Thermogravimetric-quadrupole mass-spectrometric analysis of geochemical samples.

Thermogravimetric-quadrupole mass-spectrometric-analysis techniques can be used to study a wide variety of problems involving decomposition processes and identification of released volatile components. A recording vacuum thermoanalyzer has been coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The rapid scan capabilities of the quadrupole mass spectrometer are used to identify the gaseous components released. The capability of the thermogravimetric-quadrupole mass spectrometer to provide analytical data for identification of the released volatile components, for determination of their sequence of release and for correlation of thermal-decomposition studies is illustrated by an analysis of the Orgueil carbonaceous chondrite.

Geometry and properties of the plasma in a quadrupole ion pump

The diameter of the plasma in a quadrupole ionization gauge and quadrupole ion pump has been measured as a function of pressure. The radio-frequency quadrupole systems are tuned in such a way that electrons remain on stable trajectories in the center of the tube. Being emitted at one end, the electrons encounter an inverted field at the other end so that they travel on spiral paths back and forth until they collide with the rest gas molecules, producing ions which are collected as an ion current at a cylinder surrounding the four hyperbolically shaped quadrupole electrodes.

The importance of quadrupole sources in prediction of transonic tip speed propeller noise

A theoretical analysis is presented for the harmonic noise of high speed, open rotors. Far field acoustic radiation equations based on the Ffowcs-Williams/Hawkings theory are derived for a static rotor with thin blades and zero lift. Near the plane of rotation, the dominant sources are the volume displacement and the rho U(2) quadrupole, where u is the disturbance velocity component in the direction blade motion. These sources are compared in both the time domain and the frequency domain using two dimensional airfoil theories valid in the subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speed ranges. For nonlifting parabolic arc blades, the two sources are equally important at speeds between the section critical Mach number and a Mach number of one. However, for moderately subsonic or fully supersonic flow over thin blade sections, the quadrupole term is negligible. It is concluded for thin blades that significant quadrupole noise radiation is strictly a transonic phenomenon and that it can be suppressed with blade sweep. Noise calculations are presented for two rotors, one simulating a helicopter main rotor and the other a model propeller. For the latter, agreement with test data was substantially improved by including the quadrupole source term.

The influence of quadrupole sources in the boundary layer and wake of a blade on helicopter rotor noise

It is presently noted that, for an observer in or near the plane containing a helicopter rotor disk, and in the far field, part of the volume quadrupole sources, and the blade and wake surface quadrupole sources, completely cancel out. This suggests a novel quadrupole source description for the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation which retain quadrupoles with axes parallel to the rotor disk; in this case, the volume and shock surface sourse terms are dominant.

Multi-Pass Quadrupole Mass Analyzer

Analysis of the composition of planetary atmospheres is one of the most important and fundamental measurements in planetary robotic exploration. Quadrupole mass analyzers (QMAs) are the primary tool used to execute these investigations, but reductions in size of these instruments has sacrificed mass resolving power so that the best present-day QMA devices are still large, expensive, and do not deliver performance of laboratory instruments. An ultra-high-resolution QMA was developed to resolve N2 +/CO+ by trapping ions in a linear trap quadrupole filter. Because N2 and CO are resolved, gas chromatography columns used to separate species before analysis are eliminated, greatly simplifying gas analysis instrumentation. For highest performance, the ion trap mode is used. High-resolution (or narrow-band) mass selection is carried out in the central region, but near the DC electrodes at each end, RF/DC field settings are adjusted to allow broadband ion passage. This is to prevent ion loss during ion reflection at each end. Ions are created inside the trap so that low-energy particles are selected by low-voltage settings on the end electrodes. This is beneficial to good mass resolution since low-energy particles traverse many cycles of the RF filtering fields. Through Monte Carlo simulations, it is shown that ions are reflected at each end many tens of times, each time being sent back through the central section of the quadrupole where ultrahigh mass filtering is carried out. An analyzer was produced with electrical length orders of magnitude longer than its physical length. Since the selector fields are sized as in conventional devices, the loss of sensitivity inherent in miniaturizing quadrupole instruments is avoided. The no-loss, multi-pass QMA architecture will improve mass resolution of planetary QMA instruments while reducing demands on the RF electronics for high-voltage/high-frequency production since ion transit time is no longer limited to a single pass. The QMA-based instrument will thus give way to substantial reductions of the mass of flight instruments.

Electric field gradients at rubidium sites in rubidium uranyl nitrate and quadrupole moments of 85 Rb and 87 Rb

The electronic structure along the axial direction of the uranyl ion in rubidium uranyl nitrate (RbUO 2 (NO 3 ) 3 ) has been studied by nuclear quadrupole resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of 85 Rb and 87 Rb quadrupole couplings. Here, the parameter of interest in these experiments is the electric field gradient at the Rb sites, which may be compared with values com- puted by various theoretical approaches. From this analysis an accurate ratio of the quadrupole moments of 85 Rb and 87 Rb has also been obtained.

