Measurements of 15.11-MeV gamma-ray flux produced in the reactions C-12(p, p')-C-12*(15.11 MeV) and O-16(p, p' alpha)-C-12*(15.11 MeV)

The flux of 15.11 MeV gamma rays relative to the flux of 4.44 MeV gamma rays which are emitted from the corresponding states of C-12 are a sensitive measure of the spectrum of exciting particles in solar flares and other cosmic sources. Emission of 15.11 MeV gamma rays may result not only from the direct excitation of C-12 but also from the interaction O-16 (p,p' alpha) C-12* sup 15.11 MeV. Although the cross sections for the direct reaction was studied extensively, the cross section for the spallation interaction with O-16 is not reported in the literature. Preliminary measurements demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the production of 15.11 MeV gamma rays by proton interactions with O-16 using the University of Maryland cyclotron facility. For both carbon and oxygen targets the flux of 15.11 MeV gamma rays is being measured relative to the flux of 4.44 MeV gamma rays. The gamma ray emission from de-excitation of the giant dipole resonances is being measured.

Measurements of second-harmonic Fourier coefficients from azimuthal anisotropies in p + p , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second- and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients v 2 and v 3 for midrapidity (|η|< 0.35 ) charged hadrons in 0%–5% central p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 200 GeV, utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Acharya et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, 024901 (2022)]. Here, this paper extends these measurements of v 2 to all centralities in p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions, as well as p+p collisions, as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of v 2 is quantified as the ratio R of v 2 between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for 0.5 < p T <1 and 2 T < 2.5 GeV/c. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed v 2 in most-central to midcentral d Au and 3 He+Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in p+p, p+Au, and peripheral d+Au and 3 He+Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in the AMPT model than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed R for 0.5 < p T < 1 GeV/c , but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for 2 < p T < 2.5 GeV/c.

Investigating the p--π ± and p--p--π ± dynamics with femtoscopy in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The interaction between pions and nucleons plays a crucial role in hadron physics. It represents a fundamental building block of the low-energy QCD dynamics and is subject to several resonance excitations. This work studies the p--π ± dynamics using femtoscopic correlations in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV measured by ALICE at the LHC. As the final-state interaction between protons and pions is well constrained by scattering experiments and the study of pionic hydrogen, the results give access to information on the particle-emitting source in pp collisions using the femtoscopy methods. The scaling of the source size of primordial protons and pions against their pair transverse mass is extracted. The results are compared with the source sizes studied with p–p, p--K + , and π ± –π ± pairs by ALICE in the same collision system and are found to be in agreement for the different particle pairs. This reinforces recent findings by ALICE of a common emission source for all hadron-pairs in pp collisions at LHC energies. Furthermore, the p--p--π ± systems are studied using three-particle femtoscopy in pp collisions at TeV. The presence of three-body effects is analyzed utilizing the cumulant expansion method. In this formalism, the known two-body interactions are subtracted in order to isolate the three-body effects. For both, p--p--π + and p--p--π – , a non-zero cumulant is found, indicating effects beyond pairwise interactions. These results give information on the coupling of the pion to multiple nucleons.

Inclusive dielectron cross sections in p + p and p + d interactions at beam energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV

Measurements of dielectron production in p + p and p + d collisions with beamkinetic energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV are presented. The differential cross section is presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the mass spectra and their evolution with beam energy provide information about the relative importance of the various dielectron production mechanisms in this energy regime. The p + d to p + p ratio of the dielectron yield is also presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra from the p + d and p + p systems are found to be similar to one another for each of the beam energies studied. The beam energy dependence of the integrated cross sections is also presented.

Checking nonflow assumptions and results via PHENIX published correlations in p+p, p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au at √ s NN=200 GeV

Recently the PHENIX Collaboration has made available two-particle correlation Fourier coefficients for multiple detector combinations in minimum bias p+p and 0–5% central p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV [Phys. Rev. C 105, 024901 (2022)]. Using these coefficients for three sets of two-particle correlations, azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v 2 and v 3 are extracted for midrapidity charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum. In this paper, we use the available coefficients to explore various nonflow hypotheses as well as to compare the results with theoretical model calculations. The nonflow methods fail basic closure tests with ampt and pythia/angantyr, particularly when including correlations with particles in the low multiplicity light-projectile going direction. In data, the nonflow adjusted v 2 results are modestly lower in p+Au and the adjusted v 3 results are more significantly higher in p+Au and d+Au. However, the resulting higher values for the ratio v 3 /v 2 in p+Au at RHIC compared to p+Pb at the LHC is additional evidence for a significant overcorrection. Incorporating these additional checks, the conclusion that these flow coefficients are dominated by initial geometry coupled with final-state interactions (e.g., hydrodynamic expansion of quark-gluon plasma) remains true, and explanations based solely on initial-state glasma are ruled out. The detailed balance between intrinsic and fluctuation-driven geometry and the exact role of weakly versus strongly coupled prehydrodynamic evolution remains an open question for triangular flow, requiring further theoretical and experimental investigation.

