A blessing in disguise : Characterisations of ProtoDUNE photon showers for neutrino measurements in DUNE

There are few areas of particle physics as open to new discoveries as the neutrino sector. Although these particles are among the most abundant in the universe, their weak coupling to ordinary matter makes them a challenge to study. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an upcoming precision experiment in neutrino physics planned to be built between Illinois and South Dakota in the US. The most powerful neutrino beam in the world will be aimed at the largest liquid argon time projection chamber in the world through 1300 km of solid rock. In order to prototype this detector, a scale model was constructed and operated at CERN in 2018 called ProtoDUNE. This thesis presents three studies performed on this detector. The first concerns the readout of detector data by the FELIX data acquisition system, as well as compression studies performed on the same data. The second study concerns the identification of photons created in neutral pion decay, which form a major background to neutrino-produced electrons. The distinction between electrons and photons is based on the differing energy deposition in the initial part of the particle showers they produce. The third study concerns the energy reconstruction of particle showers in the detector. Although photon showers created from neutral pion decay are a major background to the eventual neutrino signal, they have a known energy profile and can thus be used to calibrate the energy reconstruction of particle showers in general, a vital requirement for DUNE’s physics goals.

CaloTrilogy: Toward a Breakthrough in One-Step, End-to-End, Physics-Guided Shower Generation for Modern Calorimeters

High-precision calorimeter simulation at current and future colliders imposes rapidly growing computational demands, motivating the development of machine-learning surrogates for traditional Monte Carlo tools such as Geant4. Flow matching and diffusion-based generative models have become leading approaches for high-dimensional fast simulation because of their sample quality, but typically require ${\cal O}(100)$ function evaluations at inference and often rely on auxiliary networks to constrain global observables, compromising streamlined end-to-end generation. We introduce a unified framework that improves the balance between speed, shower quality, and physics fidelity. The method combines: (i) an average velocity field integrator that enables sampling in one or a few evaluations; (ii) a learned generative prior in shower space, constructed from data rather than random noise; and (iii) physics-guided loss terms that impose inductive biases on key observables during training. These elements are training time regularizers, preserving end-to-end inference with no additional cost. With only one or a few evaluation steps, the model achieves shower quality competitive with state-of-the-art flow and diffusion approaches, tested on several public high granularity calorimeter datasets. The results demonstrate inter-layer shower structure consistent with the underlying physics, providing a strong candidate for future fast simulation workflows.

Towards $\mathrm{NNLO}$+$\mathrm{PS}$ matching with sector showers

We outline a new technique for the fully-differential matching of final-state parton showers to NNLO calculations, focussing here on the simplest case of leptonic collisions with two final-state jets. The strategy is facilitated by working in the antenna formalism, making use of NNLO antenna subtraction on the fixed-order side and the sector-antenna framework on the shower side. As long as the combined real-virtual and double-real corrections do not overcompensate the real-emission term in the three-jet region, negative weights can be eliminated from the matching scheme. We describe the implementation of all necessary components in the VINCIA antenna shower in PYTHIA 8.3.

Phenomenology of electroweak portal dark showers: high energy direct probes and low energy complementarity

We investigate the phenomenology of a dark QCD sector interacting with the Standard Model (SM) via the electroweak (EW) portals. The portal interactions allow SM bosons, such as Z and h, or additional bosons that mix with them, to decay into dark quarks, producing dark showers. The light dark mesons are expected to be long-lived particles (LLPs), as their decays back to the SM states through the EW-portal interactions typically have macroscopic decay lengths. We focus on dark shower events initiated by various bosons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The most prominent signal is the displaced decay of GeV-scale dark pions as LLPs. Current limits on dark shower signals at LHC detectors are recast from public data to provide simplified limits insensitive to UV physics details. Future limits in the high-luminosity phase and proposed auxiliary detectors are also projected. Additionally, we study the flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) B decays into dark pions, obtaining both current and projected constraints at the LHC and other facilities. These constraints can be combined for specific models, which are illustrated in two EW-portal benchmarks: one with the heavy doublet fermion mediation and another with the Z′ mediator including a mass mixing. The collider reach shows significant potential to probe the parameter space unconstrained by EW precision tests, highlighting the necessity of dedicated LLP search strategies and facilities.

Dark showers from Z-dark Z′ mixing

Abstract We discuss dark shower signals at the LHC from a dark QCD sector, containing GeV-scale dark pions. The portal with the Standard Model is given by the mixing of theZboson with a darkZ′ coupled to the dark quarks. Both mass and kinetic mixings are included, but the mass mixing is the essential ingredient, as it is the one mediating visible decays of the long-lived dark pions. We focus especially on the possibility that the darkZ′ islighterthan theZ. Indirect constraints are dominated by electroweak precision tests, which we thoroughly discuss, showing that bothZ-pole and low-energy observables are important. We then recast CMS and LHCb searches for displaced dimuon resonances to dark shower signals initiated by the production of on-shellZorZ′, where the visible signature is left by a dark pion decaying toμ + μ − . We demonstrate how dark shower topologies have already tested new parameter space in Run 2, reaching better sensitivity on a light darkZ′ compared to the flavor-changing decays ofBmesons, which can produce a single dark pion at a time, and the electroweak precision tests.

