Pivotable support structure for cross canal solar array

A cross canal support structure for photovoltaic cells is disclosed. The structure includes a major frame having disconnectable and hinged connections to anchors at its corners, on either side of the canal. The major frame carries a plurality of minor frames, which are inclinable at an angle with respect to the major frame with the use of fixed or adjustable mounting plates. The combination of the major frame's tilt and the minor frame tilt enables fabrication of support structures that hold panels at latitude inclination for various portions of a canal.

System and method for micromechanical logical and gate

The present disclosure relates to a mechanical AND-gate logic system that may make use of a first and second lever arms, a first pivot linkage coupling the lever arms, an output member, and a second pivot linkage coupling the second lever arm to the output member. The first lever arm has first and second spaced apart ends for independently receiving separate logic level 1 or logic level 0 input signals thereon, and an output end spaced apart from the first and second input ends. The output end is disposed generally equidistant from the first and second spaced apart ends. The second lever arm has an input end and an output end and can move in both pivoting and translating movements. The first pivot linkage couples the output end of the first lever arm to the input end of the second lever arm such that both the input end and the output end of the second lever arm are able to either pivot and or to translate. The second lever arm is only able to translate and apply a logic 1 level input signal to the output member, to thus generate a logic 1 level output signal, when a logic level 1 input signal is applied simultaneously to both of the first and second input ends of the first lever arm.

Randomized Projection for Rank-Revealing Matrix Factorizations and Low-Rank Approximations

Rank-revealing matrix decompositions provide an essential tool in spectral analysis of matrices, including the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and related low-rank approximation techniques. QR with Column Pivoting (QRCP) is usually suitable for these purposes, but it can be much slower than the unpivoted QR algorithm. For large matrices, the difference in performance is due to increased communication between the processor and slow memory, which QRCP needs in order to choose pivots during decomposition. Our main algorithm, Randomized QR with Column Pivoting (RQRCP), uses randomized projection to make pivot decisions from a much smaller sample matrix, which we can construct to reside in a faster level of memory than the original matrix. This technique may be understood as trading vastly reduced communication for a controlled increase in uncertainty during the decision process. Furthermore, for rank-revealing purposes, the selection mechanism in RQRCP produces results that are the same quality as the standard algorithm, but with performance near that of unpivoted QR (often an order of magnitude faster for large matrices). Additionally, we also propose two formulas that facilitate further performance improvements. The first efficiently updates sample matrices to avoid computing new randomized projections. The second avoids large trailing updates during the decomposition in truncated low-rank approximations. Our truncated version of RQRCP also provides a key initial step in our truncated SVD approximation, TUXV. These advances open up a new performance domain for large matrix factorizations that will support efficient problem-solving techniques for challenging applications in science, engineering, and data analysis.

Development of Training Materials for Pathologists to Provide Machine Learning Validation Data of Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes in Breast Cancer

The High Throughput Truthing project aims to develop a dataset for validating artificial intelligence and machine learning models (AI/ML) fit for regulatory purposes. The context of this AI/ML validation dataset is the reporting of stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs) density evaluations in hematoxylin and eosin-stained invasive breast cancer biopsy specimens. After completing the pilot study, we found notable variability in the sTILs estimates as well as inconsistencies and gaps in the provided training to pathologists. Using the pilot study data and an expert panel, we created custom training materials to improve pathologist annotation quality for the pivotal study. We categorized regions of interest (ROIs) based on their mean sTILs density and selected ROIs with the highest and lowest sTILs variability. In a series of eight one-hour sessions, the expert panel reviewed each ROI and provided verbal density estimates and comments on features that confounded the sTILs evaluation. We aggregated and shaped the comments to identify pitfalls and instructions to improve our training materials. From these selected ROIs, we created a training set and proficiency test set to improve pathologist training with the goal to improve data collection for the pivotal study. We are not exploring AI/ML performance in this paper. Instead, we are creating materials that will train crowd-sourced pathologists to be the reference standard in a pivotal study to create an AI/ML model validation dataset. The issues discussed here are also important for clinicians to understand about the evaluation of sTILs in clinical practice and can provide insight to developers of AI/ML models.

Graphitic Aza-Fused π-Conjugated Networks: Construction, Engineering, and Task-Specific Applications

2D π-conjugated networks linked by aza-fused units represent a pivotal category of graphitic materials with stacked nanosheet architectures. Extensive efforts have been directed at their fabrication and application since the discovery of covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs). Besides the triazine cores, tricycloquinazoline and hexaazatriphenylene linkages are further introduced to tailor the structures and properties. Diverse related materials have been developed rapidly, and a thorough outlook is necessitated to unveil the structure–property–application relationships across multiple subcategories, which is pivotal to guide the design and fabrication toward enhanced task-specific performance. Herein, the structure types and development of related materials including CTFs, covalent quinazoline networks, and hexaazatriphenylene networks, are introduced. Advanced synthetic strategies coupled with characterization techniques provide powerful tools to engineer the properties and tune the associated behaviors in corresponding applications. Case studies in the areas of gas adsorption, membrane-based separation, thermo-/electro-/photocatalysis, and energy storage are then addressed, focusing on the correlation between structure/property engineering and optimization of the corresponding performance, particularly the preferred features and strategies in each specific field. In the last section, the underlying challenges and opportunities in construction and application of this emerging and promising material category are discussed.

