Cation Data for the East River Watershed, Colorado (2014-2025)

This data package contains mean values for cation concentration for water samples taken from the East River Watershed in Colorado. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been used to measure the concentrations of elements of interest simultaneously for the East River Watershed, Colorado groundwater and surface water samples to inform insights on the biogeochemistry processes within the watershed. The East River is part of the Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (WFSFA) located in the Upper Colorado River Basin, United States. For samples collected prior to 06-16-2021, the instrumentation, Elan DRC II, PerkinElmer SCIEX, automatically switches among the three models necessary to analyze all 37 elements. These 37 elements include: (1) Lithium (Li), Beryllium (Be), Boron (B), Sodium (Na), Magnesium (Mg), Aluminium (Al), Silicon (Si), Phosphorus (P), Titanium (Ti), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Germanium (Ge), Arsenic (As), Rubidium (Rb), Strontium (Sr), Zirconium (Zr), Molybdenum (Mo), Silver (Ag), Cadmium (Cd), Tin (Sn), Antimony (Sb), Caesium (Cs), Barium (Ba), Europium (Eu), Lead (Pb), Thorium (Th), Uranium (U) using standard model, argon Ar as reaction gas, (2) Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Vanadium (V), Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe) using dynamic reaction cell (DRC) model, ammonia NH3 as reaction gas, and (3) Phosphorus (P) and Selenium (Se) using DRC model, oxygen O2 as reaction gas. Chemical fractionations in meteorites. V - Volatile and siderophile elements in achondrites and ocean ridge basalts.

Eighteen achondrites and 4 terrestrial basalts (3 ocean ridge, 1 continental) were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, Ga, In, Ir, Rb, Se, Tl and Zn. Samples included 7 eucrites, 5 howardites, 2 nakhlites, 2 shergottites, an angrite, and an aubrite. Light and dark portions of the gas-rich meteorites Kapoeta and Pesyanoe were analyzed separately. Nakhlites and shergottites have volatile element abundances similar to those in ocean ridge basalts; eucrites, howardites, and angrites show greater depletions by an order of magnitude and less similar abundance patterns. In terms of a two-component model of planetary accretion, the parent planets contained the following percentages of low-temperature material: eucrites 0.8, nakhlites 38, shergottites 28. Shergottites may be genetically related to L-chondrites. The siderophile element pattern of achondrites resembles that of the moon, but with less extreme depletions.

How correlations change the magnetic structure factor of the kagome Hubbard model

The kagome Hubbard model (KHM) is a paradigmatic example of a frustrated two-dimensional model. While its strongly correlated regime, described by a Heisenberg model, is of topical interest due to its enigmatic prospective spin-liquid ground state, the weakly and moderately correlated regimes remain largely unexplored. Motivated by the rapidly growing number of metallic kagome materials (e.g., Mn 3 Sn, Fe 3 Sn 2 , FeSn, Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , Gd 3 Ru 4 Al 12 , and AV 3 Sb 5 with A = K, Rb, Cs), here we study the respective regimes of the KHM by means of three complementary numerical methods: the dynamical mean-field theory, the dynamical vertex approximation, and determinant quantum Monte Carlo. In contrast to the archetypal square lattice, we find no tendencies toward magnetic ordering, as magnetic correlations remain short-range. Nevertheless, the magnetic correlations undergo a remarkable crossover as the system approaches the metal-to-insulator transition. The Mott transition itself does not affect the magnetic correlations. Our equal-time and dynamical structure factors can be used as a reference for inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the growing family of metallic kagome materials.

Radiation Effects on Uranyl Tetrachloro Coordination Compounds: Impact of Lattice Water

Nuclear materials, such as uranium-bearing solids, are exposed to high levels of ionizing radiation throughout the nuclear fuel cycle; thus, it is important to develop a molecular-level understanding of how these materials behave and degrade in the presence of gamma (γ) irradiation. In the current study, three U(VI) tetrachloride complexes, M 2 [UO 2 Cl 4 ]·xH 2 O (where M = K + , Rb + , or Cs + and x = 0 or 2), and their respective chloride salts were exposed to 1–50 kGy of γ radiation using a 60 Co source. Irradiated materials were evaluated by using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Raman spectroscopy and were further explored by using density functional theory (DFT) methods. EPR spectra of the irradiated materials suggest the formation of a Cl-based radical for both the alkali salts and the uranyl tetrachloride compounds, and DFT calculations provide evidence that the Cl 2 –• radical is formed within these materials. The presence of water in the K + and Rb + compounds leads to additional spectroscopic signatures that could be traced back to water radiolysis and the formation of peroxide and superoxide species. DFT results support the formation of HO 2 • in the lattice and potentially the formation of a [UO 2 Cl 3 (O 2 )] 3– species, highlighting the impact of water within the hydrated material to alter U(VI) speciation by radiolysis.
