Combination of Searches for Higgs Boson Pair Production in pp Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents results from a combination of searches for Higgs boson pair production using 126–140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at √𝑠 =13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. At 95% confidence level (CL), the upper limit on the production rate is 2.9 times the standard model (SM) prediction, with an expected limit of 2.4 assuming no Higgs boson pair production. Constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier 𝜅 𝜆 = 𝜆 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻 /𝜆$^{SM}_{𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝐻}$, and the quartic 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝑉⁢𝑉 coupling modifier 𝜅 2⁢𝑉 = 𝑔 𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝑉⁢𝑉⁡ /𝑔$^{SM}_{𝐻⁡𝐻⁡𝑉⁢𝑉}$, are derived individually, fixing the other parameter to its SM value. The observed 95% CL intervals are −1.2<𝜅 𝜆 < 7.2 and 0.6<𝜅 2⁢𝑉 < 1.5, respectively, while the expected intervals are −1.6<𝜅 𝜆 < 7.2 and 0.4<𝜅 2⁢𝑉 < 1.6 in the SM case. Constraints obtained for several interaction parameters within Higgs effective field theory are the strongest to date, offering insights into potential deviations from SM predictions.

Born-approximation and radiative corrections to pair production in photon-photon collisions

Aspects of pair production in photon-photon collisions, which can be of great importance in a variety of astrophysical settings, are examined. In particular, the correction associated with the use of Coulomb rather than plane-wave functions to describe the outgoing e(+) e(-) is evaluated. This is important only in the energy domain near threshold where e(+) e(-) are nonrelativistic, and the effect is evaluated. Because of the extreme simplicity of the nonrelativistic Born limit, the corresponding derivation is briefly outlined using noncovariant perturbation theory. The relative magnitude of the Born correction is comparable to radiative-correction effects. These effects can be evaluated easily in the nonrelativistic limit, and an approximate calculation is outlined.

Search for pair production of heavy particles decaying to a top quark and a gluon in the lepton+jets final state in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$

A search is presented for the pair production of new heavy resonances, each decaying into a top quark (t) or antiquark and a gluon (g). The analysis uses data recorded with the CMS detector from proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . Events with one muon or electron, multiple jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. After using a deep neural network to enrich the data sample with signal-like events, distributions in the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all reconstructed objects are analyzed in the search for a signal. No significant deviations from the standard model prediction are found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction squared for the pair production of excited top quarks in the t* → tg decay channel. The upper limits range from 120 to 0.8 fb for a t* with spin-1/2 and from 15 to 1.0 fb for a t* with spin-3/2. These correspond to mass exclusion limits up to 1050 and 1700 GeV for spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 t* particles, respectively. These are the most stringent limits to date on the existence of t* → tg resonances.

Search for Higgs boson pair production in the $\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{WW}$ decay channel with two leptons in the final state using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV

A search for Higgs boson pair production is presented, targeting final states where one Higgs boson decays to a bottom quark-antiquark pair and the other Higgs boson decays to two W bosons, both of which decay leptonically, to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. For the first time, the search is conducted with proton-proton collision data from the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV, recorded with the CMS detector in 2022 and 2023 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62 fb −1 . The results are consistent with the standard model predictions. An upper limit of 12.0 times the standard model prediction at 95% confidence level is set on the Higgs boson pair production cross section, with an expected limit of 18.5. The results are also used to constrain the strength of the trilinear self-coupling of the Higgs boson, as well as of the quartic coupling between two Higgs bosons and two vector bosons.

Hadron-Hadron Scattering

Study of Higgs boson pair production in the HH → b $\overline{b}$ γγ final state with 308 fb −1 of data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and 13.6 TeV by the ATLAS experiment

A search for Higgs boson pair production in the b $\overline{b}$ γγ −1, consisting of two samples, 140 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV and 168 fb −1 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV , recorded between 2015 and 2024 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In addition to a larger dataset, this analysis improves upon the previous search in the same final state through several methodological and technical developments. The Higgs boson pair production cross section divided by the Standard Model prediction is found to be μ HH = 0.9$^{+1.4}_{−1.1}$ (μ HH = 1$^{+1.3}_{−1.0}$ expected), which translates into a 95% confidence-level upper limit of μ HH < 3.7. At the same confidence level the Higgs self-coupling modifier is constrained to be in the range −1.6 < κ λ < 6.6 (−1.8 < κ λ < 6.9 expected).

ATLAS

Search for pair production of boosted Higgs bosons via vector-boson fusion in the $b$$\overline{b}$$b$$\overline{b}$ final state using $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion is performed in the Lorentz-boosted regime, where a Higgs boson candidate is reconstructed as a single large-radius jet, using 140 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Only Higgs boson decays into bottom quark pairs are considered. The search is particularly sensitive to the quartic coupling between two vector bosons and two Higgs bosons relative to its Standard Model prediction, K 2V . This study constrains K 2V to 0.55 < K 2V < 1.49 at the 95% confidence level. The value K 2V = 0 is excluded with a significance of 3.8 standard deviations with other Higgs boson couplings fixed to their Standard Model values. A search for new heavy spin-0 resonances that would mediate Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion is carried out in the mass range of 1–5 TeV for the first time under several model and decay-width assumptions. No significant deviation from the Standard Model hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived.