T -odd parton distribution functions and azimuthal anisotropy at high transverse momentum in p − p and p − A collisions

Various azimuthal anisotropies ( v 1 , v 2 , v 3 , v 4 ), at high transverse momentum (high p T ), are shown to arise from the asymmetric scattering of transverse polarized quarks and gluons, arising from unpolarized nucleons (the Boer-Mulders effect) and resulting in unpolarized hadrons (the Collins effect). Combined with the asymmetric scattering of partons from polarization independent but transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions, we obtain a possible mechanism to understand the azimuthal anisotropy of hadrons at large transverse momentum observed in p − p collisions. Constraining the ratio of polarization dependent TMD distributions to polarization independent distributions by comparing with the data from p − p collisions, we find that scaling the acquired transverse momentum of the initial state partons from the proton, due to prescattering before the hard interaction, with the length of the nucleus ( k ⊥ 2 ∝ A 1 / 3 ), straightforwardly yields the azimuthal anisotropy at high p T in p − A collisions. First Measurement Using Elliptically Polarized Photons of the Double-Polarization Observable E for γ p → p π 0 and γ p → n π +

We report the measurement of the helicity asymmetry E for the p π 0 and n π + final states using, for the first time, an elliptically polarized photon beam in combination with a longitudinally polarized target at the Crystal Ball experiment at MAMI. The results agree very well with data that were taken with a circularly polarized photon beam, showing that it is possible to simultaneously measure polarization observables that require linearly (e.g., G ) and circularly polarized photons (e.g., E ) and a longitudinally polarized target. The new data cover a photon energy range 270–1400 MeV for the p π 0 final state (230–842 MeV for the n π + final state) and the full range of pion polar angles, θ , providing the most precise measurement of the observable E . A moment analysis gives a clear observation of the p η cusp in the p π 0 final state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurements of Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Dimuons in $p+p$ and $p+d$ Interactions at 120 GeV/$c$

We present experimental results on the angular distributions of Drell-Yan muons produced by a 120 GeV/$c$ proton beam interacting with liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. The dimuon angular distributions in both polar ($θ$) and azimuthal ($ϕ$) angles in the Collins-Soper frame are measured within the kinematic range of $4.5 < m_{μμ} < 10\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$, $0.19 < p_T < 2.24\ \mathrm{GeV}/c$, and $0 < x_F < 0.95$. Unlike the results of a previous proton-induced Drell-Yan experiment at a higher energy, the data reveal a pronounced $\cos 2ϕ$ modulation in the angular distributions. Comparison with perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions shows statistically significant deviations, with p-values of 3.5% for the $p+p$ and 1.5% for the $p+d$ Drell-Yan processes. These results suggest the presence of nonperturbative QCD contributions.

Evidence of h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η Decay and Search for h b ( 1 P , 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 with the Belle Detector

We report the first evidence for the h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η transition with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be B [ h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η ] = ( 7.1 − 3.2 + 3.7 ± 0.8 ) × 10 − 3 , which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on π 0 transitions of B [ h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 − 3 , and B [ h b ( 1 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 − 3 , at the 90% confidence level. These results are obtained with a 131.4 fb − 1 data sample collected near the ϒ ( 5 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Recent Measurements of Heavy Quarkonium Production in Au+Au, p+Au and p+p Collisions at STAR

Heavy quarkonia are useful probes of the quark-gluon plasma, where quarkonium dissociation is expected at high enough temperature. Indeed, such a suppression is clearly present in the latest STAR measurements of J/ψ production in Au+Au collisions. The suppression is observed to have little dependence on p T , although cold-nuclear matter (CNM) effects, such as shadowing, anti-shadowing and nuclear absorption can play a significant role at low p T . Measurements of the J/ψ production in p+A collisions can help us to disentangle the CNM effects from the hot medium effects in A+A collisions. In these proceedings, we will present the measurement of J/ψ production in p+Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. In addition, we will present recent STAR measurements of J/ψ and Υ production in p+p collisions including their dependence on the charged-particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity. Furthermore, these measurements are important for understanding the mechanism of the heavy quarkonium production in elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions and the interplay of soft and hard processes.

