Calculation of Flow Fields from Bow-Wave Profiles for the Downstream Region of Blunt-Nosed Circular Cylinders in Axial Hypersonic Flight

A method by which known bow-wave profiles may be analyzed to give the flow fields around blunt-nosed cylinders in axial hypersonic flow is presented. In the method, the assumption is made that the pressure distribution curve in a transverse plane is similar to that given by blast- wave theory. Numerical analysis based on the one-dimensional energy and continuity equations then leads to distributions of all the flow variables in the cross section, for either a perfect gas or a real gas. The entire flow field need not be solved. Attention can be confined to any desired station. The critical question is the validity of the above assumption. It is tested for the case of a hemisphere cylinder in flight at 20,000 ft/sec. The flow is analyzed for three stations along the cylindrical afterbody, and found to compare very closely with the results of an exact (inviscid) solution. The assumed form of the pressure distribution occurs at stations as close as 1.2 diameters to the body nose. However, it is suggested that the assumption may not apply this far forward in general, particularly when bodies of nonsmooth contour are considered.

Numerical Simulation of Roughness-Induced Transient Growth in a Laminar Boundary Layer

Numerical simulations are used to examine the roughness-induced transient growth in a laminar boundary-layer flow. Based on the spectral element method, these simulations model the stationary disturbance field associated with a nonsmooth roughness geometry, such as the spanwise periodic array of circular disks used by White and co-workers during a series of wind tunnel experiments at Case Western Reserve University. Besides capturing the major trends from the recent measurements by White and Ergin, the simulations provide additional information concerning the relative accuracy of the experimental findings derived from two separate wall-finding procedures. The paper also explores the dependence of transient growth on geometric characteristics of the roughness distribution, including the height and planform shape of the roughness element and the ratio of roughness due to spacing between an adjacent pair of elements. Results are used for a preliminary assessment of the differences between recently reported theoretical results of Tumin and Reshotko and the measurements by White and Ergin.

Airfoil Design and Optimization by the One-Shot Method

An efficient numerical approach for the design of optimal aerodynamic shapes is presented in this paper. The objective of any optimization problem is to find the optimum of a cost function subject to a certain state equation (governing equation of the flow field) and certain side constraints. As in classical optimal control methods, the present approach introduces a costate variable (Lagrange multiplier) to evaluate the gradient of the cost function. High efficiency in reaching the optimum solution is achieved by using a multigrid technique and updating the shape in a hierarchical manner such that smooth (low-frequency) changes are done separately from high-frequency changes. Thus, the design variables are changed on a grid where their changes produce nonsmooth (high-frequency) perturbations that can be damped efficiently by the multigrid. The cost of solving the optimization problem is approximately two to three times the cost of the equivalent analysis problem.

On the Calculation of Exact Cumulative Distribution Statistics for Burgers Equation

A mathematical procedure is presented for the calculation of exact cumulative distribution statistics for a viscosity-free variant of Burgers nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) in one space dimension and time subject to sinusoidal initial data with uncertain (random variable) amplitude or phase shift. Analytical solutions of nonlinear PDEs with uncertain initial and/or boundary data are invaluable benchmarks in assessing approximate uncertainty quantification techniques. The Burgers equation solution with uncertain initial data results in nonsmooth solution behavior in both physical and random variable dimensions which provides a severe test for approximate uncertainty quantification techniques. Mathematical proofs are provided to verify that exact cumulative distribution statistics can be systematically and robustly obtained for all forward time.
