Recent Progress in the Electroweak Structure of Light Nuclei Using Quantum Monte Carlo Methods

Nuclei will play a prominent role in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model as the active material in experiments. In order to reliably interpret new physics signals, one needs an accurate model of the underlying nuclear dynamics. In this review, we discuss recent progress made with quantum Monte Carlo approaches for calculating the electroweak structure of light nuclei. We place particular emphasis on recent β decay, muon capture, neutrinoless double β decay, and electron scattering results.

Novel Method for Domestic Stable Isotope Production (CRADA #667) Final Report

This report presents the progress achieved on our chlorine isotope separation efforts in the CRADA #667 agreement. We used a microchannel distillation (MCD) packing structure to enrich HCl isotopes (H35Cl, H37Cl) and an isotachophoresis (ITP) separation to enrich ionic chloride species (35Cl- and 37Cl-). A 2 m tall MCD column was constructed and achieved 264 separation stages over several days, which is well above the goal of 50 stages outlined in the CRADA. The resulting height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) was 0.76 cm. ITP tests were run ~ 24 hours and achieved a single-stage separation factor of 1.559.

Superconductivity in Ruddlesden–Popper nickelates: a review of recent progress, focusing on thin films

The discovery of superconductivity with Tc ∼ 80 K in the nickelate Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer La3Ni2O7 at high pressure has opened a new platform for unconventional superconductivity, followed by the subsequent observation of superconductivity in trilayer La4Ni3O10, also at high pressure. Remarkably, ambient-pressure superconductivity was also observed recently in La3Ni2O7 ultra-thin films when grown on substrates that provide compressive strain. This discovery significantly extends the type of experimental techniques that can be used in nickelates, previously limited due to the high-pressure constraint. Discussing the similarities and differences among these nickel oxides will provide new insights into understanding the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in correlated electron systems. In this paper, we review the experimental and theoretical progress on Ruddlesden–Popper nickelates, with emphasis on thin films, and discuss future perspectives and research directions.

Connectivity, Pathology, and ApoE4 Interactions Predict Longitudinal Tau Spatial Progression and Memory

ABSTRACT Tau pathology spread into neocortex indicates a transition from healthy aging to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Connectivity between tau epicenters and later accumulating regions of cortex has been proposed as a mechanism of tau spread, but how this relationship changes with greater AD pathology burden or genotype is not understood. We investigated tau accumulation in two key regions, precuneus and inferior temporal cortex, using resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) and longitudinal PET imaging from a multicohort sample of cognitively unimpaired older adults. We examined how baseline tau PET, Aβ PET, and ApoE4 genotype status interact with rsFC between hippocampus and these downstream regions to predict rate of tau accumulation in neocortex. We found that the 3‐way interaction between connectivity, baseline tau, and baseline Aβ or ApoE4 status was associated with neocortical tau accumulation in precuneus and inferior temporal cortex. In addition, baseline tau, Aβ, and ApoE4 status also moderated the association between connectivity and rate of memory decline. Together, these results suggest that the extent and distribution of future tau accumulation may be predicted by the interaction of baseline connectivity, AD pathology, and genetic risk.

Progress and Perspectives: Zirconium Electrodeposition from Different Electrolytes

Zirconium (Zr) possesses outstanding properties, including exceptional chemical resistance and a high melting point, and is therefore desirable for use in a wide variety of challenging environments, such as in nuclear reactors and the chemical processing industry. To minimize the amount of Zr required for any given application, developing methods for generating metallic Zr coatings is highly advantageous. Owing to Zr’s highly negative reduction potential, electrodeposition in traditional solvents at near ambient temperatures remains challenging and thus not well understood. Due to the extreme conditions required to deposit this metal, extensive work has been conducted in molten salt electrolytes, however the broad applicability of this methodology is limited due to its corrosivity. The primary focus of this article is to present an overview of Zr’s electrochemical behavior and to consolidate the efforts of researchers in exploring electrodeposition techniques for Zr involving aqueous, organic, ionic liquid, deep eutectic, and molten salt solvents. With this information, we highlight trends across solvent systems and opportunities for future research.

Cold Spray Cobalt Magnetostrictive Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers for High Temperature Structure Monitoring

The Department of Energy’s Advanced Sensors and Instrumentation program seeks to develop and qualify advanced sensors for the nuclear industry. Reliable high temperature and high radiation sensors for detection and characterization of structural flaws in pipes, vessels, and structurally critical components is a weakness for both conventional light water reactors with coolant T-hot approaching 350oC, and for advanced reactors with T-hot temperatures in excess of 500 to 800oC. Magnetostrictive Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers using a cold spray cobalt coating have been proposed as a sensor design that can withstand these kinds of temperatures and radiation levels to serve as online sensors to detect flaws before cracks, pits, or erosion/corrosion flaws progress to through-wall failures. This report tests cold spray cobalt as part of a magnetostrictive EMAT for high temperature service. Cobalt is known to have strong magnetostrictive properties however the effect of cold spray application is not well studied. This program was surprised to discover that cold sprayed cobalt exhibited little or no magnetostrictive behavior until it was thermally annealed. Following annealing to 650oC however, cold spray cobalt did exhibit a magnetostrictive response. Work to date prior to this milestone report publication showed that magnetostrictive EMAT was successfully tested to 400oC with an alnico permanent magnet. The program plans to extend testing with an electromagnet to higher temperatures. This follow-on work will be reported under subsequent publications or as a revision to this report.