Time-dependent behavior of active galactic nuclei with pair production

We study the properties of coupled partial differential equations describing the time-dependent behavior of the photon and electron occupation numbers for conditions likely to be found near active galactic nuclei (AGN). The processes governing electron acceleration are modeled by a stochastic accelerator, and we include acceleration by Alfvenic and whistler turbulence. The acceleration of electrons is limited by Compton and synchrotron losses, and the number density of electrons depends on pair production and annihilation processes. We also treat particle escape from the system. We examine the steady, (possibly) oscillatory, and unstable solutions that arise for various choices of parameters. We examine instabilities related to pair production and trapping and consider the formation of pair jets.

Search for bottom-type vectorlike quark pair production in dileptonic and fully hadronic final states in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search is described for the production of a pair of bottom-type vectorlike quarks ( B VLQs) with mass greater than 1000 GeV. Each B VLQ decays into a b quark and a Higgs boson, a b quark and a Z boson, or a t quark and a W boson. This analysis considers both fully hadronic final states and those containing a charged lepton pair from a Z boson decay. The products of the H → b b boson decay and of the hadronic Z or W boson decays can be resolved as two distinct jets or merged into a single jet, so the final states are classified by the number of reconstructed jets. The analysis uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 collected in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018. No excess over the expected background is observed. Lower limits are set on the B VLQ mass at the 95% confidence level. These depend on the B VLQ branching fractions and are 1570 and 1540 GeV for 100% B → b H and 100% B → b Z , respectively. In most cases, the mass limits obtained exceed previous limits by at least 100 GeV.

Electron-positron pair production in hot unsaturated Compton accretion models around black holes

Electron-positron pairs photoproduced in conventional unsaturated Compton disk and spherical accretion models with electron temperature greater than 10 to the 9 K are found to dominate over the background electrons. This results in an equilibrium temperature lower than previously found and severely constrains the model parameters in some cases. Electron-positron pair production does not alleviate the thermal instability of the optically thin two-temperature disk model.

X-ray flares from runaway pair production in active galactic nuclei

The hard X-ray spectrum of AGNs is nonthermal, probably arising from an electron-positron pair cascade, with some emission reflected off relatively cold matter. There has been interest in models on which protons are accelerated and create relativistic electrons on interaction with a local radiation field. It is shown here that a sufficient column density of protons can lead to runaway pair production: photons generated by the relativistic pairs are the targets for the protons to produce more pairs. This can produce X-ray fluxes with the characteristics observed in AGN. The model predicts the maximum ratio of luminosity to source size as well as their spectrum in the early phases. The same mechanism may also be able to create the knots of synchrotron-radiating pair plasma seen in sources such as 3C273.

Measurement of the dineutrino system kinematic variables in dileptonic top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Differential top quark pair production cross sections are measured in the dilepton final states e + e − , μ + μ − , and e ± μ ∓ , as a function of kinematic variables of the two-neutrino system: the transverse momentum $p^{vv}_{\textrm{T}}$ of the dineutrino system, the minimum distance in azimuthal angle between $\vec{p}^{vv}_{\textrm{T}}$ and leptons, and in two dimensions in bins of both observables. The measurements are performed using CERN LHC proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, recorded by the CMS detector between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The measured cross sections are unfolded to the particle level using an unregularized least squares method. Results are compared with predictions by the standard model of particle physics, and found to be in agreement with theoretical calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations.

Pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos in supernovae

The emissivity was calculated for the pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos, in a way that can be used in supernova calculations. Also presented are simple estimates which show that such process can act as an efficient energy-loss mechanism in the shocked supernova core, and this fact is used to extract neutrino mass limits from SN 1987A neutrino observations.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the $\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}$ final state using large-area jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the resonant production of a pair of standard model-like Higgs bosons using data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The final state consists of two b quark-antiquark pairs. The search is conducted in the region of phase space where at least one of the pairs is highly Lorentz-boosted and is reconstructed as a single large-area jet. The other pair may be either similarly merged or resolved, the latter reconstructed using two b-tagged jets. The data are found to be consistent with standard model processes and are interpreted as 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the cross sections and the branching fractions of the spin-0 radion and the spin-2 bulk graviton that arise in warped extradimensional models. The limits set are in the range 9.74–0.29 fb and 4.94–0.19 fb for a narrow radion and a graviton, respectively, with masses between 1 and 3 TeV. For a radion and for a bulk graviton with widths 10% of their masses, the limits are in the range 12.5–0.35 fb and 8.23–0.23 fb, respectively, for the same masses. These limits result in the exclusion of a narrow-width graviton with a mass below 1.2 TeV, and of narrow and 10%-width radions with masses below 2.6, and 2.9 TeV, respectively.

Thermal and dynamical effects of pair production on two-temperature accretion flows

The two-temperature criterion for quasi-spherical (ion-pressure supported) accretion onto a black hole, including the effects of electron-positron pair production is studied. For an interesting range of accretion rates, Coulomb interactions between protons and pairs can cool the innermost regions of the accretion flow. The cooled plasma, assumed to possess some angular momentum, will collapse onto the equatorial plane, forming an optically thick annulus. Hysteresis effects involved in the cooling criterion are expected to lead to bistability or time dependence, which may be associated with variability in certain classes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Radiation from the annulus may be responsible for the EUV/soft X-ray excess observed in some AGNs.
