Source Contributions to Fine Particulate Matter and Attributable Mortality in India and the Surrounding Region

Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is a leading mortality risk factor in India and the surrounding region of South Asia. This study evaluates the contribution of emission sectors and fuels to PM 2.5 mass for 29 states in India and 6 surrounding countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar) by combining source-specific emission estimates, stretched grid simulations from a chemical transport model, high resolution hybrid PM 2.5 , and disease-specific mortality estimates. We find that 1.02 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.78-1.26) million deaths in South Asia attributable to ambient PM 2.5 in 2019 were primarily from three leading sectors: residential combustion (28%), industry (15%), and power generation (12%). Solid biofuel is the leading combustible fuel contributing to the PM 2.5 -attributable mortality (31%), followed by coal (17%), and oil and gas (14%). State-level analyses reveal higher residential combustion contributions (35%-39%) in states (Delhi, Uttar-Pradesh, Haryana) with high ambient PM 2.5 (>95 µg/m 3 ). The combined mortality burden associated with residential combustion (ambient) and household air pollution (HAP) in India is 0.72 million (95% CI:0.54-0.89) (68% attributable to HAP, 32% attributable to residential combustion). Our results illustrate the potential to reduce PM 2.5 mass and improve population health by reducing emissions from traditional energy sources across multiple sources in South Asia.

New K-feldspar Pb isotope results for Mesozoic arc crust in the Pacific Northwest, U.S.A. and Canada: comparison with the Mojave-Salinia province of southern California and Implications for Baja-BC

Measurements of lead isotopic compositions in detrital K-feldspar have been increasingly used as a tool to assess sediment provenance. We compiled a database of previously published Pb isotope data from 700 bedrock K-feldspar samples and 1,423 age-corrected bedrock whole rock samples from western North American igneous and metamorphic bodies. Additionally, we report 66 new K-feldspar Pb isotope data for plutons throughout the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and British Columbia. Results show that the Pb isotope values of plutonic K-feldspar depend on the isotopically juvenile or evolved nature of underlying crust. Samples obtained from the mid Cretaceous – mid Eocene Coast Plutonic Complex, North Cascades, and Intermontane superterrane that occur west of the initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (Sri) = 0.706 isopleth exhibit a highly restricted 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb values centred upon 0.83 and 2.03, respectively. Conversely, rocks overlying older continental crust further east such as the Middle Jurassic – Late Cretaceous Omineca crystalline belt, Idaho batholith, and Boulder Batholith exhibit far greater variation of Pb isotope values that parallel the 100 Ma isochron calculated from a two-stage Pb evolution model. We demonstrate that Pb isotopic results from the Idaho and Boulder Batholith region can be used to define distinctive subregions for Pb isotopic provenance analysis, and compare these signatures to the Mojave-Salinian batholith of southern California and western Arizona, as these two areas have previously been proposed as source regions for extraregional sediment that was deposited within the Nanaimo Basin during the Campanian – Maastrichtian. Future Pb isotopic analysis of detrital K-feldspar from the Nanaimo Basin of southwestern British Columbia may effectively distinguish between potential extraregional sources separated by thousands of kilometres.

The Globally Coherent Pattern of Autumn Monsoon Precipitation

Over most tropical land areas, the annual peak in precipitation occurs during summer, associated with the local monsoon circulation. However, in some coastal regions in the tropics the bulk of annual precipitation occurs in autumn, after the low-level summer monsoon westerlies have abated. Examples include the Nordeste region of Brazil, southeastern India and Sri Lanka, and coastal Tanzania. Unlike equatorial regions, they receive little rainfall during local spring. Such regions are present along the eastern coasts of nearly all continents, suggesting that they comprise a coherent yet previously unrecognized global phenomenon. In this study, we identify eight tropical locations that experience an “autumn monsoon” and show that this unusual seasonal cycle is generated by similar mechanisms in all of these. When these regions receive their peak rainfall, they lie poleward of the ITCZ in easterly low-level winds. The spatial structure of precipitation in these regions can be explained by their placement to the east of mountain ranges that organize moist convection on their windward sides. However, orographic forcing alone cannot explain their unique seasonal cycle: despite similarities in wind direction, surface humidity, and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) between autumn and spring, these regions receive significantly more rainfall in autumn than in spring. Here, we show that this is due to differences in the large-scale atmospheric stability between the equinoctial seasons, which can be captured by a relative SST metric and is influenced by SSTs in the remote eastern upwelling zones of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Mesh Failure Prediction Using Deep Learning Techniques