A series of Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) rare earth thiophosphates with two distinct thiophosphate units [P V S 4 ] 3- and [P IV 2 S 6 ] 4-

A series of rubidium rare earth thiophosphates with the formula Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd) were synthesized using the high temperature molten flux crystal growth method utilizing a RbBr flux. Single crystals of all title compounds, as well as phase pure powders of the La-, Ce-, and Sm-containing compositions, were obtained. Single crystals of the title compounds were characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction for structure and phase identification. Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system adopting the P2 1 /n space group for the large rare earths (Ln = La, Ce, Pr) and the C2/c space group for the smaller rare earths (Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd). This Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 series is a rare example of thiophosphates containing both tetrahedral [P V S 4 ] 3– and dimeric [P IV 2 S 6 ] 4– thiophosphate units that, in this structural family, link corrugated rare earth sulfide chains into sheets. Here, the band gaps of the materials were determined from UV–Vis data and the fluorescence spectrum of Rb 4 Ce 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 was collected. Optical band gaps were estimated to be 2.9 and 2.4 for the Nd and Sm analogues, respectively.

Cs X Si 15 P 21 ( X = Sn or Pb): Polar Noncentrosymmetric Si–P Frameworks Stabilized by Covalent X –P Bonding

Metal silicon phosphides composed of earth-abundant Si and P tend to exhibit semiconducting properties and adopt diverse crystal structures with relatively small additions of structure-directing elements. The potential of silicon phosphide materials in nonlinear optical applications has been hindered by the inability to systematically produce noncentrosymmetric structures with such a flexible framework. Here, in this work, two isostructural compounds with a novel noncentrosymmetric structure were made possible by the inclusion of elements with stereochemically active lone pairs (Sn 2+ and Pb 2+ ). The structures were determined through single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Analysis of chemical bonding in real space through the electron localization function revealed stereochemically active Pb 2+ and Sn 2+ species in a trigonal pyramidal coordination with {Pb/Sn}–P bonds. Such covalent bonding between Pb and P is quite uncommon in extended solids and has been reported in a few rare instances. Band structure calculations and linear optical measurements confirm the semiconducting nature of Cs X Si 15 P 21 ( X = Sn or Pb). The synthesis was optimized to yield high-purity polycrystalline samples. The nonlinear optical properties show promising second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients from the Kurtz–Perry method. First-principles calculations of the nonlinear optical properties support the experimentally determined SHG values and provide moderate values of birefringence, suggesting Cs X Si 15 P 21 could be phase-matchable and practical nonlinear optical materials in the mid-IR region.

Signal Extraction and Simulations for n -> p^0 y y and n -> p+p-e+e- Decays at the Jefferson Lab Eta Factory

The Jefferson Lab eta Factory (JEF) began acquiring data in early 2025. The experiment aims to give insight into the connection between Dark Matter physics models and the Standard Model by investigating rare decay processes of n and n' mesons. Several other physics motivations are also a key factor in the experiment, such as probing C and/or P violation and aspects of chiral perturbation theory. For these purposes, the forward calorimeter of the GlueX experiment in Jefferson Lab was upgraded so that it provides greater positional and energy resolution. Understanding physics-motivated cuts and background removal methods is of great importance to achieving JEF goals. Several methods have been implemented to obtain invariant mass plots for the “golden” channel of interest ¿ ¿ p0¿¿, while channels such as ¿ ¿ p+p-e+e- open a promising window into CP-violating physics. This thesis work shows a sig nificant background reduction in rare decay channels of interest, asymmetry factors comparable to recent experimental measurements, an evaluation on which analysis cuts to use after data acquisition and the likelihood of probing specific rare ¿ decays. Despite background rejection from obstructing decay channels, much remains to do to extract the p0¿¿ final-state. The asymmetry between the pion and lepton planes looks promising for p+p-e+e-; simulations show that the asymmetry is consistent with zero (no instrumental asymmetry), and the next step should include generators that model the physics of the asymmetry. This thesis work may help in the effort of probing CP-violating physics or solving the mysteries between “beyond-Standard Model” and our current understanding of physics.
