A VLBA-uGMRT search for candidate binary black holes: study of six X-shaped radio galaxies with double-peaked emission lines

ABSTRACT Identifying methods to discover dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) has proven to be challenging. Several indirect tracers have been explored in the literature, including X/S-shaped radio morphologies and double-peaked (DP) emission lines in the optical spectra. However, the detection rates of confirmed dual AGN candidates from the individual methods remain extremely small. We search for binary black holes (BBH) in a sample of six sources that exhibit both X-shaped radio morphology and DP emission lines using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Three out of the six sources show dual VLBA compact components, making them strong candidates for BBH sources. In addition, we present deep uGMRT images revealing the exquisite details of the X-shaped wings in three sources. We present a detailed precession modeling analysis of these sources. The black hole separations estimated from the simplistic geodetic precession model are incompatible with those estimated from emission line offsets and the VLBA separations. However, precession induced by a non-coplanar secondary black hole is a feasible mechanism for explaining the observed X-shaped radio morphologies and the black hole separations estimated from other methods. The black hole separations estimated from the double-peaked emission lines agree well with the VLBA compact component separations. Future multifrequency VLBA observations will be critical in ruling out or confirming the BBH scenario in the three galaxies with dual component detections.

Ground-state phase diagram and superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders

Here, we have studied the ground state properties of Hubbard model on long six-leg square cylinders with doped hole concentration per site 5.55%≤δ≤12.5% using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping t'. In the positive t' side, we find a robust d-wave superconducting (SC) phase characterized by coexisting quasi-long-range SC and charge density wave (CDW) correlations. Without t' the ground state forms an insulating stripe phase with long-range CDW order but short-range spin-spin and SC correlations. In stark contrast to four-leg cylinders, our results show that the lightly doped Hubbard model on six-leg cylinders remains insulating in the negative t' side where the SC correlations decay exponentially with short correlation lengths. In the larger negative t' side, the doped holes form a novel holon Wigner crystal with one doped hole per emergent unit cell and short-range spin-spin correlations.

Six-photon resonant scattering of collinear laser pulses in plasma

To achieve the highest possible laser intensities with the least laser energy, shorter-wavelengths lasers are advantaged if they can be focused to spots of a few laser wavelengths and durations of several laser periods. However, the top laser pulse energies available nowadays are megajoules at near-optical wavelengths and millijoules at shorter wavelengths. Thus, to produce the highest laser intensities, what is required is an efficient spectral transfer of the huge near-optical energies to shorter wavelengths. It is proposed here that the desired spectral transfer could occur via resonant photon interactions associated with nonlinearity of mildly relativistic motions of plasma electrons in intense laser fields, specifically via the six-photon resonant scattering of collinear laser pulses in plasma. As a result, the six-photon interaction can, in fact, be the dominant resonant photon interaction to achieve collinear frequency up-conversion.

Postfault Operation of Three-Level Inverter Driven Six-Phase PMSM With Enhanced Torque–Speed Region

This article presents an open-switch postfault operational technique with enhanced torque–speed region for three-level (3L) active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter-driven symmetrical six-phase (SSP) permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). Maximum torque (MT), minimum loss (ML), and single three-phase (STP) operations are commonly used for the postfault operations of six-phase drives. The maximum possible torque and speed in these operations are generally limited by voltage, current ratings, and the neutral point configuration of the motor. To enhance the postfault torque and speed operating region, the torque and speed limits in different postfault operational techniques are determined based on the voltage, current constraints, and neutral point configuration of the SSP-PMSM. In this work, a unified postfault operation is proposed that increases the postfault operational limits by combining MT, ML, and STP operations and modifying the neutral point configuration of the SSP-PMSM. In addition, a technique is also presented that modifies the pulsewidth modulation technique to enable full torque operation below 0.5 p.u. speed. The proposed postfault operational technique enables full-speed (1 p.u.) operation by operating in STP mode and full torque operation (1 p.u.) below 0.5 p.u. speed. Furthermore, the postfault operational technique is experimentally validated using a Gallium Nitride (GaN) device-based3L-ANPC inverter-driven SSP-PMSM.

Plant and shrub tissue decompositions in changing environments after six-years in a Peatland ecosystem

SPRUCE, Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments, is a ten-year long ecosystem manipulation that tests the responses of a high-carbon peatland ecosystem to warming and elevated CO2. This experiment is located a Northern Minnesota peatland. Here we studied how plant tissue decomposition is affected by the climate treatments at SPRUCE. Six different litter types were placed into mesh bags and deployed into the peatland. The samples were then removed after six years, and we analyzed those samples in the laboratory. Analysis of these samples consisted of removing foreign growth, drying each sample, weighing each litter bag, grinding into a fine powder, and finally sending each sample off for phosphorus, carbon, and nitrogen analysis. Although we expected to observe effects of warming on decomposition rates, with faster decomposition in the warmer treatments, we only observed faster decomposition in the warmer plots in a few litter types.

