility substation components. The experiment demonstrated practicality of the solar Stirling application and high system performance into a utility grid. This paper describes the design and its functions, and the test results obtained.

On redistribution and the equations for radiative transfer

The derivation of the equations of statistical equilibrium are outlined, starting from the quantum density-matrix equations, drawing particular attention to the approximations and assumptions used in the development of tractable expressions. Then, using the quantum-fluctuation-regression theorem, emission and absorption coefficients are obtained for multilevel atomic systems which are nondegenerate except for m-substates. These coefficients are valid to first order in the incident intensity. Possible extensions to higher intensity broadband incoherent fields are suggested.

Chittenden County, Vermont land cover project

The testing of LANDSAT applicability to urban and agricultural land use analysis at the substate level is described. It is concluded that the LANDSAT system has a place in Vermont and places like it, but that the present operation is inadequate and the need for technology transfer and excellent communication between the producers and users is fundamental to the future of the system and for the realization of benefit from the investment.

Holographic fabrication of gratings in metal substrates

A program for investigating the grain enlargement resulting from the laser recrystallization of a thin gallium arsenide film on a patterned substrate, a technique known as graphoepitaxy was evaluated. More specifically, the effects of recrystallizing an uncapped gallium arsenide film using a continuous wave neodymium YAG laser operating at 1.06 microns were studied. In an effort to minimize arsenic loss from the film, the specimens were held in an arsine atmosphere during recrystallization. Two methods for fabricating patterned substrates were developed, one using reactive ion etching of a molybdenum film on both sapphire and silicon substates and another by preferential wet etching of a silicon substrate onto which a film of molybdenum was subsequently deposited.

Classification and area estimation of land covers in Kansas using ground-gathered and LANDSAT digital data

Ground-gathered data and LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) digital data from 1981 were analyzed to produce a classification of Kansas land areas into specific types called land covers. The land covers included rangeland, forest, residential, commercial/industrial, and various types of water. The analysis produced two outputs: acreage estimates with measures of precision, and map-type or photo products of the classification which can be overlaid on maps at specific scales. State-level acreage estimates were obtained and substate-level land cover classification overlays and estimates were generated for selected geographical areas. These products were found to be of potential use in managing land and water resources.

The role of robotics in space system operations

The role of automation and robotics in support of man's activities in space is discussed, with emphasis given to satellite servicing functions on board the NASA Space Station (SS) or at remote locations. Consideration is given to four satellite servicing mission scenarios, including: low-earth-orbit (LEO) servicing of satellite in situ or on the Space Station following orbital transfer by means of an Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV); in situ servicing of a free-flying coorbiting materials processing platform; repair/refurbishment of Space Station payloads of substations; an in situ servicing of geostationary satellites by means of an Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV). The potential applications of three different automation technologies are examined, including: teleoperation; robotics; and artificial intelligence. Consideration is also given to the potential applications of the Space Station data system in support of servicing activities. A list of the more common terms of automation technology is provided.

Electron-impact ionization of laser-excited Ba-138 (... 5p6 6s 6p) and Ba-138 (... 5p6 6s 5d) atoms

Electron-impact ionization cross sections for laser-excited Ba-138 (... 5p6 6s 6p; 1P1, M = - 1) and cascade-populated Ba-138 (... 5p6 6s 5d; 1D + 3D) atoms were measured in the threshold to 10 eV energy range. The peak cross sections for the excited species are about a factor of 2 larger than that for ground-state Ba. In addition, it was demonstrated that ionization from individual magnetic substates of various hyperfine levels can be studied. The ionization cross sections in the case of Ba-138 (1P1) were found to be equal for the M = 0 and for the M = + or - 1 sublevels within the experimental error limit.

C-type transitions in methyl formate

Based on previously determined spectral constants for methyl formate in its ground torsional degenerate substate, the frequencies and intensities of forbidden c-type transitions in this molecule, which is represented by a large number of lines in OMC-1, are calculated along with other 'forbidden' transitions labeled x-type. The stronger c-type transitions below 300 GHz with angular momentum quantum number of 30 or less and with upper state rotational energy of 350/cm or less are included in a list of spectral frequencies presented in this paper. Because the c-type transitions borrow intensity from the b-type transitions, the intensities of strongly affected b-type spectra are recalculated and presented.
