Hanford 200 West Area Flowsheet Data to Support Waste Treatment and Disposal Request for Proposal

This report documents the 200 West Area (200W) flowsheet supplemental data needed to support the Request for Proposal (RFP) to procure onsite and/or offsite treatment and disposal capabilities for West Area pretreated1 tank waste (PTW). The data provided in this document is based on the results of a 200W flowsheet model run evaluating single-shell tank (SST) retrievals for all S, SX, and U Farms, except for Tank S-112, which was retrieved in March of 2007 (HNF-EP-0182, Waste Tank Summary Report for Month End August 31, 2024). The evaluation also includes the waste inventory in double-shell tanks (DSTs) in SY Farm.

Directly deposited current collecting grids for AMTEC electrodes

Current collection in electrodes for the alkali metal thermal to electric converter (AMTEC) has been improved by using molybdenum grids to decrease sheet and contact resistance in RhW and PtW electrodes. The grids are directly deposited on the solid electrolyte either by sputter- or photodeposition. Comparison of electrodes having such underlying grids with those without such grids has shown power produced in an AMTEC cell to be increased by as much as 35 percent.

Directly Deposited Current Collecting Grids for Alkali Metal Thermal-to-Electric Converter Electrodes

Current collection in porous thin film electrodes on solid electrolytes has been improved by using thick film grids to decrease sheet and contact resistance in RhW and PtW electrodes. The grids are directly deposited on the solid electrolyte either by sputter- or photodeposition, and the electrode deposited over the grid. Comparison of the performance of electrodes having such underlying grids with that of electrodes without such grids has shown performance, as measured by current or power produced, to be improved by 10-30% in electrodes with grids.

Bubbling Water–Treating DBD Plasma Device Optimization Using Experimental and Computational Methods

A dry air atmospheric pressure volume dielectric barrier discharge is employed to fix nitrogen in water. Producing nitrate for use as nitrogen fertilizer is the primary motivation. A 0D chemistry model is developed and informed by the electrical, and geometric characteristics of the device and the plasma gas temperature. Modeled ozone and nitrate densities are compared to those measured experimentally in the plasma effluent and treated liquid for a range of gas temperatures. Modeled and measured ozone densities are in good agreement; however, the model lacks the liquid chemistry to properly represent the measured nitrate density. A gas temperature-based shift from ozone to NO x producing regimes is observed in both experiment and model, and the reactions responsible are evaluated.

Plasma treating water for nitrate based nitrogen fertilizer - A review of recent device designs

Atmospheric pressure air plasma treatment of water is a promising alternative to the industrially intensive Haber-Bosch process for the production of nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizer is vital for plant life, and the environmental impacts of modern fertilizer application cannot be neglected. In order to maintain or increase food production in the future, more sustainable alternatives must be investigated. Plasma can be easily operated at smaller scales, onsite, utilizing green energy sources, cutting down transportation costs and impacts. This article focuses on nitrogen fixation by plasma treating water for use as nitrogen fertilizer. Here, we highlight recent advances (within the last two years) regarding water treating plasma devices, the challenges still facing the field, and recommend more thorough collaborative investigations be carried out in order to focus on the design and optimization of these devices for the future.
