Templates of expected measurement uncertainties for average prompt and total fission neutron multiplicities

In this paper, we provide templates of measurement uncertainty sources expected to appear for average prompt- and total-fission neutron multiplicities, $ \overline\nu_p $ and $ \overline\nu_t $, for the following measurement types: absolute manganese-bath experiments for $ \overline\nu_t $, absolute and ratio liquid-scintillator measurements for $ \overline\nu_p $. These templates also suggest a typical range of these uncertainties and their correlations based on a survey of available experimental data, associated literature, and feedback from experimentalists. In addition, the information needed to faithfully include the associated experimental data into the nuclear-data evaluation process is provided.

Characterization of Impure Plutonium Oxide Neutron Calibration Standards through Evaluation by Neutron Multiplicity Equations

Plutonium oxide calibration standards STD4C, STD6C and STD8C have been historically used, and are currently the only MT52 standards in use, for calibration and measurement control program of Passive/Active Neutron Coincidence Counter known as PAN1 at PF-4. In this paper, previously measured high-statistics data are used in conjunction with neutron multiplicity equations to determine multiplication M and α parameter of these standards as the explicit knowledge of these parameters may allow quantification of precision and bias of accountability measurements of different material types and matrices of items.

High Multiplication Neutron Noise Measurements Using the 7uPCX Assembly

The Seven Percent Critical Experiment, or 7uPCX, is a system that mimics the physics of light water nuclear reactor systems by using uranium dioxide fuel pins at an enrichment of approximately 7%. 7uPCX is often used for benchmarking and nuclear data purposes. As part of a collaboration between Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire, measurements were performed in support of a high-multiplication, subcritical benchmark candidate for a thermal system. The measurements were completed by making subcritical configurations using the fuel loading pattern of a well-documented configuration of the Seven Percent Critical Experiment at Sandia National Laboratories, which exists as a benchmark in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project handbook. These measurements, which aimed to capture multiplications ranging from approximately 10 to 1,000, also serve as an intercomparison between both the fielded detector systems and analysis methodologies with the goal of better characterizing the detectors and their ability to capture the state of the criticality these types of systems. Los Alamos National Laboratory’s measurements for this collaboration were made with five linked helium-3 based neutron multiplicity detectors placed on the periphery of the reactor tank beyond the infinite reflector thickness of water, and four organic scintillators placed in dry-wells in-reactor near the edge of the upper fuel grid plate. This work captures the Los Alamos National Laboratory measurements, the Rossi-α and Feynman-Y results, provides an intercomparison between the results of the 3 He neutron detectors and the organic scintillators, compares to simulation where possible, and expands on future work.

Update of the Cesium-136 Cumulative Fission Yields at Multiple Neutron Energies

Nuclear data is foundational to several fields, including nuclear forensics. Nuclear forensics investigations of fission events, relies heavily on the cumulative fission yields, however several highly useful fission products suffer from very poor nuclear data including cumulative fission yields or associated uncertainties in that value. Cesium-136 is a highly relevant example of this issue, where the cumulative fission yield may be accurate but its uncertainty high enough to preclude its usefulness. In this work we evaluate and calculate an updated cumulative fission yield for 136 Cs for 235 U, 238 U, and 239 Pu at multiple neutron energies or sources using data obtained from irradiation campaigns. In all cases these newly determined cumulative fission yields provided small changes to the actual fission yields but had dramatic improvements to the uncertainty in those yields. These improvements in uncertainty will enable nuclear forensics end users to use 136 Cs data with more confidence.

Prompt fission neutron multiplicity in the 239 Pu(n, f) reaction and its energy dependence

Measuring prompt fission neutrons to high precision is an experimental challenge, especially for radioactive fissioning nuclides. However, accurate average multiplicities, $\overline{v}_{p}$, and kinetic energy distributions of prompt fission neutrons are essential for fundamental and applied nuclear physics. We present here a recent measurement of the 239 Pu (n,f) $\overline{v}_{p}$ as a function of the incident-neutron energy, over the range 1-700 MeV. The measurement was performed with a cutting-edge setup and an innovative technique, which allowed to minimize and account for the main sources of bias. An unprecedented precision was therefore achieved. Our data are compared to GEF predictions as well as to evaluated libraries. For the first time, at low energies, the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data evaluation is validated with an independent measurement and the evaluated uncertainty reduced by up to 60%. This work paves the way to precisely measure prompt fission neutron multiplicities on highly radioactive nuclei.

Covariance generation for the prompt neutron multiplicity of 239 Pu including the (n, γ f) process

Fission cross section of 239 Pu can be seen as a sum of the “immediate" fission and “two-step" (n,γf) reactions. In the Resolved Resonance Range of the reaction cross sections, the contribution of the (n,γf) process has an impact on the determination of the partial widths magnitude involved in the Reich-Moore approximation of the R-matrix theory. The present work aims to investigate this impact by using the CONRAD code and the partial width Γ γf for the (n,γf) reaction calculated by Lynn et al. A special attention will be paid to the covariance matrix obtained on ν p .

239 Pu(n,f) Neutron Multiplicity Evaluation with CGMF-Very First Release Candidate [Slides]

239 Pu(n,f) nu-bar evaluated with CGMF from E inc = 0.1-20 MeV. Changes compared to VIII.0: Prior: CGMF model included via Kalman and sensitivities of CGMF model parameters to nu-bar. Evaluation technique: Kalman including correction for PPP. Experimental data: Nearly all data that Phil took into account (I rejected: Huanqiao, Johnstone, Leroy, Nesterov, Smirenkin); New UQ for all experimental data; Marini; No correlations between unc. of different exp., except for Cf-252(sf) nu-bar uncertainty cross-correlating all uncertainties.