Modeling Material Interfaces with the Six-Equation Model in FLEXO

FLEXO is a multiphysics code developed at Sandia National Laboratories for predictive simulation of pulsed power target physics with extended magnetohydrodynamics modeling. Given this application space, FLEXO must be able to perform high-fidelity simulations of pulsed-power systems that include multiple materials. This work presents the augmentation of FLEXO with a six-equation model for multimaterial flow. We design and analyze discretizations of the six-equation model, emphasizing desirable properties for robust multimaterial simulation. We also present solution limiting, bounds preservation, and pressure equilibration/relaxation techniques that enhance the robustness of the overall multimaterial scheme. We present a suite of test problems to document these new capabilities of the FLEXO code.

Comprehensive Economic Impacts ofWild Pigs on Producers of Six Crops in the South-Eastern US and California

Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) cause damage to agricultural crops in their native range as well as in the portions of the globe where they have been introduced. In the US, states with the highest introduced wild pig populations are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. The present study summarizes the first survey-based effort to value the full extent of wild pig damage to producers of six crops in these eleven US states. The survey was distributed by the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service in the summer of 2022 to a sample of 11,495 producers of corn (Zea mays), soybeans (Glycine max), wheat (Triticum spp.), rice (Oryza sativa), peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) in these 11 states. Our findings suggest that the economic burden of wild pigs on producers of these crops is substantial and not limited to the direct and most identifiable categories of crop damage (i.e., production value lost due to depredation, trampling and rooting). We estimate that the annual cost to producers of these six crops in the surveyed states in 2021 was almost USD 700 million.

MIRC-X: A Highly Sensitive Six-telescope Interferometric Imager at the CHARA Array

Michigan InfraRed Combiner-eXeter (MIRC-X) is a new highly sensitive six-telescope interferometric imager installed at the CHARA Array that provides an angular resolution equivalent of up to a 330 m diameter baseline telescope in J- and H-band wavelengths ((λ/(2B))∼0.6 mas). We upgraded the original Michigan InfraRed Combiner (MIRC) instrument to improve sensitivity and wavelength coverage in two phases. First, a revolutionary sub-electron noise and fast-frame-rate C-RED ONE camera based on an SAPHIRA detector was installed. Second, a new-generation beam combiner was designed and commissioned to (i) maximize sensitivity, (ii) extend the wavelength coverage to J band, and (iii) enable polarization observations. A low-latency and fast-frame-rate control software enables high-efficiency observations and fringe tracking for the forthcoming instruments of the CHARA Array. Since mid-2017, MIRC-X has been offered to the community and has demonstrated best-case H-band sensitivity down to 8.2 correlated magnitude. MIRC-X uses single-mode fibers to coherently combine the light from six telescopes simultaneously with an image-plane combination scheme and delivers a visibility precision better than 1%, and closure phase precision better than 1°. MIRC-X aims at (i) imaging protoplanetary disks, (ii) detecting exoplanets with precise astrometry, and (iii) imaging stellar surfaces and starspots at an unprecedented angular resolution in the near-infrared. In this paper, we present the instrument design, installation, operation, and on-sky results, and demonstrate the imaging capability of MIRC-X on the binary system ι Peg. The purpose of this paper is to provide a solid reference for studies based on MIRC-X data and to inspire future instruments in optical interferometry.

Photometric Study and Absolute Parameter Estimation of Six Totally Eclipsing Contact Binaries

High precision CCD observations of six totally eclipsing contact binaries were presented and analyzed. It is found that only one target is an A-type contact binary (V429 Cam), while the others are W-type contact ones. By analyzing the times of light minima, we discovered that two of them exhibit secular period increase while three manifest long-term period decrease. For V1033 Her, a cyclic variation superimposed on the long-term increase was discovered. By comparing the Gaia distances with those calculated by the absolute parameters of 173 contact binaries, we found that the Gaia distance can be applied to estimate the absolute parameters for most contact binaries. The absolute parameters of our six targets were estimated using their Gaia distances. The evolutionary status of contact binaries was studied, and we found that the A- and W-subtype contact binaries may have different formation channels. The relationship between the spectroscopic and photometric mass ratios for 101 contact binaries was presented. It was discovered that the photometric mass ratios are in good agreement with the spectroscopic ones for almost all of the totally eclipsing systems, which is corresponding to the results derived by Pribulla et al. and Terrell & Wilson.

