A Surface Se-Substituted LiCo[O 2-δ Se δ ] Cathode with Ultrastable High-Voltage Cycling in Pouch Full-Cells

Cycling LiCoO 2 to above 4.5 V for higher capacity is enticing; however, hybrid O anion- and Co cation-redox (HACR) at high voltages facilitates intrinsic O α - (α < 2) migration, causing oxygen loss, phase collapse, and electrolyte decomposition that severely degrade the battery cyclability. Hereby, commercial LiCoO 2 particles are operando treated with selenium, a well-known anti-aging element to capture oxygen-radicals in the human body, showing an “anti-aging” effect in high-voltage battery cycling and successfully stopping the escape of oxygen from LiCoO 2 even when the cathode is cycled to 4.62 V. Furthermore, ab initio calculation and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis suggest that during deep charging, the precoated Se will initially substitute some mobile O α - at the charged LiCoO 2 surface, transplanting the pumped charges from O α - and reducing it back to O 2- to stabilize the oxygen lattice in prolonged cycling. As a result, the material retains 80% and 77% of its capacity after 450 and 550 cycles under 100 mA g -1 in 4.57 V pouch full-cells matched with a graphite anode and an ultralean electrolyte (2 g Ah -1 ).

Octahedral to tetrahedral bonding transitions in the local structure of phase change optical media Ge 2 Sb 2 Se 5 x Te 5-5 x with Se doping

Random access memories utilize fast, reversible switching between ordered and disordered states of matter in phase change materials (PCMs) such as Ge2Sb2Te5-5x. The short-range structure in the disordered phase has been described either as (i) a network of Ge tetrahedra or (ii) Peierls distorted Ge/Sb octahedra. The PCM transition was investigated in bulk Ge2Sb2Se5xTe5-5x (GSST), in which amorphization sets in with Se doping (x ≈ 0.85) upon quenching. GSST has a hexagonal crystalline ground state with Ge/Sb octahedral coordination, but the phase change transition to the amorphous state that is only observed when the system is quenched brings a short-range structure with sharp, tetrahedrally coordinated Ge/Sb correlations and shortened bonds that are distinctly different from the expected octahedral pairing.

Revealing the Surface Structure of CdSe Nanocrystals by Dynamic Nuclear Polarization-Enhanced 77 Se and 113 Cd Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy was used to obtain detailed surface structures of zinc blende CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) with plate or spheroidal morphologies which are capped by carboxylic acid ligands. 1D 113 Cd and 77 Se cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR spectra revealed distinct signals from Cd and Se atoms on the surface of the NCs, and those residing in bulk-like environments, below the surface. 113 Cd cross-polarization magic-angle-turning (CP-MAT) experiments identified CdSe 3 O, CdSe 2 O 2 , and CdSeO 3 Cd coordination environments on the surface of the NCs, where the oxygen atoms are presumably from coordinated carboxylate ligands. The sensitivity gain from DNP enabled natural isotopic abundance 2D homonuclear 113 Cd– 113 Cd and 77 Se– 77 Se and heteronuclear 113 Cd– 77 Se scalar correlation solid-state NMR experiments which revealed the connectivity of the Cd and Se atoms. Importantly, 77 Se{ 113 Cd} scalar heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence ( J -HMQC) experiments were used to selectively measure one-bond 77 Se– 113 Cd scalar coupling constants ( 1 J ( 77 Se, 113 Cd)). With knowledge of 1 J ( 77 Se, 113 Cd), heteronuclear 77 Se{ 113 Cd} spin echo ( J -resolved) NMR experiments were used to determine the number of Cd atoms bonded to Se atoms and vice versa. Furthermore, the J -resolved experiments directly confirmed that major Cd and Se surface species have CdSe 2 O 2 and SeCd 4 stoichiometries, respectively. Considering the crystal structure of zinc blende CdSe and the similarity of the solid-state NMR data for the platelets and spheroids, we conclude that the surface of the spheroidal CdSe NCs is primarily composed of {100} facets. The methods outlined here will generally be applicable to obtain detailed surface structures of various main group semiconductor nanoparticles.

