Synchronous and asynchronous optimized Schwarz methods for one-way subdivision of bounded domains

Convergence of both synchronous and asynchronous optimized Schwarz algorithms for the shifted Laplacian operator on a bounded rectangular domain, in a one-way subdivision of the computational domain, with overlap, is shown. Convergence results are obtained under very mild conditions on the size of the subdomains and on the amount of overlap. A couple of results are also given, relating the convergence rate of the asynchronous method to changes in the size of the domain. Numerical experiments illustrate the theoretical results.

Accelerating Multivariate Functional Approximation Computation with Domain Decomposition Techniques⋆

Modeling large datasets through Multivariate Functional Approximations (MFA) provide an elegant way to handle many visualization and scientific analysis workflows. The process necessitates scalable data partitioning methods to compute MFA representations efficiently without compromising the accuracy or continuity of the reconstructed solution. We propose a domain -decomposed method for computing the MFA with B -spline bases, which reduces the total work per task and uses a restricted Additive Schwarz (RAS) method to converge the control point data degrees -of -freedom along subdomain boundaries. We provide an in-depth analysis of the parallel approach with domain decomposition solvers, aiming to minimize local subdomain error residuals and recover high -order continuity at subdomain interfaces with appropriate choices of knot overlaps. The communication cost, determined by the overlap regions in the RAS implementation, is optimized to recover the numerical error profile of the single subdomain case. Our proposed method stands in contrast to previous methods, which typically only recover either C 0 or at best C 1 continuity for arbitrary B -spline degree expansions, or those that require post -processing to blend discontinuities in the reconstructed data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using analytical and real -world datasets in 1D, 2D, and 3D through both strong and weak scaling studies. The performance results indicate that the overall cost of computing the approximation is directly proportional to the underlying nearest -neighbor communication implementation, and is only weakly dependent on the overlap region size that determines the size of the messages. This finding underscores the efficiency and scalability of our proposed method, making it a promising solution for handling large datasets in scientific workflows.

A Fast Temporal Decomposition Procedure for Long-Horizon Nonlinear Dynamic Programming

We propose a fast temporal decomposition procedure for solving long-horizon nonlinear dynamic programs. The core of the procedure is sequential quadratic programming (SQP) that utilizes a differentiable exact augmented Lagrangian as the merit function. Within each SQP iteration, we approximately solve the Newton system using an overlapping temporal decomposition strategy. We show that the approximate search direction is still a descent direction of the augmented Lagrangian provided the overlap size and penalty parameters are suitably chosen, which allows us to establish the global convergence. Moreover, we show that a unit step size is accepted locally for the approximate search direction and further establish a uniform, local linear convergence over stages. This local convergence rate matches the rate of the recent Schwarz scheme (Na et al. 2022). However, the Schwarz scheme has to solve nonlinear subproblems to optimality in each iteration, whereas we only perform a single Newton step instead. Numerical experiments validate our theories and demonstrate the superiority of our method.

Evaluating asynchronous Schwarz solvers on GPUs

With the commencement of the exascale computing era, we realize that the majority of the leadership supercomputers are heterogeneous and massively parallel. Even a single node can contain multiple co-processors such as GPUs and multiple CPU cores. For example, ORNL’s Summit accumulates six NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs and 42 IBM Power9 cores on each node. Synchronizing across compute resources of multiple nodes can be prohibitively expensive. Hence, it is necessary to develop and study asynchronous algorithms that circumvent this issue of bulk-synchronous computing. In this study, we examine the asynchronous version of the abstract Restricted Additive Schwarz method as a solver. We do not explicitly synchronize, but allow the communication between the sub-domains to be completely asynchronous, thereby removing the bulk synchronous nature of the algorithm. We accomplish this by using the one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) functions of the MPI standard. We study the benefits of using such an asynchronous solver over its synchronous counterpart. We also study the communication patterns governed by the partitioning and the overlap between the sub-domains on the global solver. Finally, we show that this concept can render attractive performance benefits over the synchronous counterparts even for a well-balanced problem.

Measurement of the production cross section of a Higgs boson with large transverse momentum in its decays to a pair of τ leptons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A measurement of the production cross section of a Higgs boson with transverse momentum greater than 250GeV is presented where the Higgs boson decays to a pair of τ leptons. It is based on proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Because of the large transverse momentum of the Higgs boson the τ leptons from its decays are boosted and produced spatially close, with their decay products overlapping. Therefore, a dedicated algorithm was developed to reconstruct and identify them. The observed (expected) significance of the measured signal with respect to the standard model background-only hypothesis is 3.5 (2.2) standard deviations. The product of the production cross section and branching fraction is measured to be 1.64 − 0.54 + 0.68 times the standard model expectation. The fiducial differential production cross section is also measured as functions of the Higgs boson and leading jet transverse momenta. This measurement extends the probed large-transverse-momentum region in the ττ final state beyond 600GeV.

Performance of the local reconstruction algorithms for the CMS hadron calorimeter with Run 2 data

A description is presented of the algorithms used to reconstruct energy deposited in the CMS hadron calorimeter during Run 2 (2015–2018) of the LHC. During Run 2, the characteristic bunch-crossing spacing for proton-proton collisions was 25 ns, which resulted in overlapping signals from adjacent crossings. The energy corresponding to a particular bunch crossing of interest is estimated using the known pulse shapes of energy depositions in the calorimeter, which are measured as functions of both energy and time. A variety of algorithms were developed to mitigate the effects of adjacent bunch crossings on local energy reconstruction in the hadron calorimeter in Run 2, and their performance is compared.

Measurement of the $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry in events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks decaying to a single lepton and jets is presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The selection is optimized for top quarks produced with large Lorentz boosts, resulting in nonisolated leptons and overlapping jets. The top quark charge asymmetry is measured for events with a $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass larger than 750 GeV and corrected for detector and acceptance effects using a binned maximum likelihood fit. The measured top quark charge asymmetry of ($0.42_{-0.69}^{+0.64}$) % is in good agreement with the standard model prediction at next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamic perturbation theory with next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections. The result is also presented for two invariant mass ranges, 750–900 and > 900 GeV .

Characterizing the initial state and dynamical evolution in XeXe and PbPb collisions using multiparticle cumulants

For the first time, correlations among mixed-order moments of two or three flow harmonics —( v n k , v m l ) and ( v n k , v m l , v p q ), with k, l, and q denoting the respective orders—are measured in xenon–xenon (XeXe) collisions and compared with lead–lead (PbPb) results, providing a novel probe of collective behavior in heavy ion collisions. These measurements compare a nearly spherical, doubly-magic 208 Pb nucleus to a triaxially deformed 129 Xe nucleus, emphasizing the sensitivity to initial-state geometry fluctuations arising from nuclear deformation. The dependence of these results (v n , n = 2 , 3 , 4 ) on the shape and size of the nuclear overlap region is studied. Comparisons between v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 demonstrate the importance of v 3 and v 4 in exploring the nonlinear hydrodynamic response of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to the initial spatial anisotropy. The results constrain initial-state model parameters that influence the evolution of the QGP. The CMS detector was used to collect XeXe and PbPb data at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of S N N = 5.44 and 5.36 TeV, respectively. Correlations are extracted using multiparticle mixed-harmonic cumulants (up to eight-particle cumulants) with charged particles in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 2.4 and transverse momentum range 0.5 < p T < 3 GeV/c.