Detection of a particle shower at the Glashow resonance with IceCube

The Glashow resonance describes the resonant formation of a W - boson during the interaction of a high-energy electron antineutrino with an electron, peaking at an antineutrino energy of 6.3 petaelectronvolts (PeV) in the rest frame of the electron. Whereas this energy scale is out of reach for currently operating and future planned particle accelerators, natural astrophysical phenomena are expected to produce antineutrinos with energies beyond the PeV scale. Here we report the detection by the IceCube neutrino observatory of a cascade of high-energy particles (a particle shower) consistent with being created at the Glashow resonance. A shower with an energy of 6.05 ± 0.72 PeV (determined from Cherenkov radiation in the Antarctic Ice Sheet) was measured. Features consistent with the production of secondary muons in the particle shower indicate the hadronic decay of a resonant W - boson, confirm that the source is astrophysical and provide improved directional localization. The evidence of the Glashow resonance suggests the presence of electron antineutrinos in the astrophysical flux, while also providing further validation of the standard model of particle physics. Its unique signature indicates a method of distinguishing neutrinos from antineutrinos, thus providing a way to identify astronomical accelerators that produce neutrinos via hadronuclear or photohadronic interactions, with or without strong magnetic fields. As such, knowledge of both the flavour (that is, electron, muon or tau neutrinos) and charge (neutrino or antineutrino) will facilitate the advancement of neutrino astronomy.

Electromagnetic shower reconstruction and energy validation with Michel electrons and π 0 samples for the deep-learning-based analyses in MicroBooNE

This article presents the reconstruction of the electromagnetic activity from electrons and photons (showers) used in the MicroBooNE deep learning-based low energy electron search. The reconstruction algorithm uses a combination of traditional and deep learning-based techniques to estimate shower energies. We validate these predictions using two v μ -sourced data samples: charged/neutral current interactions with final state neutral pions and charged current interactions in which the muon stops and decays within the detector producing a Michel electron. Both the neutral pion sample and Michel electron sample demonstrate agreement between data and simulation. Finally, the absolute shower energy scale is shown to be consistent with the relevant physical constant of each sample: the neutral pion mass peak and the Michel energy cutoff.

Using graph neural networks to reconstruct charged pion showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showersin the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. TheHGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse andlongitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors andscintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are acombination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, andsteel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method isbased on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamicreduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm isable to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinderthe reconstruction of hadronic showers using classicalreconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in themultiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower'sconstituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated usingtest beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCALaccompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. Thecapability of the method to mitigate the impact of energy leakagefrom the calorimeter is also demonstrated.

Quantum parton shower with kinematics

Parton showers, which can efficiently incorporate quantum interference effects, have been shown to be run efficiently on quantum computers. However, so far these quantum parton showers have not included the full kinematical information required to reconstruct an event, which in classical parton showers requires the use of a veto algorithm. Here, in this work, we show that adding one extra assumption about the discretization of the evolution variable allows one to construct a quantum veto algorithm, which reproduces the full quantum interference in the event, and allows one to include kinematical effects. We finally show that for certain initial states the quantum interference effects generated in this veto algorithm are classically tractable, such that an efficient classical algorithm can be devised.

Accelerating accurate simulations of calorimeter showers with normalizing flows and probability density distillation

Recently, we introduced caloflow, a high-fidelity generative model for GEANT4 calorimeter shower emulation based on normalizing flows. Here, we present caloflow v2, an improvement on our original framework that speeds up shower generation by a further factor of 500 relative to the original. The improvement is based on a technique called probability density distillation, originally developed for speech synthesis in the machine learning literature, and which we develop further by introducing a set of powerful new loss terms. We demonstrate that caloflow v2 preserves the same high fidelity as the original using qualitative (average images, histograms of high-level features) and quantitative (classifier metric between geant4 and generated samples) measures. The result is a generative model for calorimeter showers that matches the state of the art in speed (a factor of 10 4 faster than GEANT4) and greatly surpasses the previous state of the art in fidelity.