The goal of this joint effort between SRI and LLNL has been to investigate the use of state-of-the-art deep learning architectures to effectively explore the correlations between a set of mesh zone attributes and manifestations of failure in a given mesh simulation and draw useful conclusions towards a practical failure detection system. Each zone attribute is a scalar feature that is recorded separately for each zone during simulation, resulting in a multivariate time series signal for each zone. Currently, these features are used to manually decide where to apply manual relaxations so that simulations run without any failures. Our long-term vision is to build a machine learning system that is capable of reliably detecting upcoming failures and is able to apply finer-grained targeted relaxations automatically to relevant zones to avoid an expected failure.

Microcam: A Low Power and Privacy Preserving Multi-modal Platform for Occupancy Detection (Final Report)

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) consumes a significant portion of the energy used in buildings. Much of this is wasted energy, used when buildings are either not occupied at all, or occupied well under their maximum design conditions. This project has focused on residential occupancy detection to autonomously control HVAC systems and save energy. Limitations of existing occupancy sensors include one or more of the following: (i) they employ sensors or algorithms that are not able to detect stationary occupants; (ii) they cannot classify the source of the motion (such as a pet); (iii) depending on the camera resolution and employed algorithms, they do not allow for embedded or onboard computation, and require external or cloud-based processing; (iv) many algorithms developed for camera-based systems are sensitive to lighting changes, and thus prone to missed detections or false alarms; (v) Most existing systems depend on adjustment of settings for different scenarios, complicating self-commissioning; (vi) they cannot provide high enough accuracy; (vii) they are costly; (viii) they are not battery-powered, thus limiting ease of use and installation. In this project, Syracuse University and its partner SRI have developed a low-cost, high accuracy, standalone residential occupancy sensing platform, referred to as the MicroCam, to address all of the aforementioned challenges. MicroCam can operate on typical alkaline batteries without relying on the “cloud” or external computing resources, and consists of low-power, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based, IoT platforms. Each platform has multi-modal sensors and can process motion, audio and video data, and send binary occupancy result to a lead platform. All sensor data is processed locally on platforms, and the only transmitted data is the binary occupancy state. In addition, preliminary work has been done on images wherein occupants are not discernable. Thus, MicroCam is a standalone solution preserving privacy of the occupants.

