Space Operations Learning Center (SOLC) iPhone/iPad Application

This iPhone application, Space Junk Sammy, is intended to be an educational application designed for Apple iPhones and iPads. This new concept educates kids in an innovative way about how orbital debris affects space missions. Orbital debris is becoming a very significant concern for NASA and all Earthorbiting space missions. Spacecraft in low-Earth orbit are in constant danger of being potentially damaged or destroyed by debris. High-profile spacecraft such as the International Space Station (ISS) and Hubble Space Telescope are dealing with orbital debris on a regular basis. Other basic educational concepts that are portrayed are low-Earth orbits, satellites, ISS, attitude control, and other facts that can be presented in betweenlevel popup screens. The Orbital Debris Cleanup game is relatively simple from the user s technical standpoint. It is a 2D game where the user s avatar is a satellite buddy, named Sammy, in orbit around Earth. Sammy is controlled by the user with the device s gyroscope as well as touchscreen controls. It has equipment used for taking care of the space debris objects on the screen. Sammy also has a claw, a laser deflector, and hydrazine rockets to grab or push the debris objects into a higher orbit or into a lower orbit to burn up in the Earth s atmosphere. The user interface shows Sammy and space debris objects constantly moving from left to right, where Sammy is trying to catch the debris objects before they move off the right side of the screen. Everything will be in constant motion to increase fun and add to the realism of orbiting the Earth. The satellite buddy is used to clean up the space debris and protect other satellites. Later levels will include a laser deflector and hydrazine rockets instead of a robotic claw to push the orbital debris into a higher orbit and out of the path of other satellites

Resolved Resonance Evaluation for Neutron Interactions with 103 Rh up to 8 keV

A neutron cross-section evaluation for the n + 103 Rh reaction in the resolved resonance region was carried out in the energy range 10−5 eV to 8 keV encompassing thermal energy at 0.0253 eV. The scope of this work is to generate resonance parameters and resonance parameter covariances based on the Reich-Moore reduced R-matrix formalism using the code SAMMY. Some features of the new evaluation are the inclusion of high-resolution capture data in the SAMMY evaluation process and the extension of the resolved resonance range from 4 to 8 keV. Furthermore, the evaluation employs more accurate resonance parameter representation by exploring the use of the LRF = 7 ENDF feature and also the use of the LCOMP = 2 compact format for resonance parameter covariance representation. Included in the SAMMY evaluation are transmission data, capture cross-section data, and neutron scattering length information. Thermal cross-section values listed in the literature, as well as capture resonance integrals, were also incorporated into the evaluation process.

140,142 Ce Neutron Cross Section Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation

A resolved resonance region evaluation of 140,142 Ce was conducted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Requested by the US Nuclear Criticality Safety Program, this evaluation is based on recent high-resolution transmission and capture high-resolution measurements of nat Ce and 142 Ce conducted at JRC-Geel at the Geel Linear Accelerator facility. It is also based on recently measured thermal constants available from the EX FOR database. Starting from the resonance parameters from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library and following a preliminary R-matrix analysis, an updated set of resonance parameters and corresponding covariance in formation was derived by the fit of these experimental datasets using the Reich–Moore approximation of the R-matrix theory, as implemented in the SAMMY code system. The resolved resonance region upper energy limit for 140 Ce was kept at 200 keV, whereas the 142 Ce resonance region was extended from 13 to 26 keV. This new evaluation was found to be in good agreement not only with several integral quantities of interest to the reactor physics community, but also with the stellar Maxwellian-averaged cross section.

Resolved resonance region evaluations of n+ 206,207,208 Pb for fast spectrum applications

Resolved resonance region evaluations of the major isotopes of natural lead, 206 Pb, 207 Pb, 208 Pb, have been per formed to support the development of Generation IV reactors. In this study, validation of nuclear data for lead fast reactors was performed with simulations of shielding benchmarks, integral critical benchmarks, and quasi-differential scattering measurements. Sensitivity analyses of these systems showed that elastic scattering reactions above 100 keV were the dominant reactions driving system performance. The resolved resonance regions (RRRs) of the lead isotopes extend past 100 keV, making the RRR an ideal starting point to evaluate lead cross sections. Since the R-matrix requires knowledge of bound, distant, and observed resonances, it was necessary to evaluate from 10 -5 eV up to the respective limit of the RRR. The 208 Pb RRR evaluation was extended to 1.5 MeV in order to obtain resonance parameters used to calculate new elastic scattering angular distributions up to 1.5 MeV. Resonance parameter uncertainties and covariance were generated using the R-matrix code SAMMY. The new RRR parameters show a direct improvement to the scattering kernel below 1.5 MeV which in turn greatly improves fast critical experiments over ENDF/B-VIII.0.

Advancing the Theory of Nuclear Data Evaluations [Abstract]

We present recent advances in the R-matrix formalism as well as the Bayesian evaluation framework for improved nuclear data evaluations. The advances in the R matrix formalism include: 1) direct processes, 2) doorway, as well as multistep, processes, and 3) various forms of the Reich-Moore approximation for eliminated capture channels. Furthermore, to address unreasonably small posterior uncertainties often encountered in nuclear data evaluations of large data sets using the conventional form of the Bayes’ theorem, we introduce imperfections (of the data or the model) as a formal evaluation tool for taming the evaluated uncertainties in harmony with Bayes’ theorem. These theoretical advances were motivated by the nuclear data evaluations of differential resolved resonance cross section data using the code SAMMY, as well as the integral benchmark experiments using the SCALE code system, being performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program. Some pedagogical applications of the new formalism, as well as a snapshot of the SAMMY modernization efforts, will be presented.

