Global/local stress analysis of composite panels

A method for performing a global/local stress analysis is described, and its capabilities are demonstrated. The method employs spline interpolation functions which satisfy the linear plate bending equation to determine displacements and rotations from a global model which are used as boundary conditions for the local model. Then, the local model is analyzed independent of the global model of the structure. This approach can be used to determine local, detailed stress states for specific structural regions using independent, refined local models which exploit information from less-refined global models. The method presented is not restricted to having a priori knowledge of the location of the regions requiring local detailed stress analysis. This approach also reduces the computational effort necessary to obtain the detailed stress state. Criteria for applying the method are developed. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated using a classical stress concentration problem and a graphite-epoxy blade-stiffened panel with a discontinuous stiffener.

Global/local stress analysis of composite panels

A method for performing a global/local stress analysis is described and its capabilities are demonstrated. The method employs spline interpolation functions which satisfy the linear plate bending equation to determine displacements and rotations from a global model which are used as 'boundary conditions' for the local model. Then, the local model is analyzed independently of the global model of the structure. This approach can be used to determine local, detailed stress states for specific structural regions using independent, refined local models which exploit information from less-refined global models. The method presented is not restricted to having a priori knowledge of the location of the regions requiring local detailed stress analysis. Improved Stress Analysis Of Multicomponent Rotors

Suitable formulation of finite-element model speeds computation. Improved method developed for analysis of stress and compatibility of components in multicomponent rotating assembly. In method, single finite-element mathematical model represents all of components. Made possible by use of gap elements to represent contact surfaces between components.

Working charts for the stress analysis of elliptic rings

This report presents charts which reduce the stress analysis of circular and elliptic rings of uniform cross section subjected to balanced systems of concentrated loads from a statically indeterminate problem to a statically determinate one. To demonstrate the use of the charts in the stress analysis of elliptic rings, an illustrative problem is included.

On finite element stress analysis of spur gears

Spur gear stress analysis results are presented for a variety of loading conditions, support conditions, root radii, and rime thicknesses. These results are obtained using the SAP-IV finite element code. The maximum stresses, occurring at the root surface, substantially increase with decreasing rim thickness for partially supported rims (that is, with loose fitting hubs). For fully supported rims (that is, with tight fitting hubs), the root surface stresses slightly decrease with decreasing rim thickness. The fillet radius has a significant effect upon the maximum stesses at the root surface. These stresses increase with decreasing fillet radius. Finally, the fillet radius has little effect upon the internal root section stresses.

Final stress analysis report ultraviolet spectrometer S169

The stress analysis report verifies the structural integrity of the Apollo S-169 UV-spectrometer experiment. The methods by which the various members were analyzed are described. A detailed summary of results for the individual structural elements appears in the form of a table of minimum margins of safety. No negative margins of safety were experienced. It is concluded that the component structure is more than adequate to withstand the environmental load conditions given in the design criteria.

Stress Analysis and Fracture in Nanolaminate Composites

A stress analysis is performed on a nanolaminate subjected to bending. A composite mechanics computer code that is based on constituent properties and nanoelement formulation is used to evaluate the nanolaminate stresses. The results indicate that the computer code is sufficient for the analysis. The results also show that when a stress concentration is present, the nanolaminate stresses exceed their corresponding matrix-dominated strengths and the nanofiber fracture strength.

Thermal stress analysis of space shuttle orbiter wing skin panel and thermal protection system

Preflight thermal stress analysis of the space shuttle orbiter wing skin panel and the thermal protection system (TPS) was performed. The heated skin panel analyzed was rectangular in shape and contained a small square cool region at its center. The wing skin immediately outside the cool region was found to be close to the state of elastic instability in the chordwise direction based on the conservative temperature distribution. The wing skin was found to be quite stable in the spanwise direction. The potential wing skin thermal instability was not severe enough to tear apart the strain isolation pad (SIP) layer. Also, the preflight thermal stress analysis was performed on the TPS tile under the most severe temperature gradient during the simulated reentry heating. The tensile thermal stress induced in the TPS tile was found to be much lower than the tensile strength of the TPS material. The thermal bending of the TPS tile was not severe enough to cause tearing of the SIP layer.