A Comprehensive Economic Coal Transition in South Asia

Many countries are considering accelerating their coal transition. A coal transition refers to an energy sector’s shift from a reliance on coal toward an energy mix largely based on cleaner fuels and renewable energy sources. Such a transition is not just related to greenhouse gas emissions, but also encompasses a range of benefits, recognizing that global energy costs and options are changing. Since 2015, proposed new coal power capacity has dropped by three-quarters globally, leaving only a few countries that develop coal-fired power plants at scale (Littlecott et al., 2021). Historic steps were taken at the United Nations Climate Change 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, as countries pledged to stop new coal builds, end international coal financing, phase down and phase out unabated coal use, and transition to clean energy. In South Asia, there have been several indicators suggesting that countries may be open to moving toward a coal transition. For example, the number of coal power plants under development across South Asia has decreased by 87% since 2015 (Littlecott et al., 2021). However, the challenges of assuring a just transition are substantial. Because coal plays a critical role in the energy and economic systems in South Asia, especially India, moving away from coal means realizing a broader country-wide economic and social transition. A comprehensive, integrated transition strategy for each state is thus needed urgently. This report briefly reviews the current trends and policies on coal in South Asian countries, develops a framework for a comprehensive economic coal transition, and assesses the opportunities and challenges of the transition in key countries. Several important findings emerge from the analysis. First, a coal transition can support overall economic growth and stability. Financial advantages to a well-planned coal transition include mitigating the risk of stranded assets and taking advantage of low-cost renewables. As a global coal transition proceeds, funds are being diverted from new unabated coal power plants, and utilization rates are declining. The likelihood that coal assets will become stranded is increasing, and the potential for future losses therefore increases as well. Second, coal imports in South Asia are rising. Of the coal consumed in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, 32% is imported; this number increases to 94% when excluding India (International Energy Agency [IEA], 2021d). This illustrates a serious energy security risk. One example is the recent increase in coal prices in South Asia, to be discussed in Section 2.2.1. A diverse energy portfolio that incorporates local renewable energy can provide resilience in the face of changing commodity prices and availability. Third, the social benefits of a coal transition include positive health impacts and broader economic improvements in job creation, although assuring a just transition may be a challenge. Phasing out or phasing down coal can significantly reduce air pollutant emissions and therefore minimize associated premature mortality and improve life expectancy. Additional societal benefits of a coal transition include the high economy-wide potential for job creation, although it creates challenges in terms of reintegration and resettlement for coal miners and their communities.

Modeling and Policy Pathways to Decarbonize South Asia’s Industrial Sector

The industrial sector is responsible for one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and industrial decarbonization will be an essential component of limiting emissions and mitigating climate change (Rissman et al., 2020). This holds true for South Asian countries as they work toward their stated commitments to reducing emissions in the coming years. India has pledged to reduce the emissions intensity of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 33–35% by 2030 (Government of India, 2016) and announced at COP26 a target of reaching net-zero CO 2 emissions by 2070, a goal that will require rapid decarbonization of energy-intensive industries (WEF, 2021). Bangladesh’s Nationally Determined Contributions include a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 6.73% to 15.12% by 2030 (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, 2021). While these Nationally Determined Contributions do not explicitly target emissions reductions in industry, Bangladesh’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) Master Plan highlights industry as an important sector for EE&C (Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority, 2015). Sri Lanka has pledged carbon neutrality by 2050, including a reduction in industrial greenhouse gas emissions (Ministry of Environment, 2021). Nepal’s commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 includes plans to establish guidelines and technology transitions facilitating industrial decarbonization (Government of Nepal, 2020).

Mixed-Salt Based Transformational Solvent Technology for CO 2 Capture

SRI International developed a novel, water-lean, mixed-salt-based transformational solvent technology under a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)/National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)-funded project. This advanced mixed-salt process (A-MSP) can be operated with high cyclic CO 2 loading, and the solution can be regenerated with greater than 10 bar CO 2 pressure at temperatures less than 120°C. The team has created a process model and performed a techno-economic evaluation (TEA) to identify development pathways for technology advancement. The A-MSP will provide a reduction in the CO 2 capture cost and energy penalties and will have the potential for accelerated scale-up to meet the DOE’s new target of <30/tonne-CO 2 by 2030 for coal-fired power plant applications.

Scalable Thin Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Light Sheet Platform