R -Matrix Analysis and Statistical Properties of Dysprosium Isotopes in the Neutron Energy Ranges Up To A Few Kev

In support of the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program, a set of evaluated resonance parameters was generated for seven dysprosium isotopes in the neutron energy range from thermal up to a few keV. The evaluation methodology used the Reich-Moore approximation to fit, with the R-matrix code SAMMY, the high-resolution capture and transmission measurements on natural and enriched samples recently performed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Gaerttner LINear ACcelerator facility. Additional transmission data measured on enriched samples by Liou at the Columbia University Nevis synchrocyclotron in the mid-seventies were used to gauge the neutron widths above 15 eV. Thermal constants such as absorption and (in)coherent scattering cross sections and corresponding scattering lengths were calibrated to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s compilation except for 161,164 Dy isotopes.

Quantitative characterization of the small-scale fracture patterns on the plains of Venus

The objectives of this research project were to (1) compile a comprehensive database of the occurrence of regularly spaced kilometer scale lineations on the volcanic plains of Venus in an effort to verify the effectiveness of the shear-lag model developed by Banerdt and Sammis (1992), and (2) develop a model for the formation of irregular kilometer scale lineations such as typified in the gridded plains region of Guinevere Planitia. Attached to this report is the paper 'A Tectonic Model for the Formation of the Gridded Plains on Guinevere Planitia, Venus, and Implications for the Elastic Thickness of the Lithosphere'.

Phenomenological R -Matrix parameterization of direct, doorway, and compound nuclear reactions [Abstract]

Although formal expressions for scattering matrix accounting for direct, doorway, and compound nuclear (CN) resonant reactions have been derived several decades ago in both the transition ( T -)matrix formalism and the reactance ( K -)matrix formalism, the absence of corresponding expressions in phenomenological R -matrix formalism has limited the application of the latter to CN resonant reactions only. We remove this limitation by parameterizing direct, doorway, and CN resonant reactions in a phenomenological R -matrix scattering matrix, and provide a parameterization for a corresponding Reich-Moore approximation of eliminated capture channels. Direct reactions induce (previously neglected) mixing among the incoming or outgoing R -matrix channel wave functions, parameterized by real and orthonormal channel-rotation matrix, M , whereby the original scattering matrix U is transformed into M T UM . Any real and orthonormal matrix, M , can be equivalently expressed as e η , where η is a real and skew-symmetric 2 rotation-generating matrix that subsequently yields a more intuitive parameterization of eliminated direct capture reactions in Reich-Moore approximation. A phenomenological R -matrix parameterization of doorway reactions is inferred by equating the expression for reactance ( K -)matrix, given in terms of Brune’s alternative R -matrix parameterization, to a corresponding expression derived using Feshbach’s projection operator formalism. Assuming that all doorway states, just like CN states, are confined within spheres defined by R -matrix channel radii, a new R -matrix-like term induced by doorway states is gleaned, wherein each doorway state is parameterized by its energy, width, and the strength of its coupling to each CN state. Since a Reich-Moore approximation for retained-channel scattering matrix ought to approximate the effect of eliminated capture channels taking place via direct, doorway, or CN reactions, each of the three kinds of reactions contributing to the capture entails a corresponding Reich-Moore parameterization in a first-order approximation: direct contribution is parameterized by introducing finite diagonal elements of a retained-channel rotation-generating matrix, doorway contribution is parameterized by doorway capture widths, while CN contribution is parameterized by conventional Reich-Moore capture widths. We will present evidence of direct and doorway reactions observed in recent measurements of resolved resonance cross sections at the Gaerttner LINAC Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and will outline a path for implementing this new R -matrix parameterization into the SAMMY nuclear data evaluation code.

Updates and Validation for the n+ 63,65 Cu Cross Sections [Abstract]

The neutron induced total, elastic, and capture cross sections of 63,65 Cu isotopes were selected for evaluation in the resolved and unresolved resonance energy ranges by the National Criticality Safety Program to resolve discrepancies related to benchmark performance. This is especially evident for the series of ZEUS benchmarks in which copper is used as a reflector. Because copper is also used as structural material in both fission and fusion reactors, the need to address benchmark discrepancies linked to nuclear data deficiencies is a task of primary importance. The aim of this work is to describe the steps of evaluation work towards a consistent improvement of the benchmark performance. The R-matrix analysis with the SAMMY code focused on the 63 Cu(n,γ) reaction channel between 100-300 keV coupled to unresolved resonance region parameters up to 650 keV to fit average cross section data from a recent experiment. Due to the high sensitivity of many benchmarks to elastic scattering angular distribution data, especially for the 65 Cu isotope, the impact of these data was tested by generating Legendre coefficients from both resonance parameters and the Hauser-Feshbach model. Guided by the findings of Shaw et al., the performance of the current evaluation for 65 Cu was compared to that of ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 by testing the reactivity coefficients corresponding to the validation suite of experimental criticality benchmarks for thermal, intermediate, and fast systems taken from the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments Project Handbook. The benchmark performance is especially sensitive to 63 Cu(n,γ) and 65 Cu elastic scattering for neutron energies in the 100–500 keV region, whereas 100 keV is the upper limit of the resolved resonance region in the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluations for 63,65 Cu. The results highlight the need to handle the transition from the resolved resonance region to the high energy region carefully.