Concentration-Discharge Relationships in the Six Largest Arctic Rivers, 2003-2019

This dataset provides the results of the analysis of the relationship of dissolved analyte concentrations and river discharges in the six largest Arctic rivers across the global panarctic region (see Figure 1 in documentation file *.pdf). Long-term measurements of dissolved analyte concentrations and river discharge have been collected for each of the Kolyma, Lena, Mackenzie, Ob, Yenisey, and Yukon rivers by the Arctic Great Rivers Observatory (ArcticGRO) project from ~2003-present (Shiklomanov, 2021). The relationship of dissolved analyte concentrations and discharges in each river was characterized by statistical analysis of the slope of the log(concentration) vs log(discharge) (b), the coefficient of variation ratio (CVc/CVq), the 2.5% and 97.5% confidence intervals of b, and assigning a chemostatic, flushing, diluting, or non-systematic behavior category according to Koger (2018). The summary of these analyses for all six rivers is provided in one .csv file. The concentrations of 20 dissolved analytes and discharge measurement data for the individual Kolyma, Lena, Mackenzie, Ob, Yenisey, and Yukon rivers are also provided with this dataset. There are seven *.csv files; one for each river plus the statistical summary. These public ArcticGRO data at "https://www.arcticgreatrivers.org" (Shiklomanov, 2021) were downloaded on Feb 13, 2020, but each river has different measurement dates over the sampling and analysis period. The ArcticGRO metadata document (*.pdf) downloaded on Feb 13, 2020 is also included in this dataset. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

Measurements of Six-Junction Concentrator Solar Cells

Accurate measurements of six-junction inverted metamorphic concentrator solar cells under AM1.5 direct spectrum are obtained by adjusting the spectrum of a tunable high-intensity solar simulator with custom mirrors. Isotype reference cells and broadband InGaAs QE calibration cells were developed for accurate measurements. Modeling and varying the illumination show that an unavoidable 15% - 17% overillumination on the sixth junction does not result in significant error of these 6J IMM devices. Spectrally adjusted flash measurements are independently confirmed by NREL's Cell and Module Performance team. Concentration measurements of a 6J IMM solar cell resulted in 47.1 ± 3.2% (absolute) efficiency at 143 suns.

Probing ultrafast excited-state dynamics using EUV-IR six-wave-mixing emission spectroscopy

Non-linear processes such as four-wave-mixing have become instrumental in attosecond EUV spectroscopy. Using EUV high harmonics in conjunction with collinear near-infrared and mid-infrared fields, we extended this approach to high-order-mixing between three colors. Specifically, we find that atomic resonances in neon exhibit a significant cross section for six-wave mixing. The MIR probe frequency tunability in our multicolor scheme is employed to access several optically dark resonances and probe the quantum beat of a coherent electronic wavepacket using background-free EUV emission as a diagnostic. This technique can be easily extended to other atomic and molecular systems, and opens the door to multi-dimensional non-linear spectroscopy.

Six–Electron Chemistry of a Binuclear Fe(III) Fused Porphyrin

Here in this special collection dedicated to Prof. Jean-Michel Savéant, we report on the synthesis and characterization of a novel binuclear Fe(III) fused porphyrin. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy confirms the extended electronic structure of this macrocycle. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates the Fe centers experience a relatively rigid ligand environment as compared to a structurally related mononuclear complex featuring an 18 π-aromatic porphyrin ligand. X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopies confirm the iron centers of both assemblies are Fe(III) in the as prepared, resting state. In comparison with the mononuclear porphyrin, electrochemical measurements show there is a doubling of the number of redox events associated with the fused, binuclear complex. In conclusion, key features of the fused-iron-porphyrin include: 1) bimetallic-iron sites, 2) a π-extended ligand capable of delocalizing electrons across the multimetallic scaffold, and 3) the ability to store up to six electrons.

The three-point form factor of Tr ϕ 3 to six loops

We study the three-point form factor of the length-three half-BPS operator (Tr ϕ 3 ) in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 Super-Yang-Mills theory, using analyticity and integrability methods. We find that the functions describing the form factor in perturbation theory live in the same restrictive space of multiple polylogarithms as the one describing the form factor of the stress-tensor operator (Tr ϕ 2 ). Furthermore, we find that the leading-order data in the collinear limit provided by the form factor operator product expansion (FFOPE) is enough to fix the form factor uniquely, at least through six loops. We perform various tests of our results using the subleading FFOPE corrections. We also analyze the form factor in the Regge limit where two Mandelstam invariants are large; we obtain a compact representation for the form factor in this limit which is valid to all orders in the coupling.

Interacting chiral form field theories and $$ T\overline{T} $$-like flows in six and higher dimensions

Abstract In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariantp-form theories and corresponding$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. We elucidate space-time covariant properties of the PST formulation by clarifying and making use of its relation to the INZ-type formulation and to a so-called “clone” construction.
