T-odd leading-twist quark TMDs at small x

We study the small-x asymptotics of the flavor non-singlet T-odd leading-twist quark transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), the Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions. While the leading eikonal small-x asymptotics of the quark Sivers function is given by the spin-dependent odderon [1, 2], we are interested in revisiting the sub-eikonal correction considered by us earlier in [3]. We first simplify the expressions for both TMDs at small Bjorken x and then construct small-x evolution equations for the resulting operators in the large-N c limit, with N c the number of quark colors. For both TMDs, the evolution equations resum all powers of the double-logarithmic parameter α s ln 2 (1/x), where α s is the strong coupling constant, which is assumed to be small. Solving these evolution equations numerically (for the Sivers function) and analytically (for the Boer-Mulders function) we arrive at the following leading small-x asymptotics of these TMDs at large N c :$$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{l}{f}_{1T}^{\perp NS}\left(x\ll 1,{k}_T^2\right)={C}_O\left(x,{k}_T^2\right)\frac{1}{x}+{C}_1\left(x,{k}_T^2\right){\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)}^{3.4\sqrt{\frac{\alpha_s{N}_c}{4\pi }}}\\ {}{h}_1^{\perp \textrm{NS}}\left(x\ll 1,{k}_T^2\right)=C\left(x,{k}_T^2\right){\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)}^{-1}.\end{array}} $$ The functions C O (x,$ {k}_T^2 $), C 1 (x,$ {k}_T^2 $), and C(x,$ {k}_T^2 $) can be readily obtained in our formalism: they are mildly x-dependent and do not strongly affect the power-of-x asymptotics shown above. The function C O , along with the 1/x factor, arises from the odderon exchange. For the sub-eikonal contribution to the quark Sivers function (the term with C 1 ), our result shown above supersedes the one obtained in [3] due to the new contributions identified recently in [4].

ECCE sensitivity studies for single hadron transverse single spin asymmetry measurements

Here, we performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in pythia6 and geant4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably Q 2 >1 GeV 2 , and cover the x range from 10 -4 to 1. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of x and Q 2 , as well as the semi-inclusive variables z, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton, and P T , which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. In order to extract asymmetries, the initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and e + e – annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb –1 and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. Similar neutron information is obtained by comparing the ECCE e+p pseudo-data with the same from the EIC Yellow Report and scaling the corresponding Yellow Report e+ 3 He pseudo-data uncertainties accordingly. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. Finally, the impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parametrized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in $γ$ SIDIS as a direct probe of quark-gluon-quark longitudinal momentum structure

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic production of isolated photons ($\gamma$SIDIS), $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$, provide an unprecedented opportunity to extract the quark-gluon-quark correlators $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ point-by-point in their full support $x,x'$. We utilize realistic models for these functions, based on input from the Sivers transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and imposing constraints from the $d_2$ matrix element calculated in lattice QCD, in order to provide numerical estimates for $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We thoroughly explore the EIC phase space in order to isolate in which regions the asymmetry can be sizable, finding it can be as much as $10\%$ or larger for certain kinematics. Given that $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ are basically unknown, $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ will be an important future measurement to learn about multi-parton correlations in the nucleon.

Simultaneous reweighting of Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is extended to the case of multiple independent extractions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). By exploiting the data on transverse single spin asymmetries, A N , for inclusive pion production in polarized proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC, we perform a simultaneous reweighting of the quark Sivers, transversity and Collins TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and annihilation into hadron pairs. The impact of the implementation of the Soffer bound, as well as the differences between older and newer e + e - data, are investigated. The agreement with A N data at large-x F values, a kinematical region complementary to those explored in SIDIS measurements, is enhanced, improving the knowledge of the polarized quark TMDs in the large-x region.

On the physics potential to study the gluon content of proton and deuteron at NICA SPD

The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is a future multipurpose experiment foreseen to run at the NICA collider, which is currently under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna, Russia). The physics program of the experiment is based on collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at √s up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10 32 cm –2 s –1 . SPD will operate as a universal facility for the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon, using complementary probes such as: charmonia, open-charm, and prompt-photon production processes. Furthermore, the aim of this work is to provide a thorough review of the physics objectives that can potentially be addressed at SPD, underlining related theoretical aspects and discussing relevant experimental results when available. Among different pertinent phenomena particular attention is drawn to the study of the gluon helicity, gluon Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions in the nucleon, as well as the gluon transversity distribution in the deuteron, via the measurement of single and double spin asymmetries.

Complete lowest order radiative corrections in semi-inclusive scattering of polarized particles

For this work, the lowest order radiative corrections to the cross section and asymmetries measured in experiments on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarized particles were calculated. Both exact and leading log expressions were presented and discussed for the total correction that include the contributions from the processes of i) real photon emission with semi-inclusive processes, ii) loop diagrams, and iii) real photon emission with exclusive processes. Radiative corrections to the Sivers and Collins asymmetries in $\pi^+$ electroproduction were studied numerically within the kinematical conditions of modern experimental environments at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab). The Wandzura-Wilczek approximation for the semi-inclusive structure functions and MAID2007 parameterization for the six amplitudes of exclusive processes were used in numeric analyses. The results show that i) radiative effects can generate a correction comparable to the size of Sivers and Collins asymmetries at the Born level, ii) there is good agreement between the exact and leading-order corrections, iii) external functions (that is, other than the Sivers and Collins functions in the respective asymmetries) can generate a contribution to the radiative correction up to 20%, and iv) there exists a strong dependence of the radiative correction on the models for semi-inclusive and exclusive structure functions.

Future Studies of Dihadron Production in SIDIS

Spin asymmetry and cross section measurements in semi-inclusive hadroproduction grant access to a variety of parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Such measurements of dihadron production additionally constrain Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DiFFs), and the extra degree of freedom from the second hadron facilitates access to some of the parton distribution functions. At CLAS kinematics, subleading-twist parton distributions are accessible in dihadron beam-spin and target-spin asymmetries, and a comparison of semi-inclusive scattering off a proton and a deuteron probes their flavor dependence. The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with a transversely polarized proton will access several transverse-momentum dependent distributions such as Sivers and transversity. On the fragmentation side, numerous DiFFs are accessible, and their partial wave expansion probes correlations between the angular momentum of the fragmenting parton with that of the observed dihadron. Furthermore, different hadron channels probe flavor dependence in fragmentation. Together with CLAS, the EIC as well as CLAS with the proposed 22 GeV accelerator upgrade will cover a broad range of $Q^2$ and $x$, allowing for the study of evolution effects of all of these functions. This presentation will summarize the possibilities of these measurements at CLAS and at future experimental facilities.