Oxidation of Dissolved Tetravalent Selenium by Birnessite: Se Isotope Fractionation and the Effects of pH and Birnessite Structure

Redox reactions control the mobility and bioavailability of selenium (Se) in biogeochemical systems, both modern and ancient. Se isotope ratio measurements (e.g., 82 Se/ 76 Se) have been developed to enhance understanding of biogeochemical transformations and transport of Se. Stable isotope ratios of many elements are known to be powerful indicators of redox reactions, and shifts in 82 Se/ 76 Se have been observed for Se reduction reactions. However, Se isotope shifts caused by naturally relevant oxidation reactions have not been published. Here, we report Se isotope fractionation factors for oxidation of Se(IV) by birnessite. Experiments were conducted at pH = 4.0 and 5.5, with two types of birnessite of contrasting composition at two concentrations of suspended birnessite. The results are consistent with a single 82 Se/ 76 Se fractionation factor, for all times during all experiments, of 0.99767 (±0.0035 2 s.d.). Expressed as ε, the fractionation is 2.33‰ (±0.08‰).

Unraveling the Nature of Excellent Potassium Storage in Small-Molecule Se@Peapod-Like N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers

The potassium-selenium (K-Se) battery is considered as an alternative solution for stationary energy storage because of abundant resource of K. However, the detailed mechanism of the energy storage process is yet to be unraveled. In this work, the findings in probing the working mechanism of the K-ion storage in Se cathode are reported using both experimental and computational approaches. A flexible K-Se battery is prepared by employing the small-molecule Se embedded in freestanding N -doped porous carbon nanofibers thin film (Se@NPCFs) as cathode. The reaction mechanisms are elucidated by identifying the existence of short-chain molecular Se encapsulated inside the microporous host, which transforms to K 2 Se by a two-step conversion reaction via an "all-solid-state" electrochemical process in the carbonate electrolyte system. Through the whole reaction, the generation of polyselenides (K 2 Se n , 3 ≤ n ≤ 8) is effectively suppressed by electrochemical reaction dominated by Se-2 molecules, thus significantly enhancing the utilization of Se and effecting the voltage platform of the K-Se battery. This work offers a practical pathway to optimize the K-Se battery performance through structure engineering and manipulation of selenium chemistry for the formation of selective species and reveal its internal reaction mechanism in the carbonate electrolyte.

Development of arsenic doped Cd(Se,Te) absorbers by MOCVD for thin film solar cells

Recent developments in CdTe solar cell technology have included the incorporation of ternary alloy Cd(Se,Te) in the devices. CdTe absorber band gap grading due to Se alloying contributes to current density enhancement and can result in device performance improvement. Here we report Cd(Se,Te) polycrystalline thin films grown by a chamberless inline atmospheric pressure metal organic chemical vapour deposition technique, with subsequent incorporation in CdTe solar cells. The compositional dependence of the crystal structure and optical properties of Cd(Se,Te) are examined. Selenium graded Cd(Se,Te)/CdTe absorber structure in devices are demonstrated using either a single CdSe layer or CdSe/Cd(Se,Te) bilayer (with or without As doping in the Cd(Se,Te) layer). Cross-sectional TEM/EDS, photoluminescence spectra and secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of a graded Se profile toward the back contact with a diffusion length of ~1.5 um and revealed back-diffusion of Group V (As) dopants from the CdTe layer into Cd(Se,Te) grains. Due to the strong Se/Te interdiffusion, CdSe in the Se bilayer configuration was unable to form an n-type emitter layer in processed devices. In situ As doping of the Cd(Se,Te) layer benefited the device junction quality with current density reaching 28.3 mA/cm 2 . The results provide useful insights for the optimisation of Cd(Se,Te)/CdTe solar cells.

