Absence of a bulk signature of a charge density wave in hard x-ray measurements of UTe 2

The long-sought pair density wave (PDW) is an exotic phase of matter in which charge density wave (CDW) order is intertwined with the amplitude or phase of coexisting, superconducting order. Originally predicted to exist in copper-oxides, circumstantial evidence for PDW order now exists in a variety of materials. Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies have reported evidence for a three-component CDW at the surface of the heavy-fermion superconductor, UTe 2 , persisting below its superconducting transition temperature [Aishwarya et al., Nature 618, 928933 (2023); Gu et al., Nature 618, 921927 (2023); LaFleur et al., Nat. Commun. 15, 4456 (2024)]. Here, in this study, we use hard x-ray diffraction measurements on crystals of UTe 2 at 𝑇 = 1.9 and 12 K to search for a bulk signature of this CDW. Using STM measurements as a constraint, we calculate the expected locations of CDW superlattice peaks and sweep a large volume of reciprocal space in search of a signature. We fail to find any evidence for a CDW near any of the expected superlattice positions in many Brillouin zones. We estimate an upper bound on the CDW lattice distortion of 𝑢 max ≲ 4×10 −3 Å. Our results suggest that the CDW observed in STM is either purely electronic, somehow lacking a signature in the lattice, or is restricted to the material surface.

Emergent pair density wave order across a Lifshitz transition

We numerically investigate the telltale signs of pair-density-wave order (PDW) in the Kondo-Heisenberg chain by focusing on the momentum resolved spectrum in different parameter regimes. Density matrix renormalization group calculations reveal that this phase is characterized by a dispersion with two minima and four Fermi points, indicating the emergence of an effective next-nearest-neighbor hopping that arises as a second-order effect to avoid magnetic frustration. The pairs appear in the spectrum as in-gap bound states with weight concentrated in the hole pockets. The low-energy physics can be understood by means of a generalized t−J model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Our results offer a guide for searching for experimental signatures, and for other models that can realize PDW physics.

Atomic-Scale Visualization of the Cuprate Pair Density Wave State

A recent discovery of the pair density wave (PDW) order creates a stir in understanding an underlying physics in the pseudogap states of the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Recent Spectroscopic Imaging Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM) measurements on Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ identified that spatially uniform d-wave superconductivity (DSC), d-symmetry charge density wave (CDW), and the PDW play important roles in an intertwined fashion. In this paper, we discuss how these different electronic degrees of freedom emerges in electronic structures of the cuprate and discuss how they are related to each other.

Microscopic Theory of Pair Density Waves in Spin-Orbit Coupled Kondo Lattice

We demonstrate that the discommensuration between the Fermi surfaces of a conduction sea and an underlying spin liquid provides a natural mechanism for the spontaneous formation of pair density waves. Using a recent formulation of the Kondo lattice model that incorporates a Yao Lee spin liquid proposed by the authors, we demonstrate that doping away from half filling induces finite-momentum electron-Majorana pair condensation, resulting in amplitude-modulated pair density waves (PDWs). Our approach provides a precise, analytically tractable pathway for understanding the spontaneous formation of PDWs in higher dimensions and offers a natural mechanism for PDW formation in the absence of Zeeman splitting.

Distinguishing finite-momentum superconducting pairing states with two-electron photoemission spectroscopy

Here, we show theoretically that double photoemission (2e-ARPES) may be used to identify the pairing state in superconductors in which the Cooper pairs have a nonzero center-of-mass momentum, q cm . We theoretically evaluate the 2e-ARPES counting rate P (2) for the cases of a d x 2 -y 2 -wave superconductor, a pair-density-wave (PDW) phase, and a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We show that P (2) provides direct insight into the center-of-mass momentum and spin state of the superconducting condensate, and thus can distinguish between these three different superconducting pairing states. In addition, P (2) can be used to map out the momentum dependence of the superconducting order parameter. Our results identify 2e-ARPES as an ideal tool for identifying and probing q cm ≠ 0 superconducting pairing states in superconductors.

Windows Program For Driving The TDU-850 Printer

Program provides WYSIWYG compatibility between video display and printout. PDW is Microsoft Windows printer-driver computer program for use with Raytheon TDU-850 printer. Provides previously unavailable linkage between printer and IBM PC-compatible computers running Microsoft Windows. Enhances capabilities of Raytheon TDU-850 hardcopier by emulating all textual and graphical features normally supported by laser/ink-jet printers and makes printer compatible with any Microsoft Windows application. Also provides capabilities not found in laser/ink-jet printer drivers by providing certain Windows applications with ability to render high quality, true gray-scale photographic hardcopy on TDU-850. Written in C language.
