Intrinsic charm and the 𝐷 + − 𝐷 − asymmetry produced in proton-proton collisions

We investigate the contribution of the charm-anticharm (𝑐⁢$\overline{𝑐}$) asymmetry of the proton eigenstate obtained from QCD lattice gauge to the asymmetry of 𝐷 + , 𝐷 − and 𝐷 0 , $\overline{𝐷}$ 0 mesons produced in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at large Feynman variables 𝑥. It is shown that an important tool for establishing the intrinsic charm (IC) content of the proton is the charm hadron-antihadron asymmetry formed in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions. Predictions for the asymmetry as a function of 𝑥 for different IC probabilities are presented. We show that the interference of the intrinsic |𝑢⁢𝑢⁢𝑑⁢𝑐⁢$\overline{𝑐}$⟩ Fock state with the standard contribution from the perturbative QCD evolution leads to a large 𝐷 + ⁢𝐷 − asymmetry at large Feynman 𝑥.

Basis light-front quantization for the Λ b and Σ b baryons

Within the basis light-front quantization framework, we compute the masses and light-front wave functions of the Λ b baryon and its isospin triplet counterparts Σ b + , Σ b 0 , and Σ b − using a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector. These wave functions are obtained as eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian, which incorporates the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling and a three-dimensional confinement potential. With the quark masses and the couplings as adjustable parameters, the computed masses are set within the experimental range. The resulting predictions for their electromagnetic properties align well with other theoretical calculations. Additionally, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of these baryons are obtained for the first time, with gluon and sea quark distributions dynamically generated through QCD evolution of the valence quark PDFs. A First Step Towards Quantum Simulating Jet Evolution in a Dense Medium

The fast development of quantum technologies over the last decades has offered a glimpse to a future where the quantum properties of multi particle systems might be more fully understood. In particular, quantum computing might prove crucial to explore many aspects of high energy physics unaccessible to classical methods. In this talk, we will describe how one can use digital quantum computers to study the evolution of QCD jets in quark gluons plasmas. We construct a quantum circuit to study single particle evolution in a dense QCD medium. Focusing on the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$, we present some early numerical results for a small quantum circuit. Future extensions of this strategy are also addressed.

New approach to QCD final-state evolution in processes with massive partons

We present an algorithm for massive parton evolution which is based on the differentially accurate simulation of soft-gluon radiation by means of a nontrivial azimuthal angle dependence of the splitting functions. The kinematics mapping is chosen such as to reflect the symmetry of the final state in soft-gluon radiation and collinear splitting processes. We compute the counterterms needed for a fully differential next-to-leading order matching and discuss the analytic structure of the parton shower in the next-to-leading logarithmic limit. We implement the new algorithm in the numerical code Alaric and present a first comparison to experimental data. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Fluctuation dynamics near the QCD critical point

The evolution of nonhydrodynamic slow processes near the QCD critical point is explored with the novel hydro+ framework, which extends the conventional hydrodynamic description by coupling it to additional explicitly evolving slow modes describing long wavelength fluctuations. Here, their slow relaxation is controlled by critical behavior of the correlation length and is independent from gradients of matter density and pressure that control the evolution of the hydrodynamic quantities. In this exploratory study, we follow the evolution of the slow modes on top of a simplified QCD matter background, allowing us to clearly distinguish and study, both separately and in combination, the main effects controlling the dynamics of critical slow modes. In particular, we show how the evolution of the slow modes depends on their wave number, the expansion of and advection by the fluid background, and the behavior of the correlation length. Nonequilibrium contributions from the slow modes to bulk matter properties that affect the bulk dynamics (entropy, pressure, temperature, and chemical potential) are discussed and found to be small.

The SAGEX review on scattering amplitudes Chapter 15: The multi-Regge limit

We review the Regge and multi-Regge limit of scattering amplitudes in gauge theory, focusing on QCD and its maximally supersymmetric cousin, planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang–Mills theory. We identify the large logarithms that are developed in these limits, and the progress that has been made in resumming them, towards next-to-next-to-leading logarithms for BFKL evolution in QCD, as well as all-orders proposals in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang–Mills theory and the perturbative checks of those proposals. We also cover the application of single-valued multiple polylogarithms to this important kinematical limit of particle scattering.