Quadrupole Effects in the Photoionisation of Sodium 3s in the Vicinity of the Dipole Cooper Minimum

A procedure to obtain relativistic expressions for photoionisation angular distribution parameters using the helicity formulation is discussed for open-shell atoms. Electric dipole and quadrupole transition matrix elements were considered in the present work, to study the photoionisation dynamics of the 3s electron of the sodium atom in the vicinity of the dipole Cooper minimum. We studied dipole–quadrupole interference effects on the photoelectron angular distribution in the region of the dipole Cooper minimum. Interference with quadrupole transitions was found to alter the photoelectron angular distribution, even at rather low photon energies. The initial ground and final ionised state discrete wavefunctions of the atom were obtained in the present work using GRASP, and we employed RATIP with discrete wavefunctions, to construct continuum wavefunctions and to calculate transition amplitudes, total cross-sections and angular distribution asymmetry parameters.

A survey of nuclear quadrupole deformation in order to estimate the nuclear MQM and its relative contribution to the atomic EDM: Searching for the best candidate to focus on an atomic EDM measurement: A nuclear physics perspective

Abstract Measurement of a non-zero permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) in fundamental particles, such as in an electron or a neutron, or in nuclei or atoms, can help us gain a handle on the sources of Charge-Parity (CP) violation, both in the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. The nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM), the central topic of this work, is also CP, P, and T violating. Nucleons and nuclei have a non-zero MQM from sources within the SM, but the nuclear MQM is dramatically enhanced if the nuclei are structurally quadrupole deformed. Multiple sources contribute to an atomic EDM namely: (i) nuclear EDM through its Schiff moment, which is enhanced by nuclear octupole deformation, (ii) CP violating interactions between the electrons and the nuclei, and (iii) the nuclear MQM that contributes to the atomic EDM in atoms with an unpaired valence electron. Our survey of nuclear quadrupole deformation identified 48 isotopes as ideal systems in which to search for a CP violating EDM via their enhanced nuclear MQM. Of these candidates, $$^{223,225}$$ 223 , 225 Fr, $$^{223}$$ 223 Ra, $$^{223,225,227}$$ 223 , 225 , 227 Ac, $$^{229}$$ 229 Th, and $$^{229}$$ 229 Pa also have maximally enhanced nuclear Schiff moment contribution due to their octupole deformation. Laser cooling of the isotopes of Fr and Ra, among a few others, has already been demonstrated, making $$^{223,225}$$ 223 , 225 Fr and $$^{223}$$ 223 Ra some of the best systems in which to measure an EDM.

Effect of CLIQ on Training of HL-LHC Quadrupole Magnets

The high-luminosity LHC upgrade requires stronger than LHC low-beta quadrupole magnets to reach the luminosity goals of the project. The project is well advanced and HL-LHC quadrupole magnets are currently being commissioned in US Labs (MQXFA magnets) and CERN (MQXFB magnets). Those are the first Nb 3 Sn magnets to be used in any large particle accelerator. At development stages, many Nb 3 Sn accelerator sub-scale models showed relatively slow training and MQXFA magnets were projected to have low tens of quenches before reaching operational field. Recently it was shown that dedicated capacitor-based de-vices can affect Nb 3 Sn magnet training, and it was suggested that CLIQ, a capacitor-based device intended for quench protection, can do too. Here, the present paper investigates effects on training likely induced by CLIQ, using the base fact that only half the coils in a quadrupole experience upward current modulation at quench because of capacitor discharge. The study encompasses all MQXFA production magnets trained at BNL to date. No other high-statistics data from identical magnets (series) with CLIQ protection exist so far. Implications and opportunities stemming from data analysis are discussed and conclusions drawn.

Benchmarking the Use of BPM Quadrupole Moments to Measure Emittance

For the PIP-II program, transverse emittance in the Fermilab Booster must remain well controlled at higher bunch intensities. 4-plate beam position monitors (BPMs) have a small but measurable quadrupole moment, making it possible to infer transverse emittance. By compositing many BPMs together, it becomes possible to improve the quality of the quadrupole signal. The Fermilab Booster BPM system has been used to measure these quadrupole moments in the past year and derive emittances from them. Recent benchmarks show that the derived BPM emittances show similar emittance evolution and value to IPM and Multiwire data. This approach can both supplement and complement existing non-intercepting emittance monitors in accelerators.