Development of Tailored Hydrocarbon-Based Pentablock Copolymer Membranes for Sodium-Polysulfide Flow Batteries

Long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies are pivotal for the adoption of renewables like wind and solar. Non-aqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs) with a sodium-polysulfide hybrid system feature high energy density independent of power density, yet face challenges with polysulfide shuttling. This study investigates a hydrocarbon-based penta-block copolymer membrane, Nexar, to mitigate crossover effects by balancing TFSI conversion and their crosslink density. The membranes are annealed to induce crosslinking for reducing electrolyte uptake and enhancing mechanical stability while demonstrating excellent ionic conductivity. The hydrocarbon-based membranes address environmental concerns associated with perfluoroalkyl substances and improve the performance and durability of NARFBs. In conclusion, our findings suggest that annealed Nexar membranes with tailored TFSI functionality offer a scalable, cost-effective solution for enhancing the efficiency of high-capacity energy storage systems, pivotal for grid integration of renewable sources.

Computing rank‐revealing factorizations of matrices stored out‐of‐core

This paper describes efficient algorithms for computing rank-revealing factorizations of matrices that are too large to fit in main memory (RAM), and must instead be stored on slow external memory devices such as disks (out-of-core or out-of-memory). Traditional algorithms for computing rank-revealing factorizations (such as the column pivoted QR factorization and the singular value decomposition) are very communication intensive as they require many vector-vector and matrix-vector operations, which become prohibitively expensive when data is not in RAM. Randomization allows to reformulate new methods so that large contiguous blocks of the matrix are processed in bulk. The paper describes two distinct methods. The first is a blocked version of column pivoted Householder QR, organized as a “left-looking” method to minimize the number of the expensive write operations. The second method results employs a UTV factorization. It is organized as an algorithm-by-blocks to overlap computations and I/O operations. As it incorporates power iterations, it is much better at revealing the numerical rank. Numerical experiments on several computers demonstrate that the new algorithms are almost as fast when processing data stored on slow memory devices as traditional algorithms are for data stored in RAM.

Fibonacci fast convergence for neutrino oscillations in matter

Understanding neutrino oscillations in matter requires a non-trivial diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. As the exact solution is very complicated, many approximation schemes have been pursued. Here we show that one scheme, systematically applying rotations to change to a better basis, converges exponentially fast wherein the rate of convergence follows the Fibonacci sequence. We find that the convergence rate of this procedure depends very sensitively on the initial choices of the rotations as well as the mechanism of selecting the pivots. We then apply this scheme for neutrino oscillations in matter and discover that the optimal convergence rate is found using the following simple strategy: first apply the vacuum (2-3) rotation and then use the largest off-diagonal element as the pivot for each of the following rotations. The Fibonacci convergence rate presented here may be extendable to systems beyond neutrino oscillations.

Revealing functional insights into ER proteostasis through proteomics and interactomics

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER), responsible for processing approximately one-third of the human proteome including most secreted and membrane proteins, plays a pivotal role in protein homeostasis (proteostasis). Dysregulation of ER proteostasis has been implicated in a number of disease states. As such, continued efforts are directed at elucidating mechanisms of ER protein quality control which are mediated by transient and dynamic protein-protein interactions with molecular chaperones, co-chaperones, protein folding and trafficking factors that take place in and around the ER. Technological advances in mass spectrometry have played a pivotal role in characterizing and understanding these protein-protein interactions that dictate protein quality control mechanisms. Here, we highlight the recent progress from mass spectrometry-based investigation of ER protein quality control in revealing the topological arrangement of the proteostasis network, stress response mechanisms that adjust the ER proteostasis capacity, and disease specific changes in proteostasis network engagement. We close by providing a brief outlook on underexplored areas of ER proteostasis where mass spectrometry is a tool uniquely primed to further expand our understanding of the regulation and coordination of protein quality control processes in diverse diseases.

The impact of surface composition on the interfacial energetics and photoelectrochemical properties of BiVO{sub 4}.

The ability to engineer a photoelectrode surface is pivotal for optimizing the properties of any photoelectrode used for solar fuel production. Altering crystal facets exposed on the surface of photoelectrodes has been a major strategy to modify their surface structure. However, there exist numerous ways to terminate the surface even for the same facet, which can considerably alter the photoelectrode properties. Here we report tightly integrated experimental and computational investigations of epitaxial BiVO4 photoelectrodes with vanadium- and bismuth-rich (010) facets. Our study demonstrates that even for the same facet the surface Bi:V ratio has a remarkable impact on the interfacial energetics and photoelectrochemical properties. We also elucidate the microscopic origins of how the surface composition can affect the photoelectrochemical properties. This study opens an unexplored path for understanding and engineering surface energetics via tuning the surface termination/composition of multinary oxide photoelectrodes.
