Test characteristics of a welded rotor in a 36,000-rpm Lundell alternator

Two four-pole Lundell-type rotors consisting of magnetic and nonmagnetic materials were fabricated by weld-depositing Inconel 625 between two sections of AISI 4617 steel. The rotors had a major diameter of 8.28 cm (3.26 in.). Saturation curves for load and no-load conditions with one of the rotors installed in a 1200-Hz Brayton-cycle research alternator are presented. The other identical rotor was spin-tested to a speed of 63,000 rmp, which was equal to 175 percent of the rated speed.

Attitude determination techniques for Nimbus 6 and Nimbus G

Techniques for measuring attitude deviations in the Nimbus 6 and Nimbus G 3-axis stabilized, zero-momentum, earth observation satellites are presented. The on-orbit telemetered data include scanner roll and pitch error signals, an illuminated DSAS which can read the azimuth and elevation of the sunline when the spacecraft is not in the umbra, the signal from the single gyro in the RMP, and the momenta of the reaction wheels. Mathematical methods for interpreting the measured data are described with attention to filter equations, especially the Kalman filter because of its ability to eliminate high frequency noise.

Some influences of touch and pressure cues on human spatial orientation

In order to evaluate the influences of touch and pressure cues on human spatial orientation, blindfolded subjects were exposed to 30 rmp rotation about the Z-axis of their bodies while the axis was horizontal or near horizontal. It was found that the manipulation of pressure patterns to which the subjects are exposed significantly influences apparent orientation. When provided with visual information about actual orientation the subjects will eliminate the postural illusions created by pressure-cue patterns. The localization of sounds is dependent of the apparent orientation and the actual pattern of auditory stimulation. The study provides a basis for investigating: (1) the postural illusions experienced by astronauts in orbital flight and subjects in the free-fall phase of parabolic flight, and (2) the spatial-constancy mechanisms distinguishing changes in sensory afflux conditioned by a subject's movements in relation to the environment, and those conditioned by movements of the environment.

Experimental performance and analysis of 15.04-centimeter-tip-diameter, radial-inflow turbine with work factor of 1.126 and thick blading

The aerodynamic design, the performance, and an internal loss breakdown were examined for a 15.04 cm tip diameter, radial-inflow turbine. The design application was to drive a two stage, 10 to 1 pressure ratio compressor with a mass flow of 0.952 kg/sec and a rotative speed of 70,000 rmp. The turbine inlet temperature was 1478 K, and the turbine was designed with blades thick enough for internal cooling passages. The rotor tip diameter was limited to 86 percent of optimum in order to obtain a reduced tip speed design. The turbine was fabricated with solid, uncooled blading and tested in air at nominal inlet pressure and temperature of 1.379 x 10000 N/sq m and 322.2 K, respectively. Results indicated the turbine total efficiency to be 5.3 points less than design. Analysis of these results has indicated the deficit in performance to be due to stator secondary flow losses, vaneless space surface friction losses, and trailing edge wake mixing losses.

High-Pressure Hot-Gas Self-Acting Floating Ring Shaft Seal for Liquid Rocket Turbopumps

Design analysis, detail design, fabrication, and experimental evaluation was performed on two self acting floating ring shaft seals for a rocket engine turbopump high pressure 24132500 n/sq m (3500 psig) hot gas 533 K 9500 F) high speed 3142 rad/sec (30000 rmp) turbine. The initial design used Rayleigh step hydrodynamic lift pads to assist in centering the seal ring with minimum rubbing contact. The final design used a convergent tapered bore to provide hydrostatic centering force. The Rayleigh step design was tested for 107 starts and 4.52 hours total. The leakage was satisfactory; however, the design was not acceptable due to excessive wear caused by inadequate centering force and failure of the sealing dam caused by erosion damage. The tapered bore design was tested for 370 starts and 15.93 hours total. Satisfactory performance for the required life of 7.5 hours per seal was successfully demonstrated.

Parallel conjugate gradient algorithms for manipulator dynamic simulation

Parallel conjugate gradient algorithms for the computation of multibody dynamics are developed for the specialized case of a robot manipulator. For an n-dimensional positive-definite linear system, the Classical Conjugate Gradient (CCG) algorithms are guaranteed to converge in n iterations, each with a computation cost of O(n); this leads to a total computational cost of O(n sq) on a serial processor. A conjugate gradient algorithms is presented that provide greater efficiency using a preconditioner, which reduces the number of iterations required, and by exploiting parallelism, which reduces the cost of each iteration. Two Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) algorithms are proposed which respectively use a diagonal and a tridiagonal matrix, composed of the diagonal and tridiagonal elements of the mass matrix, as preconditioners. Parallel algorithms are developed to compute the preconditioners and their inversions in O(log sub 2 n) steps using n processors. A parallel algorithm is also presented which, on the same architecture, achieves the computational time of O(log sub 2 n) for each iteration. Simulation results for a seven degree-of-freedom manipulator are presented. Variants of the proposed algorithms are also developed which can be efficiently implemented on the Robot Mathematics Processor (RMP).
