Thermal Gradient and Neutron Irradiation Experiment Design for Fusion Reactor Materials in the Advanced Test Reactor

This work outlines a hypothetical coupled thermal gradient and neutron irradiation experiment in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Laboratory. Although the ATR is a thermal spectrum test reactor and doesn’t inherently produce a flux spectrum dominated by the high-energy neutrons typical in a fusion reactor, it’s multitude of experiment positions and dynamic flux environment make it a suitable platform for investigating fusion related issues.

Design Basis Model for Hosting Small Modular Reactors

An aggressive transition from fossil fuels to other types of energy implies the need to construct a large number of nuclear power plants in the near future. However, the real and perceived risks of nuclear energy remain a significant impediment to this transition. This paper describes a comprehensive work process that combines the rigor of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with 1) the Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) decades of experience with small reactors and with 2) modern project delivery processes. The objective is to reduce the risk of building new facilities or converting existing facilities to nuclear power generation.

Experimental analysis of gas dynamics in the reactor cavity section of a High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor during an accident scenario

Here, this study investigates the behavior of a High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) during a break of the helium pressure boundary event. Understanding the gas dynamics that occur during a break could help develop safety systems that reduce the probability of air entering the reactor core. To achieve this objective, experimental studies were conducted in a scaled-down HTGR experimental facility to provide information on the air-helium gas mixture within the confinement building and the impact of the ventilation system on the helium/air gas concentration following the depressurization event. The study evaluated different configurations, including active ventilation time scales, break sizes, and locations. The analysis of the active ventilation time revealed that a ventilation time of 22 seconds produced positive results, and smaller break sizes resulted in longer depressurization times, which improved the ventilation process. The orientation and elevation of the breaks had little effect on the oxygen concentration in the cavity but did impact the gas velocities.

Towards the Development of Molten Salt Reactor Multiphysics Modeling Capabilities: Depletion, Thermochemistry, Reactor Dynamics, and Species Tracking

This report documents the simulation and modeling work performed under the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program, utilizing the tools and codes developed under the program. The focus in this Fiscal Year (FY) is on the depletion, thermochemistry, reactor dynamics, and species transport in MSRs. The fission products travelling in the entire primary loop is unique in MSRs. There are many physical/chemical mechanisms that can significantly affect the fission products concentration in the fuel salt, e.g., diffusion into gas bubbles, diffusion in the core moderators, deposition on the surface of structures/pipes, etc. The fission product concentration in the fuel salt can potentially affect the neutronics, system dynamics, chemical potentials, etc., so accurately predicting the fission products distribution in the primary loop is important. Under the main objective, different activities are pursued to assess the NEAMS tools applicability for a variety of areas on species transport, including the depletion analyses using Griffin (fission product source), the redox potential assessment at different depletion points, the assessment of xenon transport effect on the neutronics and reactor dynamics, a survey of correlations for calculating the mass transfer coefficient of different fission products, etc.

Neutron capture measurements at UMass lowell research reactor

A new facility was designed around the thermal column beam port of the 1 MW Research Reactor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Thermal neutrons are collimated to a 1-inch diameter beam and incident on samples to induce the radiative neutron capture. New measurements of capture gamma rays are planned for Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Gd samples in the next few years. The experiments will be carried out in close collaboration with the ENSDF (Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File) evaluation group at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The gamma rays are measured using an array of high-resolution HPGe detectors. Some of the HPGe detectors use active Compton shields that were designed from scintillation detectors and improve significantly the signal-to-background in the measured gamma-ray spectra with HPGe. The experimental spectra will be validated by the GEANT4 simulations of the array and theoretical models of the emission of gamma rays from the compound nucleus. In conclusion, the new experimental results on the capture gamma ray intensities will be incorporated in future ENSDF evaluations.

Design of energy-storage reactors for single-winding constant-frequency dc-to-dc converters operating in the discontinuous-reactor-current mode

This paper presents an algorithm and equations for designing the energy-storage reactor for dc-to-dc converters which are constrained to operate in the discontinuous-reactor-current mode. This design procedure applied to the three widely used single-winding configurations: the voltage step-up, the current step-up, and the voltage-or-current step-up converters. A numerical design example is given to illustrate the use of the design algorithm and design equations.

Chemical Reactor Network Modeling of Ammonia Rich-Quench-Lean Combustion Using a Partially Stirred Reactor Approach

Ammonia is a promising alternative fuel, but its use is challenging due to low flammability and high nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Two-stage rich-quench-lean (RQL) combustion strategies have shown promise in reducing NOx emissions. This approach involves two stages: a rich stage that oxidizes part of the fuel and decomposes ammonia into hydrogen, and a lean stage that burns out the hydrogen and residual ammonia. Researchers used a chemical reactor network model to study the effects of heat loss and mixing on emissions performance. They found that heat loss and reduced mixing rates can lead to increased NOx emissions and N2O formation. The results will inform the development of optimized two-stage RQL combustors for ammonia, with a focus on minimizing NOx emissions and improving overall efficiency.

Management of Risks Associated with Application of Novel Materials in Novel Operating Environments in Novel Reactor Designs

There is currently no widely agreed, detailed general method for licensing a novel plant incorporating novel materials (or materials being deployed in novel environments); in many such situations, there are no directly applicable engineering code cases for decision-makers (including regulators) to rely on. This paper discusses a framework for solving this problem that is based on the Reliability and Integrity Management (RIM) approach delineated in ASME BPVC Section XI Division 2. NRC Regulatory Guide 1.246, Rev. 0, endorses, with conditions, the subject portion of the ASME Code. The proposed framework is meant to support development of a licensing case by addressing certain technical challenges. The framework discussed here is compatible with the Licensing Modernization Project, but applying it in a specific case will call for advances in the state of practice, if not the state of the art. The RIM approach calls for applicants to (a) allocate reliability targets to plant structures, systems, and components (SSCs), (b) show that they are able to relate the currently observed physical condition of each SSC in the program to its failure probability well enough to determine whether the target reliability allocations are being satisfied, allowing for uncertainty related to the novelty of the materials/designs/operating environments, and (c) be able to demonstrate that the proposed program of surveillances will reliably detect unacceptable degradation of an SSC before SSC failure occurs. These challenges are discussed in the paper, and a potentially applicable modeling approach based on cumulative damage rather than failure rates is briefly illustrated.

Advanced Test Reactor Neutron Dosimetry Report - Cycle 175C: Results of Neutron Dosimetry Measurements for the Advanced Test Reactor Cycle 175C

Results of neutron dosimetry measurements in ATR for cycle 175C are presented. A single set of cobalt and nickel wires were installed in numerous irradiation locations for the duration of the cycle. The specific activity of these wire segments can be used in conjunction with the presented cycle history information to determine the thermal- and fast-neutron fluence rates for each irradiation position during the cycle using the referenced standard test methods.