Structure, bonding and electronic characteristics of amorphous Se

Ovonic threshold switching (OTS) selector can effectively improve the storage density and suppress the leakage current of advanced phase-change memory. As a prototypical OTS material, amorphous GeSe is widely investigated. But the attentions paid to amorphous Se (i.e., the functional constituent in amorphous GeSe) is very limited up to now. Here, in this work, we have explored the structure, bonding and electronic characteristics of amorphous Se using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the Se atoms in amorphous Se tend to form the 2-coordinated configurations, and they connect with each other to form the long chains. The fraction of vibrational density of state located in high frequency range is relatively large, and the formation energy of Se-Se bond is as large as 4.44 eV, hinting that the Se-Se bonds in chains possess a high stability. In addition, the mid-gap state related to the OTS behavior is also found in the amorphous Se despite of the small proportion. Our findings enrich the knowledge of the amorphous Se, which contributes to the applications of Se-based OTS selectors.

Single crystals and polycrystalline powders of rare earth mixed chalcogenide iodides La 3 Si 2 Se 1.21 S 6.79 I, Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I, Pr 3 Si 2 Se 1.22 S 6.78 I, and Nd 3 Si 2 Se 1.18 S 6.82 I were prepared using the reactive flux-assisted boron–chalcogen mixture (BCM) method at 850 °C. All compounds crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system, space group C2/c (space group number 15). The series adopts the La 3 Si 2 O 8 Cl structure type, containing isolated SiQ 4 tetrahedra connected by REQ 8 (RE = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) polyhedra; this arrangement creates tunnels that are filled by I atoms. The partial substitution of S by Se was carried out to modulate the optical properties. Phase pure samples and uniform solid solutions were obtained for all compositions as determined using powder X-ray diffraction patterns. Polycrystalline powders were used for physical property measurements, including magnetic susceptibility and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance. The solid-state UV-Vis data for the polycrystalline La 3 Si 2 Se 1.21 S 6.79 I, Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I, and Pr 3 Si 2 Se 1.22 S 6.78 I samples revealed band gaps of E g = 2.5(1), 2.2(1), and 2.3(1) eV, typical of semiconductors. Magnetic measurements indicated that Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I and Nd 3 Si 2 Se 1.18 S 6.82 I exhibit paramagnetic behavior with slightly negative Weiss constants θ = −25 and −38. The photoluminescence spectrum of Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I exhibits a broad emission band around ∼493 nm.

Atomic Structure, Dynamics, Changes in Chemical Bonding and Semiconductor-Metal Transition in Sb 2 Se 3 : A Remarkable Material for Quantum Networks and Energy Applications

Antimony sesquiselenide has become an outstanding functional material for photovoltaics, energy storage and transformation, memory and photonic applications. Sb 2 Se 3 is one of the most successful emerging solar light absorbers and has also been identified as a highly promising ultralow-loss phase-change material (PCM) for next-generation coherent nanophotonic processors, photonic tensor cores, quantum and neuromorphic networks. Unlike benchmark telluride PCMs, Sb 2 Se 3 features a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) crystalline structure consisting of (Sb 4 Se 6 ) ∞ ribbons, lacks the typical PCM chemical bonding, and undergoes an extended semiconductor-metal transition above the melting point. Consequently, the origin of high optical contrast between crystalline (SET) and amorphous (RESET) logic states remains elusive and presents a significant challenge. Using high-energy X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy over a wide temperature range, supported by first-principles simulations and complemented by thermal, optical and electrical measurements, as well as by 121 Sb-Mossbauer spectroscopy, the quasi-1D network of orthorhombic antimony sesquiselenide was found to undergo significant evolution in amorphous and supercooled Sb 2 Se 3 , leading to lower coordination, shorter interatomic distances and a higher p-electron density on antimony, indicating changes in chemical bonding. The observed novel Sb 2 Se 3 nanocrystalline polymorph, characterized by trigonal antimony coordination and more isolated Sb-Se ribbons, could help reduce multiple trapping defect states in the bandgap, which are typical of orthorhombic Sb 2 Se 3 , thereby enhancing the power-conversion efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Semimetallic and metallic liquid Sb 2 Se 3 exhibit a gradual transformation into a denser 2D and/or 3D network with higher antimony coordination. Localized electron states in the pseudogap are becoming extended, leading to an increase in electronic conductivity σ following the relationship σ ∝ N(E F ) 2 . Liquid Sb 2 Se 3 also appears to be strongly fragile, with a nonmonotonic change in viscosity and higher atomic mobility in the metallic liquid. Furthermore, these results explain extraordinary functionalities of Sb 2 Se 3 for photonic and energy applications.

Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Heteroanionic Control of Exemplary Second-Harmonic Generation and Phase Matchability in 1D LiAsS 2– x Se x

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds β-LiAsS 2–x Se x (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe 2 . These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional $\frac{1}{∞}$ [AsQ 2 ] - (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li + atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS 2–x Se x melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the β- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe 2 , which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS 2 ) and reaching 1.06 eV (β-LiAsSe 2 ). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of β-LiAsS 2–x Se x show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe 2 (d 36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS 2 . In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a d eff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS 0.25 Se 1.75 , and β-LiAsSe 2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 μm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe 2 , with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe 2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe 2 .

Superconducting Fourfold Fe(Te,Se) Film on Sixfold Magnetic MnTe via Hybrid Symmetry Epitaxy

Epitaxial Fe(Te,Se) thin films have been grown on various substrates but never been grown on magnetic layers. In this work, we report the epitaxial growth of fourfold Fe(Te,Se) film on a sixfold antiferromagnetic insulator, MnTe. The Fe(Te,Se)/MnTe heterostructure shows a clear superconducting transition at around 11 K, and the critical magnetic field measurement suggests the origin of the superconductivity to be bulk-like. Structural characterizations suggest that the uniaxial lattice match between Fe(Te,Se) and MnTe allows a hybrid symmetry epitaxy mode, which was recently discovered between Fe(Te,Se) and Bi 2 Te 3 . Furthermore, the Te/Fe flux ratio during deposition of the Fe(Te,Se) layer is found to be critical for its superconductivity. Now that superconducting Fe(Te,Se) can be grown on two related hexagonal platforms, Bi 2 Te 3 and MnTe, this result opens a new possibility of combining topological superconductivity of Fe(Te,Se) with the rich physics in the intrinsic magnetic topological materials (MnTe) n (Bi 2 Te 3 ) m family.

Negative linear compressibility in Se at ultra-high pressure above 120 GPa

A series of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were carried out, combined with first-principles calculations, to study structural phase transitions of selenium at high pressures and room temperature. Several phase transitions were observed, among which an isostructural phase transition was found at around 120 GPa for the first time. Evolved from the rhombohedral (space group R$\bar{3}$m) structure (Se-V), the new phase (Se-V') exhibited an interesting increase of lattice parameter a at pressures from 120 to 148 GPa, known as negative linear compressibility (NLC). The discovery of NLC behavior observed in this work is mainly attributed to the accuracy and fine steps controlled by the membrane system for in situ XRD data collected with an exposure time of 0.5 s. After 140 GPa, a body-centered cubic (b.c.c.) structure Se-VI (space group Im$\bar{3}$m) was formed, which remains stable up to 210 GPa, the highest pressure achieved in this study. The bulk moduli of phases Se-V, Se-V' and Se-VI were estimated to be 83 ± 2, 321 ± 2 and 266 ± 7 GPa, respectively, according to the P–V curve fit by the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. The Se-V' phase shows a bulk modulus almost 4 times larger than that of the Se-V phase, which is mainly due to the effect of its NLC. NLC in a higher pressure range is always more significant in terms of fundamental mechanism and new materials discovery, yet it has barely been reported at pressures above 100 GPa. This will hopefully inspire future studies on potential NLC behaviors in other materials at ultra-high pressure.
