Fabrication and Characterization of Thin Film Ion Implanted Composite Materials for Integrated Nonlinear Optical Devices

Ion implantation has been shown to produce a high density of metal colloids within the layer regions of glasses and crystalline materials. The high-precipitate volume fraction and small size of metal nanoclusters formed leads to values for the third-order susceptibility much greater than those for metal doped solids. This has stimulated interest in use of ion implantation to make nonlinear optical materials. On the other side, LiNbO3 has proved to be a good material for optical waveguides produced by MeV ion implantation. Light confinement in these waveguides is produced by refractive index step difference between the implanted region and the bulk material. Implantation of LiNbO3 with MeV metal ions can therefore result into nonlinear optical waveguide structures with great potential in a variety of device applications. We describe linear and nonlinear optical properties of a waveguide structure in LiNbO3-based composite material produced by silver ion implantation in connection with mechanisms of its formation.

Solution Growth of a Novel Nonlinear Optical Material: L-Histidine Tetrafluoroborate

Single crystals of L-Histidine tetrafluoroborate (L-HFB), a semiorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) material have been successfully grown by the temperature lowering and evaporation methods in our laboratory. Solubility curves of L-HFB have been determined in different solvents, such as water, ethanol and acetone. The solubility of L-HFB is very low in acetone, and ethanol, therefore, it is not feasible to grow L-HFB single crystals using these solvents. Good quality single crystals of a novel nonlinear optical material L-HFB have been grown from aqueous solution. Effects of seed orientation on morphologies of L-HFB crystals were studied. The advantages and disadvantage of both the evaporation and the temperature lowering techniques are compared. The single crystals in size 20 x 20 x 10 cubic mm were grown with deionized water as solvent in two weeks with an approximate growth rate of 1.4mm/day. The transmission range for these crystals has been found to be from 250 nm to 1500 nm.

Growth of thin films of organic nonlinear optical materials by vapor growth processes - An overview and examination of shortfalls

Research on the growth of second- and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) organic thin film by vapor deposition is reviewed. Particular attention is given to the experimental methods for growing thin films of p-chlorophenylurea, diacetylenes, and phthalocyanines; characteristics of the resulting films; and approaches for advancing thin film technology. It is concluded that the growth of NLO thin films by vapor processes is a promising method for the fabrication of planar waveguides for nonlinear optical devices. Two innovative approaches are proposed including a method of controlling the input beam frequency to maximize nonlinear effects in thin films and single crystals, and the alternate approach to the molecular design of organic NLO materials by increasing the transition dipole moment between ground and excited states of the molecule.

Nonlinear optical effects on the surface of acridine yellow-doped lead-tin fluorophosphate glass

The second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties of acridine yellow-doped lead-tin fluorophosphate (LTF) glass have been directly studied by measurement of surface enhanced second harmonic generation and third harmonic generation. The three photon excitation fluorescence is also observed. Based on these results, the large nonlinearities of the acridine LTF system which is a new nonlinear optical material are experimentally demonstrated.

Diagrammatic analysis of the density operator for nonlinear optical calculations Pulsed and CW responses

In the present paper a diagrammatic analysis of the density operator for the evaluation of nonlinear optical quantities is considered. The present approach extends earlier diagrammatic analysis by treating the time evolution of both the wave function and its complex conjugate. Time-ordered graphs result, each of which corresponds to a term in the density matrix. Examples involving the third-order susceptibility are discussed for both monochromatic and pulse excitation. In particular coherent rotational transient birefringence is discussed. The diagrams provide a convenient means by which nonlinear optical processes can be precisely defined and the susceptibility readily evaluated.

Laser And Nonlinear Optical Materials For Laser Remote Sensing

NASA remote sensing missions involving laser systems and their economic impact are outlined. Potential remote sensing missions include: green house gasses, tropospheric winds, ozone, water vapor, and ice cap thickness. Systems to perform these measurements use lanthanide series lasers and nonlinear devices including second harmonic generators and parametric oscillators. Demands these missions place on the laser and nonlinear optical materials are discussed from a materials point of view. Methods of designing new laser and nonlinear optical materials to meet these demands are presented.