The goal of the Scalable Thin Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Light Sheet Platform project is to derisk the manufacturing scalability for a high chip count heterogeneous smart lighting platform, with the potential to enable significant energy savings through dynamic directional light control and custom. Specifically, the project derisks the scalability of a disruptive new computer controlled microassembly fabrication process SRI International is developing, to address fundamental cost barriers to mass production of high chip count systems. This is key for enabling mass adoption and thus maximum societal energy savings impact. The LED light sheet technology is a smart illumination platform that can be applied to lighting, signage, and display. It has features and a form factor similar to bendable or conformal OLED light sheets but uses more efficient LEDs with a remote phosphor layer that is very close to the LED to deliver a luminous efficacy that exceeds 125 lumen/Watt and enable > 50% Lighting Application Efficiency (LAE) energy savings. During Budget Period 1 (BP1), all of the BP1 milestones were successfully completed: (M2.0.1) Design demonstrator details that will meet the final project goals, (M6.1.1) Show lighting output model can predict illuminance, spatial, spectral distribution for specific light-sheet designs and use case, (M3.2.1) Automated loading supports 200 chip arrays, and (M3.3.1) Finish first interconnect process run for 200 chip array. The BP1 Go/No-Go Decision Point (G/NG 1) 200 chip demonstrator sample was in the process of final assembly and test at the end of BP1 on December 31, 2023. The objective was successfully achieved on January 16, 2024, when a wired 200-chip sample underwent confirmation testing that demonstrated a 93.75% first pass electrical yield that successfully exceeded the 75% first-pass electrical yield BP1 G/NG requirement. In addition, all 93.75% of the sample devices lit up, further demonstrating the ability to assemble and transfer small LED chips without damaging their functionality.

Filament extension atomizers: A study of integration potential into spray dryers for high-viscosity and non-Newtonian fluids

Filament extension atomizers (FEAs) are an emerging class of spray nozzles designed to atomize high-viscosity and non-Newtonian fluids that are challenging for conventional pressure or two-fluid nozzles. In this study, we investigate the influence of roller geometry, surface velocity, roller material, and fluid rheology on the atomization performance of FEA systems using concentrated whey protein suspensions (50–70 wt. %). Extensional and shear rheology experiments, along with high-speed imaging and particle image velocimetry, reveal that filament breakup dynamics are governed by competition between inertial, capillary, and viscoelastic stresses. High roller rotational velocity leads to narrower spray cones, contradicting rheology experiments and suggests a significant inertial contribution to filament breakup. Smaller rollers operating at the same rotational velocity led to broader spray cones consistent with expectations. An FEA nozzle was integrated into a conventional dryer producing particles in the 100 μm range. Results suggest that FEA technology enables atomization of highly viscous fluids at industrially relevant spray cone angles similar to those generated by pressure nozzles, offering a pathway to improve energy efficiency in spray drying by enabling higher solids loading feedstocks. Furthermore, these insights provide critical guidance for optimizing FEA nozzle designs and process parameters across a range of applications.

MjCyc: Rediscovering the pathway-genome landscape of the first sequenced archaeon, Methanocaldococcus (Methanococcus) jannaschii

The genome of Methanocaldococcus (Methanococcus) jannaschii DSM 2661 was the first Archaeal genome to be sequenced in 1996. Subsequent sequence-based annotation cycles led to its first metabolic reconstruction in 2005. Leveraging new experimental results and function assignments, we have now re-annotated M. jannaschii, creating an updated resource with novel information and testable predictions in a pathway-genome database available at BioCyc.org. This reannotation effort has resulted in 652 function assignments with enzyme roles, accounting for a third of the total protein-coding entries for this genome. The updated resource includes 883 reactions, 540 enzymes, and 142 individual pathways. Despite notable progress in computational genomics, more than a third of the genome remains functionally uncharacterized. The publicly available MjCyc pathway-genome database holds great potential for the wider community to conduct research on the biology of methanogenic Archaea.

CTRL-STEER: Closed-Loop Neuron Activation Control in Vision-Language-Action Models

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models enable test-time behavioral steering via neuron-level interventions, but existing methods use fixed strengths and operate in open loop. This static modulation fails under evolving task dynamics, leading to overcorrection, oscillations, and reduced task success—especially for temporal attributes like speed. We propose CTRL-STEER, a control-theoretic framework that casts activation steering as closed-loop feedback with adaptive, time-varying interventions. Instead of assuming neurons encode temporal concepts, we steer along motion-aligned residual directions and regulate intervention magnitude via feedback. We instantiate this with both PID and reinforcement learning controllers that jointly optimize concept adherence and task success. Experiments on fine-tuned OpenVLA policies across four LIBERO suites show improved stability and a better steering–success trade-off over fixed-coefficient baselines, without retraining the base model.

