Lowering the Activation Barriers for Lithium-Ion Conductivity through Orientational Disorder in the Cyanide Argyrodite Li6PS5CN

Rapid advancements in safe and high-energy-density energy storage are predicated on identifying new solid-state ion conductors with low activation energies and high ionic conductivities for all-solid-state battery technologies. Halide argyrodites are among some of the top candidates for solid-state electrolytes, as they can achieve ionic conductivities that approach liquid electrolytes. Incorporating dynamic pseudohalide species in argyrodite solid electrolytes presents an exciting opportunity to exploit lattice dynamics as a design principle to modulate the ion conduction properties of solid-state ion conductors. In the present study, we have prepared the new argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 CN containing orientationally disordered cyanide ions. The new cyanide argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 CN exhibits an activation barrier to Li-ion transport of 471 ± 25 meV and a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 6(2) × 10 –5 S cm –1 in comparison to the activation barrier of 502 ± 16 meV and an ionic conductivity of 2.3(1) × 10 –4 S cm –1 measured for the bromide analogue Li 6 PS 5 Br. Structural studies of both compounds by high-resolution X-ray diffraction indicate that Li 6 PS 5 CN and Li 6 PS 5 Br adopt nearly identical crystal structures with similar lattice parameters, which indicates that lower activation barriers in Li 6 PS 5 CN arise due to the cyanide ion itself rather than due to changes in the geometry of conduction pathways in the local lithium environment. The orientational disorder of the quadrupolar cyanide ion in Li 6 PS 5 CN points to a complex interplay of lattice polarizability and molecular dynamics that lower the activation barrier for lithium-ion conductivity in the cyanide argyrodite.

Orientational Pair Correlations in a Dipolar Molecular Liquid: Time-Resolved Resonant and Nonresonant Pump–Probe Spectroscopies

Orientational pair correlations (OPCs), when they are sufficiently strong in a liquid, contain information on the interplay between structure and dynamics that arise from intermolecular interactions. Consequently, the quantification of OPCs remains a subject of substantial interest in current experimental and theoretical work. In the case of benzonitrile, the importance of OPCs remains ambiguous owing to the use of model-dependent analyses or reliance on a single spectroscopic technique. In this work, IR polarization selective pump-probe (PSPP) and optical heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect (OHD-OKE) experiments were used to quantify OPCs in benzonitrile. These methods measure single molecule and collective relaxation, respectively. Comparison of the orientational correlation function (PSPP) of the naturally abundant 13CN stretching mode and the polarizability anisotropy relaxation (OHD-OKE) of the liquid revealed that collective reorientation was a factor of 1.56 ± 0.08 slower than the single molecule reorientation time. The two types of measurements on dilute benzonitrile in carbon tetrachloride were the same within experimental error. These results support the proposition that OPCs exist and arise from the formation of parallel-aligned intermolecular structures in the neat liquid.

Enhanced piezoelectricity from highly polarizable oriented amorphous fractions in biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) with pure β crystals

Piezoelectric polymers hold great potential for various electromechanical applications, but only show low performance, with |d 33 |< 30 pC/N. We prepare a highly piezoelectric polymer (d 33 = -62 pC/N) based on a biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) (BOPVDF, crystallinity = 0.52). After unidirectional poling, macroscopically aligned samples with pure β crystals are achieved, which show a high spontaneous polarization (P s ) of 140 mC/m 2 . Given the theoretical limit of P s,β = 188 mC/m 2 for the neat β crystal, the high P s cannot be explained by the crystalline-amorphous two-phase model (i.e., P s,β = 270 mC/m 2 ). Instead, we deduce that a significant amount (at least 0.25) of an oriented amorphous fraction (OAF) must be present between these two phases. Experimental data suggest that the mobile OAF resulted in the negative and high d 33 for the poled BOPVDF. The plausibility of this conclusion is supported by molecular dynamics simulations.

