The mean magnetic field of the sun - Method of observation and relation to the interplanetary magnetic field

The mean solar magnetic field as measured in integrated light has been observed since 1968. Since 1970 it has been observed both at Hale Observatories and at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. The observing procedures at both observatories and their implications for mean field measurements are discussed. A comparison of the two sets of daily observations shows that similar results are obtained at both observatories. A comparison of the mean field with the interplanetary magnetic polarity shows that the IMF sector structure has the same pattern as the mean field polarity.

Survey and Chase: A New Method of Observations For The Michigan Orbital Debris Survey Telescope (MODEST)

For more than 40 years astronauts have been observing Earth, taking photographs or digital images from their spacecraft. Today, a robust program of observation from the International Space Station (ISS) has yielded hundreds of thousands of images of the Earth s surface collected since 2001. Seeing Earth through the eyes of an astronaut is exciting to the general public, and the images are popular in classrooms. Because the ISS has an orbital inclination of 51.6 degrees (the north-south limits of the orbit are at 51.6 degrees latitude), high latitude observations are common. Some of the most striking images collected include views of polar phenomena. Astronauts routinely pass above brilliant red and green aurora; view high, wispy clouds at the top of the atmosphere; or look down on glaciers and floating ice rafts. These images, framed and captured by humans, are easily interpreted by students and teachers. Astronaut observations provide a way to visualize complicated polar phenomena and communicate about them to students of all ages. Over the next two years, astronauts aboard the ISS will formally focus their observations on polar phenomena as participants in the International Polar Year (IPY). Imagery acquisition from the ISS will be coordinated with other IPY scientists staging studies and field campaigns on the ground. The imagery collected from the ISS will be cataloged and served on NASA s web-based database of images, http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov . The website allows investigators, students and teachers to search through the imagery, assemble image datasets, and download the imagery and the metadata. We display some of the most spectacular examples of polar imagery and demonstrate NASA s database of astronaut images of Earth.

Earth rotation information derived from MERIT and POLARIS VLBI observations

Advanced methods involving observations of extraterrestrial objects, such as artificial satellites or quasars, may make it possible to monitor geometrical variations in survey networks of regional, continental, and global scale with a spatial resolution of a few centimeters and a temporal resolution of better than one day. However, in connection with a realization of this potential, it is necessary to account for variations in the orientation of the earth in space. The accuracy provided by the conventional approaches for determining the orientation of the earth is not sufficient in this case. However, an appropriate method could be based on the utilization of independent clock radio interferometry (commonly referred to as VLBI) observations of extragalactic radio sources. The project POLARIS (Polar-motion Analysis by Radio Interferometric Sampling) is concerned with an implementation of this method. The MERIT (Monitor Earth Rotation and Intercompare the Techniques of observation and analysis) observations represent an aid to project POLARIS. Attention is given to details regarding these programs and the results obtained thus far.

Basic research for the geodynamics program

Laser systems deployed in satellite tracking were upgraded to accuracy levels where biases from systematic unmodelled effects constitute the basic factor that prohibits extraction of the full amount of information contained in the observations. Taking into consideration that the quality of the instrument advances at a faster pace compared to the understanding and modeling of the physical processes involved, one can foresee that in the near future when all lasers are replaced with third generation ones the limiting factor for the estimated accuracies will be the aforementioned biases. Therefore, for the reduction of the observations, methods should be deployed in such a way that the effect of the biases will be kept well below the noise level. Such a method was proposed and studied. This method consists of using the observed part of the satellite pass and converting the laser ranges into range differences in hopes that they will be less affected by biases in the orbital models, the reference system, and the observations themselves.

The role of high energy photons and particles in accretion flows in active nuclei

The creation of high energy pairs and photons in the conversion of gravitational to thermal energy is a process common to most accretion models for active galactic nuclei. These are two observational methods designed to explore this process: direct observations of the hot photons, through hard X-ray and gamma-ray data, and indirect observations of the energetic pairs, through their polarized, nonthermal low frequency radiation. However, interpretation of these observations in terms of the conditions in the inner accretion flow requires understanding of the various processes which modify the pair and photon distributions within the hot, dense core. These processes include opacity effects within the pair/photon plasma, Compton losses on external photons, further acceleration of the pairs and further radiation by the pairs, and the dynamic interaction of the pair/photon plasma with the surrounding gas. Current observational and theoretical work is reviewed and new directions are considered in a search for constraints on or tests of accretion models of active nuclei.

Solar seeing and the spatial properties of the five-minute oscillations.