QCD–Gravity Double Copy in Regge Asymptotics: From \(2\rightarrow n\) Amplitudes to Radiation in Shockwave Collisions

This paper discusses multi-particle production in QCD and in gravity at ultrarelativistic energies, their double-copy relations, and strong parallels in emergent shockwave dynamics. Dispersive techniques are applied to derive the BFKL equation for multi-gluon production in Regge asymptotics. Identical methods apply in gravity and are captured by a gravitational Lipatov equation. The building blocks in both cases are Lipatov vertices and reggeized propagators satisfying double-copy relations; in gravity, Weinberg’s soft theorem is recovered as a limit of the Lipatov framework. BFKL evolution in QCD generates wee parton states of maximal occupancy characterized by an emergent semi-hard saturation scale. Renormalization group equations in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) EFT describe wee parton correlations and their rapidity evolution. A shockwave picture of deeply inelastic scattering and hadron–hadron collisions follows, with multi-particle production described by Cutkosky’s rules in strong time-dependent fields. Gluon radiation in the CGC EFT has a double copy in gravitational shockwave collisions, with a similar correspondence applicable between gluon and graviton shockwave propagators. Possible extensions of this semi-classical double copy are outlined for computing multi-particle production in gravitational shockwave collisions, self-force and tidal contributions, and classical and quantum noise in the focusing of geodesics.

Quantum entanglement correlations in double quark PDFs

Methods from Quantum Information Theory are used to scrutinize quantum correlations encoded in the two-quark density matrix over light-cone momentum fractions x 1 and x 2 . A nonperturbative three quark model light-cone wavefunction predicts significant nonclassical correlations associated with the “entanglement negativity” measure for asymmetric and small quark momentum fractions. We perform one step of QCD scale evolution of the entire density matrix, not just its diagonal (dPDF), by computing collinearly divergent corrections due to the emission of a gluon. Finally, we present first qualitative numerical results for single-step scale evolution of quantum entanglement correlations in double quark PDFs. At a higher Q 2 scale, the nonclassical correlations manifest in the dPDF for nearly symmetric momentum fractions.

Electromagnetic & Weak Probes: Experimental Overview

Electromagnetic and electroweak probes are the most versatile probes in the study of heavy-ion collisions. Produced at every stage in the evolution of QCD matter, its messengers are practically inert to the strongly interacting medium they travel through. In this contribution, I will discuss a selection of new results from experiments at the LHC, RHIC, and SIS facilities, spanning almost four orders of magnitude in beam energy. Finally, I will conclude with a brief overview of the experimental landscape in the near future.

Light mesons with one dynamical gluon on the light front

We obtain the light meson mass spectroscopy from the light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Hamiltonian, determined for their constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, together with a three-dimensional confinement. The eigenvectors of the light-front effective Hamiltonian provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, decay constant, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We also show that the pion's gluon densities can be probed through the pion-nucleus induced $J/ψ$ production data. Our pion parton distribution functions provide excellent agreement with $J/ψ$ production data from widely different experimental conditions.

Exploiting Modern C++ for Portable Parallel Programming in Lattice QCD Applications

The evolution of ISO C++ standards increasingly serves the needs of scientific computing, offering potential benefits for developing portable applications. The recent revisions of C++ programming language, for instance, introduces a suite of algorithms capable of being executed on accelerators. Although this approach may not yield best performance, it can present a viable balance between code productivity and computational efficiency. In this report, we discuss the implementation of the HISQ operator utilizing a range of features from the C++17/20/23 standards and include an assessment of their performance.

A light QCD axion with hilltop misalignment

We study the cosmological evolution of a light QCD axion and identify the parameter space to obtain the correct relic dark matter abundance. The axion potential is flattened at the origin, corresponding to the only minimum, while it is unsuppressed at π. These potential features arise by assuming a mirror sector with the strong CP phase $\overline{θ}$ shifted by π compared to the SM sector, which allows the mirror axion potential to be tuned against the usual QCD axion potential. Before the QCD phase transition, assuming the mirror sector is decoupled and much colder than the SM thermal bath, the mirror sector potential dominates, causing the axion to initially roll to a temporary minimum at π. However, after the QCD phase transition, the potential minimum changes, and the axion relaxes from the newly created “hilltop” near π to the CP-conserving minimum at the origin. As the axion adiabatically tracks this shift in the potential minimum through the QCD phase transition, with non-adiabatic evolution near π and 0, it alters the usual prediction of the dark matter abundance. Consequently, this “hilltop” misalignment mechanism opens new regions of axion parameter space, with the correct relic abundance while still solving the strong CP problem, that could be explored in future experiments.

