Active SOC Balancing for a Multi-Chemistry Battery Pack with Reduced Number of Converters: Preprint

In energy storage systems using second-life or multi-chemistry cells, an active state of charge (SOC) balancing system can prolong pack life and enhance performance by utilizing the healthier cells more than those which are heavily degraded. However, the high cost of the active balancing system, particularly in converter-based solutions, prevents their widespread usage. Considering this, existing research has proposed numerous balancing systems utilizing only one converter. However, such systems may compromise the balancing speed too much. Therefore, this work proposes two active balancing systems with a reduced number of converters for 14-16 series-connected cells. One system uses two converters for direct cell-to-cell balancing. The other uses a time-multiplexed approach to exchange energy via an auxiliary low-voltage (LV) bus using four converters. The proposed balancing systems are compared to two baseline systems, a single converter cell-to-cell balancing system, and a 14 converter balancing system with an auxiliary LV bus.

A Machine Learning based Approach of Estimating Equivalent Circuit Model Parameters at Different SoCs of Li-ion Batteries from Voltage Relaxation

Abstract: In this study, an approach of estimating the equivalent circuit model (ECM) parameters for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is proposed based on the voltage value at different intervals while relaxing the LIB after discharge. The typical approach for estimating ECM parameters of a LIB is to conduct electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at different frequencies and fit them to a predefined circuit model, which requires additional measuring arrangements and specialized devices. The proposed methodology utilizes four different voltages at 0s, 60s, 360s, and 1800s alongside the specific state of charge (SoC) value for a specific constant discharge current value of ~1C until the relaxation stage to train and evaluate three regression-based machine learning models— Support Vector Regression (SVR), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR)—for estimating the ECM parameters of the selected model. Bayesian optimization is employed for hyperparameter tuning to achieve optimal performance for all the regressor models, among which, the GPR provided the best performance with the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of less than 4x10-4 on average for the resistive components and less than 0.27 for capacitive components with excellent R2 scores. The simplicity of the approach enables it to eliminate the need for sophisticated measuring equipment and computation power.

AmeriFlux AmeriFlux CR-SoC Soltis Center

This is the AmeriFlux version of the carbon flux data for the site CR-SoC Soltis Center. Site Description - The Texas A&M Soltis Center for Research and Education is located in San Juan de Peñas Blancas, San Ramón, Costa Rica. In 2009, Charles W. "Bill" and Wanda Soltis donated a new facility to the university and granted it a long-term lease on the adjacent 250 acres of land. The site hosts both primary and secondary growth rainforest, the later of which was selectively logged between the 1950's and the 1990's. It is best classified as a lower montane forest, located in the transitional area between the upper and lower montane cloud forests and the lowland rainforests. Temperatures average 23°C with 4200 mm/yr of rainfall; a short drier period typically occurs between January and April. Estimates suggest that the site hosts more than 2000 species of vascular plants, with dominant vegetation types including plants in the Sapotaceae, Moracea, and Malvaceae families.

Radiation specification and testing of heterogenous microprocessor SOCs

Modern commercial microprocessor devices include multiple processor architectures, buses, basic peripherals, and application hardware such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) in one device. Developing RHBD versions of similar devices risks sacrificing processing performance for system-wide radiation requirements. The heterogenous structure of modern commercial system on a chip (SOC) devices, in design and performance goals for subsystems, suggests a similar approach to specifying Radiation Hardened by Design (RHBD) requirements.

Apparatus and method for determining state of change (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of electrical cells

Systems and methods for prediction of state of charge (SOH), state of health (SOC) and other characteristics of batteries using acoustic signals, includes determining acoustic data at two or more states of charge and determining a reduced acoustic data set representative of the acoustic data at the two or more states of charge. The reduced acoustic data set includes time of flight (TOF) shift, total signal amplitude, or other data points related to the states of charge. Machine learning models use at least the reduced acoustic dataset in conjunction with non-acoustic data such as voltage and temperature for predicting the characteristics of any other independent battery.

MEPHESTO: Modeling Energy-Performance in Heterogeneous SoCs and Their Trade-Offs

Integrated shared memory heterogeneous architectures are pervasive because they satisfy the diverse needs of mobile, autonomous, and edge computing platforms. Although specialized processing units (PUs) that share a unified system memory improve performance and energy efficiency by reducing data movement, they also increase contention for this memory since the PUs interact with each other. Prior work has investigated performance degradation due to memory contention, but few have studied the relationship of power and energy to memory contention. Moreover, a comprehensive solution that models memory contention for kernel placement on contemporary heterogeneous systems on chip (SoCs) in response to energy and performance has been largely unaddressed. This paper presents MEPHESTO, a novel and holistic approach for managing this balance. The authors characterize applications and PUs in terms of two memory contention factors - time factors and power factors - to achieve the desired trade-off between energy and performance for collocated kernel execution on heterogeneous systems. The authors believe that this investigation is the first to combine all of these factors and present a simple knob-based approach that expresses the target trade-off. The approach is evaluated on a diverse integrated shared memory heterogeneous system with a CPU, GPU, and programmable vision accelerator. By using an empirical model for memory contention that provides up to 92% accuracy, the kernel collocation approach can provide a near-optimal ordering and placement based on the user-defined, energy-performance trade-off parameter. Moreover, the dynamic programming-based heuristics provide up to 30% better energy or 20% performance benefits when compared with the greedy approaches commonly employed by previous studies.

Toward Performance Portable Programming for Heterogeneous System-on-Chips: Case Study with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC

Future heterogeneous Domain-Specific System-on-Chips (DSSoC) will be extraordinarily complex in terms of processors, memory hierarchies, and interconnection networks. To manage this complexity, architects, system software designers, and application developers need programming technologies that are flexible, accurate, efficient, and productive. These technologies will need to be as independent of any one specific architecture as is practical, because the sheer dimensionality and scale of the complexity will not allow porting and optimizing applications foreach given DSSoC. To address these issues, we are developing Cosmic Castle, a performance portable programming toolchain for streaming applications on heterogeneous architectures. The primary focus of Cosmic Castle is on enabling efficient and performant code generation through the smart compiler and intelligent runtime system. This paper presents the preliminary evaluation of our ongoing work toward Cosmic Castle. Specifically, we detail our code porting efforts and evaluate various benchmarks on the Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC using tools developed through Cosmic Castle.
