Observation of Pulsed Gamma Rays with Energies Greater than 250 keV from the Crab Nebula Pulsar NP 0532

Data from a balloon flight experiment using an Na I scintillation spectrometer were analyzed for gamma ray pulsation. The payload was carried to a nominal atmospheric depth of 3.5 g/cm2. A superposed epoch analysis was performed on a 12,000 second portion of the data spanning a total time interval of 16,700 seconds at float altitude. A positive pulsed contribution was observed at the expected apparent frequency of NP 0532 having the typical double pulse structure. The results indicate a time-averaged pulse photon flux of 0.00144 + or - 0.00057 photons/sq cm/sec in the energy interval from 250 keV to 2.3 MeV. This represents a time-averaged pulsed power of 0.000649 + or - 0.000257 keV/sq cm/sec/keV. The ratio of interpulse to main pulse was found to be 2.4 + or - 1.9. The analysis indicates a positive photon flux from 250 keV to 725 keV of 0.00120 + or - 0.00052 photons/sq cm/sec.

New observations of pulsed X-ray emission from NP 0532

Large-area proportional counters sensitive from 0.6 to 23 keV were used to observe about 3 min of pulsed X-ray emission from NP 0532 during two lunar-occultation experiments. A detailed pulse profile with 65-microsec resolution shows that the X-ray primary-pulse shape is essentially identical to its optical counterpart. Spectral data on the pulsed X-ray emission are presented. A pulse-by-pulse examination of the data shows no evidence for temporal variability.

Transient structure in the high-energy X-ray light curve of NP 0532

The paper reports the observation of pulsed fractions in the primary and secondary peaks, as well as in the interpulse region, of the high-energy X-ray light curve of NP 0532. A statistical analysis of light-curve data is performed, and a similar analysis is carried out using simulated data. It is concluded that a previously reported third peak in the light curve was transient in nature.

The potential of np GaAs solar cells for high efficiency concentrator applications

This communication considers the design of the front grid contact of np GaAs solar cells for high efficiency concentrator applications. This design involves shadowing, contact resistance, and active layer sheet resistance losses, and at high concentrations, the power loss due to voltage drop on the resistance of the grid fingers should be considered. Analysis of the performance can be calculated as a function of junction depth and surface recombination velocity. The junction depth can be optimized by considering its effect on the collection efficiency of the dark current-voltage characteristics or the open circuit voltage, and on the series resistance loss or the fill factor for material parameters. The choice of the material parameters, calculation of the short circuit current, the selection of the n layer thickness, and the cell maximum power and efficiency are discussed. It is concluded that optimized multi-grid structures should allow the use of 10 by 10 sq cm cells with good efficiencies at high concentration ratios, and efficiencies of 22 to 25% should be obtainable from large area cells at concentrations of 40 AM1.

Recent results on the peformance of EFOS, NP and NX hydrogen masers

In response to a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Work Assignment, Bendix Field Engineering Corporation evaluated the performance of the Oscilloquartz EPOS-2 hydrogen maser along with that of NASA NX-3 and NP-2 hydrogen masers in early 1983. This paper presents the results of that evaluation.

Forbidden lines of np(q) ions. II - Line intensities

Ground state forbidden transitions of np(q) ions of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe can provide important information on the state of cosmic ionized gases. The line intensities of 95 transitions of these ions have been tabulated, including those used to calculate the line ratios as well as other strong lines of the ions in the ground state terms in the same temperature and density ranges treated previously. These data can be used for calculations of the absolute line intensities if the ionic abundances are known. These calculations are important for studies of the solar transition region, ionized nebulae, circumstellar nebulae such as found in symbiotic stars, supernova remnants, interstellar bubbles produced by stellar winds, and emission regions in active galactic nuclei.

Nested Quantum Search and NP-Complete Problem

A quantum algorithm is known that solves an unstructured search problem in a number of iterations of order square-root of d, where d is the dimension of the search space, whereas any classical algorithm scales as O(d).

Measurement of the circular polarization of pulsar NP 0532.

The polarizer is briefly described. The polarization of the whole pulse is not significantly different from zero (-0.15 plus or minus 0.70 per cent). Polarization measurements of the leading edge and trailing edge of the main pulse are also given.

1s2 1S-1s np 1P transitions of the helium isoelectronic sequence members up to z = 30

The radial integrals required to calculate oscillator strengths for the helium sequence ions have been obtained using a one-electron hydrogenic model. The present approach retains two different values of the effective charge parameter, one for the initial state, and one for the final state. The model is shown to be capable of reasonably reproducing the existing dipole oscillator strength values with minimal computational effort. Dipole oscillator strengths for certain ions are presented for the first time.