Crystal growth of organics for nonlinear optical applications

The crystal growth and characterization of organic and inorganic nonlinear optical materials were extensively studied. For example, inorganic crystals such as thallium arsenic selenide were studied in our laboratory for several years and crystals in sizes over 2.5 cm in diameter are available. Organic crystals are suitable for the ultraviolet and near infrared region, but are relatively less developed than their inorganic counterparts. Very high values of the second harmonic conversion efficiency and the electro-optic coefficient were reported for organic compounds. Single crystals of a binary organic alloy based on m.NA and CNA were grown and higher second harmonic conversion efficiency than the values reported for m.NA were observed.

Growth of Bulk Single Crystals of Dicyanovinyl-Ansiole and its Derivatives for Nonlinear Optical Applications

Bulk single crystals of a series of thermally stable nonlinear optical organic materials, Dicyanovinyl-anisole (DIVA) and their methoxy derivatives, have been successfully grown using the Bridgman-Stockbarger technique. The growth conditions are chosen to be temperature gradient of 5 to 10 C/cm and lowering rate of 0.1 to 0.3 mm/h. Single crystals of DIVA and its derivatives, of 8 x 8 x 50 cu mm in size, have been grown while maintaining a flat solid-liquid growth interface.

Squeezing spectra for nonlinear optical systems

The squeezing spectra for the output fields of several intracavity nonlinear optical systems are obtained. It is shown that at critical points, e.g., the turning points for optical bistability, the threshold for parametric oscillation, and the self-pulsing instability in second-harmonic generation, perfect squeezing in the output field is, in principle, possible.

Second and third order nonlinear optical properties of conjugated molecules and polymers

Second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties of some newly synthesized organic molecules and polymers are reported. Powder second-harmonic-generation efficiencies of up to 200 times urea have been realized for asymmetric donor-acceptor acetylenes. Third harmonic generation chi(3)s have been determined for a series of small conjugated molecules in solution. THG chi(3)s have also been determined for a series of soluble conjugated copolymers prepared using ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The results are discussed in terms of relevant molecular and/or macroscopic structural features of these conjugated organic materials.

Molecular Modeling and Experimental Study of Nonlinear Optical Compounds: Mono-Substituted Derivatives of Dicyanovinylbenzene

A search for potential nonlinear optical (NLO) compounds has been performed using the Cambridge Structural Database and molecular modeling. We have studied a series of mono-substituted derivatives of dicyanovinylbenzene as the NLO properties of one of its derivatives (o-methoxy-dicyanovinylbenzene, DIVA) were described earlier. The molecular geometry in the series of the compounds studied was investigated with an X- ray analysis and discussed along with results of molecular mechanics and ab initio quantum chemical calculations. The influence of crystal packing on the molecular planarity has been revealed. Two new compounds from the series studied were found to be active for second harmonic generation (SHG) in the powder. The measurements of SHG efficiency have shown that the o-F- and p-Cl-derivatives of dicyanovinylbenzene are about 10 and 20- times more active than urea, respectively. The peculiarities of crystal structure formation in the framework of balance between the van der Waals and electrostatic interactions have been discussed. The crystal morphology of DIVA and two new SHG-active compounds have been calculated on the basis of their known crystal structures.