Investigating PVC polymer–plasticizer interactions with atomistic MD simulations and potential of mean force calculations

For this work, atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with potential of mean force (PMF) calculations were employed to investigate the interactions between PVC polymer chains containing 6–20 repeating units and various plasticizers, with the goal of identifying potential replacements for the toxic plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) used in blood bags. The selected plasticizers belong to various chemical families, such as orthophthalates, citrates, adipates, and the terephthalate DEHT. Both the polymer and the plasticizers lack ionizable groups, and their interactions are primarily governed by van der Waals and electrostatic forces. A model correlating PMF profiles with interaction forces was developed and validated across polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polymers of different lengths and all investigated plasticizers. This model provides insight into how structural variations in plasticizers influence their respective PMF values. The study ranks the investigated plasticizers based on binding affinity, identifying TOTM (tris(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate, TEHTM), BTHC (butyryl trihexyl citrate, Citroflex B-6), ATHC (acetyl trihexyl citrate, Citroflex A-6, CA-6), and DEHT (bis(2-ethylhexyl)terephthalate, DOTP/DEHTP) as promising alternatives for further investigation. This comprehensive study encompasses PVC polymers of four different lengths and 14 plasticizers, with all data averaged over 30 independent simulations. The approach provides a deeper understanding of molecular interactions, enabling the tailoring of polymer–plasticizer systems for diverse applications, including extractables and leachables, with relevance spanning materials science to biomedical engineering, and also serves as a basis for developing coarse-grained simulation protocols. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for designing safer and more efficient plasticizer substitutes and is well supported by other studies.

A Blockchain Based Co-Simulation Framework for Integrating DERs to Wholesale Electricity Markets

As the number of distributed energy resources (DERs) continue to increase across energy-delivery systems, there remains a need for integrating their capabilities into traditional grid operations. In this paper, a blockchain-based solution is proposed to facilitate FERC's Order No. 2222 implementations. The presented use-case enables small-scale DERs to participate in wholesale market operations through DER aggregators, while also enabling local distribution system operators to enforce distribution system constraints in a secure and traceable manner. The presented use case is built around the Unified Testing Platform (UTP) being developed as a part of the Blockchain for Optimized Security and Energy Management (BLOSEM) project. This is a multi-lab effort intended to simplify the deployment of blockchain-powered grid solutions by enabling the integration of simulation tools, and blockchain technologies through the use of system-agnostic interfaces that provide a modular, interoperable, and reusable connectivity layer.

Suppressing Co-Crystallization of Halogenated Non-Fullerene Acceptors for Thermally Stable Ternary Solar Cells

While photovoltaic blends based on non-fullerene acceptors are touted for their thermal stability, this type of acceptor tends to crystallize, which can result in a gradual decrease in photovoltaic performance and affects the reproducibility of the devices. Two halogenated indacenodithienothiophene-based acceptors that readily co-crystallize upon mixing are studied, which indicates that the use of an acceptor mixture alone does not guarantee the formation of a disordered mixture. The addition of the donor polymer to the acceptor mixture readily suppresses the crystallization, which results in a fine-grained ternary blend with nanometer-sized domains that do not coarsen due to a high T g ≈ 200 °C. As a result, annealing at temperatures of up to 170 °C does not markedly affect the photovoltaic performance of ternary devices, in contrast to binary devices that suffer from acceptor crystallization in the active layer. The results indicate that the ternary approach enables the use of high-temperature processing protocols, which are needed for upscaling and high-throughput fabrication of organic solar cells. Further, ternary devices display a stable photovoltaic performance at 130 °C for at least 205 h, which indicates that the use of acceptor mixtures allows to fabricate devices with excellent thermal stability.