Resurrecting low-mass axion dark matter via a dynamical QCD scale

In the framework where the strong coupling is dynamical, the QCD sector may confine at a much higher temperature than it would in the Standard Model, and the temperature-dependent mass of the QCD axion evolves in a non-trivial way. We find that, depending on the evolution of Λ QCD , the axion field may undergo multiple distinct phases of damping and oscillation leading generically to a suppression of its relic abundance. Such a suppression could therefore open up a wide range of parameter space, resurrecting in particular axion dark-matter models with a large Peccei-Quinn scale f a $\gg$ 10 12 GeV, i.e., with a lighter mass than the standard QCD axion.

Traces of nonequilibrium effects, initial condition, bulk dynamics, and elementary collisions in the charm observables

Heavy quarks produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are known to be sensitive probes of the hot and dense QCD matter they traverse. In this paper we study how their dynamics is affected by the nature of the bulk evolution of the QCD matter, the initial condition of the system, and the treatment of elementary interactions between heavy quarks and the surrounding medium. For the same initial condition and the same quark-gluon plasma (QGP) expansion scenario we discuss the consequences of the assumption of a local equilibrium by comparing the consequences for the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flows of charm quarks, scrutinizing the different components of the final distribution of charm quarks. For this purpose we employ the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) model, which is an off-shell microscopic transport approach, as well as the linearized-Boltzmann (LB) scheme obtained by coarse graining the PHSD bulk and assuming local equilibrium for the interactions of the charm quarks with the bulk. The $R_{AA}$ of charm quarks stemming from the later LB approach is also compared to a genuine fluid dynamics evolution initiated by the coarse grained PHSD, which allows us to further assess the consequences of reducing the full $\textit{n}$-body dynamics. We then proceed to a systematic comparison of PHSD (in its LB approximation) with MC@HQ, another transport model for heavy flavors which also relies on the LB approach. In particular, we investigate the consequences for the nuclear modification factor of charm quarks if we vary separately the initial heavy quark distribution function in matter, the expansion dynamics of the QGP, and the elementary interactions of heavy quarks of these models. We find that the results for both models vary significantly depending on the details of the calculation. However, both models achieve very similar predictions for key heavy quark observables for certain combinations of initial condition, bulk evolution, and interactions. In this work, we conclude that this ambiguity limits our ability to determine the different properties of the system based on the current set of observables.

Determination of crossing-symmetric π π scattering amplitudes and the quark mass evolution of the σ constrained by lattice QCD

Lattice QCD spectra can be used to constrain partial-wave scattering amplitudes that, while satisfying unitarity, do not have to respect crossing symmetry and analyticity. This becomes a particular problem when extrapolated far from real energies, e.g. in the case of broad resonances like the σ , leading to large systematic uncertainties in the pole position. In this manuscript, we will show how dispersion relations can implement the additional constraints, using as input lattice-determined π π partial-wave scattering amplitudes with isospin–0,1,2. We will show that only certain combinations of amplitude parametrizations satisfy all constraints, and that when we restrict to these, the σ pole position is determined with minimal systematic uncertainty. The evolution of the now well-constrained σ pole with varying light quark mass is presented, showing how it transitions from a bound-state to a broad resonance. Unified description of DGLAP, CSS, and BFKL evolution: TMD factorization bridging large and small x

This paper introduces a transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization scheme designed to unify both large and small Bjorken-x regimes. We compute the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics (QCD) corrections to the gluon TMD operator for an unpolarized hadron within this proposed scheme. This leads to the emergence of a new TMD evolution, incorporating those in transverse momentum, rapidity, and Bjorken-x. When matched to the collinear factorization scheme, our factorization scheme faithfully reproduces the well-established Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi and Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) evolutions. Conversely, matching with high-energy factorization not only yields the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov evolution but also reveals distinctive signatures of CSS logarithms. The development of this novel TMD factorization scheme, capable of seamlessly reconciling disparate Bjorken-x regimes and faithfully reproducing established QCD evolution equations, has the potential to significantly advance our comprehension of high-energy processes and three-dimensional parton structures of hadrons.