Demonstrating Agreement between Radio and Fluorescence Measurements of the Depth of Maximum of Extensive Air Showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ( X max ) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X max resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X max measurements with even a sparse radio array. With this, we show that the radio technique is capable of cosmic-ray mass composition studies, both at Auger and at other experiments. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Direct measurement of the muonic content of extensive air showers between 2 $\times$ 10 17 and 2 $\times$ 10 18 eV at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory allows for the measurement of the properties of extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. By using an array of prototype underground muon detectors, we have performed the first direct measurement, by the Auger Collaboration, of the muon content of air showers between 2 $\times$ 10 17 and 2 $\times$ 10 18 eV. We have studied the energy evolution of the attenuation-corrected muon density, and compared it to predictions from air shower simulations. The observed densities are found to be larger than those predicted by models. We quantify this discrepancy by combining the measurements from the muon detector with those from the Auger fluorescence detector at 10 17.5 eV and 10 18 eV. We find that, for the models to explain the data, an increase in the muon density of 38% $±$4%(12%) $±^{21\%}_{18\%}$ for EPOS-LHC, and of 50%(53%) $±$4%(13%) $±^{23\%}_{20\%}$ for QGSJETII-04, is respectively needed.

A Novel Hit-Based Method to Distinguish Tracks and Showers in ProtoDUNE Single Phase

Pandora is a pattern recognition software used in liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments such as MicroBooNE, DUNE, SBND, ICARUS, and ProtoDUNE Single Phase (SP). The output of a LArTPC can be considered a high-resolution 2D image and energy depositions, called hits, from particles in a LArTPC create complicated topologies that are broadly classified into tracks and showers. The event reconstruction is particularly challenging when there are multiple overlapping particles and in order to fully harness the imaging capabilities of thoseexperiments, Pandora needs to separate them. A hit-based approach to this problem is presented, which analyses small regions around each hit in events from DUNE Far Detector (FD) and from those regions it calculates local variables that are used subsequently in a machine learning approach. After this stage, it is given to each hit a probability to belong to a track or shower-like particle. Results will show the performance of separation between tracks and showers. This method is planned to be used for ProtoDUNE SP.

Core-corona hadronization model and muon puzzle in extensive air showers

The discrepancy between models and measurements concerning the muon content in air showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays, the so-called muon puzzle, remains unsolved. String fragmentation models currently used in hadronic interactions fail to reproduce the observations, while recent measurements at the LHC hint towards the existence of production mechanisms, such as collective statistical hadronization, which lead to an increase in the muon production after a hadronic interaction. The core-corona model of heavy ions implements both production mechanisms, where the large-density region of interaction (core) hadronizes statistically, while the low-density (corona) hadronizes following string fragmentation. In this contribution, we present a modification of the CONEX framework to implement the core-corona model in air shower simulations. We demonstrate a significant impact of the core effect, as observed at the LHC, on the muon content in air showers produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays.

Long-lived heavy neutral leptons with a displaced shower signature at $\mathrm{CMS}$

We study the LHC discovery potential in the search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) with a new signature: a displaced shower in the CMS muon detector, giving rise to a large cluster of hits forming a displaced shower. A new Delphes module is used to model the CMS detector response for such displaced decays. We reinterpret a dedicated CMS search for neutral long-lived particles decaying in the CMS muon endcap detectors for the minimal HNL scenario. We demonstrate that this new strategy is particularly sensitive to active-sterile mixings with τ leptons, due to hadronic τ decays. HNL masses between ~ 1–6 GeV can be accessed for mixings as low as |V τN | 2 ~10 -7 , probing unique regions of parameter space in the τ sector.

3D Radio Frequency Mapping and Polarization Observations Show Lightning Flashes Were Ignited by Cosmic‐Ray Showers

Previous 2D radio frequency interferometric observations showed that lightning is commonly started with a positive fast discharge (+FD) before a normal negative leader continues from the origin of the +FD to the ensuing lightning flash. However, the inception and development of the +FD cannot be convincingly explained by existing discharge theories. With our new 3D broadband interferometric mapping and polarization system, we observed that the +FD was sometimes followed by an even faster and more extensive negative discharge (−FD) that propagated backward and overshoot the origin by a few hundred meters, as reported by an earlier 2D study. Surprisingly, the signal polarization, which measures the orientation of the discharge current, systematically slanted from the discharge propagation direction and rotated between the two opposite discharges, showing the +FD and −FD were driven by other storm-independent factors in addition to the storm electric field, or otherwise all would align in the same direction. Assuming a cosmic-ray shower (CRS) piercing through the cloud immediately before the +FD/−FD discharge, we found that their path is consistent with a pre-ionized path by the CRS, and the polarizations for the two opposite discharges are consistent with the respective deflected trajectories of high-energy positrons and electrons in the geomagnetic and an electric field. We further analyzed the more commonly observed +FD and showed that it is consistent with the CRS interpretation, suggesting these flashes in thunderstorms were ignited by cosmic-ray showers.