Giant spontaneous polarization for enhanced ferroelectric properties of biaxially oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) by mobile oriented amorphous fractions

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its random copolymers exhibit the most distinctive ferroelectric properties; however, their spontaneous polarization (60–105 mC m -2 ) is still inferior to those (>200 mC m -2 ) of the ceramic counterparts. In this work, we report an unprecedented spontaneous polarization ( P s = 140 mC m -2 ) for a highly poled biaxially oriented PVDF (BOPVDF) film, which contains a pure β crystalline phase. Given the crystallinity of ~0.52, the P s for the β phase ( P s,β ) is calculated to be 279 mC m -2 , if a simple two-phase model of semicrystalline polymers is assumed. This high P s,β is invalid, because the theoretical limit of P s,β is 185 mC m -2 , as calculated by density functional theory. To explain such a high P s for the poled BOPVDF, a third component in the amorphous phase must participate in the ferroelectric switching to contribute to the P s . Namely, an oriented amorphous fraction (OAF) links the lamellar crystal and the mobile amorphous fraction. From the hysteresis loop study, the OAF content was determined to be ~0.28, more than 50% of the amorphous phase. Because of the high polarizability of the OAFs, the dielectric constant of the poled BOPVDF reached nearly twice the value of conventional PVDF. Overall, the fundamental knowledge obtained from this study will provide a solid foundation for the future development of PVDF-based high performance electroactive polymers for wearable electronics and soft robotic applications.

A Novel Resilience-Oriented Cellular Grid Formation Approach for Distribution Systems with Behind-the-Meter Distributed Energy Resources

This paper presents a resilience-oriented cellular grid formation approach to achieve scalable and reconfigurable community microgrid operations for distribution systems with behind-the-meter distributed energy resources. A set of interconnected solar photovoltaics, energy storage systems, and load is termed as a cell, implying a subset of the grid that can operate independently using its own resources. Cells are identified such that each cell inherently has sufficient energy resources to black start and can provide a certain level of backup power for its load under the loss of utility power supply. The proposed cell formation approach builds on a unique self-organizing map-based method (SomRes) to quantify a system's resilience. Using SomRes and a non-dominated sorting-based genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), a fast and efficient cell formation algorithm is developed to identify cells in a distribution system that are resilient against extreme events. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a numerical model of a real distribution feeder in Colorado, United States.

Small-Signal Angle Stability-Oriented False Data Injection Cyber-Attacks on Power Systems

The small-signal angle stability (SSAS) of a power system is determined by the property of operation points. The widely applied false data injection (FDI) cyber-attack, however, is able to stealthily mislead the optimal power flow (OPF) and thus compromise operation points, leading to damages to the SSAS margin. Here, to provide insights for cyber defenders, this paper proposes and investigates a stealthy SSAS-oriented FDI cyber-attack focusing on two attacking purposes, i.e., the SSAS margin and operation cost, with higher priority on the former one. First, this paper establishes a novel bi-level model with an implicit SSAS constraint based on a structure preserving model to compromise operation points. Then, for the SSAS interarea mode in a typical two-area system, this paper formulates closed-form expressions of how the SSAS margin and operation cost behave with respect to stealthy injections. By comparison, for the SSAS local mode in general power systems, this paper proposes a moving target cyber-attack-based hierarchical solution algorithm. Simulation results on a two-area system, a Kundur 11 bus system, and a modified IEEE 14 bus system demonstrate the significant damaging effects of the proposed SSAS-oriented FDI cyber-attack and the conflict between the two attacking purposes.

Microlite orientation in obsidian flow measured by synchrotron X-ray diffraction

Clinopyroxene and plagioclase (andesine) microlites in an obsidian flow from Glass Mountain (NE California, USA) display strong alignment. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, coupled with Rietveld analysis, was used to quantify crystallographic-preferred orientation (CPO). Clinopyroxene, with a rod-shaped morphology, shows a strong alignment of [001] in the flow direction and (010) aligned parallel to the inferred flow plane. Andesine, with a platy morphology, displays an alignment of (010) platelets in the flow plane. Some pole densities exceed 90 multiples of random distribution. Applying a model of rigid ellipsoidal inclusions in a viscous matrix, the local pure shear strains are between 2 and 3.

Metastable orientation relationships in thin film Cu-Cr bilayers

Metastable orientation relationships (ORs) between Cu and Cr were kinetically stabilized via epitaxial thin film deposition on MgO(001). Both Cu(001) and Cr(001) grow epitaxially on MgO(001). The Bain OR was observed by x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy for Cr(001) / Cu(001) / MgO(001). In contrast, three Cr/Cu ORs were found for Cr deposition on Cu(001) / MgO(001): the Pitsch OR, and two previously unreported ORs related to the Bain and Pitsch ORs, respectively. Ab initio calculations predict the energetics of these ORs, and reveal that the deformation resistance of Cr leads to the three observed ORs on Cu(001).