Tunable Permanent Magnet Quadrupole Operating at Cryogenic Temperatures for Accelerators

The project objective is to develop a compact and tunable quadrupole using Electron Energy Corporation (EEC)’s PM materials for cryogenic accelerator applications. To achieve this objective, EEC and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) will collaborate to develop a cost-effective quadrupole and optimize the conventional manufacturing process. Based on previous experience, EEC designed an innovative field adjustment capability using tuning magnets which is able to achieve all the requirements for SLAC’s cold copper collider (C3 ) application. These novel ideas enable us to develop a compact and tunable quadrupole magnet superior to the current designs. Our approach is to leverage EEC's over 50 years of experience in magnet manufacturing and SLAC’s beamline test capabilities.

Systematic Errors Induced by Dipole Component Change in Quadrupole Beam-Based Alignment Measurements for Circular Accelerators

Beam-based alignment (BBA) for quadrupole magnets is now a well-established process for circular accelerators to steer beam orbit through the magnetic centers such that beam orbit is not disturbed when the gradients of quadrupoles are changed. At some facilities, the centers estimated from BBA techniques are also used as a proxy for steering beam through the centers of nearby nonlinear magnets to minimize degradation of nonlinear dynamics caused by off-centered orbit. The random errors associated with BBA are well known, but very little attention has been paid to the systematic error generated by a dipole component change, or equivalently a shift in the magnetic center, when the quadrupole strength is varied. The analytical formulas for this error and its amplification factor (potentially a few orders of magnitude) with respect to the magnetic center motion have been derived and confirmed with simulations. We address the significance of this error as well as the part that cannot be estimated from the beam-based measurement alone. Finally, the BBA measurements obtained at NSLS-II and their systematic errors on the order of hundreds of microns are discussed.

Estimation of dipole-quadrupole dispersion energies.

The calculation of the dipole-quadrupole dispersion coefficient is discussed through a perturbation and a variation method. Accurate combination rules are obtained from both methods, one new and one already known. Further approximations permit computations in terms of accessible parameters. Values are calculated for the interactions of atomic pairs formed from hydrogen, alkali, and rare-gas atoms. A new relation giving the dipole-quadrupole coefficient in terms of the dipole-dipole coefficient and the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities seems accurate, but needs further testing.

Quadrupole moment of CO, N2, and NO/+/

Evaluation of quadrupole moments obtained for CO, N2, and NO(+) with multiconfiguration self-consistent-field wave functions chosen by the optimized valence configuration (OVC) approach of Wahl and Das (1972). The quadrupole moments thus obtained are compared with both experimental and Hartree-Fock values. The Hartree-Fock results are found to be not very accurate for N2, especially if vibrational averages over vibrational levels greater than 1 or 2 are to be taken. The agreement between the OVC quadrupole moment and the experimental values is found to be best for CO.

Dipole and quadrupole anisotropy of the 2.7 K radiation

Results of measurements of the dipole and quadrupole anisotropy of the microwave background radiation are reported. Balloon-borne measurements of the temperature difference between two horn antennas pointed 90 deg apart and 45 deg from the zenith were carried out at frequencies of 24.8, 31.4 and 46.0 GHz to determine three dipole and four quadrupole parameters. When combined with data from two previous balloon flights, a dipole anisotropy of 3.78 + or - 0.30 mK in the direction 11.6 + or - 0.2 h RA, -12 + or - 5 deg dec is obtained. The measurements reveal a spectral index of 0.04 + or - 0.28 between 19.0 and 46.0 GHz, indicating that the dipole effect arises from an intrinsic anisotropy in the temperature of the background and/or a first-order Doppler shift due to solar motions. A statistically significant quadrupole effect is also detected which is attributed to the intrinsic anisotropy of the 2.7 K background.

Laboratory Automation of a Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer

Efforts directed toward interfacing an LSI II bus of a PDP 11/23 desktop computer with a quadrupole mass spectrometer for the purpose of providing a convenient system whereby mass spectral data, of the products of thermal decomposition, may be rapidly acquired and processed under programmed conditions are described. The versatility and operations of the quadrupole mass spectrometer are discussed as well as the procedure for configurating the LSI II bus of the PDP 11/23 desktop computer for interfacing with the quadrupole mass spectrometer system. Data from the mass filter and other units of the spectrometer are digitally transferred to the computer whereupon mass spectral data and related data are generated.

Theoretical electric quadrupole transition probabilities for Ca, Sr and Ba

The 1D-1S quadrupole transition probabilities for Ca, Sr and Ba have been computed using extended GTO and STO valence basis sets and configuration-interaction wavefunctions that include the important core-valence correlation effects. For Ba and Sr, the relativistic contraction of the core orbitals was accounted for in the GTO calculations by a relativistic effective-core potential. The computed Einstein coefficient for Ca of 39.6/s is in excellent agreement with the recent experimental value of 40 + or - 8/s. The best Einstein coefficients for Sr (44.7/s) and Ba (2.98/s) imply increasing quadrupole line strengths down the column. Relativistic effects substantially increase the quadrupole Einstein coefficient for Ba.
