Differential Cross Sections for Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering

Proton-proton elastic scattering is investigated within the framework of the one pion exchange model in an attempt to model nucleon-nucleon interactions spanning the large range of energies important to cosmic ray shielding. A quantum field theoretic calculation is used to compute both differential and total cross sections. A scalar theory is then presented and compared to the one pion exchange model. The theoretical cross sections are compared to proton-proton scattering data to determine the validity of the models.

On the injection and scattering of protons in Jupiter's magnetosphere

The interaction, scattering, and acceleration of Jovian ions through magnetohydrodynamic waves are investigated. A model of the Alfven speed in the plasma sheet for both inbound and outbound legs of the Voyager 1 encounter is presented, and underlying assumptions are discussed. Theoretical ingredients of a rotationally driven Jovian substorm are defined, and the convective growth rate of the fast wave for both a warm and a cold beam is derived. The mean-free path for scattering based on in situ measurements of magnetic fluctuations in the plasma sheet is estimated, and the results indicate that scattering of super-Alfvenic ions occurs on a regular basis throughout the plasma sheet, and the observed level of magnetic fluctuations is sufficiently high to stop ionospheric protons.

Constraining capture cross sections using proton inelastic scattering as a surrogate reaction

The surrogate reaction method is an alternative to direct measurements of compound nuclear reaction cross sections. We introduce theory tools for extracting capture cross sections from experiments that use proton inelastic scattering as a surrogate reaction mechanism. This makes it possible to constrain compound nucleus decay models which are typically the largest source of uncertainty in capture cross section calculations. This letter describes the theory developments that were used to simultaneously infer 89 Y(p, γ) and 89 Zr(n, γ) cross sections from 90 Zr(p, p′γ) surrogate measurements.

Gluon Sivers function from forward exclusive χ c 1 photoproduction on unpolarized protons

Exclusive production of a χ c 1 axial vector quarkonia in photon-proton scattering at high energies requires a C -odd t -channel exchange. In the limit of vanishing momentum transfer this occurs either via the exchange of a photon, the Primakoff process, where the spin of the proton does not change. For axial-vector meson production, as a consequence of the Landau-Yang theorem, the Primakoff cross section is finite as t → 0 . Alternatively, a C -odd spin dependent Odderon can be exchanged, which involves a spin flip of the proton. The resulting cross section is related to the square of the collinear trigluon correlator or the k ⊥ -moment of the gluon Sivers function. Using two models for the gluon Sivers function from the literature we compute the ratio of Sivers to Primakoff cross sections and the angular coefficient λ θ governing the angular distribution of the χ c 1 → J / ψ + γ decay as functions of x . We point out that these observables constrain the magnitude of the gluon Sivers function at small x which could be accessed in electron-proton scattering and ultraperipheral proton-proton and nucleus-proton collisions. A description of electron heating with an electrostatic potential jump in a parallel, collisionless, fire hose shock

The electron heating required if protons scatter elastically in a parallel, collisionless shock is calculated. Near-elastic proton scattering off large amplitude background magnetic field fluctuations might be expected if the waves responsible for the shock dissipation are generated by the fire hose instability. The effects of an electrostatic potential jump in the shock layer are included by assuming that the energy lost by protons in traversing the potential jump is converted into electron thermal pressure. It is found that the electron temperature increase is a strong function of the potential jump. Comparison is made to the parallel shock plasma simulation of Quest (1987).

Exploring orbital angular momentum and spin-orbit correlations for gluons at the Electron-Ion Collider

In our previous work [S. Bhattacharya , ], we introduced a pioneering observable aimed at experimentally detecting the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of gluons. Our focus was on the longitudinal double spin asymmetry observed in exclusive dijet production during electron-proton scattering. We demonstrated the sensitivity of the cos ϕ angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton as a probe for gluon OAM at small x and its intricate interplay with gluon helicity. This current work provides a comprehensive exposition, diving further into the aforementioned calculation with added elaboration and in-depth analysis. We reveal that, in addition to the gluon OAM, one also gains access to the spin-orbit correlation of gluons. We supplement our work with a detailed numerical analysis of our observables for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider. In addition to dijet production, we also consider the recently proposed semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering process, which potentially offers experimental advantages over dijet measurements. Finally, we investigate quark-channel contributions to these processes and find an unexpected breakdown of collinear factorization. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Pseudo-scalar pi N coupling and relativistic proton-nucleus scattering

Relativistic p-Ca-40 elastic scattering observables are calculated using relativistic NN amplitudes obtained from the solution of a two-body relativistic equation in which one particle is kept on its mass-shell. Results at 200 MeV are presented for two sets of NN amplitudes, one with pure pseudo-vector coupling for the pion and another with a 25 percent admixture of pseudo-scaling coupling. Both give a very good fit to the positive energy on-shell NN data. Differences between the predictions of these two models (which are shown to be due only to the differences in their corresponding negative energy amplitudes) provide a measure of the uncertainty in contructing Dirac optical potentials from NN amplitudes.

Relativistic proton-nucleus scattering and one-boson-exchange models

Relativistic p-(Ca-40) elastic scattering observables are calculated using four sets of relativistic NN amplitudes obtained from different one-boson-exchange (OBE) models. The first two sets are based upon a relativistic equation in which one particle is on mass shell and the other two sets are obtained from a quasipotential reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Results at 200, 300, and 500 MeV are presented for these amplitudes. Differences between the predictions of these models provide a study of the uncertainty in constructing Dirac optical potentials from OBE-based NN amplitudes.