Anisotropic Motions of Fibrils Dictated by Their Orientations in the Lamella: A Coarse-Grained Model of a Plant Cell Wall

Plant cell walls are complex systems that exhibit the characteristics of both rigid and soft material depending on their external perturbations. The three main polymeric components in a plant primary cell wall are cellulose fibrils, hemicellulose, and pectins. These components interact in a hierarchical fashion giving rise to mesoscale structural features such as cellulose bundles, lamella stacking, and so on. Although several studies have focused on understanding these unique structural features, a clear picture linking them to cell wall mechanics is still lacking. As a first step toward this goal, a phenomenological model of plant cell wall has been developed in this work by using available experimental data to investigate the underlying connections between mesoscale structural features and the motions of fibrils during deformation. In this model cellulose fibrils exhibit motions such as angular reorientations and kinking upon forced stretching. Furthermore, these motions are dependent on the orientation of fibrils with respect to the stretch direction, i.e., fibrils that are at an angle to the stretch direction exhibit predominant angular reorientations, while fibrils transverse to the stretch direction undergo kinking as a result of transverse compression. Varying the chain length of pectin had negligible effects on these motions. One of the main contributions from this work is the development of a simple model that can be easily fine-tuned to test other hypotheses and extended to include additional experimental knowledge about the structural aspects of cell walls in the future.

Orientational Dependence of Cofacial Porphyrin–Quinone Electronic Interactions within the Strong Coupling Regime

We examine the relative magnitudes of electronic coupling HDA in two face-to-face rigid and diastereomeric (porphinato)zinc(II)–quinone (PZn–Q) as-semblies, 1β-ZnA and 1β-ZnB, in which the six quinonyl carbon atoms lie in virtually identical arrangements relative to the PZn plane at sub-van der Waals donor–acceptor (D–A) interplanar separations. Steady-state and time-resolved transient optical data and computational studies show that minor differences in relative D–A cofacial orientation give rise to disparate H DA magnitudes for both photoinduced charge separation (CS) and thermal charge recombination (CR). Here, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computations illuminate the nature of direct charge transfer states and the electronic structural factors that give rise to these differential H DA s. These data show more extensive mixing of locally excited (LE) and CS states in 1β-ZnA relative to 1β-ZnB and that these H DA differences track the magnitudes of electronic coupling matrix elements determined from steady-state electronic spectral data and thermal CR rate constants measured via pump–probe spectroscopy. Collectively, this work shows that electron transfer dynamics may be manipulated in cofacial D–A systems, even at sub-van der Waals contact, provided that conformational rigidity precludes structural fluctuations that modulate D–A interactions on the charge transfer time scale.

A Closed Bay-Breeze Circulation and Its Lifecycle From TRACER With a New Orienteering Tape Recorder Diagram

A closed bay-breeze circulation (BBC) followed by a gulf-breeze front (GBF) was observed on 10 September 2022 during the Department of Energy's (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) TRACER campaign. Using high-resolution X-band Scanning Cloud Radar (XSACR) and a newly developed orienteering tape recorder diagram, the study analyzed radar reflectivity and Doppler velocity to identify anomalies and track the evolution of these circulations. The BBC, a mesoscale system approximately 30-km long, 30-km wide, and 2-km deep, formed from enhanced horizontal convective rolls along the Galveston Bay coast, progressing northwestward under a 6 m s−1 onshore flow anomaly and reaching 1.5 km depth with return flow aloft. The inland penetration speed was 2 m s−1, driven by an observed 6-9 K land-water temperature contrast. The GBF, coupled to the BBC, intensified with additional southerly flow, penetrating further inland after the BBC collapsed. Passing over the TRACER field site, both fronts significantly impacted boundary layer thermodynamics, dynamics, and aerosol concentration. The BBC event exhibited four lifecycle stages-formation, development, maturation, and dissipation-driven by solar heating, wind field rotation, and interactions with convective eddies and the GBF. This study provides insights into the inland evolution of coastal breeze circulations and their interactions with environmental processes.