Numerical simulation of observations of the spatial properties of the five-minute oscillations, assuming that the oscillations are internal gravity waves excited by granular convection according to the theory of Thomas et al. (1971). The simulation includes the effects of seeing and finite aperture. The details of the simulation are chosen to model the observational method of Frazier (1968). The results show that the peak in the observed power spectrum of the oscillations can occur at a wavelength considerably longer than the true wavelength of the oscillations. In particular, the peak in Frazier's observed power spectra at wavelength of about 5000 km is consistent with the considerably shorter true wavelength of about 1500 km predicted by the gravity-wave theory.

Astrometry

Progress in astrometry is reviewed. Aspects of photographic astrometry are addressed, including the use and optimization of emulsions as detectors and the application of side-field and long-focus photographic astrometry to the determination of stellar positions, to proper motion surveys, the determination of more accurate parallaxes, the study of binaries, and the examination of the membership and internal motions of star clusters. The advantages and disadvantages of photoelectric astrometry are summarized, and the instruments used in this field is discussed, including scanners, detector arrays, stellar interferometers, space telescopes, and satellites. Promising observational methods for studying binary stars are addressed. Astrometry derived from meridian circle observations is considered, emphasizing the FK4 system. The use of radio astrometry is briefly discussed.

Probable detection of climatically significant change of the solar constant

It is suggested that the decrease in the solar radius inferred from solar eclipse observations made from 1715 to 1979 reflects a variation of the solar constant that may be of considerable climatic significance. A general, time-averaged relationship between changes in the solar constant and changes in the solar radius is derived based on a model of the contraction and expansion of the convective zone. A preliminary numerical calculation of radius changes due to changes in the mixing length of the solar envelope is presented which indicates that a decrease in solar radius of 0.5 arcsec, as observed in the last 264 years, would correspond to a decrease of 0.7% in the solar constant, a value of large climatic significance. Limitations of the observational method and the numerical approach are pointed out, and required additional theoretical and observational efforts are indicated.

A new method for astrometric observations of asteroids

In this paper we propose a new method for photographic astrometric observations of asteroids. We discuss its advantages and disadvantages and compare them to the advantages and disadvantages of the classical photographic methods. The new method is best suited for observations on a spot where no CCD cameras, blink or stereo comparators are available and when a fast detection of unknown objects is required.

Automation of surface observations program

At present, surface weather observing methods are still largely manual and labor intensive. Through the nationwide implementation of Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS), this situation can be improved. Two ASOS capability levels are planned. The first is a basic-level system which will automatically observe the weather parameters essential for aviation operations and will operate either with or without supplemental contributions by an observer. The second is a more fully automated, stand-alone system which will observe and report the full range of weather parameters and will operate primarily in the unattended mode. Approximately 250 systems are planned by the end of the decade. When deployed, these systems will generate the standard hourly and special long-line transmitted weather observations, as well as provide continuous weather information direct to airport users. Specific ASOS configurations will vary depending upon whether the operation is unattended, minimally attended, or fully attended. The major functions of ASOS are data collection, data processing, product distribution, and system control. The program phases of development, demonstration, production system acquisition, and operational implementation are described.

Classification image weights and internal noise level estimation

For the linear discrimination of two stimuli in white Gaussian noise in the presence of internal noise, a method is described for estimating linear classification weights from the sum of noise images segregated by stimulus and response. The recommended method for combining the two response images for the same stimulus is to difference the average images. Weights are derived for combining images over stimuli and observers. Methods for estimating the level of internal noise are described with emphasis on the case of repeated presentations of the same noise sample. Simple tests for particular hypotheses about the weights are shown based on observer agreement with a noiseless version of the hypothesis.

Instrument failure detection and isolation in a system with variable plant parameters

This paper considers the problem of detecting instrument failures in a system in which there are plant parameter variations. The method described is based on the use of Kalman filters to provide a detection comparison in a manner similar to Clark's dedicated observer method. To improve the sensitivity to sensor variation and reduce the sensitivity to plant parameter variation the Kalman filters are designed to be sub-optimal. A procedure is described to design the sub-optimal filters so as to improve a measure of the ratio of sensor to plant sensitivity.

Large-scale structure after COBE: Peculiar velocities and correlations of cold dark matter halos

Large N-body simulations on parallel supercomputers allow one to simultaneously investigate large-scale structure and the formation of galactic halos with unprecedented resolution. Our study shows that the masses as well as the spatial distribution of halos on scales of tens of megaparsecs in a cold dark matter (CDM) universe with the spectrum normalized to the anisotropies detected by Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) is compatible with the observations. We also show that the average value of the relative pairwise velocity dispersion sigma(sub v) - used as a principal argument against COBE-normalized CDM models-is significantly lower for halos than for individual particles. When the observational methods of extracting sigma(sub v) are applied to the redshift catalogs obtained from the numerical experiments, estimates differ significantly between different observation-sized samples and overlap observational estimates obtained following the same procedure.