Thermally Stable Heterocyclic Imines as New Potential Nonlinear Optical Materials

In the course of a search for new thermostable acentric nonlinear optical crystalline materials, several heterocyclic imine derivatives were designed, with the general structure D-pi-A(D'). Introduction of a donor amino group (D') into the acceptor moiety was expected to bring H-bonds into their crystal structures, and so to elevate their melting points and assist in an acentric molecular packing. Six heterocycle-containing compounds of this type were prepared, single crystals were grown for five of them, and these crystals were characterized by X-ray analysis. A significant melting temperature elevation was found for all of the synthesized compounds. Three of the compounds were also found to crystallize in acentric space groups. One of the acentric compounds is built as a three-dimensional H-bonded molecular network. In the other two compounds, with very similar molecular structure, the molecules form one-dimensional H-bonded head-to-head associates (chains). These chains are parallel in two different crystallographic directions and form very unusual interpenetrating chain patterns in an acentric crystal. Two of the compounds crystallized with centrosymmetric molecular packing.

Absolute and relative nonlinear optical coefficients of KDP, KD(asterisk)P, BaB2O4, LiIO3, MgO:LiNbO3, and KTP measured by phase-matched second-harmonic generation

Both absolute and relative nonlinear optical coefficients of six nonlinear materials measured by second-harmonic generation are discussed. A single-mode, injection-seeded, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with spatially filtered output was used to generate the 1.064-micron fundamental radiation. The following results were obtained: d36(KDP) = 0.38 pm/V, d36(KD/asterisk/P) = 0.37 pm/V, (parallel)d22(BaB2O4)(parallel) = 2.2 pm/V, d31(LiIO3) = -4.1 pm/V, d31(5 percentMgO:MgO LiNbO3) = -4.7 pm/V, and d(eff)(KTP) = 3.2 pm/V. The accuracy of these measurements is estimated to be better than 10 percent.

Nonlinear optical processing with Fabry-Perot interferometers containing phase recording media

New techniques in nonlinear optical processing are explored, based on the operation of intensity level selection as performed by a Fabry-Perot interferometer containing a phase object. The image being processed is recorded on a medium between the mirrors as a spatially varying phase shift less than pi. The interferometer only transmits light through those portions of the object that corresponds to a single value of the phase and hence to a single intensity level in the input. More complicated operations such as thresholding and analog-to-digital conversion are performed by modulating the light source as the different levels are selected. Photoresist and lithium niobate have been used as phase objects, and experimental data for both are presented. Three kinds of Fabry-Perot interferometers have been used to demonstrate nonlinear processing using coherent and incoherent light. Color images have been produced with black and white inputs and white light illumination.

Melt Growth of a Nonlinear Optical Crystal Triethylphosphine Sulfide using Modified Bridgman-Stockbarger Technique

Bulk single crystals of triethylphosphine sulfide (C2H5)3P(S), a potential nonlinear optical organic material has been grown from melt using Bridgman- Stockbarger method. Commercially available material triethylphosphine sulfide procured from Johnson Matthey was purified by physical vapor transport using low pressure sublimaton (about 30 mTorr). Modified Bridgman-Stockbarger technique is characterized by the smallest possible quantity of product in the melt for a short period of time. The temperature gradient was chosen to be about 10 C/cm and the ampoule was lowering rate was chosen to be 0.2-0.3 mm/h. For various growth conditions, several single crystal of triethylphosphine sulfide have been grown with sizes 10X10X15mm(exp 3). The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency was measured and has been found to be comparable to phase matched potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals. Further characterization of the grown single crystals is in progress and the results will be presented at the symposium.

Nonlinear Optical Image Processing with Bacteriorhodopsin Films

The transmission properties of some bacteriorhodopsin film spatial light modulators are uniquely suited to allow nonlinear optical image processing operations to be applied to images with multiplicative noise characteristics. A logarithmic amplitude transmission feature of the film permits the conversion of multiplicative noise to additive noise, which may then be linearly filtered out in the Fourier plane of the transformed image. The bacteriorhodopsin film displays the logarithmic amplitude response for write beam intensities spanning a dynamic range greater than 2.0 orders of magnitude. We present experimental results demonstrating the principle and capability for several different image and noise situations, including deterministic noise and speckle. Using the bacteriorhodopsin film, we successfully filter out image noise from the transformed image that cannot be removed from the original image.
